as a Road motorcycle racer we use clutch only when shifting down and no clutch when shifting up. I was surprised when you said the opposite is true for dirt biking.
I always suggest using the clutch when you can, for the transmission of the bike. When you are racing and trying to get faster it can save a little time working through the gears without the clutch! Just make sure to let the throttle off so it doesn’t add additional stress to the motor!
this was super helpful. my nieghbor just gave his '73 kawasaki g5 from when he was a kid. its my first bike and i just realized i have absulutly no idea how to ride it lol. thanks for the help!

I am going to ride my friends dirt bike in the am for the 1st time. I sure do hope I can come back on here say yay I did it!! You explain things perfectly. I can understand everything you talked about. Thank you! I am clear instead of confused!
Before I got my dirtbike, I was nervous about having to shift and giving it gas and all that. But it’s simpler now. After you take off in 1st gear, pull the clutch in while letting completely off the throttle, shift to 2nd and let out the clutch a bit slower than you pulled it in while giving it a tiny good bit of gas. Don’t be afraid to do it, just try it
These were my exact thoughts when I bought my KLR250. I'm slowly get better, just im really nervous to ride on the main roads and stall. And I gotta use the rear brakes more.

Thank you so much this helped after my big crash! I was in 4th gear, a leech was on my boots i shook it off but i accidentally hit the shifter and it went to 1st then tossed me and broke my leg! But now I am more aware
I am so glad this helped! I don’t like to hear you went through a big crash, but we all do! The most important part is you learn from your mistakes, and you get back up on the dirt bike! Hope you the best recovery!
I like to suggest always using the clutch to change between any gear! You just don’t have to worry about using the clutch an throttle together unless you are just starting to roll on the dirt bike for the first time.

Just bought my first dirtbike yesterday 2024 ttr230 still getting use to clutch. Taking off from first gear and slowing down for corners ate where im struggling and takes me a long time to find neutral
Yes the best way to stand on your bike will be on the balls of your foot! However you won’t be able to change gears from this position. So you will have to move your foot up towards the gear shifter to shift. Once you shift you will want to move your foot back to where you were, standing on the balls of your feet! This may feel awkward at first, but keep practicing and this will soon become very natural! Thanks for watching! I will make a video on this topic soon, so make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it! Stay Rad!
@@RadAdventureDude it's a carb spent today took the carb bowl off cleaned jets tweaked the air fuel mix screw alittle too losse and it came off when riding it dosent bog untell higher throttle but it may be running rich I'm goana turn off my gas and empty the carb because imma let the bike sit untell I get a new carb and intake manifold
Yes getting the jets and carburetor all cleaned will really help you! Also make sure the jet you are using is suggested for the altitude! That is a big thing I see here in Colorado!
So when im shifting up i hold the clutch let go of the gas and shift up and let go of the clutch and back onto the gas correct? and then shifting down i just let go of the gas and shift down? please respond
I always like to use the clutch shifting up or down when possible to help save the dirt bikes transmission! When Shifting up your are correct, but when you shift up make sure your rear wheel is already spinning. If you are moving slow like coming out of a corner, you will want to let the clutch out while applying a little throttle. This will keep the bike from stalling out! When shifting down I still like to use the clutch when possible! If I am going down hill or coming into a corner I will shift down without the clutch just to keep the engine brake engaged to continue helping me slow down! Otherwise use the clutch when possible to help save your dirt bike! Hope this helped you out! Always feel free to ask any questions you have!
