    In Canada get a NP231 Rebuild Kit here amzn.to/31bFbrl
    This is a case study of a NP231 Transfer Case Whine, I little background is that I mixed a NP231 Jeep and a Np231 chevy to make a transfer case for my Ls swap Jeep tj. While this had worked good for awhile it is now making a whining noise while i'm driving. Now that i've seen this video since the first time editing it I can see the easter egg that I missed all along.

    Almost looks like a weird "wavy" wear pattern on the gears too.

    My front output bearing on my np 231 is definitely spinning (chirping noise that goes at speed of front driveshaft; pin pointed it with stethoscope and I saw some spin marks on bearing after I removed it) but it seemed tight when removing. How do you apply Permatex sleeve retainer without getting it inside the bearing? I really don’t want to buy a new front half and getting one from the junk yard is a crap shoot. Great vids, thanks!

    how does it sound when you have transfer case in 4 wd and twist frony out-put yoke back and forth as far as how noisey it sounds? The reason i ask is because im doing clutch and SYE and wanting to know what is normal sounding? I know you have alot more experienc than i do and trying to do preventive maint. Chain isnt slapping but im sure its worn but thought you could help,Sincerely a big thank you.Pls. Help.Great videos,keep em coming

    oh man i thought you put those extra gears in well i just saw video day or 2 ago but was first thing i thouight of, but they will probably wear in and hope is ok or do what you feel is right.I thought if any were new or old compared to others it would show metal.my friend switched pinion with different ring gear in rear of jeep.i told him i wouldnt but he did and got alot of metal but it hasnt broken yet.Hope your ok.Man you can go through that thing cant you.please tell me if i should have smooth sound when twisting 1/4 turns from front yoke to rear.mine sounds clunky.its out and on table with no fluid but i just dont like that clunky sound.have had no problems just clutch replacement but now would be time to know more abouy these transfer cases/231-j

    A question regarding shifting a 231. I have an auto(32RH) in my 99, I have installed a cable shifter and went through the T case when I did the SYE, everything was in excellent condition. The case shifts great from 2H to 4H and will go into N easy. When I try to shift it back to 4H it grinds, the case is still spinning away unless the trans is in park (yes neutral too) The problem is twofold, in order to get the trans into park if the case is in N, I have to shut the engine off to get the trans in park without grinding the parking pawl. Once in park, the case gears do not want to mesh up and shift from N to 4H or 4L. I have to push on the T-case lever and just barely pull the trans out of park IE making it slightly spin and VIOLA it shifts no noise and off I go. Any suggestions?

      I would try to adjust the transfer case linkage

    • @tomhubbard353
      @tomhubbard353 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tomtheman91 I did adjust the cable linkage but I also did some research and found the recommendation of slightly rolling to shift from 4H to 4LO and do the shift in one swift clean movement. It actually works quite well. If I am unable to be on the move I just adjust and figure it out. At least until I figure out something definitive showing me otherwise.

    didnt you add new and more planetary gears in that thing in other video? just wondering if those other gears are wearing in? All aluminium is gonna chip off from wear, so i hope your ok.

    My T-case started screaming in 4 wheel drive. I bolted on a used one and didn’t even dissect the T-carcass let alone think it could be fixed, cool to see the guts. Hope it worked.

    Maybe its the camera, but that doesn't even look like ATF ... looks like chocolate milk. If it was diff oil, then it looks cloudy, can't see sparkles but definitely cloudy ...

  • @jordanodom4439

    There’s a gear break in 1994 where they began cutting the gears differently, you aren’t supposed to mix pre 94 gears with post 94 gears. Perhaps that is what happened

    i agree with the planetary issue, i noticed it looks like you used gear lube perhaps 75w90, i thought those transfercases required atf. Thicker gear lube might not flow easily enough for the oil pump to work properly.

      @@jalton9416 I will give you the opportunity to explain why........ then i'll let you think about why 6010 bearings can use grease, engine oil, ATF, Hydraulic fluid.....etc

    • @jalton9416
      @jalton9416 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it's common for the Jeep crowd run 5w30 in their transfer cases. I just prefer to use what the manufacturer suggests for their components. My Chevy truck has an NV3500 transmission. It requires ACDelco Synchromesh 10-4006. Many people have issues with the less expensive Synchromesh fluids made by Pennzoil and Royal Purple. Not everybody, some people have issues with the shifts. I'm guessing like everyone else. I'm sure you'll get the issue resolved.
      I had an issue with the O ring on my transfer cases pick up tube. Maybe it's not lubricating properly.

    • @tomhubbard353
      @tomhubbard353 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard people run all kinds of oils in their 231s and honestly none have sworn to never use 'IT" again LOL. I run ATF with a blend of STP oil treatment. The STP has high quantities of zinc which is a great lube. It is sticky a hell and stays on parts. I go anbout 1/4 qt per qt of ATF to keep it thin enough for the pump. The pump is what I understand is the issue with thicker oils, it can't pump them very well. I have ran it in 3 different 231s so far.

    What's with the weird scratches on the oil pump? I feel like something is missing. What's the slip yoke look like and the shift forkI believe they have a synchro deal on them, also the driveshaft should have a centering ball on it like my dodge ram! Could also be driveshaft angle and depth

  • @Lonewlf7676

    Looks to have chatter marks on the planetary gears. Perhaps also run a synchro-mesh MTF instead of motor oil. I am running some royal purple synchromax in mine because I bought a case and it is "no bueno" for my NV3550. Works fine in the 231.

    Tomcat looked like he was giving you that, I'm cool like Steve McQueen look. If you were hearing whining sounds, it must have come from the gears due to miss-matched gears like you say. It also looked like you were panning for gold with those colors in the oil pan!

    There was a change in planet and sun gear design around 1995. I believe the later planets are more sharply pointed. Either way, the two designs can't be mixed and matched.
