Best basing tip ever! I can't believe that I've passed up basing so many miniatures, when this simple flag stone method is an option. I'm forever grateful!
If you want a slight variation, use cork board instead of card and rip it instead of cut it. A quick spray in primer and a quick dry brush of a base and then highlight color and viola! I get asked with stunning regularity where I bought my bases and/or are they 3D printed and people are shocked that theyre just cork and paint.
If you can get hold of thin craft foam, you can use it instead of card. That way, you can roll a ball of kitchen foil or a rock over the foam before cutting it in to tiles. This can give you a rough texture on the tiles.
@@MidwinterMinis I can tell you enjoyed it haha. This is perfect timing also, I just built a screaming bell and saw the Sigmar Lied teaser trailer earlier today. Can't wait for more ratbois!
I dont paint anymore, but coming back here after ages to watch this video, it feels so good to exist in a world that does not require anything from me for a few minutes. It's really a holiday, just chill and watch some guy paint minis, thanks
Wonderful video, I use vallejo beige red for my rat skin. Another couple cheats are using the brown primer washed with agrax for the fur on my clanrats, which saves tones of time, and also using a nice muddy base scheme (vallejo russian mud) so you dont have to spend too much time on the legs/feet of your rats. Would love to see more Skaven content in the future!
Woah. TH-cam’s tariffs for content creators are shamefully low. 😢 Love your painting tutorials, Guy. They were instrumental in getting me started. It’d be a tremendous pity to lose them.
Love the results on it for such low effort and how the green/ magic S symbol looks. Seeing as MWM discovered Streaking Grime, imagine if he starts doing Oil Wash tutorials 😍😍
Great tutorial! Can’t wait for the range refresh so I can continue my Skaven army, yes-yes! Just a life-saving tip for anyone cautious that the streaking grime or spirits may reactivate or remove your paint: gloss varnish your mini before you cover it in grime!
Hi Guy, You could try Monument Hobbies Newsh. Acrylic based, mix with your normal acrylic paint to colour it. Paint stays workable for approx 20 minutes, fully dry in about an hour, depending on the ratio you use. You get a similar effect to Streaking Grime but without the need for special cleaners, toxic fumes or having to leave it for 24 hours. I love using it, Artis Opus did a great review of it recently.
I do a mix of Khorne red and increasing amounts of wraithbone from GW to get pink skin. I think it was Byron on Artis Opus channel that drybrushed a Mega Gargant using those two that made me use it. Khorne red covers well and then just apply the blend on top! :)
Colour Forge has some amazing products, their Standard Grey is the only spray that actually matches Citadel's Mechanicus Standard Grey; I'll definitely be using your link when I need to restock
Loved the Skaven voice! Pale Flesh from Vallejo's Malefic Flesh set is my go to for ratty tails and pale squigs. The rest of the set is really nice too.
@@MidwinterMinisby my reckoning, the last "Here are some Warhammer units, here's how to paint them" video you did was 6 months ago (with the Salamanders)
Great ratties, man-Guy! If you get fed up with the cotton whisps I found the little eyeshadow sponges are pretty cheap for a pack of many and with a little wash-squeeze out in spirits after can be re-used a couple of times
As for pink-like skin a friend of mine uses a formula: 5 drops of flesh pink, 3 drops of off-white and 1 drop od rich red and one drop of water. It looks great on his minis.
Been experimenting with Skaven recently. To get a really good ratty pink(especially on the tails). Start with a deep magenta/purple contrast paint(like warlord purple), then coat the unrecessed areas with brown-rose mixed with 1/4 bit pink. Then finally bright pink mixed with light grey as a highlight.
Skaven are so fun. Also, I anxiously wait the day of the great spraying. The day colour forge delivers to the US. I need a good salamanders green primer.
Recently, I painted a skaven battleforce of 88 minis. This is pretty close to the paint scheme I used for the infantry, except I used homemade dip wash, and it was even faster! When you're painting 40 clanrats and 40 plague monks, speedpainting is the only option.
@MidwinterMinis Thanks Guy! After years of being drawn to the little ratmen, I've finally decided to pick some up and jump in to AOS, so the timing here is perfect. (and yes, I'm aware they're getting a glow-up with AOS 4) Side note: I just learned about Pro Acrylic NEWSH and would love to see another video in this style using that instead of the oils as a comparison.
Golden Dawn? Hey thanks I I've got the same box, unpainted. A few of the Rats I converted for a Necromunda gang. I'd love to see you vamp up some Skaven to Space Rat Warriors!
For me, I was never been able to find good out of bottle colour for flesh, so ending up mixing any light purple with Vallejo skin tone. Then basically adding a bit more skin tone to the mix for highlights
I'm sure someone's mentioned it already but there is a citadel paint called Ratskin flesh! its a base colour and quite warm, almost orange so your supposed to layer on lighter skin tones
I got really interested in space skaven (or Veer-myn, as they're called) when I saw the Deadzone starter set recently. The faction is even playable with One Page Rules, so my buddies could still play with their 40k armies against them. But the current hobby to-do list is long enough as it is...
I had over 15k points of em in the old old world (b4 AoS) but now alas i have nothing. Anyhoo a trick i used on all mine was black noses and dwarf flesh tails. Nice work..
for the bright pinkish hues i actually like Army painter Warpaint "Mutant Hide" and a bit of "Mummy Robes" to brighten it. I dont like to use my old Army Painter colours often but these two are always on my palette :D
This is the exact opposite of how I painted my (very few) plaguemonks.... I decided to slow paint them, one at a time, doing my best with every single one..... I did it as sort of a learning experience, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." kind of thing.
Tip to avoid rogue hairs from q-tips: use makeup applicator sponges instead! Sometimes called "eyeshadow applicators," they're the same sort of stick-with-bud shape but are little foam sponges instead of wisps of cotton. Just one more brilliant minis tool from the world of cosmetics.
Great video, nice to know how to get the best out of my AK streak and grime, oh Guy basic skin tone with a little red gives a good rat skin, plus orderless white spirit is my go too instead of the smelly type.
