Wow!!! What a great gift idea! I’m going to crochet the border a little longer so it will fold over onto the other side, cut the canvas straps off and add some faux leather purse straps that I’ve had forever! I don’t have a sewing machine so you just made my day!!
Nice! the only thing I'd suggest is perhaps sew some buttons on the upper edge of the bag and use the spaces in the upper crochet border to keep the cover from sagging with use.
I'm currently working on this bag (at the granny square stage 😅) and I planned to hand sew the liner into the granny square bag like you would do it if you made a liner yourself!
this is a great way to take some $1.25 bags, some scrap yarn and make items to sell at a spring craft fair. this has just been added to my list of things to make for my june show!
I think I'm going to try this but instead of looping around the handles I'm going to add some buttons around the top rim that can fit through the granny "spaces".
I was literally just thinking about how I could do this a few days ago. So glad that someone else was thinking the same and actually figured it out! Can’t wait to make one!
Really excited about this bag. Making Christmas gifts now and this is perfect. 😊 Also, I like the bubble in the corner of the video, feels much more personal 👍
What a wonderful idea. I picture a bag made with only yellow granny squares and brown flowers added to the centers to represent a sunflower. Great video!
It looks very nice. Because the bottom of my bags are Rectangle, I would add a sretch of leather with holes pre-punched; I wouldn't want the yarn to become damaged with the bag sitting upright. To help that happen, I would add the depth (1.5" or 2.5") wide up both edges of the design, to help the design to better fit around the squared bottom of the bag. As far as the handle, I might use my sewing machine for a basting (longer stitch) in your choice if color. The handles get a lot of wear! Another choice, may be to replace the handles with leather & Stitch them in place! I am sure there are more choices!!! The top border really adds to the colors!
Ooh, you’ve just given me a good idea! I have a thick piece of leather scrap I didn’t know what to do with. I’m going to use it as a base for the bag. 💕
I have just finished my crochet granny square bag with the canvas bag lining.I made mine with heart granny square and I am delighted with it.I would send a picture of it but dont know how to send it!! Thankyou for the tutorial. Love it.Eve Pengilley.
I am very late to the party! My mother had made my daughter an afghan when she was little, pastel granny squares. As an adult, the afghan has been stored in her basement in a tote. It was her idea to repurpose the afghan into a tote. In looking for a way to line it, your video was mentioned. Perfect! I had trouble finding a canvas tote bag large enough. I think I need to add the buttons around the top edge but my daughter is going to love it.
What an AWESOME idea! I have a stash of granny squares hanging around, waiting for me to join and add a liner. I love, love, love your bag. Thanks for the inspiration! ❤
Hi Brittany! This is such a great idea. I love that a needle and thread is not needed at all. Like you said, the possibilities are endless. I would love to try the crab stitch for that last round. I gotta get me some of these canvas bags. Thank You 😊
Great idea! I’d probably add a bottom to the bag to make it a little roomier, and I’d attach the top edge by either sewing it onto the canvas bag or attaching it with fabric glue.
What a great project. We will be losing plastic bags as an option at our grocery stores here in Virginia soon. I would love to make these to keep in my car for grocery trips. They would hold quite a bit and the canvas bags are sturdy. Plus, they are so cute with the granny squares, they'll look cute in my car. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful. I would like it to to be detachable from the liner so that the canvas can be washed in hot water and the crochet part can be hand washed and blocked.
I’m so glad you did this video for us! I remember you mentioning it before and thought it was genius. No sewing fiddly liners😬 I’ve got so many colour combos in my mind now😂💜🇬🇧
Thank you so much for this . I made one for my daughter and she loves it. I did poked holes all around the top of the bag and blanket stitched the crochet case to the bag as well as chaining around the handles 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️
Thanks a lot for the great inspiration. I just finished my granny tote made out of left over sock yarn. I added some reinforcement around the handles.❤
I love this idea. So much better and simpler than the traditional way of lining a bag. I would imagine that the canvas bag will hold up better without the bag stretching out so much with use. After seeing this, I checked your channel. So many great videos to watch. I think I've found a new crochet rabbit hole to explore. I subscribed right away.
Just watched the video of using a canvas bag and covering it with granny squares. This is genius! Love the idea and it looks so functional, too. I like the extra blue granny clusters at the top to finish out the length you needed. I was thinking you could also just shorten the canvas bag by sewing 2 to 3 inches above the hem, and then cut off the excess so it won’t stick out above the top granny squares. But as you said, the “right way” is the way that makes you happy. Well done video……thanks so much for the inspiration! ❤-Brenda
Would you not stich the top. To secure it with a blanket stich. That may stop it sliding down the tote. Love the idea. I have lots of free totes and dont like the pictures would be a great way to cover them up. Love your idea.❤
what a great project idea! My granddaughters want me to make them purses, but I couldn't figure out how to make it "kid proof." This will work! Thanks so much.
I absolutely hate these boring canvas bags that I seem to end up with, but omg, you had the solution all along and what a gorgeous solution. I can't wait to start! Thank you so much, just got yourself a new subscriber after binge watching a couple of your other videos. Brilliant. ❤
What a great idea 😁 I’ve made some retro flower squares and didn’t know what to use them for, I think they would look fab on a bag, thanks for the video 👏🏻
I want to make my first ever granny square bag and was wondering how people did them. If they used a liner or how it all worked and i came across this video. Now I'm really excited to start this project!! I'm planning on making sunflower granny squares. I hope it turns out as pretty as yours did!
Genius!!! Working from the outside in woo HOO! Thought of doing this with the plastic pieces the size of a placemat at the craft store, the ones we can needlepoint through. Thanks for the terrific and fun idea.
My opinion... I think you can keep the squares the same size going forward. Just add a couple of long rows of borders to join the "front to the back" panels. So... 3 squares, border border, 3 squares, border border. Now that you know you need a few rows added to the top, you can add half the amount to the bottom, or just keep it as the "cuff" that it looks like. Great job overall! I love that there's no sewing to "add a liner" or straps. KUDOS!
This is such a clever way to use granny squares. I love making motifs as a summer project while I’m bored to death at work 😂 and this is a great way to use them.
Such a great idea for a liner for a crochet bag; your bag turned out beautifully! Thank you for sharing! Would also love to see bags with hexagons and granny circles 🤩
I just subscribed… The canvas bags! You’re a genius!!!❤ I’m making a mess my own kind of granny square bags. Lining them is a pain; you just saved me so much time and probably money too . Thank you🎉
this is wonderful.. i am working on some granny squares now that i wanted to make into a bag "For Me" oh i hope you do something with clothing. I love your patterns, and your videos are a saving grace for me. I can actually make your things. LOL I have wanted to add crochet accents to clothing I already have like around the sleeves and neck of blouses , mostly T shirts. I feel so comfortable wearing a T-shirt but want it to be "Pretty" I thought adding a couple of rows of lacey crochet stitches would fix them up..I have to keep them Modest though.
I like that idea. I haven’t yet tried to add a border around sleeves or extend the length of a top, but I really want to do it. Hopefully Brittany will add this idea, she is a great teacher
Omg this is brilliant! I have so many bags for groceries or the beach that are so plain. This is such a great way to pretty them up. Thank you for sharing!
This is such a great idea!! Maybe using the join as you go method for the granny squares would make it a little bigger but this is great! Simple and would make a perfect gift! Thank you as always for sharing your content.
Hello, what a. Wonderful idea, I make bags but I always have to line them, & finish up with stretchey crochet handles. This is a super idea, cannot wait to get going on one.! Thank you so very much. Greetings from the UK.🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶
This is brilliant. Why not, the liner is there, all ready, and the straps are much more sturdy than a crocheted strap. Love this idea!!
Wow!!! What a great gift idea! I’m going to crochet the border a little longer so it will fold over onto the other side, cut the canvas straps off and add some faux leather purse straps that I’ve had forever! I don’t have a sewing machine so you just made my day!!
Oh that’s a great idea!!
Love this idea too! Ty for sharing
Nice! the only thing I'd suggest is perhaps sew some buttons on the upper edge of the bag and use the spaces in the upper crochet border to keep the cover from sagging with use.
😂 Perfect ❤ Idea 💡 🎉
What a good idea. Thanks
Good idea, because mine is very loose and is saging. So I glued it .not happy with it
I'm currently working on this bag (at the granny square stage 😅) and I planned to hand sew the liner into the granny square bag like you would do it if you made a liner yourself!
You're a genius!! I love crocheted bags but hate lining them. Thank you!!!!❤
Same here :)
this is a great way to take some $1.25 bags, some scrap yarn and make items to sell at a spring craft fair. this has just been added to my list of things to make for my june show!
That's a great idea!
how was it? 😊
I would do a button loop around straps so you could remove to wash separately. Very clever idea
Oooo, I like this idea
I think I'm going to try this but instead of looping around the handles I'm going to add some buttons around the top rim that can fit through the granny "spaces".
That’s a great idea! Then you’ll be able to switch them out if you make a few!
Exactly! Or wash the liner if it gets dirty! 😊
so you mean sew buttons onto the top edge of the bag then push the buttons thru the DC gaps to keep it in place ? yeah i 'll do that too then
Great idea!
Great idea! I'm making one too and I think I might use your idea! Thanks
Watching you crochet your projects may be boring to you 😊yet relaxing to me😊. Cool😎. It's a pretty bag😊.
That’s good to know, and helpful for me to find the right balance! 💙
Two one big granny would work. Very cute and great idea
I was literally just thinking about how I could do this a few days ago. So glad that someone else was thinking the same and actually figured it out! Can’t wait to make one!
So pretty! Thanks for sharing!
Really excited about this bag. Making Christmas gifts now and this is perfect. 😊
Also, I like the bubble in the corner of the video, feels much more personal 👍
Oh yeah, these would make great gifts! Glad you like the format too. That’s really helpful for me to know!
I am actually making a granny square bag right now, and you just changed it up in a good way! I'm so excited now!!!!
What a wonderful idea. I picture a bag made with only yellow granny squares and brown flowers added to the centers to represent a sunflower. Great video!
That would be so pretty! I’d love to see it if you make it!

