I think the underlying issue with the 1-10 scale is that some people feeling that they're a 5 is perfectly fine as it's an average that's neither good nor bad and is also statistically realistic. Whereas other people use a 9 or 10 as representative of the self-acceptance and loving themselves as a removal of negativity or the need to improve to mean essentially the same thing (essentially just a mindset of body acceptance vs. body positivity). Some people use a 7 to show a significant distance away from an unrealized ideal of a 10 that's always focused in that gap in a way that's self discouraging, whereas others may be focusing on self improvement with health or habits and use that gap as a positive motivator. So long as you focus on nurturing a healthy and positive mindset about yourself, the number doesnt matter. There's always someone you're a 10/10 to, but that can be especially hard to remember in environments of high conformity.
The underlying issue with the 1-10 scale is the 1-10 scale. That goes back to the social constructs you pointed out about conformity and symbolic interactionismn and I'd add stigma.
The major issues with this scale is actually the type on input you get. Within society you are far more likely to see attractive then ugly people due to influence of social media.... which would make you think people in western countries would rate themselves poorly.
I always assumed the 1-10 scale was like "Out of 10 people this is how many people would find me attractive" so a 5 would be like "50% of people would say Im attractive"
Why do people love humility in the form of insecurity? Mostly when there's a culture of looking humble people lie and pretend they don't think they're attractive just to be liked, but deep down they still know they're hot so what's the point? And in the cases where they genuinely dislike the way they look, do you think that will really make them a better person? The most evil people i've met were the jealous insecure types. Not saying these girls are like that obviously... but still, it doesn't feel good to dislike yourself.

I am a Japanese but if you think this is a problem about self-esteem its really not like that. It's the difference of the ways of thinking between Japanese and foreigners. We have the self-critical thinking so that means we try our best to be perfect not like ''be yourself" thinking you have.
Perfection is an inner quality, slowly cultivated. Physical appearance alone, outside of cleanliness, can be seen as shallow. It is the inner life that is harder to perfect and that is what makes one beautiful.
Not if it leads to insecurity and girls getting plastic surgery straight out of high school. It contributes to mental health problems down the line, you do not need to criticize your physical feature so harshly as it isn't something you can really control
Humility is beautiful but you’re confused, self hatred and self doubt is not the same. You can love and accept yourself and have confidence that you are a valuable wonderful person and still have humility. Many Western viewers seem surprised, but I think there are probably some cultural differences between Japan and the West. Basically, Japanese people openly talk about their body shape and face, even among friends and family and we talk about it as if it were casual conversation. On the other hand, I've heard that in the West, especially in America, it's taboo to talk about body shape. Probably Westerners don't talk openly about body shape and face unless they are really worried about it. So I think these opinions about the face and body of Japanese people are very different from those of Westerners in terms of seriousness. And the reason why they give them low scores is simply because we are humble.

Your interview is amazing, this was so interesting to know what japanese people think about beauty standards. And about their culture. Young people seem so open minded ! Even though they can’t tell and behave like they want to. Japan seems very strict. It is sad , not being able to be oneself. But through your interviews I see positive feelings, and maybe things will change bit by bit.
Also the narrow view of beauty set by corporations for praying on women insecurities but sexism of the past that still affect us it fine they want to put all the make up and stuff form themselves but to think need to to appear attractive if not fine and sadly most women are the latter in the world
All of them are 10/10. Your attitude, energy, personality, the things you say, the way you speak, the way you present yourself: those are the things that make you beautiful - or ugly.
No one should be ashamed of anything they have no control over. You can control your weight to a certain degree but you can't change the cheekbones you were born with(without surgery anyway) so why worry about it! You only have one body, one life so do what you can to stay healthy and comfortable in your own skin while enjoying life.
Lol Do you really take everything that Japanese women say seriously? I used to live in Japan and had relationships with many Japanese women, and they obviously know they're cute. They just try to make a good impression by being modest. At least in Japan, humble women are preferred over confident women. It's all their strategy, don't be fooled.
The complex of comparing people with eachother is the fault of Social media...People just need to be them selves, and not to worry about outher looks, soul is the most important...No matters how much beautiful you are if you are rotten inside..
All these women were beautiful. It was also wonderful to hear themselves feel confident to express their own personal views of themselves. It takes a lot of courage to express oneself on camera to an audience looking at what they pointed out they seem could be « better ». I got pretty upset watching so many people talk negatively about themselves. When they said that Americans are too confident, I wanted to say "Maybe that's true, but it's important to have confidence! Being happy with who you are will let you enjoy life more!" Being negative about yourself and others won't change who you or they are, and overall makes the world a worse place to be.
One thing I've learned from my wife, "Don't get upset at people being upset." Your history of what makes you you is not their history of what makes them them. I've also seen these type of interview questions posed to Americans. A lot of us aren't as confident as others think.
As one of the girls explained, being confident is considered to be bad in Japan. So we try to sound humble, though actually quite a few of people are secretly confident. We anyway say oh we are not that good. Don't take it too literally.
Don’t fall into the trick Japanese women Iike to lie a lot like this video. Every Japanese/Korean can tell they are lying about their self esteem in this video, they wouldn’t even think about being in interview if they have low self esteem. Japanese women wants to give answer that make the audience say “that’s not right!” It’s an effective method of manipulation and gaining favor of others in Japan culture.

