A lot of people hate this movie or make fun of it, but I really love it. The whole concept is really cool to me and while the movie could have been better, it’s still great imo.
This movie and The Postman get a lot of hate. I enjoy both movies for what they are, popcorn entertainment without a lot of thinking required. Not everything can or needs to be The Godfather or Shawshank. Edit to add: I think a big part of the hate Waterworld and The Postman get is because they came shortly after Dances With Wolves with other high rated movies like Field of Dreams, Untouchables and A Perfect World giving Costner a somewhat 'serious actor' reputation.
This movie is criminally underrated. Even though it bombed at the box office and it got a lot of hate, it’s still a fun entertaining post-apocalyptic/action/adventure movie, it’s like Mad Max on water.

Jack Black is also the guy in the pig mask (possibly the same character). I'm glad they cut out the Mt Everest thing because that means that there are tropical plants growing at 29,000 ft.
@@tremorsfan That's no longer 29,000ft - in order for the peak of Everest to be the only island, sea level would need to rise by almost 28,300ft, making the highest point on Everest Island a mere 700ft. * The rumor about how evolution worked so fast on The Mariner, is because it wasn't evolution. He was a product of genetic engineering. When the government realized that all the snow and ice at the north and south poles were melting, and what would happen as a result, they quickly put a black project in motion to develop human beings that can breathe underwater. There were nuclear submarines, but eventually even they ran out of power, but they ran out of food and water long before that. * At the end of the movie, I think they were implying that the water was receding, albeit, very, very slowly. Which implies that whatever caused the polar caps to melt in the first place(perhaps a weapon of WWIII or something) was no longer heating them in such a way, allowing them to return to their normal pre-flood temperatures. I think the film was also implying that The Mariner would return, and visit from time to time. There might also be more baddies out there besides just The Smokers. Don't worry. Hi :) Glad you enjoyed the reaction. Have you subscribed to Jen, she has so many great films coming this year. And surprise tv shows from time to time, currently it's The It Crowd. 😃👍👍
Fun review as always! WATERWORLD was indeed expensive and suffered a tough box-office. That being said, it still stands as a fun and robust science fiction/adventure. And...surprisingly...NOT filmed in widescreen!!
Hi Jen great reaction as always. So ❤️ your takes on the movies you watch. Yes Kevin Costner won an Oscar for Dances with Wolves (Priducing & Directing). Other Costner greats if you haven’t seen are, Obviously Dances, The Untouchables (loved, filmed in Chicago, my hometown), Field of Dreams, Bull Durham (another baseball film, comedy), JFK (stellar film), The Bodguard ( with Whitney Houston) No Way Out, The Postman (highly underrated) & Silverado (western) just to name a few. You will love them all. Especially Dances, Untouchables, Field of Dreams & Bull Durham. You are the best. 👏👏👏
Saint Joe is a reference to the captain of the Exxon Valdez, which is the ship the smokers are using, Joseph Hazelwood. He was definitely a saint to the smokers. 😅
This movie is WAY better than the critics ever let you know. Let's face it - compatred to the stuff that Hollywood is crapping out these days it's an absolute classic!
The Postman is pretty good. It is based on a book by David Brin. There is a trilogy based on three books that you might like. Allegiant, Insurgent, and Divergent.
I loved this movie as the ultimate cheesy guilty pleasure; it's a lot of fun to watch BECAUSE of its outlandishness, not in spite of it. The movie didn't take itself too seriously and had a vibe of nutty fun, and my favorite movie symphony by James Newton Howard. And I admit the ending felt very uplifting because of the music.
@@billthomas478 I remember on The Simpsons Lisa was watching "The Postman" on DVD or Blu-Ray, and when she tuned on the director's commentary, it was Kevin Costner saying "I'm sorry! I'm SO sorry! I don't know what I was thinking!"
11:52 was "Missed ya by this much!" also yes, Waterworld is very Mad Max on water. I think i remember hearing that is what the producers were going for. :) I love the Kevin Costner "apocalyptic-type" movies: Waterworld, and The Postman. I think you should do Dances With Wolves as well. think you'll enjoy it.
