I have a few things to add: 1. The mouse cursor actually isn't limited to your ingame base framerate anymore. Version 2.10.1 released on 7/18/2024 changed this, as the mouse cursor can now render at the final generated framerate when using LSFG. 2. While the developer recommends a 60fps base for X4 at 1080p, X3 actually looks quite good at a 40fps base. It is really a matter of preference, however. Be sure to test all modes for yourself. 3. Capping base FPS isn't actually meant to solve any issues with artifacting. Instead, it's meant to prevent the GPU from reaching maximum load (effectively 90% and above). At max GPU load, a large amount of latency is added while using LSFG. Assuming the GPU never hits maximum load, a framerate cap completely solves this issue. In addition to this, it makes the frametime (time between each frame) very consistent, which results in a smoother image. 4. In regards to Max Frame Latency, the reason 1 has worked better on Nvidia and 3 has worked better on AMD is not known. However, what max frame latency does is known: It gives the GPU more time to process framepacing. A higher value (e.g. 5) will often result in a more stable output, but have higher latency. A lower value (e.g. 1) will often result in lower latency, but frames may be dropped occationally, resulting in visible stutters. This *should not* affect artifacting. Keep in mind that a value of 2 on AMD and 1 on Nvidia will limit LSFG's output to the maximum refresh rate. Why this occurs is not known either, but turning sync mode to "off" may bypass this limitation under said scenario. 5. About Performance mode, some may wonder what it does. It simply shrinks the size of the LSFG model, resulting in a smaller hit on base framerate. This will make generated frames look worse than having it disabled, but it will result in higher FPS regardless of the system. Often, when using a high base framerate (e.g. 70fps), it is very difficult to see the difference between having it on and off, so turning it on is basically free FPS. My sincere thanks to you for putting as much effort into this contest entry as you did. I wish you luck getting that reward!!!

