Scenes taking place inside the 2,204,622.62 pound floating atoll set could be filmed just off the coast, but for scenes taking place on open water, it took hours to bring the set and ships at least 2 miles off the coast to get a view that offered 270 degrees of open water. Turning the set or the trimaran so that the camera wouldn't pick up land was also very time-consuming. There was limited space on the sets for cameras and their operators to move, and they also had to compensate for the motion of the sea. Local weather conditions usually deteriorated in the afternoon, so most filming had to be stopped after 1500 or 1600. To make matters worse, about 30 additional boats used by the cast and crew were needed for lighting, cameras, make up, catering, costumes etc., none of which had bathrooms. Filming had to stop repeatedly so people could be ferried to portable toilets on a barge anchored near the shore. All these limitations usually allowed for only 5 or 6 setups on each day of filming, significantly extending the shooting schedule.
Kevin costner had paper that had the same writing as the map on the kids back.. some Chinese characters.. seeing the paper the old man was able to decipher the language..
I found this movie, despite it's many flaws, to be an admirably thought-out look into a "possible" future, with inventiveness enough to rank alongside the third Mad Max movie from ten years previously. The atoll itself is an astounding piece of work, but the Mariner's boat, the Smokers' floating fortress (the revelation at the end as to why it was called the 'Deez is occasion for a smile every time), the costume design, the weapons design, everything evoked a sense of wonder which is what the best science fiction does. Add to this James Newton Howard's dynamic score, and the result may not be as good as it might have been but, by golly, it's QUITE good enough! 🤓

When he read the completed script he said "Are you crazy, this will cost TEN MILLION DOLLARS to make!!!" The writer, undeterred, shopped it around to the big studios until he found a sucker that somehow thought this would be a good idea to spend $175 million on ($342 million today). It recouped just over half of its budget.
I enjoy Waterworld but wouldn't necessarily call it a good movie. Also, don't put too much thought into the "science" behind this movie. Waterworld and science do not go together. There isn't enough water on Earth, frozen or otherwise, to even come close to covering all of the continents.

There's like two parts early in the movie where you can see dry land if you really look. I saw this soon after it came out and I really liked this movie, it felt kinda exotic, other-worldly. Most of these characters are use to only water, so dry land would be foreign to them and for the mariner who is somehow a mutation adapted to water, maybe more strange than for humans not adapted to water. Either way, he preferred the world he was use to, Waterworld, but nothing says he couldn't come back to visit.
The key word to "Science Fiction"... is "Fiction". Just enjoy it for what it is. Having said that, a lot of us are still waiting for you to continue on with Star Trek and Firefly. As for me that's when I subscribed to your channel. Any chance you might mention when you're going to get back to those two?

The Postman is a bad movie. I love it, it was filmed where I live, it has a bunch of extras in it that are people I know, and it’s still a bad movie. It’s not a misunderstood masterpiece, but it’s entertaining.

The many problems surrounding its filming led to some ridiculous mistakes!I still remember how everyone in the cinema burst out laughing when in one of the underwater scenes (the kiss of life) a scuba diver appeared in the corner of the screen, obviously from the rescue team.This was probably deleted when they released the movie on disc, but I'm not sure..

A good movie compared to the Postman.
You haven't heard of the water trapped in rock under the Earth that is enough to cover the heights mountains by I don't know how many miles.

There is water trapped deep under the earth in some type of rock, if that were released it would be enough to cover the highest mountains by miles.
If all of Antarctica icecaps melts they say it could raised the ocean level 240 feet. But not enough to cover all the land. I guess I don't know.