Love it.Eve Pengilley.
This will also work with canvas pencil cases three squares on each side. I love a granny square x
Great idea!
I have been covering pencil/makeup cases with crochet granny squares for the last 2 years. So easy to do.
Me too.
Another Great idea. That’s a nice soft blue for the border! This has a place on my ‘To Do’ list. 😊
What a great idea. I bought alot of canvas bags to tie dye now I can use them to line a crocheted bag.
Hi Brittany! This is such a great idea. I love that a needle and thread is not needed at all. Like you said, the possibilities are endless. I would love to try the crab stitch for that last round. I gotta get me some of these canvas bags. Thank You 😊
The crab stitch will look great! Forgot how much I love that stitch for borders 💙
Absolutely love this project!❤
I’m going to try this with just one granny square I’ll keep crocheting until it firs. Thanks for idea.
Great idea! I’d probably add a bottom to the bag to make it a little roomier, and I’d attach the top edge by either sewing it onto the canvas bag or attaching it with fabric glue.
What a great idea! I love it and it turned out beautifully. Thanks for showing this to us!! ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
I’m going to try this. Thank you so much for sharing. Blessings. 🧶🤓
Love this project! Such a genius idea!!! Made 5 totes sold them all!!!!❤❤❤❤
Great idea! I'm making these to put gifts in for the grandchildren ( girls) so they have a little carry out. Thank you!