Another thing that may be of your interest regarding that issue that you had with _Need for Speed Heat:_ I had that with NFS reboot (2016), and my solution is using _Borderless Gaming._ I decided to use it because some games just refused to render the game at the full native 2560×1600 resolution of my laptop in windowed mode, slightly cropping the vertical resolution instead. 30fps x4 can actually work well depending on the game. I locked Need for Speed Heat to 30fps and used x4 framegen. I can play at a consistent 120fps. I don't notice any visual artifacts either. If they are there, I guess they're pretty minimal.
I did exactly that for _Transformers: War for Cybertron_ (the game is capped at 30 FPS 💀); it is an absolute blessing. I did just that with NFS '16, but from 60 to 240. It requires me to use the _performance_ version of the FG algorithm, but *DAMN* doesn't it do wonders to the game.
mmm One small issue my friend. In your forza settings you're already using DLSS, so you're already upscaling. Then you double upscale it with LS1 afterward which is just counter intuitive. The only reason to use LS1 is if the game itself is not compatible with DLSS or AMD FSR. If you have in game DLSS Quality and you're on 1440, that means the game is rendering 1080p and upscaling. It's the same thing as going LS1, then 1080p windowed and upscale to 1440p fullscreen. Don't do it at the same time, because then you're re-upscaling an upscaled image. What I do for majority of games is use in game DLSS for upscaling, then use lossless scaling for frame generation, as most games don't support DLSS 3.0 (frame generation) and I also don't have a RTX 4th gen. If the game doesn't have any upscaler with it, then I use both upscaler and frame gen in lossless scaling app.
Ah yes that was a mistake on the editing part actually, before I showed the benchmark, my settings are still shown as still using DLSS, but I actually disabled it before doing the benchmark as you can see from the "Benchmark Result" picture my anti aliasing are no longer "DLSS", but "TAA Only". But it was indeed an editing mistake on my end so I am sorry for the confusion! I made sure it was native Images that were being upscaled.
This is insane, just installed it and its amazing, my fav thing is running games at 120 that are capped at 60, they feel so good, Dark Souls 3 feels so smooth
Ikr 💀I was planning to only comeback to make this video, but seeing how great this video performs, I might decide to ACTUALLY comeback to content creation on TH-cam, we'll see hahah
For me this program makes sense if you put it on the integrated video card instead of the discrete one, since all this scaling is a fairly resource-intensive process that additionally loads the discrete video card, which could spend these resources on the game, fortunately this can be done in the lossless scaling program itself. In my case, after this procedure, the scaling result is the same as using a discrete video card, but since the integrated video card is now doing the scaling, the load on the discrete video card has dropped almost 2 times (I have an RTX 3060 Laptop GPU 80w, and an integrated video card Ryzen 5800HS)
By the way, you can also use this thing on a video, just make sure it's full screen. There will be some craziness happening specially in movies where there's only 24fps, specially if you x4 it. But I'm doing it x3 and it seems fine.
Hey just got reccomended this video and Gotta say awesome job. Very well made and informative. Also I got a kinda wierd random question but when you did the frame gen testing part, when all the ducks and stuff fly across the screen, there appears the lsfg duck riding a pixelated twighlit sparkle sprite Im pretty sure that comes from a mlp (probbably flash player) platformer game thats been apparently living in my head rent free and now i need to play it. Do you by any chance remember where you got the sprite/how the game is called?? No worries if not just thought I should ask
it feels like using LS on movies is counterproductive, because it goes from like 24fps which looks normal, into an ultra smooth digital video fps which looks cheap in comparison. It's the opposite for video games, where you don't want a movie look and the higher fps, the better
Just because the program doesn't restrict which gpu models you can use to generate frames, does not actually mean that your gpu will be able to generate those frames as quick as it should and result in smooth video. I have three laptops right now, one with rtx4090, one with gtx 860m and one with gtx 330m. Gtx cards failed to make a frame gen which can be usable. Even frame gen for youtube videos are unwatchable with gtx 860m.
Oooohh, you know what, that's a great question! unfortunately it's not something in my capability to answer as I don't have VR, feel free to hop in the discord server of the software in the description, I'm sure someone there can answer you on that!
Might be some dumb questions.: 1. Are those the same with some games who supports Upscales like FSR 3.0, DLSS? (I know Lossless Scaling has diff type like LS1) 2. If I'm using Lossless Scaling, should I disable those settings in game? Or enable them both? Thank you for the video!
I'm sorry for the late respond, If a game already have built-in support like FSR 3.0 or DLSS, then it's better to use those as it'll almost always perform better than any scaling type available in Lossless Scaling, don't use them with LS. And also no, it's not really the same. For example DLSS are trained by Nvidia's supercomputer so that it will perform better and greater than any LS scaling option.
thanks for this great video. ive only used frame generation and ignored the scaling part of the software as i didn’t know how it would be useful, but now im going to go try it out
fun fact i im on a 165hz display l5pro and i was wondering why everything looked so smooth. turns out i had it open cause i pressed the custom hotkey xD
It was an editing mistake on my part, I cut the screen in that part while DLSS was still picked in the option menu. But no worries, you can check on the benchmark result that the native one had DLSS disabled as anti aliasing are set to "TAA", which is NOT possible if it was still using DLSS as the anti aliasing would show "DLAA" instead.
I would like to ask, since u are playing with ur dedicated gpu, why would you pick dedicated the one that also does the lossless scaling work? decent integrated gpus like iris xe can run gta at 40-50fps with 1080p resolution, thats more than enough power for lossless to do its work, this way u can give the dedicated gpu all the power without needing to cap the fps, obviously if u are getting like 150 or 200fps or smth the integrated gpu will struggle but if u r running at lets say 40-60fps on eg cyberpunk u can use the integrated gpu without needing to lock ur fps to like 20fps below ur current fps. Using the integrated gpu for losssless is also a great excuse to crank up the graphics on ur game if ur dgpu is giving a lot of frames already.
I need help! I have constant problem and I don't know the solution, neither can I find anything on internet to help me solve the aggrovating and frustrating bug!!! The problem is that after some time after my PC was booted into windows and stands idle or I use it for gaming or internet exploring (approximately for 30min to 1h30min), the LSFG breaks through FPS limit I've set in RTSS. Every gave, video, even .gif just get messy, monitor displays uneven frames and are in many cases pretty messy or just doubled?! My only solution is Restarting PC, that helps, but only for the same amount of time after it continuous to make me problems!!! Please HELP!!!
