Please note that I am UK based and therefore use UK crochet terminology: a UK treble crochet is equivalent to a US double crochet.
This is a tutorial for mini solid granny squares including how to join them as you go (so no sewing together!). Perfect for using up mini skeins, scraps and yarn leftovers. I am using various 4ply hand dyed yarn leftovers and a 3.5mm hook.
Happy crocheting!

This is so beautiful it makes me happy. I am glad that I found this tutorial I first saw it in the shorts.
ditto. I saw the short and went looking for the tutorial. I have a bag of end yarn, Now I have a use for it! thanks.
@@asdf7290 That’s great. She does a great job of explaining how to do it.
Thank you for the idea on how to use the scraps of my scraps. Love that they are small..
THANK YOU! I can’t wait to use this method. I wish my mother had this method in her arsenal. She made so many beautiful afghans for us.
I have crocheted for years and have never tried this joining technique. Thank you for taking the time to create such an easy to follow tutorial. I am going to use this to make my little granddaughter (2yo) an afghan for her little baby doll.🥰
You’re welcome! I’m happy to have helped - hope your granddaughter loves her little dolls’ blanket ☺️
That’ll be sooo cute!
@@emmacmakes❤ this is sooooo beautiful
thank you for teaching us ❤
please please can you teach us this granny matching triangular 🙏 please
to use in a cardigan 🙏 please
I've done the same thing! I made my 3 granddaughters matching blankets for their American Girl dolls and the girls!
Really tiny, but really cute!!
I just love it, I find that the simple patterns are the ones I like the most.
Thank you very much for sharing
You’re very welcome! ☺️
Ich würde mich über eine Deutsche Version freuen.VielenDank.🎉
This joining technique is amazing! Can't wait to try it out
A friend here in USA 🇺🇸 send me this and I love this idea. I’m indeed more inclined to attach it so it won’t show that swirling side but that’s my ocd brain 😅But I truly love this idea of the very small granny square for a baby blanket!
I’m happy to hear you like it 🥰🥰
This would make a cool looking sweater. 🥰
Although I know how to do only the basics in crochet and am really an avid knitter, I was really interested in your tutorial for the tiny granny square blanket! I have quite a few leftover bits of sock yarn and have been thinking of the best way to utilize every scrap. A granny square blanket has crossed my mind more than once, but when I saw the mini-granny squares that are joined as you go, I was “hooked!” (Yes, pun very much intended!). Thanks for the tutorial. 🤗
You’re welcome! Love the pun 😄🥰
This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your techniques, I can’t wait to try it out. 😊 I hate to get rid of even the tiniest scrap of my treasured yarns; finally, after years of searching, I have found the perfect pattern. 🎉
Emma, a beautiful stitch for joining squares as you stitch round 2.
Love the Scrappy look of the yarn choices!!!
I am an avid sock knitter (and crochet blanket maker) and I have a HUGE sock-yarn-leftover-stash. I've tried mitred squares to use it up but it just doesn't sit with me, I cant get into any kind of rhythm with it so I've just been hoarding my scraps. NOT ONCE have I thought about crocheting with it! DUH!! Talk about a face-palm moment. My scraps are mostly dark colours but who cares, it'll keep us cosy on the sofa. I seem to handle UK and US crochet terms quite well, my brain just switches into US-mode or UK-mode as appropriate but it is nice to hear the UK terms for sure. Thanks for the inspiration, I am also "hooked" ;-)
Thank you! I’ve also tried knitting a mitred square blanket and couldn’t get into the rhythm of it either, which is a shame as I’ve seen some that look lovely! ☺️
This is so clear, thank you. I rarely do granny squares because I detest sewing them together. This is inspiring! I have a lot of knitting worsted leftovers that I will now be crocheting into a join-as-you-go granny square blanket to keep in the car. Brilliant.
You are so welcome! Happy to help 🥰
The blankets with this grannys are so cute for babys, even we should have it at home for winter watching a movie!!
Thank you, Emma. Very nice tutorial. I love how your project looks. I know this will sound crazy, but sometimes I forget that the easiest way to use up your leftovers is in projects like this. Take care and I look forward to seeing other crochet projects from your channel. 🌼
Thank you so much 🥰 Sometimes the simple projects are the best ones ☺️💕
I’m looking forward to making these mini squares ! Thank you for posting this tutorial ♥️👍
Love the video but would like to say what a pleasure to hear some one using UK terms when in the Uk this is most unusual, thank you 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you! I usually get told off for being confusing 😄
Australia too. It's a breath of fresh air!
Beautiful ❤it's very 😍 cute thank you for sharing ♥️
My pleasure 😊
I’m in the U.S. but I always thought the UK crochet terminology makes more sense 😂. That said it’s easy to convert from one to the other.
FINALLY someone using UK terminology!!!❤
Usually people are cross with me or tell me I’m doing it wrong 😄
I’m comfortable with both UK. and US terminology
Blossom crochet also uses UK terminology. It's very often the Americans who only refer to their own, most British content creators refer to both.
Thank you@@urshurakdieohnekanal9291 I will take a look. I have been knitting & crocheting for 64 + yrs but I like to view these for ideas & fun, but get tired of having to translate in my mind treble for double crochet etc.
By the time I've translated us terms I've missed the pattern.thank you for sharing ❤
Omg! I was wondering what I was going to do with all of my little balls of scarp yarn and this is totally it! I LOVE this so much!
Thanks for the video, and thanks so much for the translation between UK and English crochet terms! Im still kind of a beginner, maybe beginner intermediate, and just in the first 30 secs of the video, I learned something new. ❤❤❤