30:05 In the 90's there was an environmental disaster when an Oil tanker called the Exxon Valdez (same ship as in this film) crashed into a reef and spilled oil all over the Prince William Sound. The captain of that ship, the one that took the brunt of the blame, was Joseph Hazelwood.
People who were around when this film was released would recognize the name of the sinking barge where the villains were. The Exxon Valdez was the oil tanker that leaked oil of the coast of Alaska. And the poster that you saw of Joseph Hazelwood was one of the ill-fated ship's captain.
Exciting reaction, Jen. 💜 You always make a splash. Water way to have a good time. Okay, I'll stop now. 🌊 There's tons of good Costner. I'd first recommend, J.F.K. (1991), Dance With Wolves: Director's Cut (1990), A Perfect World (1993).
"Is that a hot air balloon?" ... Nope, THAT is a blimp. 🤣 "So, they're on a barge?" .... Nope, they're on a super tanker. fun reaction 👍not a bad film, I always enjoyed it.
Enjoy your reactions and you're beautiful. Skal from the North Georgia mountains 🤘🤘 WaterWorld has been one of my favorites since it first came out on VHS back in the day.
Jens has done The Untouchables now, just a few weeks ago. She loved it! It's here on her channel and the fab full length version on her Patreon. There's over 300 movies there! ♥ You should consider checking it out for a month.
Dances With Wolves may appear this year, it's very high in her list on the movie request sit she has and is recommended highly in comments often. I think that film is a masterpiece, is it Costner's finest work? J.F.K. was so awesome too. Jen's film request site is at this address. 👍 jenmurray DOT com
I just looked up the little girl on IMDb to see what had ever become of her and saw that. Had no idea before. Turns out she was/is a fairly prolific actor, or has had a lot of roles in films and TV anyway.
I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed watching your first watches of movies. You’re one of the smartest people doing these kind of videos and it’s been fun to watch you watch many of my favorite movies and hear your take. Great work!
This was filmed in Honolulu, Hawaii and Los Angeles. The Atoll set actually sank multiple times during filming and the actresses Jeanne Triplehorn(Helen) and Tina Majorino(Enola) were bitten by crabs and piranhas so the crew had to pay their medical bills, the film went way overbudget which was part of why it bombed so badly plus Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper had just recently done "The Postman" and the "Super Mario Bros. Movie" which weren`t that well-received by critics or audiences!
Hey Jen. The Saint Joe Hazelwood that they mentioned was the captain of the actual Exxon Valdez. For some more Costner movies you might try The Untouchables with Sean Connery, Field of dreams or Silverado. All have great casts and stories.
Growing up as a typical boy, “Prince of Thieves” came out at a pivotal time in my childhood, and led to many treehouses, rope swings, and staffs being fashioned out of whatever was available. Thinking about it now, it’s kind of amazing that nobody got seriously injured. When “Waterworld” came out a few years later, it seemed like Kevin Costner was speaking directly to my soul. Looking back, I see all these movies in a different light, and am a little more critical of Keven Costner as an actor, but he sure knew how to tap into the adolescent boy demographic in the early 90’s - back when kids used to play outside (he kind of jumped the shark with The Postman). I went to the Hawaiian Vaudeville Festival in 1996 on the Big Island near where a lot of the movie was filmed, and Kevin Costner’s Trimaran was still anchored off-shore. We took out an ocean kayak (there were humpback whales there at the time, which was why most people were paddling out) to go look at it, because it was just about the coolest thing, and when we saw that it was a real boat, right there, actually on the water, it instantly became a mission to go see it up close. I have a ton of movie suggestions for you, but I’ll give you two now. You mentioned how this was a flop at the start of the video, but if you want to see another big 90’s flop that’s also actually pretty amazing, watch “Cutthroat Island” from the same year. It basically ruined Geena Davis’s career (A League of Their Own, Beetlejuice, Thelma and Louise…). It’s a silly 90’s action-adventure pirate movie (which coincidently also has a similar tattoo map subplot), but one that I loved growing up. I was never able to enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies because, after having watched Cutthroat Island a