I am sorry but personally I haven't encountered the problem, I highly suggest you to ask in Lossless Scaling discord server to see if they have a solution for your particular issue
For some reason it was very difficult for me to grasp what scaling actually means. The old trick of making the game window smaller to increase fps gives off a very different feeling when you stretch the small window to fit the entire screen. Which is exactly what FSR and DLSS are doing behind closed doors.
@@ErtosAcc Trust me when you use the scaling algorithm such as LS1 you won't really feel like you're "stretching" a smaller window to fit your entire screen, the game would look pretty clear just like it would on native, and this way you would be able to apply it on all game unlike DLSS that's only available on supported games. Do note though that dlss would almost always outperform the scaling algorithm offered in LS1, so if you're playing a game with dlss support, just utilize that dlss support and you'll be fine! no need for extra scaling tools or software
@@jagadhie Oh that is definitely how it feels because that's literally what I need to do for the games I play, where there is no fancy option to choose resolution. I used to play on a very small window on my old laptop which made it incredibly hard to see things. This app just makes the image bigger, which would have been incredible for the past me. It doesn't create detail where previously there was none, nor do I expect it to do that.
can you try 15FPS game vs. 15FPSx4 with lossless scale? so you can upload it in 60fps to yotube. Or slow down 4 time and native game looks 15fps but lossless scale is 60...
I have amd card and tested max frame latency on rdr2 and I noticed when I set it to 1 arthur's hat flickers a lot when you move your mouse fast but when you set it to 3 I have not seen it flicker.
@@TrepTheSnake I think there might be a bit of a misunderstanding due to the wording of "after the frame hit" in ur question, care to explain more on what you mean by that? do you mean your FPS before activating frame gen, or do you mean your fps after getting the performance hit (higher gpu usage) that might occur after activating FG?
multi display mode is usefull when ur taping out and do something on your other screen. i have problems to stream the game when lossless is active. any ideas to fix that?
@@T2NWasTaken If it's delay with Frame Generation that you're talking about then unfortunately input latency have always been a drawback of Frame Generation whether you're using it with Gsync or not. It's best used in game where you play with controller as the input latency won't be as noticeable. Indeed I should've mentioned it during the frame generation chapter but I lose sight of it during the time of making the video. As of why I don't dwelve too deep regarding Gsync n HDR support settings in the video as you've noticed, that's due to my lack of access towards monitor that has GSYNC or HDR support and so unfortunately I'm unable to tests it directly. @@iiexio773 do you have any active overlay by chance? whether its steam, discord, xbox game bar, nvidia? as even fps overlay from steam or nvidia can mess up FG's output
@@DeanT. Depend on your screen size, the bigger your screen size the more noticeable it gets. For example if you have a 32 inch screen then it'll be more noticeable in comparison to 27 inch 1440p screen. For my use case, which is in a 15'6 inch 1440p laptop screen, I don't see any noticeable difference.
@@jagadhie i have a 27 inch 1440p monitor and thanks for answering. Now my question is does that LS1 scaling type with sharpness set to 1 really scale 1080p to 1440p?
@@DeanT. Sharpness doesn't determine what resolution you're scaling from. It does exactly what it says, determine the sharpness of the scaling just in case some game are more blurry than the others. In order to determine the resolution you're scaling from, set the game to windowed mode in the resolution that you desire, in your case, windowed mode 1920x1080. Then press the scale button, it should automatically scale towards your native resolution which is 1440p.
Lossless Scaling is the best kept secret in budget PC gaming. If everyone knew about it, sales of the RTX 4060 would be zero. I played Forza Horizon 4 for over 100 hours on a GTX 670 at 1440p60 with 2x scaling and 2x frame gen. Why? Not because I don't have better hardware but because LS results were so good, it just seemed like a waste of data to re-download it. I was as competitive in online racing as I usually would be and I am sensitive to input lag. I am also good at compensating for it but that just means I am more aware of it. I started playing FPS games with the original Shareware release of DOOM, which ran at 18fps on our 386. But it was a very consistent 18fps, which is worth infinitely more than an unlocked framerate that wildly fluctuates between 120 and 300 fps. If you run your online shooter unlocked, it doesn't matter what fps you're getting because it is definitely worse than just having a consistent 60fps. It is sort of like the people who think mouse and keyboard is superior. 20 years ago that was true but these days, anyone who says controller sucks simply has mediocre fine motor skills. I'll still use mouse and keyboard for 4x games and retro games that don't support Xinput. But I play online shooters with a controller and I do much better with controller. I always get a good chuckle when someone marvels at the fact I'm using an XBox controller. It isn't magic. Just good fine motor skills. And the fact a controller has a defined center, which really helps with flick shots. I can do more with the tip of my thumb than most people can do with an entire arm. The fact movement, camera, zoom and fire are all analog on a controller allows for point shooting, which is a real life defensive shooting technique, also typically applied to clays and bird hunting with a shotgun. Frame gen worked on this video - got 110fps. Definitely a lot smoother and didn't see any noticeable artifacting, even when things were rapidly moving across the screen. However, in the scenario I would most like to use it for video, it doesn't work. Basically, YT is the only streaming video platform where LS works. And only for frame gen; scaling doesn't work right. And something tells me if you are running YT premium and watching copy protected content, it is just going to blank screen just like with Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, Disney+ and Paramount Plus. Basically, if you want to upscale from the 720p data saver to 1440p or higher, you're going to need an upscaling box. Even then, IDK if it will actually work. You'd think it would if you are displaying via DP because that doesn't support HDCP anyway.
@@Ezelna03 Ideally, yes, you should not use any type of scaling options in-game such as DLSS, FSR, Intel XeSS et cetera if you wanted to use the scaling from lossless scaling. Though usually if the case is "DLSS" and you're able to utilize it, DLSS almost always perform better than any options offered in Lossless Scaling. Hence why the best use case for Lossless Scaling are in games that doesn't offer you scaling options like DLSS or FSR out of the box.
@@jugurthaacab518 Yup very much so, especially in story games where you won't care that much about input latency (one of the main downside of lossless scaling especially for frame gen). I also mainly use it for story games rather than competitive games.