Oh awesome, there is no better time to learn! So yes when shifting gears let off the throttle completely, then pull the clutch in and shift your gears! What kind of dirt bike do you have?
If you let your clutch out too fast, without the proper amount of throttle on you will stall the bike. Then you can’t really let the clutch out too slow! Hope this helps!
Cheers dude! Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out on my future content! I post new riding tips every week, and I’m here to help so always feel free to ask any questions you have!
I wish this video showed toe position on shift lever. The boots I have makes it hard to get foot positioned under shift lever. I feel I have to look down to see because the boot is stiff enough I cannot feel shift lever. I drive manual car transmission, so that part of using clutch and all is not my issue.
I will put a video link below of a video I believe will demonstrate that better for you! Hope this helps! How To Shift A Dirt Bike With Boots! th-cam.com/video/Foq8qtHQKmk/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much! Haha yeah winter riding can get interesting! Here in Colorado the ground is all white too. It is close to time to go to the desert and get back on the bike! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have!
The biggest thing for me was getting it into that first gear without stalling and I've been working on not feathering the clutch as much and it's been going good! Idk if its working so well because my back tire is spinning out when I let the clutch out but haven't stalled on takeoff in awhile! I watched your other vid too it helped new a lot!
That’s great! All it takes is time, and it will become very natural. If your wheel is spinning out you could possibly use less throttle when releasing the clutch, or release the clutch a little slower! I am so stoked you are getting better and finding these videos useful! Keep up the great work!
You want to get in a gear where you still have acceleration but it is still a long enough gear so you do not get too high in the RPMs. So the lower gears like first and second have more acceleration. Then the higher the gears like third and fourth will have more speed. Second and third will actually be a better gear to stay in because they have acceleration, but also have a longer gear before the next gear is needed! Also these middle gears will have a more mellow power than first, and be easier to ride around in! Hope this helps, and you get your bike fixed soon!
@@RadAdventureDude thank you bro !! I also heard it’s better to stay in second or third then first because that’s why my bike got stuck , well at least that’s what the mechanic said
Yes you can find some neutral indicators to go on your dirt bike! However, just keep practicing with the gears, and just like in a car it will get easier with time!
Yo bro I have a question not sure if it was mentioned. When you switch to first gear and ur stationary and let off on the clutch it kills the engine. Why doesn’t that happen when u let off the clutch while ur driving on the bike?
Great question Gavin! That is because when the rear wheel is not moving it will make the rpm’s drop as you release the clutch, and that will stall the dirt bike! When the rear wheel is moving, then the momentum of the rear wheel keeps the dirt bike from stalling while your moving! Hope this helps!
I'm getting my first dual-sport bike in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for all kinds of info. I'll mainly be riding it for short trips around town and to work. When I drove a stick-shift car (100 years ago) I always just popped it into neutral when I was coming to a stop instead of down-shifting. It just seemed easier. I'm assuming this would be OK on a bike as well?
That’s awesome I’m glad you’re getting a new bike! Yes you can definitely put the dirt bike in neutral when coming to a stop, but you may find it harder than a stick shift to just pop into neutral. Also on a dirt bike as you just pull in the clutch you can bring the dirt bike to the stop while not worrying about stalling the dirt bike! I always enjoy being able to help so ask any questions you have!
This helped a lot because I used to have a ttr 110e and neutral was under gear 1, I’m planning on getting a yz125 and the mechanics are different but this vid helped a lot so that’s a subscribe

