    This sinuously curved Kris was crafted in the Phillipines; the sharpened blade is of 5160/D2 high carbon steel. It was tempered to a hardness of 58-60 HRC. The blade has a band of brass integrated into the blade itself near the base.
    The grip is of carved wood. Between the grip and the blade is a ferrule of brass. The scabbard is carved from wood and is fitted with decorative bands of rattan.

    It's a self defence weapon..The keris is designed with a philosophy , it's a symbol of pride, identity..whether its from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, or Philippines. The keris also known as the weapon of a warrior's or King's..

    The waves actually represent various different things like a serpent or the waves of the ocean. Its a very spiritual design with strong beliefs. However, it does not represent how many kills. the added waves usually represent handing them down to the next generation and they usually stop at 8 waves. The notches on the "hand guard' unually represent how many kills were made with it. The Philippines Kris is for battles. Many are for ceremonial purposes but that one was used for battle. The hitting point is about 3/4's the way up from the handle, not the end, which you will gain much more slicing power. Its one deadly beautiful blade indeed.

    I actually bought the TFW Kris #5 from you guys a little while back, and I have to say they are unique, fantastic, and very high quality blades! A tad shorter than what I'm used to, and the lack of a handguard worries me, but they are incredibly effective weapons and TFW definitely knows what they're doing in terms of tradition and quality!

      Lack of handguard because we carry shield and a buckler so that might explain why. But my family is a royal guard so maybe it is different in the Philippines

    Young Man ! There is a traditional Filipino hacking bolo. The Badang , you can fell a good sized oak tree using it ìf you have the patience. But the Kris is an intimate weapon you don't really pull it out of its " Bahina " or scabbard unless you really want to use it .

      when you're alone in the privacy of your home you can pull it out for familiarization and practice purposes. .but it is unethical to pull it out when you're in a group. .

    every moro kris has an ancestral spirit on it according to our beliefs and it is also the bridge or a key to contact our ancestral spirit on it... we have ceremony on it we call it "guana" and "Umon" and "TuNung ... and also in every design of it has meaning even is curve.. the wave doesnt mean the number of killed but the meaning of wave curve it indicate the location the clan and what is thr ancestral spirit .... we have so many ancestral spririt

    Our ancestors never take their kris out of scabbard unless their going to kill someone not to test the blade by cutting trees it’s sole purpose is kill an enemy. At least to my understanding.

    I know what I'm getting for Christmas now. I would love to see the sansibar in action. Also I read in a blade history book that the waves had some possible religious meanings.

    • @kultofathena6217
      @kultofathena6217  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nathan Eby if you link it to southern Philippines culture then yes their is. I like the sansibar as well. TFWs sansibar is lighter than traditional ones. The Sansibar was used by Antonio Illustrisimo he was a well known bolo fighter in WWII that used that blade shape.

    • @boqtheboneless
      @boqtheboneless 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kult of Athena antonio ilustrisimo may have used the sansibar,maybe a few times on certain situations,but he used the kalis also known as kris more and that is where he based his techniques from.hence the name of his art "kalis ilustrisimo"

    • @kultofathena6217
      @kultofathena6217  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Legend Kalis translates to sword in certain dialects and I've never heard of him using the Kris before, maybe he did. He's known for using the sansibar in WWII.

      As Tom said in the video it's more of a status symbol. This is the first time I ever heard that it represents a kill count. Typically the more distinct the waves in the blade the more renowned the owner is.

      this wasnt just for status. this was used for battle especially during the Moro-american conflict. the waves represent the moro people. it is called "Okir" which means wave of the sea/lake.. you should see a moro make one.

    It's like the Roman Gladius to be used with a medium sized made of wood to look like a third sized triangular Scotum with angle cuts to stop blades from cutting across the top of your skull and scalping you. Some shields were like the Spanish Round Buckler which was copied. The Moros and native Filipinos used them in close quarters combat in the jungle environment to ambush Spanish troops on patrol. The Spanish had many outposts all over the Philippines and hardly ventured out into the interior because it was very dangerous. Firearms were very useless in very tight quarters of roads covered by jungle. The Spanish set out roads like Camino Del Royals with the sides cleared so that travelers and soldiers would have clear fields of fire left or right so no one can ambush them or have time to defend themselves. By the 1800s when Spanish Forces had better firearms and repeating rifles with bayonets from the Remington Rolling Block to the latest 1893 Mauser rifles. Spanish troops in the Philippines used the short sword along with the bayonet to defend themselves when marching along country roads. The Filipinos come from the Malay stock of people who are adapt to close quarter combat with edged weapons.
