- Polearm Runewords are the go-to weapons for mercenaries, due to the sheer power some of them can bring - though most people don't even know half the runewords that can go into polearms. Today, we're going to solve that, though to save my runes, I'm not making them all in polearms, that would be insanity, but every last one of these work in polearms in Diablo 2 Resurrected.

Someone gave me a free insight for my merc, gave me a stealth, rhyme, and a sprit in a sword. I'm only level 30, and I just got back into the game. This got me super excited cuz it seems like he kitted me out pretty good for the early game for my bone Necro :D
Lore (Ort+Sol) is a great early game caster helm too.
I just beat hell and I still use rhyme, spirit and have insight on my merc.
I love the Runeword series. Great way to get the info out to the masses, and easily understandable.
TH-cam is showing me all of your runewords builds from a year ago today . I went and liked and commented on all of them , as well as watching them all the way to the end . LoL !

honestly never having played with High runes before (never found any when I played ten years ago) I just enjoy having insight on my merc with my sorceress. I mean I completely built her wrong but at least I can hold frozen orb for a week without running out of mana. (I actually used an insight staff before but at the end of NM I just noticed I need the extra DMG from Spirit. +1 to all skills just is a crazy boost to an ice sorc)
Insight really is one of the best runewords for the mercenaries - honestly, when doing MF on a cold sorc, I prefer it over Infinity (infinity I stick to for Lightning though)
Found my first Eth Giant Thresher today and it had no sockets and so i added sockets to it in the cube and i got what i wanted, 5 sockets so i made Obediance in it. Great video btw.

Thankfully it sounds like they've finally fixed it, but yea, the login issues have been pretty rough. (today's looked like the character servers)

You know, back in the day a huuuuge amount of us were kids playing this. We got good, did Baal runs but never really understood how to build properly, how to actually run for high runes etc. We would see all the older kids with all these sick fully built characters with enigma and all. Now it's our chance to be those big kids with the big toys! Even tho I'm 30 now
the problem with all the trash items are just being absurdly expensive. The D2R team needs to rebalance the runeword's creation and make it reasonable. This means making possibly Insight and Spirit expensive. but I rather be able to enjoy other runewords that I've never thought about using.
I have BotD and Bramble on my act 2 merc... supporting my summon mancer. 😊

In d2 I did run polearms in a Leap Attack/Whirlwind Barbarian back in the day on offline single player before running Sword & Board in the later parts of hell difficulty.
In the really early days, polearms and spears used to be the meta for whirlwind :) - they sadly got nerfed in later patches unfortunately, but they are still fun for reach :)
Yup, how it goes. Though it won't stop someone from making a completely awesome legacy build from the dark ages of D2 times past to show some of these young wipper snappers how we had to play classic D2 lol.

I made an Insight recently. With a 4 socket partizan I found in act 5 (normal). I think my Sorceresses Merc is set for a while. I don't even have the holy freeze guy yet, lol. Made it anyway, for the future and to replace his aging Malice scythe.

