thanks for this video. so sad we have to resort to this b/c of picking a terrible product. every single surface i used Deck Over on is ruined . a deck that was lovely than i installed 15 years ago, the wood is just deteriorated from this product. sadly, my surface area is just too large for me (current health issues) to repair. it will end up costing me a lot of $$$$$ to have a company come in and do this but i cannot in my current situation.
I was just getting lumber from my local home depot and mentioned what I went through with this product. Before I finished my sentence the rep said "STAY AWAY FROM THAT CRAP! IT'LL RUIN YOUR DECK!!!!!" Terrible
Glad you could salvage most of your deck. You caught it early. I plan to rent a hardwood floor sander to get most of mine stripped off (650 square foot of deck surface). Fingers crossed it will work to remove that stuff. Then I have to assess what can be saved versus what has to be replaced. What a nightmare. In talking to a few folks, the problem with Deck Over is the product dries hard. This does not allow for expansion, this causing cracks in the Deck Over. With time water penetrates the Deck Over cracks and the wood absorbs it like a sponge. Then it decays much like a tooth cavity. Simple stain cover doesn't form a complete shell incasing the wood like Deck Over so the wood stands a better chance to breath. There is another product called Tuff Coat that is a rubberized polyurethane coating. Same principle as Deck Over, but it never dries hard and stays pliable for expansion and contracting. I used it on my boat floor and it was awesome. But, I will have to test it on wood before I get myself into another mess....

I’m almost at the end of the same project. I spent two weeks before and after work (since I’m working from home for now) scrapping, chipping and peeling. Sometimes I used an electric planer to cut thru the hard stuff but after a couple passes here and there the planer would get hot and just smear it. I found it a little easier to peel up just after a rain and spent all my spare time (sometimes even in the rain) on this project. I just finished replacing the rotten boards, staircase and sanding what I can salvage (although I should replace them but this has taken to long already). My deck has looked ratty for a while now, the deck over in some spots just flapped in the wind while the other half of the deck seemed like it was melted on.
You're very right! There were times I'd have a stubborn part of the wood where I couldn't get paint up. I'd stop for the night and come back a day or so later - perhaps it rained during that time - and BEHOLD! it all started to come off again. Very good point!
Dealt with this problem on my home this summer. It wasn't deck over but a very similar product. Tried chipping the paint off to refinish but decided to just replace all the top boards. Cost benefit seemed to favor spending $900 for all new lumber vs $200-$300 to refinish the old wood.
We had the same exact issue with our deck! My dad is a contractor, we did everything right when applying. The first winter, it was peeling off like sheets of paper and blowing away in the wind. Wr had the same experience where it stuck to the railing, but peeled off the top. I wish I would have seen your video, I just found it after 3 coats of paint stripper, still not coming off. So frustrated! Boards were beautiful before deckover, and we had to replace 8 20ft 2x6 boards.
Terrible! I hate reading comments like this. And I speak from experience. It's heartbreaking to tear up a once perfectly healthy deck to repair what this product destroyed.
I am in the process of getting rid of the Deckover - it is the absolute pits! I found that if I wait a bit for the sun to heat the deck up I can scrape (with a putty knife) up sheets of the stuff. Also, in the really, really hard places I've used a heat gun with some success - but I don't use that often cause it's a pain. Also, I found that if you scrape and then put some water on it to get under the Deckover it can scrape up a bit easier. This is an all summer project...punishment for anything bad I've ever done and could possibly do in the future...
Is it just better to avoid Behr Deck paints all together? Like your vid and others with bad behr paint experience, I just used Canadian Tires Extra Premier Semi-Transparent deck paint because of I had lower temps just above 5*C at night and it seemed okay in reviews but not alot of individual deck reviews. I guess only time will tell

I used deckover 5 years ago and now have been on my hands and knees for the last couple of months trying to remove this GARBAGE. I tried several paint strippers, nothing worked. Finally I just took a kitchen knife and started lifting and peeling the paint in full sun or just after it rained - both the sun and the rain helped soften the paint and it seemed to come off easier. Then I purchased an orbital sander to take off the rest. It's been an absolute nightmare getting back to the natural wood surface. Some boards were rotted out because of trapped moisture. I definitely learned my lesson, and wouldn't recommend this product to my worst enemy. It will destroy your deck... And either cost you a ton of money to replace OR you're going to have to put in an unwarranted amount of sweat equity in to clean it off yourself. Long story short, I know your pain!! LOL 😂