There are also quite a lot of tutorial materials on YT that covers the topic of smooth animating with premiere, you should check those out! These kinds of editing definitely take time though, so patient is also a big part of the game 😅
I hope you do win the contest hosted on steam by the dev for LS! Good luck!
didnt know that this is how it works, learned a lot ty mate.
You're welcome mate, glad it could help!
mmm One small issue my friend.

Dude you did a comeback after 4 years 💀
Ikr 💀I was planning to only comeback to make this video, but seeing how great this video performs, I might decide to ACTUALLY comeback to content creation on TH-cam, we'll see hahah
Sorry for the late reply but I don't think I know sorry, I kinda just.. randomly search for sprites
@jagadhie no worries, I actually managed to find it. Its called Adventure Ponies and apparently theres a sequel. The more you know i guess lol
Your Videos Are Awesome
I'm using lossless scaling with my integrated GPU and it really increase my fps to 30 - 60/75 fps
it feels like using LS on movies is counterproductive, because it goes from like 24fps which looks normal, into an ultra smooth digital video fps which looks cheap in comparison. It's the opposite for video games, where you don't want a movie look and the higher fps, the better
incredible video.
Awesome video 👌🔥
great video 🙏🏻
Just because the program doesn't restrict which gpu models you can use to generate frames, does not actually mean that your gpu will be able to generate those frames as quick as it should and result in smooth video. I have three laptops right now, one with rtx4090, one with gtx 860m and one with gtx 330m. Gtx cards failed to make a frame gen which can be usable. Even frame gen for youtube videos are unwatchable with gtx 860m.
I learned many things from a duck, thank you🎉
Great content. 😊
NIce detailed vid ! Do you think it would be possible to use LS in vr ?
Oooohh, you know what, that's a great question! unfortunately it's not something in my capability to answer as I don't have VR, feel free to hop in the discord server of the software in the description, I'm sure someone there can answer you on that!
Might be some dumb questions.:
1. Are those the same with some games who supports Upscales like FSR 3.0, DLSS? (I know Lossless Scaling has diff type like LS1)
2. If I'm using Lossless Scaling, should I disable those settings in game? Or enable them both?
Thank you for the video!
I'm sorry for the late respond,
If a game already have built-in support like FSR 3.0 or DLSS, then it's better to use those as it'll almost always perform better than any scaling type available in Lossless Scaling, don't use them with LS. And also no, it's not really the same. For example DLSS are trained by Nvidia's supercomputer so that it will perform better and greater than any LS scaling option.
thanks for this great video.
ive only used frame generation and ignored the scaling part of the software as i didn’t know how it would be useful, but now im going to go try it out
Thank you for your video
You're very much welcome! @geron0041
It feels weird to watch movies above 24fps, it's like it's being fast forwarded but it's not.
fun fact i im on a 165hz display l5pro and i was wondering why everything looked so smooth. turns out i had it open cause i pressed the custom hotkey xD
Keren amat lu 🐤🙌🏻
for 4K gaming, would you suggest upscaling from 1080p or 2560p ? I imagine, the lower the resolution, the more artifacting / visual loss occurs?
@@inconspicuousboar3177 2560p would be much preferred, as yes, you guessed correctly, the lower the resolution = more artifacting / visual loss.
Thanks for the guide, but why are you using lossless scaling with DLSS? (in F1 you were showing your settings and DLSS Quality was on).
Это самое понятное видео по этой программе. Хорош чел
Thank you! glad you enjoyed it!
What software/program did you use to edit this video?
For scaling video you need to set the scale factor manually