On two strokes the engine break will be much less than a torquey 4 stroke! I always try to suggest using the clutch when possible just to save your bikes transmission!
@@RadAdventureDude I just got my first bike about a month ago (2009 klx 140l) and haven’t been using clutch to shift down do you think my bike will be ok?
@@alantaylor6691 I’ve ridden all my life. When I was 3 I started ona crf50. After this comment I ended up with a cr85r, vforce 3, fmf fatty and fmf shorty, hot rods crank, wiseco top end, fresh cylinder. However I was watching this video as I was confused as how to use a clutch.
@@490Adrian Since you were 3?! Lucky you! How old are you now? I'm 44 and total noob to motorbikes. Just learnt to use a clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc 2-stroke dirt bike the other day. But I want a dirt bike of my own! I've recently moved to a 150 acre property so I have all the dirt riding land I could want right at my front door. I could ride everyday if I had a bike of my own.
@@alantaylor6691 12yo at the moment. If I were you I’d get a 230 or a new Honda 250 quad, not too much guts but definitely some bottom end. The Honda 250 quads have a odd technology where there is a clutch but you also can shift without it and no harm, not like shifting without the clutch is bad if you power shift but it’s a good beginner bike. Another thing to look at is a 400ex it’s a trail quad but it’s got some guts to make you happy, just be careful the first couple rides, after you’re adapted. Just make sure to keep up on maintenance and have a tool box filled with goodies.
@@490Adrian A quad would be fun, thanks for the suggestions I'll keep them in mind. How did you get on with learning to use the clutch on your motorbike since your original comment? Got the hang of it? I've had a couple of rides with the clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc but I still have to think about what I'm doing and have stalled a couple of times coming out of bogs. Still haven't 100% got the feel of the throttle/clutch yet.
I am so glad it helped I have an entire playlist of beginner dirt bike tips you may find helpful as well! Im stoked you are getting better on your bike and get to enjoy the freedom it brings! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have I am always here to help!
That’s a tough one, make sure your bike has gears, and isn’t an automatic. You could get by with no clutch lever. However the gear shifter is crucial to getting through the gears! Replace the shifter, and you will be good to go!
I like to use the gears to slow the bike down, so I will shift down one gear at a time when I am braking. This will also put you in a lower gear with more acceleration for when you are ready get back on the throttle!
First time on a dirtbike was today.. Got on a 110cc w/ no clutch.. Then they put me on a 450cc w/ the clutch obviously. Helluva learning curve.. But I learned it, got the bike started, into first gear, and then took off. Bike was so powerful, I just kept it in 1st gear. Also due to fear, and not knowing what the process would be to downshift.. If I got into 2nd and 3rd gear, and then wanted to slow and turn, or even make a u-turn, do I hit the foot break to slow the bike down first, then downshift from 3rd to 2nd to 1st ? I didn’t know the process, so I didn’t even try lol.
Im so glad to hear you getting out there and learning! With a clutch make sure you pull the clutch in when using the back break, or the bike will have a much better chance to stall out! Use the clutch and gear shifter to shift up. The bike will have more speed with out being as torquey and it will help you keep the front wheel on the ground. If you get to second and third gear, and now want to slow down let off the throttle, and you will feel the motor already slowing you down. Use the shifter to shift down one gear, and you will feel the motor begin to slow you down even more. When coming in to a corner, practice using the back break while pulling the clutch in to help slow and guide the bike around the corner! I really hope this helps you! Im stoked your getting out on the bike! Keep it up! What has been your favorite part about learning to ride a dirt bike? Radical Adventure Dude Word ! Thanks for the tip about a) getting off the throttle, then b) downshifting a gear, then c) pulling in the clutch, then d) using the back / foot brake. I gotta get those repetitions in. Now when I’m back in first and wanna accelerate again, can I just let the clutch go and hit the throttle (smooth), or do I need to feather the clutch and ease the throttle, like how you do when you first get the bike going ? Sorry for asking so many questions, just love learning this need hobby, and then executing it, having the power and control in my hands..
@@TopshelfJunior So that is a great question! Once the bike is in motion, and you are not applying any back break. It is okay to let the clutch out a little more quickly, because the back wheel is spinning, and this will not allow the bike to stall as easily. Like when first starting out riding the bike in the beginning! As you get better over time you will develop a habit of always having a finger on the clutch to be ready to use it at any point!!! I am glad you are so excited to get better on the bike! Be patient as all it take is time and you will be riding with ease! I am here if you have any more questions! Hello, I recently bought a Tbr7 250 and I am learning how to ride dirtbike. When you shift up, do you wait until you fully let go of the clutch do give it gas or do you do them simantaniusly. Also how fast do u let go of the clutch after shifting up.
Great question! So if your just starting on the bike you will let the clutch out with the gas simultaneously to get rolling into motion. Once in motion and your rear wheel is spending. The next shift up you will not have to let the clutch out with the gas simultaneously. Because the rear wheel is already spinning you can let the clutch out by itself, and then reapply throttle when needed. The first time you let out the clutch can be done slow or fast. Once you know where the bike begins to engage, slightly add the throttle to get rolling. Once your rolling and ready to shift again. You can pull the clutch in fast. Shift, and let the clutch out fast without the throttle on! I hope this helps! Feel free to ask any other questions you have! How long have you been riding?
There’s only 1 thing that confuses me When shifting up do you have to let out the clutch & apply throttle the same way you take of in first or can I just drop the clutch & twist/press the throttle straight away.
Great question! So since your rear wheel is already spinning, your bike will not stall out like when you are first starting. So you can let the clutch back out faster, and once the clutch is out re apply throttle!
@@RadAdventureDude cool thanks for the reply now I don’t gotta be scared I’ll blow the bike up every time I shift 😅 I was riding my uncles 450 quad & I was scared I’d brake it 😂 So just to be clear I can let the clutch out as quick as i want as long as I’m on the throttle straight after? 😅