Very clever and pretty! I’m going to do this!💜💜💜💜💜
That slip stitch (top row) is brilliant! Cute bag!
Love the colors you used. Thanks for this great idea.
Beautiful. I would like it to to be detachable from the liner so that the canvas can be washed in hot water and the crochet part can be hand washed and blocked.
Good idea, but be careful washing the cotton canvas. They can shrink pretty bad and become misshapen.
Clever idea using the canvas bag as a liner!
I’m so glad you did this video for us! I remember you mentioning it before and thought it was genius. No sewing fiddly liners😬 I’ve got so many colour combos in my mind now😂💜🇬🇧
Yes!! Making a liner has always kept me from making all the crochet bags 😂
Why we never thought of this idea before, love it. I will be making this soon. Thanks ❤
That was my thought too! Can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner!
This is so cute! Nothing beats granny squares ❤
Thank you so much for this . I made one for my daughter and she loves it. I did poked holes all around the top of the bag and blanket stitched the crochet case to the bag as well as chaining around the handles 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️
Love this idea! People don't need to always buy a bag. There are so many reusuable shopping bags out there. I'm using those.
Oh my. What a GREAT idea!
I’ve just ordered some canvas bags to give this a go as I love it!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥰🥰🇬🇧🇬🇧
Great idea! I agree with others about a button loop for removing and washing. I'm going to try this with different granny square motifs. Thanks!
Thank you ❤. It looks great. I've been wanting a granny square bag for a while now. This might be it.❤
You are a breath of fresh air. Concise, informative great presentation.
Thanks a lot for the great inspiration. I just finished my granny tote made out of left over sock yarn. I added some reinforcement around the handles.❤
I got my bags yesterday, I will probably start putting my squares together tomorrow. Can't wait.
I love this idea. So much better and simpler than the traditional way of lining a bag. I would imagine that the canvas bag will hold up better without the bag stretching out so much with use.