Frame gen turns off a lot of pcs with rx7000 cards. The only fix is enabling performance mode
Do you think using frame generation is ideal in situations where my CPU is bottlenecking performance while the GPU is below 70% or so?
Frame generation not so much, but for scaling purpose yes. I think FG need some headroom in CPU usage.
Lossless scaling is one of two apps thats preventing me from ditching windows all together.
It's just too good.
I know right! totally agree with you on that one:D
lmao i use ctrl+alt+L too cuz that makes sense, also the biggest downside of this app is that it doesnt support fsr 3
3:17 buddy said _in f🦆ct_
15 FPS Game wouldn't work well with frame generation so I don't think I will do those. As a base the minimum is 30 fps at the very least.
I have amd card and tested max frame latency on rdr2 and I noticed when I set it to 1 arthur's hat flickers a lot when you move your mouse fast but when you set it to 3 I have not seen it flicker.
this this just works on any game and gpu?
lesgoooo
When we say recommended base framerate of 60, is it before or after the frame hit of activating frame gen of lossless scaling ?
@@TrepTheSnake Before activating frame gen of LS. 60 is the base recommended for X3/X4 though, 30 works just fine for X2 frame gen.
@@jagadhie i had different answers here 😬
@@TrepTheSnake I think there might be a bit of a misunderstanding due to the wording of "after the frame hit" in ur question, care to explain more on what you mean by that? do you mean your FPS before activating frame gen, or do you mean your fps after getting the performance hit (higher gpu usage) that might occur after activating FG?
Mantull keren bang
multi display mode is usefull when ur taping out and do something on your other screen. i have problems to stream the game when lossless is active. any ideas to fix that?
Gsync update was great but there's still an issue with delay :/ why you haven't mentioned it?
Cheers!
Hey Whenever i use lossless scaling my display suddenly gets dimmer and when i turn it of it's back to normal Have you experienced it????
I've got a friend that had both integrated and dedicated gpu in his laptop, their screen gets dim when they used any capture API other than DXGI. Try setting the GPU to your integrated gpu and then your capture API to DXGI to see if it solve ur problem.
@@jagadhie Actually the problem was with my display setting I had "Automatically manage color for apps" option on which led to the display getting dimmer

the thing with muliple displays... i actually have to use the option to run game on my 2nd screen and scale to my main screen because if i try to use it while game is running on my main screen, FG just wont work.. the original frames are shown incorrectly and game is a stuttery mess

does native 1440p with 1080 to 1440p have noticable difference in image quality?

You'd think it would if you are displaying via DP because that doesn't support HDCP anyway.

so if i using scaling from lossless app i need to turn off scaling from in game ?
@@Ezelna03 Ideally, yes, you should not use any type of scaling options in-game such as DLSS, FSR, Intel XeSS et cetera if you wanted to use the scaling from lossless scaling. Though usually if the case is "DLSS" and you're able to utilize it, DLSS almost always perform better than any options offered in Lossless Scaling.
Hence why the best use case for Lossless Scaling are in games that doesn't offer you scaling options like DLSS or FSR out of the box.
is it really worth it i want to use only for story games to get better fps
@@jugurthaacab518 Yup very much so, especially in story games where you won't care that much about input latency (one of the main downside of lossless scaling especially for frame gen). I also mainly use it for story games rather than competitive games.

Yes! both the scaling and frame generation function