We had a few guys use this on our 20x40 deck and it’s now completely destroyed. We have been saving up to replace it and have watched it slowly deteriorate. My husband is a quadriplegic and cannot even roll on the deck as it’s not safe. Behr should be held responsible for selling this product!
I notice you did not prime the wood. I never do either, but I wonder if I'm making a mistake. It just seems to me I shouldn't have to dramatically increase my cost and time invested to use a primer. Surely, the finishing product can be made sticky enough to adhere to the wood if primer can adhere to the wood. Just seems like a racket to me. How did your new stain and paint hold up in the two years since you made the video?

The same thing is going to happen unfortunately. As soon as that paint gets any cracks moisture will get in and never evaporate. Please take it from me, use a semi transparent stain.
Thanks for the video. My question is... on the places that you could not get up (the deck-over remnants) did you put the brown stain on top of that? How did a oil-based stain stick to the acrylic-based deck-over remnants? I have a huge deck and there is right much that I cannot get off so I am curious how it will do with paint or stain on top of it. Thanks in advance.
so for the floor itself I sanded everything down. However, for the spindles and the railing I ended up painting right over what was there and had zero issues whatsoever.
How many coats? Just 1 coat of the Porch & Patio Floor Paint and then go over with 1 coat of the Stain + Sealer? I have a deck that's been seasoning a few years and ready for treatment now, but thankfully a bunch of TH-cam horror story vids like yours are saving me from ruining it.
For good measure I did 2 coats which looked great for about 2 years. Then it needed touchups which were expected. I just redid it all again and it looks wonderful. I simply cleaned the deck as directed and stained again. Didn't need to scrape or anything.
@@tonyaallegrezza8314 very well. 2 years after I laid it down I had some scuffs and scrapes that needed to be touched up. I power washed everything and put a new coat down. Still looks new!!
@@karltang9590 I scraped and sanded down as much as I possibly could. I wanted as much of that product off my deck as possible so the new paint has something proper to bond to.

For the white paint, we just painted right over the spindles and running boards. No issues there. needed 2 coats though. Been almost a year now, still holding strong!

I'm happy to say that it has aged very well. Nothing at all like how the deckover project aged. It's still bonded / stained to the wood and looks great. I'd be happy to provide a follow up video as soon as I can.
Deck looks great, thanks for sending me the link. I made the mistake of doing the spindles and railings all with the deck over. Same deal, it stuck great on them. Did you sand down all the spindles? That’s the one thing I’m not looking forward to.
It's interesting to me that the deck over stuck like glue on your ballasters and it's coming off on the top of the handrail. So my question is did you apply the deck over on a Sunny day and was it warm?
@@snakeclaw Yes, that is correct. The only parts that needed touch up would be where the chairs scratched the floors. But nothing pulled or peeled like with the last finish.
Has anyone used a stripper to get ride of their deckover. If so, what type would you recommend? I'm in the beginning stages of a similar project, big deck, I need to get this deckover crap off before it destroys any more boards. Ran a ig, rented, belt sander on it this weekend, 36 grit paper, minimal results.
Holding up VERY VERY VERY well. I'm happy to report this. The only thing I'm seeing are parts where I used deck filler are peeling a bit. I think I'm going to pick that all out and refill / sand / paint again. Just in a few spots though. Over all the desk still looks great.
Thank you! Behr calls this color Chocolate. It held up quite well too! I was just looking at the deck last night. The snow has all melted. After a good hosing down or light powerwash, it should look new again.
Currently redoing my parents deck and it’s been a nightmare trying to strip the deck over that was done 2 years ago. I even used the Behr wood stain stripper + a power washer and it’s just not coming out. I’ve been at it for 3 days now. May have to result to a scrapper and/or electric sander/buffer. Any tips on how to strip it faster?
Honestly, you're never going to get 100% off. Not without taking the wood down with a sander. I got 95% of it off and retained with a fully non transparent stain. It covered any parts that had left over deck over.
My man...you used a Behr product that caused you heartache and then you covered your hard work with MORE BEHR SOLID STAIN FROM HOME DEPOT? Never paint your deck. Good luck stripping that Behr solid in 2 years when it cracks. I do deck restoration professionally and I can tell you with 100% certainty that you'll be in the same boat in 2-3 years. If you 100% need to solid PPG PROLUXE or FLOOD is the best out there. Everything else should be stained with oil based stain. Good luck brother.
My deck over deck is in bad shape too, anyone have experience using a power washer to effectively remove deck over paint? I will try that first then move on to the tedious method of sanding and scraping. 😭😭😭
Sorry to say, power washing wasn't very effective for me. It got the loose bits up but the stuff that bonded to the wood really needed to be scraped and sanded
Naa, i was told there was some type of class action suite at one point. Didn't bother. Not sure how true it is but a rep at Home Depot said "good luck, unless you had this professionally done, Behr won't pay any mind to you". Sounds about right.
I applied deckover back in the summer of 2017. Within 1.5-2 years, faced the same issue as everyone with it peeling in multiple places. Last week I called Behr customer support about this failing product They first said they were going to send me for free a new and improved version of deckover product. I said uh no. I asked for compensation for this failed product ( I still had my digital Home Depot receipt in my gmail, I don't delete anything). The rep didn't balk. They are reimbursing for the two 5 gallons buckets, $316! Plus they are reimbursing me for 2 day rentals of sander plus up to $50 in sanding pads. May go the route of diamabrush vs. orbital sander. Not sure yet. I did start stripping using a power washer which removed some but there are stubborn spots that is going to require sanding.