You are so welcome! I’m glad you like it and hope you have lots of fun using up all your yarn scraps ☺️
A friend has done this with knit mitered squares with sock yarn for her daughters for when they eventually fly away to college or whatever. Each year she has edged the prior year’s progress with a few rows of a solid color yarn that is rather dark and an easy to acquire color for matching over time. She has made them to be quite large now and they look great, like yours which reminded me of them. Her name is She Must Knit on here.
Your tutorial is so clear! Thank you so much. You make so, so, so much more sense than any of the others I have seen. Kudos! I have been so frustrated and this has been so helpful. 😊
I’m so happy to hear that! You’re very welcome! ☺️
Very pretty! And a great way to use up scraps. You could use this technique with thicker yarns also. I'm saving this to a playlist so I can try it sometime. It would make a beautiful scrappy sweater. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great idea! 🥰 And you’re very welcome!
That is a BRILLIANT technique! Your afghan is beautiful. Looking forward to seeing more of it. ❤
Thank you so much! 🥰
@emmacmakes I love your name! Emma has always been my favorite girls name, somuchso I named my first Emma Grace Abigail (tradition in our family to have two middle names). I LOVE your tutorials. You're one of my top two on my "subscribed to" list of, literally, hundreds of crocheters...lol. I still have a hard time with TH-cam referring to crocheting as knitting, or do I have that backwards and they say knitting as crocheting? 🤔 Hmmm... either way, crocheting and knitting are two very different crafts (to me, anyway).
These mini grannies are so adorable! Love how clearly you demonstrate you joining of them. It will be very much fun to make a blanket for my granddaughter’s dolly. Thank you!
You’re welcome! 🥰🥰
Are you using cotton yarn for your granny's? Mine never look loose and pretty like yours? Maybe my yarns too fuzzy?
HELP! LOL❤LOVE YOUR PRETTY SQUARES
@rashaunakovacich9921 I’m using 4 ply merino/nylon yarn to make them. What yarn are you using? If it’s acrylic they will look a bit less defined ☺️
Love these solid mini granny squares. 💜I make mine the same way and join them this way too. ❤
These are absolutely adorable!
I just started using this method of joining for a new scrap yarn blanket and love the technique! I actually think I will be using it to add my neutral coloured squares to my pre-made colourful squares in my Battenberg Blanket. Will have to join on all sides but worth the fiddling as this is the nicest joining technique in my opinion. So thank you! ☺
You’re very welcome! ☺️☺️
Thank you for this video. A great way to use up small balls in my stash. I would also like to have a go at making a Battenburg blanket. Thanks again for such clear instructions.
Wonderful tutorial! I’m going to have to try it!💗🧶Thank you for sharing!!
You’re welcome! 🥰
❤❤❤❤❤ the twist join!!! I am going to do this for a Temperature Blanket. THANKS and keep making videos 😊
I love how these little squares look. Thank you for such a precise and easy to follow tutorial ✌🏻💕🧶
You are so welcome!🥰
I also have crocheted for years and never seen the joining technique but looks easy enough. Thank you very much for showing us this.
You’re welcome! 🥰
Absolutely adorable!!
Adore it! Looks tricky but will definitely give this a go! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this join as you go technique! I LOVE this idea of small granny squares with left over yarn pieces! Will make a cute blanket for our great-granddaughter 's dolls! ❤
You are so welcome! 🥰
Great tutorial, Emma. I really like how you walked through each join. Can’t wait to see your blanket grow.
Thank you!! 🥰🥰
I've only been seriously crocheting in the past year. I've never been a fan of granny stitches -- until now. You've explained it so very well. I have some BonBon sampler yarn I didn't know what to do with -- until now. 🤩I've not used size 3 yarn yet so this little project will be perfect to add to my skill toolbox: smaller yarn and hook and new technique. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Enjoy! 🥰🥰
Absolutely adorable!
Thank you! ☺️
Thank you for sharing this great tutorial. Your explanation is clear and easy to understand. I’m in the middle of a move and all my crafting supplies are packed😢. I will be moving in a couple of weeks so I will be happy to resume my crocheting. I really don’t have any scraps but when the sock yarn goes on sale I will pick up a few to get started. I really love most granny squares and especially these minis ❤❤. Thanks again, Emma 🧶🌹💜gayle
You’re welcome! Hope the move goes well! ☺️
@@emmacmakes thank you. I’m hoping this will be my last move!! The older you get the harder it is lol.
Incredible ❤ What a clever and gorgeous way to use leftover scraps too.
Thanks so much! 😊

Hi, I love this pattern. I have started My blanket quite a few times😂. This last time I used all cascade heritage pastel solid colored yarn with a pop of red every now and again for a bit of a 50svibe. I am loving it! Thanks so much for doing this tutorial it’s awesome!🌸

Brilliant tutorial, thank you Emma, been looking for this for ages, some of the tutorials are soooo complicated, I'm a left hander, I need to think carefully and need to be able to follow as I'm watching, thank you :)
You’re very welcome! 🥰🥰
Just found you on a 'short' and have subscribed. Love the join as you go technique. I have recently fallen in love with granny squares. For years I've turned my nose up at them, but there are so many beautiful works of art being taught using this old fashioned motif, I can't help but join in the fun!
Thank you so much for subscribing! I never used to like granny squares that much either 🫢
Thank you so much for sharing! I can’t wait to start one. ❤