Beautiful 🤩❤️❤️❤️, I have a canvas bag I use to haul ..very bland. It's spring 🌼🌱 time to bring life '24 into it.. thank you 👍🏾
Would you not stich the top. To secure it with a blanket stich. That may stop it sliding down the tote. Love the idea. I have lots of free totes and dont like the pictures would be a great way to cover them up. Love your idea.❤
I just learned so much about crochet problem-solving, your video style and cadence are perfect!
what a great project idea! My granddaughters want me to make them purses, but I couldn't figure out how to make it "kid proof." This will work! Thanks so much.
That is a genius idea!

This HIDUPZ tote is beautifully colored, very sturdy and the perfect size. Not too small, not too big.
I want to make my first ever granny square bag and was wondering how people did them. If they used a liner or how it all worked and i came across this video. Now I'm really excited to start this project!! I'm planning on making sunflower granny squares. I hope it turns out as pretty as yours did!
LOVE this bag❤ Thank you !

I made one in Christmas colors and it came out so good! Thanks for the tutorial!
Got my bags today. Can’t wait to try this. ❤
What a great idea to use a plain bag! I made 2 bags for my grand daughters and lined them with a pillow case but, your way is much better x
Oh a pillowcase is a really creative idea!
I just subscribed…
The canvas bags! You’re a genius!!!❤
I’m making a mess my own kind of granny square bags.
Lining them is a pain; you just saved me so much time and probably money too .
Thank you🎉
Grey idea! Is beautiful, and I would use it as a base for a pillow case 😁🥰
Girl! Yes🎉 love this! I always wanted to have one! Now I can make one! Plus gift them!! You Rock!!!!

This is adorable- I’ll be looking forward to seeing your popcorn flower granny pattern!
Just made one of these , I did sunburst granny squares and use a cotton acrylic blend yarn .. came out really cute
I love this. What a great use for all those freebie totes we get over time!
Omg this is brilliant! I have so many bags for groceries or the beach that are so plain. This is such a great way to pretty them up. Thank you for sharing!

I may or may not be working on a join as you go video already 😂 I had the same thought!
Hello, what a. Wonderful idea, I make bags but I always have to line them, & finish up with stretchey crochet handles. This is a super idea, cannot wait to get going on one.! Thank you so very much. Greetings from the UK.🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶
Really like your color choice; using the ready-made bag for the liner too!
I did this with an canvas bag I got from a former company I worked at. I liked the bag but didn’t want to admit I had worked there 🤣🧶🙌🏻
😂🤣😂🤣👍👍
Good idea!
Ideal!❤
Enron bag😂
Fantastic! I have a bag like that 😂😂
Thank you for the reminder
SO TRUE! I use the small pouches from hobby loby for my small crossbody bags. they work amazing!
Beautifully done
This is brilliant. I have been dreading making a lining for the bag I’m making now.