Rift is a waste on polearm definitely. But i think rift is more than for meme build. It find its place for a riftsin(kicksin) build. It is really powerful and effective for that build. The fire and magic damage added to the kick directly. The frozen orb proc simply do A Lot of damage and AOE chill effect. It supplementing such kick/trap hybrid very well especially when they are usually struggle for the first kill against a large group of lightning immune. One more fun/beauty fact is that the riftsin is able to do all type of dmg pretty effectively, fire(death sentry,rift added fired dmg on kick), ice(rift's frozen orb proc), lightning(traps), poison(venom), magic (a little bit from rift but add up quickly due to fast kicking), physical (kick/CB).
Unless I'm going absolute Min-max, I actually favor Voice of Reason for a similar effect, but a lot cheaper (it's a pinch weaker, but with the resist changes... I'll need to retest) - that said, I also tend to favor crushing blow over elemental so I may be biased.
@@Alzorath Voice of reason is surely a great choice, as it can be put into a pb for its lovely -30 as and indestructible mod. Cannot be frozen is also a great mod before getting ur hand on raven frost or saving a ring slot.
For me, the main concern is that it use same rune lem and ko as rift. That make me felt wired to upgrade to rift spending the same but valuable lem rune. Otherwise, it's a no brainer for me.
For me, the cold res change didn't discount the power of voice of reason as it already perform similarly to rift in classic lod. But yeah as you mention, it is just ever so slightly weaker, all things considered.
CB v elemental, I think it just come down to wt you are hunting. If you hunt mephisto/andy 24/7, CB is objectively better. If you like clearing maps like the pit, aoe effect of elemental dmg perform(and looks) better. Skills/stat-wise a riftsin have no big difference to a more traditional kick/trap hybrids. For me, I will try to balance both( use g-face instead of nightwing).
A talking about ctc frozen orb and assassin, I have a yet to test question. Is that a ww sin can proc frozen orb (from chaos claw), while ww-ing with blade shields active?
What I read online is inconsistent. Some say blade shield work for ctc on attack but not ctc on strike. But some say the opposite...
In legacy, the CtC on Attack is able to trigger with blade shield, and ctc on strike is not able to trigger.
As far as the WW/Blade Shield question - I haven't tested it, though rift wouldn't work with ww, since you have to get ww from claws.
It'd have to be tested with something like "of firebolt/lightning/icebolt/chain lightning equipment"
@@Alzorath Thx for the quick reply! Since chaos's frozen orb is ctc on strike, it probably won't work(sad face) with both ww/bs.
I know bs help proc frozen orb from rift(for riftsin build) but just wonder whether you can make use of the ctc on strike frozen orb on chaos claw effectively( especially in conjunction with ww)...the answer seems no=(
It never occurred to my Obedience was a good polearm rune word for act2 merc....i think you're right, i might just use that on my current play through...

Yea, it's often forgotten about because of the caster focus of the meta unfortunately :( - but Obedience is a really nice runeword in general.
If you want to look at it a slightly different way, for the majority of players that might play for years and never see a high rune or top end uniques: Insight and Obedience are hands down the best budget focused Runewords for Polearms. Insight gets favored on builds where your character does 100% of the damage and your Merc will be a stat stick for Meditation... and Obedience if you need/want your Merc to pump higher dmg out for either taking out Immunes or getting first kills (for instance a Necro needing bodies to raise into Skeletons, or bodies as fuel for Corpse Explosion). Use Obedience if your build doesn't suck mana like a sponge, it's a very high powered budget option.

Destruction is effing great! I have a wind wolf Druid that uses fury and feral rage with his stormlash to proc (synergiezed) tornado/ not to mention static field/
So I have all the cool Druid fire skills and wind skills going while I slay the. I’m werewolf form.

Does doom -cold resist work just for the merc or can work for both char and merc?
just for the individual using it - if the merc is using it, it's just for the merc's attacks/abilities, if the player is using it, it's just for the player's attacks/abilities

Is Rift a good runeword for a Zealot/Fury Druid meme build?
The most EVIL thing a game creator has ever done is make polearm AND spear weapon classes! 😭 I accidentally made a RalTirTalSol spear yesterday since a Fuscina sounds and kind of looks like a polearm atleast to someone that has been THIRSTING for a 4 socket polearm drop for a long time! 😂🤣 Thankfully a 4 socket Partizan dropped for me today and now I am a proud owner of a level 15 meditation aura Insight with 206% increased damage and 6 critical strike. So a Mid+ roll I would say. 💖
lol, funnily enough the polearm-spear thing isn't the cruelest thing (though it is a common frustration), but we'll actually get into the weirdest nonsense in some of the future runeword videos ;)

Try bashing your head trying to find 2 os scepters for your starter Frenzy barb THEN farm the Countess for 2x TirEl... only to find out that Scepters DON'T actually count as Maces, even though that's their class
@@StirbMensch be thankful you only lost a Tir and El. The good ones I lost with my mistake were Ral and Sol. Ral is super important for all sort of recipes and runewords which is why picking up all Tal runes is very important since three of them can be cubed into a Ral. 😊 Imagine making a Ber mistake! 😭