So many lovely ladies. Much more humble than western women. That alone is hugely appealing to me as a western man.
Your interview is amazing, this was so interesting to know what japanese people think about beauty standards. And about their culture. Young people seem so open minded ! Even though they can’t tell and behave like they want to. Japan seems very strict. It is sad , not being able to be oneself. But through your interviews I see positive feelings, and maybe things will change bit by bit.
they are all beautiful...
Expecting this video to show how much therapy young people are in need, in Japan
2:26 YES! One lady who has proven me wrong!
Oh my gosh! Therapy ad. Nice!
Also the narrow view of beauty set by corporations for praying on women insecurities but sexism of the past that still affect us it fine they want to put all the make up and stuff form themselves but to think need to to appear attractive if not fine and sadly most women are the latter in the world
chill
they are just humble
@@ii4826 chill. They constantly compare themselves with what they see on social media due to their low self esteem
Btw its so nice to see that decora kei is still a thing 💕 💙
I think all of these women are stunning
This 2:27 girl is well educated and really pretty inside out. I love her
Omg the girl at 2:05 if I'm not mistaken is from the Amazon Prime show Love Transit!
And at 0:38 looks like Moeka Hoshi from Shōgun 😅
@@hshneo it's just similar looking features... no way she's moeka hoshi 😂😂
@@hshneo She is that type
All of them are 10/10. Your attitude, energy, personality, the things you say, the way you speak, the way you present yourself: those are the things that make you beautiful - or ugly.
BS
But in Japanese people's eyes, us foreigners are lesser than them (pure-blood Japanese)
They are so on point in their styles. Always impressed by the understanding of fashion in this country.
The girl in the gray sweater is the most shining of them all. Humble, pretty, well-spoken, etc..
No one should be ashamed of anything they have no control over. You can control your weight to a certain degree but you can't change the cheekbones you were born with(without surgery anyway) so why worry about it! You only have one body, one life so do what you can to stay healthy and comfortable in your own skin while enjoying life.
マジで名言が産まれましたね。
確かにそうですね。
ありがとう👍👍👍👍👍
They are all so beautiful
i adore the blue sweater girl!
Jacket girl is the cutest.
Japanese women are gorgeous the fact some of them think they’re ugly is insane.

確かにそうですね。
日本人の僕が言うのもなんですが、日本人女性はかなり男性に対する要求というか理想が高いと思います。つまり高収入、ハンサム、博士号とか。
そんな感じですね。
確かに美人は多いですね
@@わわ-l8w They know their value! Not like North American women who bring nothing to the table!
Great great work Takashii-San, your outfits have been cold and really dope recently my guy🫵🕺! Keep it up!
It’s so important for people to have a healthy level of appreciation and satisfaction with themselves.
the lady in the blue sweater is stunning, high cheekbones, beautiful eyebrows, amazing
Pink girl at 6:20 is funny and has a great attitude. The way she's staring at the camera its like she's looking into my soul 🤣🤣
Everyone is cute 💕
Great Video as usual!
The complex of comparing people with eachother is the fault of Social media...People just need to be them selves, and not to worry about outher looks, soul is the most important...No matters how much beautiful you are if you are rotten inside..
1:44 This girls self esteem is pure and shiny. I can tell it.
All the girls were cute and pretty. Everyone loves Japanese girls 😉😊
Really like the positivity of the 10/10 girl.
That was really interesting, id like to see a part 2
This guy made me realise that America not only has problems Japan lacks but also positivity that sometimes Japan lacks .
All these women were beautiful. It was also wonderful to hear themselves feel confident to express their own personal views of themselves. It takes a lot of courage to express oneself on camera to an audience looking at what they pointed out they seem could be « better ».
I can’t wait to see the male version of this segment and compare the two through these Japanese citizens culture beauty values.
The young lady expressing that Americans are to confident is an understatement!! 😂
✨🤓🖤✨
3:47 the japanese man in blue suit is very Handsome. Dashing 🤩
the girl with headphones is rlly cute!!!!!! i love her so much!!!!11

3:06 that girl is right, first thing I noticed are her nice eyebrows!
No, morbidly obese people shouldn’t be happy with their bodies. They should take steps to change it.
I think a balance between the two is best. being overly confident is inauthentic
Love the honesty of the Japanese.
So many pretty people in this vid looking down on themselves. The blonde lady that rated herself 10 has it right. She loves herself and her appearance without being arrogant about it 👍
Everyone practice self-love and care ❤️
Self-care is great, but calling yourself a 10 is arrogant by definition.
No one is a 10.
(9.9 we can talk, but not 10)
Self-love doesn’t mean one should rate themselves as a 10 though. It’s so shallow …
@@TheWeirdResearcher Confidence in your own looks doesn’t make you automatically shallow. You don’t have to agree. She likes how she looks, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. That’s how it should be.
