    Just finished using Behr #64 on my 700 square foot deck today. I made the huge mistake of painting the deck with Behr latex deck paint five years ago. It was peeling after the first winter and became much worse over the next four years. After much trial & error, we rolled on the stripper when we had shade, waited ten minutes, dampened the stripper with a tank sprayer on mist, then after 30 minutes, applied the second roll-on coat of stripper. At 45 minutes, we dampened again with the tank sprayer. At one hour, we started my Simpson 3100 psi gas powered pressure washer and the paint rolled off in sheets. Strip the paint, come back to clean the knots and it turned out fantastic. Next is sanding with a 12x18 orbital rental sander, then seal with an oil base sealer. This was a good two week project.

      About to strip the same Behr latex (Cordova Brown) off of our deck. Put it down last year and it’s peeling badly everywhere despite a full prep (sanding, cleaning, full dry). Never doing latex stain again.

    Massive job. Very well done. Our deck isn’t as big, it has been neglected for many years. There was an orange colored stain on it. It was covered with moss, mold, etc. it’s been pressure washed and My next step is stripping the remaining coating that won’t come up with our pressure washer. Thank You for sharing this.

    I use this same product in my deck restoration business. Its $18 per galleon half the cost of similar products and it washes off the tray or roller. I also agree that you need to keep the application damp. I lightly wet the deck 30 minutes before application and then apply the stripper. It works fast and easily rinses off.

      @@jamescapone8592 Hello: I had a homeowner that painted over the stain so they had 2 coats of paint/sealer on top of 2 coats of stain/sealer. The Behr product easily dissolved most of the paint and stain with 1 coat with some some tint of stain left so I reapplied another light coat of Behr let sit for 20 minutes and everything came off. Your steps just may be a odd case. I've used all the strippers on the market and this product is the best on price and professional results. Best regards.

    I just tried Behr 7-26-22 stripper. on the deck is Behr stain that is brutal to remove using 2800 psi washer and this stripper. 10 hour job 4 gallons is stripper. Some stripper got on the sideboards, non Behr stain and took it right off. thus the stain you put down determines the effectiveness of the stripper. it won't work miricles for everyone.

  • @danielbaldwin2390

    Thanks for the video. it's interesting because the reviews for this product are either very positive, or extremely negative. I'm doing a test section of my deck now, so I guess we'll see if it's because the product is bad, or the other youtubers can't follow instructions. For me it's not a stain issue. I have paint splotches all over the deck from some rushed house painting. But also the previous owner never took care of the outside so it had considerable mold and mildew issues which I was able to mostly clean with a pressure washer. hoping the stripper will lighten some of the spots the pressure washer didn't work on. Going out ever 5-10 mins or so and just misting it with my hose since there appears to be an issue with it staining the deck white like it's covered in a calcium deposit. 30 mins to go, and we'll see how she cleans up.

  • @guymarquis6417
    @guymarquis6417 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I tried the exact same recipe but with no success. My original 7-year old stain was solid red from Behr so I thought that a Behr stripper would provide the best results to remove it. After 2 attempts (full cycle of applying the stripper, add a mist of water when it was about to dry out, wait 45 minutes, used a brush and finally the pressure washer) no could do. Less than 5% was removed. I simply don't understand why it didn't work for me the way it worked for you but I would certainly not give a 10 to this product. I went this way because of your video post that was looking promising. Now I need to search for a better product that can do the job in one pass.

    • @jamescapone8592
      @jamescapone8592  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Guy, the stain I removed was a semi Transparent.
      I said in the video that I tried the stripper on a solid stain from the steps and it did not work as well. I said would probably need 2 solids coats and a good scrubbing to come up, which you did and obviously it didn’t work.

    • @guymarquis6417
      @guymarquis6417 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Jim for reminding me of this subtlety (solid vs. semi-transparent). I had assumed this product would do the job on any type of Behr stain. The instructions don't say anything about a lower efficiency on solid colors. Sure thing, I will stay away from solid colors from now on. I chose solid at the time because according to the Behr brochure, it was supposed to last 10 years on decks and 20 on fences and siding. Divide these numbers by 3 to get the real numbers...
      If someone reading this knows a product that'll do the work for me, please let me know.

Applyed product...scrubbed with deck brush...hit with power washer...it started coming up. You could see the layers coming off. Scrub again and I mean really really scrub. Spray again. And again...Scrub...Spray. After 3 or 4 founds of that I did get off a good amount, but not all of it.

    Behr products are awful. I just applied stain to my deck, after taking my sweet time to make sure i had prepared to do more than appropriately. The end result is awful. Ridiculous. The stain is already pealing off in some spot. I have even applied a second coat, and it is already pealing. The rest of it, has a chalky appearance. If you rub it with your hand, it appears to get covered with a white powder, if it does not peal at the spot you rubbed. I had heard that it was junk. Now I know for sure. Not sure how to proceed and try to save the project. Neighbor told me to used something else but, without stripping this junk first, I doubt anything will have a happy ending. I will probably have to do it all over again next year, and I am getting old, and don't have anyone to help me. It is hard to do it in the first place. You make an effort, put your best foot forward, read the instruction, do it by the book, and the product sucks. Too bad!

    I went with this product on my deck and was surprised that it barely worked at all. My deck is 577 square feet and had three coats of paint. Even used as directed it barely cut through the first layer of paint. I had to use the pressure washer to remove what would come up which resulted in me having to sand anyways. Thinking that maybe it was because the paint was too old or thick, I used it on the balusters (which were only stained) and had the same result. Disappointed in this product. Maybe others will have a better result. Keep in mind my house/deck is 27 years old.

      Hi Chris, a lot of the stripper and stain went down in between the boards but there was a good amount that went over the side. I would suggest just covering the walkway the best that you can and power wash as you go. I had to go outside my deck after each section I did to power wash the siding. Most of it came off the wood so I would think it wouldn’t hurt the walkway as long as you didn’t let it sit too long.

      Hi Mego, the stain was water based but I used it last week on another section of decking that I’m working on . I had some overlap from a Cabots oil based stain and it took it up quite nicely.

      Hi adibees
      I did not wet the deck before applying.
      Apply product liberally and do not let the surface dry.
      I used the mister setting on the hose to keep area wet.
      I would lightly reapply product after misting.

The original stain looks very solid, yet I think in the video you say you used transparent or semi-transparent. How is it holding up since the "fix".

      Hi Mike,
      The stripper ran off side of the deck and settled on the area of the lawn where I weed whack close to bottom edge so no real harm to grass. I did however cover some plants I have around our pool to protect them. Also got some spray on a cherry blossom branch and killed some leaves. Protect what you can.

      Hi David, sorry for the late reply
      The stain I took off was Olympic Elite Semi Transparent Semi Solid.
      The pressure washer I used was 1650psi.
      I made sure not to pressure wash to close to avoid damaging the pressure treated pine.

    10 STARS or $200 worth of the junk stripper ? I stick to the stripper in spray for bikes, if it peels oil paint and primer from a pipe it will do better on a wood piece, try it, cheaper too.

    Wish I could say I had good results with this stripper but, I cannot. This was the second stripper I tried on my two-tier deck. It was the worst of the two. Perhaps, it depends on the stain that is to be removed. Mine was Sikkens and the results were pitiful. Looks like I will be sanding the entire deck. It was a waste of time and money.