On my offline play I found Insight to be broken on a low to mid level sorc. That meditation aura with a few points in warmth got me through nightmare with out having to put mana pots in my belt.
It is extremely powerful - there are skills that can outpace its mana recovery - it is why you'll often see me swap from 1:3 on potions to 3:1 on potions in nightmare
I didn’t realise I couldn’t make Insight from a 4 socket trident, waste of a SOL rune haha.
lol, you'd be surprised how many people have done the "the runestxt patch doesn't work" reply to me for legacy, and a spear has been the issue - it's an extremely common thing :)
I prefer strength than honor because of the crushing blow, And a 2 socketed polearm is less harder to get than a 5 socketed one.
weirdly I find a ton of 5 socket polearms lol... getting 2 socket items is usually the pain for me lol, since very few items cap at that amount.
Are 2h weapons actually viable for player characters (besides Leaf)?
I have seen by now a number of interesting 2h swords and axes that made me wonder whether such a weapon could make a proper build.
Yes, a lot of fury druids use 2handers because they do not want to block in their shapeshift forms because it causes hit recovery
I used them on my charge paladin...not sure if it was optimal or not though.
What about whirlwind barbs ?
Viable yes, though only a couple are optimal (as JJ mentioned - fury druids are the main users - though there are other niche builds or 'second tier builds')
Spears used to be solid for it too, thanks to some crazy damage, until they changed how ww worked.

I know you don't like BOTD but if you find a ZOD the rarest rune, would you trade it? that's not fun at all. So I found one and I'm planning to make a BOTD. My choice would be a fury druid (i don't like barbaros nor paladins) . Which base would you recommend me to use? I read great poleaxe eth is a good option for it.

Eth Thunder Maul is your best BOTD option for a druid. It's massive damage and on a druid it swings faster then a War Pike. Cheers

Insight for farming as it makes a whole inventory of potions obsolete (edit for fat fingers)

Nope, negative resists only apply to the active user

I'm about to do the respec from Fire Druid to Fury @ lvl 40 and in need of a 2H weapon to replace my LEAF stick, still Act 1 NM.
I'm stuck between using a Honor or Crescent Moon.
Out of the two, if you already have life leech, I prefer crescent moon, at least if you're dead set on polearms.
@@Alzorath After thinking about it crescent moon will help with physical immunes.
@@Alzorathbut flip side is life leech only works on physical damage so Honor's its deadly strike would be better for life leech.
insight is probably the only one useful and can make without struggling for them runes

are the main "cheap ones" (Ko and Fal are actually really common to get, usually getting at least one of each on a normal playthrough)

If you get two call to arms on a dual wield barb do you get double bonuses to the shouts ? Runewords aren't unique right ? Since we can have double dream...
What other runeword do other characters use on their off hand when switching for prebuff ?
it is not recommended to use on barb since you usually invest in shouts as a barb already and CTA is not a damage stick. That said yes the dual CTA will stack. Edit: dual CTA on the off hand as a prebuff is interesting and cant hurt. I missread your intentions
As an oskill, it doesn't give full points to the barbarian, so you are just as well off with dual hoto or dual warcry weapons. :(
As far as offhand - spirit, splendor, lidless eye, etc just plus skills

It's worth noting that even with the oskill cap, you can still get +4 to your bo/bc on barb with cta. 1 from the +1allskills, and +3 from each of the relevant oskills. Super expensive just for an extra point on each hand tho

For Mercenaries usually, there is an argument for Doom on a Might Merc or Fury Druid - but it depends on the build.
i think insight is the best polearm runeword
It is both a decent choice for a mercenary and makes early/mid game gameplay for caster a lot more fluid - not forcing them to pick up every mana potion that drops or carrying a butload of manapots in the inventory.
Contrary i absolutely hate infinity. Conviction piercing immunities is bad for the game in itself, as it dumbs down the game for casters. Making it available to every character on top of that is just bad game design, to the point where some sorc players consider it "necessary" because they can't be bothered to have two elements skilled
Infinity is actually pretty powerful for non-casters too, essentially giving you ITD as long as the mercenary is alive.

I have a few crafting videos out, though most of them I want to remake in D2R (they're all recorded in D2L) - though I only covered the 4 schools of "Crafted Items" and the recipes I use a decent amount or recommend learning... I could go through and do a full-crafting video (sans rune upgrades - since the dedicated El to Zod video is still weirdly trucking along lol, and I'm slightly curious about it in a strange almost science experiment sort of way)

there's a few that can beat hell, though I want to test if they fixed something or not before I do a proper werebear build - since a few in legacy were actually working at half power due to a bug.
There is absolutely no situation possible for justifying the using of runewords like wind and malice.. none at all
Malice is actually one of the best low level runewords for getting through normal (especially if you have a basic level of replenish life - such as a merc's natural healing or an a2 merc's prayer for the player)