We have a massive deck with deck over, and it's painful! Home Depot went thru a lawsuit in 2018 and lost. Wonder if we can follow up with this??

You can strip much easier with a Diamabrush for Wood, Decks, and Siding from a Lowes hardware.

The new stain held up great!!! I didn't use a primer only because the directions never said to. I agree with you on the importance of using one.

Thanks. I did not sand them down actually. Like you said, the product stuck like glue on them so I felt it was no hard to leave it on there.
Was the white porch and floor straight out of the can or a color added? Did it cover good?
White was straight from the can and brown was tinted at Home Depot.

im still working on it ...I can't decided what kind paint to use this time ,
I had great luck with what I have shown in this video. Still holding up well. I just put a 2nd coat down this year to touch up scuffs and scrapes.
Is the new paint slippery when wet?
I wouldn't say its slippery. Definitely doesn't have the grip that the Deckover had though.

How did you strip paint on banisters ?
I didn't. For some reason they never blistered or held water so I just roughed them up a bit with a sander and painted right over them

My deck over deck is in bad shape too, anyone have experience using a power washer to effectively remove deck over paint? I will try that first then move on to the tedious method of sanding and scraping. 😭😭😭
Sorry to say, power washing wasn't very effective for me. It got the loose bits up but the stuff that bonded to the wood really needed to be scraped and sanded

I believe Behr calls it Chocolate. It's a nice color that ages well.

Naa, i was told there was some type of class action suite at one point. Didn't bother. Not sure how true it is but a rep at Home Depot said "good luck, unless you had this professionally done, Behr won't pay any mind to you". Sounds about right.
Yes there is a class action suit from 2018, still waiting to get reimbursed.
I applied deckover back in the summer of 2017. Within 1.5-2 years, faced the same issue as everyone with it peeling in multiple places. Last week I called Behr customer support about this failing product They first said they were going to send me for free a new and improved version of deckover product. I said uh no. I asked for compensation for this failed product ( I still had my digital Home Depot receipt in my gmail, I don't delete anything). The rep didn't balk. They are reimbursing for the two 5 gallons buckets, $316! Plus they are reimbursing me for 2 day rentals of sander plus up to $50 in sanding pads. May go the route of diamabrush vs. orbital sander. Not sure yet. I did start stripping using a power washer which removed some but there are stubborn spots that is going to require sanding.
Splendidly to see woodglut have new plans which helped me save some money and energy for this construction.