as a Road motorcycle racer we use clutch only when shifting down and no clutch when shifting up.
I’m with you dude……clutch down and no clutch up.
Using the clutch when shifting up or down it is good to use the clutch, and let off the throttle every time we shift gears!

I’m having a bit of trouble with my foot position whilst changing gears. Have you got any tips to help me out?
Yes the best way to stand on your bike will be on the balls of your foot! However you won’t be able to change gears from this position. So you will have to move your foot up towards the gear shifter to shift. Once you shift you will want to move your foot back to where you were, standing on the balls of your feet!
This may feel awkward at first, but keep practicing and this will soon become very natural!

@@RadAdventureDude ok thanks!! I definitely will!

Thanks i was just wondering if you let the cluth out too quick or too slow what happens?
If you let your clutch out too fast, without the proper amount of throttle on you will stall the bike. Then you can’t really let the clutch out too slow! Hope this helps!

@@RadAdventureDude You are cool man! I got a 140cc Tao Motors dirtbike and I've been learning the clutch on it! This video really helped me
The biggest thing for me was getting it into that first gear without stalling and I've been working on not feathering the clutch as much and it's been going good!
@@RadAdventureDude I'm going through all the gears now. I couldn't thank you more
What gear should I be in most of the time ? Bc I was in first for a while and my bike got stock and couldn’t start it no more
You want to get in a gear where you still have acceleration but it is still a long enough gear so you do not get too high in the RPMs.
I also heard it’s better to stay in second or third then first because that’s why my bike got stuck , well at least that’s what the mechanic said

this is the best dirt bike vid I've seen
Hey man. Is there anyway to put a neutral indicator on dirt bikes. The gears are so confusing campare to cars
Hope this helps!
should rename this to how to shift like a PRO! great one again brother!!
thats a great idea Rajiv! Thank you for the advice!
What was it before?

I ride a 2stroke and I still down shift with out the clutch even though it barely does engine break
On two strokes the engine break will be much less than a torquey 4 stroke! I always try to suggest using the clutch when possible just to save your bikes transmission!
So if I can drive car with manual gear box so dirt bike will be not a big problem to start ride?
It is very similar! You just go from using your feet to operate the clutch, to using your hands!
Clutch is only used for setting off, stopping and corners shifting up an down without the clutch is fine that’s why they have straight cut gears
I always prefer to use the clutch when shifting just to help save my transmission on my bike! It’s not mandatory, but really saves the bike!
@@RadAdventureDude I just got my first bike about a month ago (2009 klx 140l) and haven’t been using clutch to shift down do you think my bike will be ok?
Yes as long as you are letting the throttle off before shifting down. However I would suggest you start shifting using your clutch!
Excellent video! When I go to stop do I pull the clutch and brake handle?
Thank you so much! Yes pull in the clutch when coming to a stop so you do not stall the bike, and use the brakes as needed to come to a complete stop!
Good content man I’m getting my dirtbike in 4 days this will definitely help 👍🏽

It’s always best to use the clutch when shifting to save your dirt bikes transmission!
Did this video help you?
WHat do u do when ur bike doesn't have the thing u kick down to shift gears
That’s a tough one, make sure your bike has gears, and isn’t an automatic. You could get by with no clutch lever. However the gear shifter is crucial to getting through the gears!
Replace the shifter, and you will be good to go!
@@RadAdventureDude k thx
Anytime! Thank you for watching!
@@RadAdventureDude ur welcome it helped
@@RadAdventureDude I saw a brand new 110cc dirt bike on eBay so imma get that
So do u always down shift when u slow down and what gear do u gotta down shift into
I like to use the gears to slow the bike down, so I will shift down one gear at a time when I am braking.
Please Subscribe so you do not miss out on any future how to videos, and all the crazy adventures I go on!
I have a few more videos on riding basics like where to sit on the bike, and body positioning if you would like to check those out!

th-cam.com/video/y8cf8KyqhfU/w-d-xo.html
It really will come down to riding, and practicing on your bike! Being able to listen to the motor of the dirt bike, and where the rpm level is in each gear.

You put a smile on my face because you made me so much more confident 😂
I felt like Mr. Beast made this video and I highly appreciated it. He spoke slow for me because he knew I needed it.

That’s awesome I’m always glad to help!
There’s only 1 thing that confuses me
When shifting up do you have to let out the clutch & apply throttle the same way you take of in first or can I just drop the clutch & twist/press the throttle straight away.
Great question! So since your rear wheel is already spinning, your bike will not stall out like when you are first starting. So you can let the clutch back out faster, and once the clutch is out re apply throttle!
@@RadAdventureDude cool thanks for the reply now I don’t gotta be scared I’ll blow the bike up every time I shift 😅 I was riding my uncles 450 quad & I was scared I’d brake it 😂
So just to be clear I can let the clutch out as quick as i want as long as I’m on the throttle straight after? 😅
Your welcome! I’m glad to help!
You can let the clutch out fast, as long as your rear wheels are already spinning!
