    I just saw a bunch of videos where Beher deck over starts to peel and crack after one year if you live in the Northeast! I just bought three cans and I'm bringing them back first thing in the morning!

    I have a solid stain on my current deck. The deck is in very good shape. Do I need to strip the deck before applying ?

    I'm wondering if a lot of the negative reviews/experiences are associated with the "non-Advanced" deckover. Do you have any experience or data that might support this?

  • @georgemcfly1205

    I'm really wanting to try this but have read a lot of bad reviews. I'm guessing that is from poor prep work. Is primer recommend? I'm thinking about putting Keelz2 on it first. Any input?

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey McFly, I wouldn't use a primer with the Behr DeckOver on new wood. Wash and clean the surface, wait 24 hours after washing the deck. Apply two coats of DeckOver allowing 24 between coats.

    I used the deck over on my pool deck and it is horrible. I followed all the directions and it still peeled off and cracked. I use all the behr products and I am pleased with them all except this one.

    I have a similar product and after 2 years it is cracking in multiple areas. Do I have to dig or scrape out the cracked areas to allow the wood to dry out and prime and repaint? Sand? The manufacturer told me to blast the cracks with a power washer to peel off the areas but that sounds counterproductive. I was hoping this product would be more flexible and not prone to cracking, but alas it is not an elastomeric coating.

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair, the big risk with solid solid stains and deck paints is that it can trap moisture in. Even if wood is dry to the touch, that doesn't mean there isn't moisture still trapped underneath. Your intuition is correct about the powerwashing. It sounds like a good idea, but it'll end up pushing water deep into the wood. The only way you'd be able to do it is to keep it at a lower psi and let it dry as long as possible (72 hours minimum, longer if possible). Check your product's website, as there should be application/maintenance instructions that could help you. If the product you're using is similar to DeckOver Advanced, then you would just wait for a dry spell, make sure the surrounding area is clean and apply a liberal recoat over the cracks. It's best to regularly check for the early signs of cracking and reseal them before they gets larger and compromises the coating. If the cracks are very big, you may have to replace the wood board entirely, but hopefully it hasn't gotten to that point! Hope this helps!

    • @Thestainxpert
      @Thestainxpert 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chemically Stripping it or sanding it off is the first step…. Then restoring it with A “Brightener” … let dry to 12% moisture… then applying a “penetrating oil based stain” from SSE

    • @TSecor
      @TSecor ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thestainxpert what is the best chemical to strip paint off my front porch? I want to go down to the raw wood and then use an oil base stain.

  • @PetalumaHandyman

    I just use a semi-transparent on a deck that was sanded smooth. I do not like the finish and the color. I'm wondering if I need to do any prep work to paint over it with this product? It's been cured for about a week

    • @Thestainxpert
      @Thestainxpert 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to chemically strip it and use a “penetrating oil based stain”. Anything water based or oil modified will fail over time… go with a penetrating oil & never worry

  • @Songwriter376

    This is all BS. I unfortunately used deck over 3 years ago AS RECOMMENDED and now I need to throw out all planks due to rot and go with Trex. Wood, even when cut in planks still contracts and expands with temp and humidity. We need another class action suit against Behr like in 2018.

    • @thepaintpeople
      @thepaintpeople  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you use the reformulated Advanced Deck Over?

    • @Songwriter376
      @Songwriter376 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thepaintpeople Was not out at the time. It is crazy to have to go under a deck and paint the bottoms and can’t properly paint the sides to make a complete seal unless each plank is removed to do so. I’d rather go with Trex and be done with it. Thanks for your response anyhow.

      @@thepaintpeople deck over or ultra advance or whatever is a failure ! Paint is not meant for decks even much less a thick paint such deck over.

We live in the Northeast it's been just about a year We followed all of the prep instructions to a t and this stuff is peeling everywhere We have a two-level deck we spent hours prepping and applying this product hours of labor hundreds of dollars spent and after 1 year it looks like absolute crap highly disappointed!

    Hi, I live on the coast in a home that is on pilings. My porch is looking really sad and I was looking at using Behr Deckover, but I am discouraged knowing that I would have to apply to all areas of the planks. Seeing that it would be impossible to cover the whole plank. Do you all recommend a different stain or sealer? I also have steps and a deck around a pool that I would also need to redo so a product that is slip resistant is necessary. Thank you! :)

    • @thepaintpeople

    • @taschawright77
      @taschawright77 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thepaintpeople I would like a solid stain. Currently the stain that is on there has worn off in high traffic spots to the point where I can see bare wood. Do you have an email address? I could send you pictures if that would help. I have other questions for you as well. I appreciate your time and help. :)