hundred times on VHS, it was always really obvious that Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t filmed on location. It just never *feels* like they’re out on the open ocean; it’s actually kind of claustrophobic. It's kind of funny how you compare this movie to Pirates of the Caribbean. Waterworld is a fun, 90’s summer blockbuster, but it’s also really dark at times. I always loved how on-the-nose the villains being called the “smokers” was. Not only are they the only ones still using fossil fuels, but for some unexplained reason the oil tanker they live on apparently also had an endless supply of cigarettes - because why not. And the old guy who’s only job is to measure the oil level and hasn’t seen the sun in 50 years saying, “Thank you God” when he sees it’s all about to blow up is both hilarious and incredibly dark. I’d also like to recommend Dennis Hopper’s first film playing a leading role, which is “Night Tide” from 1961. I don’t want to spoil anything, but let’s just say it’s also ocean themed, and has some really great music. It’s an underrated film, and deserves some attention for how much it stands out from a lot of movies being made at the time in that genre. And just to round it out at three movie recommendations tangentially related to Waterworld, I’ve got one more. It’s kind of a deep cut. It’s called Airborne, from 1993, and was one of the first movies Jack Black (the airplane pilot in Waterworld) was ever in. It’s a rollerblading movie (arguably THE rollerblading movie). I haven’t watched it in years, so can’t vouch for its quality, but I’ve never talked to anyone under 30 who believed me when I told them that rollerblading was actually cool for a couple years in the early 90’s, so if you ever got around to watching that one you might break the internet.
Airborne was awesome. Hard to believe that it came out 31 years ago. Another movie I loved was called The Rescue from 1988. I'd like to think they'd still hold up. I just found an upload on TH-cam of the 1990 Captain America movie. I thought this movie was amazing, when I was a kid.
Joe Hazelwood was the captain of the Exxon Valdez. It struck a reef, off the coast of Alaska and leaked around 11 million Gallons of crude oil, into the ocean.
This is one of my favorites as a child. I simply love this film. Criminally underrated for sure. There's too many people out there who haven't seen this due to negative word of mouth and that's a damn shame.
The Universal Studios Hollywood live show of Waterworld is great and can be watched on TH-cam from people who recorded it however being there is even better.
My husband was one of the extras in this movie as one of the smokers. The parts that he was in were filmed in Long Beach California. Part of the reason why it took so long to film this movie is that during the time they were filming it Los Angeles California was going through a raining season and since many of the scenes were filmed outside they could not film on those days. By the way all of the smokers in this movie were people who actually smoked tobacco cigarettes in real life as my husband did at the time.
thank you Jen.. only you has reacted to this movie which was a Blockbuster. they were the most rented movies of the era and big success among Twister, Rambo II, Spider man, the Hulk..etc .I remember in a long waiting kist to rent this movie ..I love this movie and its concept.. it had to be you to react to this one..btw looking beautiful with the violet top as always.. ❤️
I *loved* this movie when it came out. Loved it. I went through a pretty heavy post-apocalyptic phase and I *love* fantasy. So this movie was right up my alley.
Audiences back in the day would probably been excited to see Dennis Hopper in the role of the main villain, the Deacon. Hopper was a well known actor back then. He also played the villain in the first Speed movie, one which I recommend that you watch.
Waterworld was by absolutely no means a hollywood flop. This was one of my fav movies growing up and also, if you ever make it down to universal studios in cali, the waterworld show is really cool to see in person.
Production Budget $175 million Estimated Total Cost $235 million Worldwide Box Office $264 million Estimated Revenue Kept By Theaters $132 million Estimated Total Loss $103 million If you don't think losing 100,000,000 dollars makes a film a flop, okay.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Been a while since I last watched this. Love the part where the girl tells Dennis Hopper "You guys are in so much trouble! "😂😂 Love your reaction as always ❤ Have a good night. 😉
22:03 "I wish I had feet like his. Then, maybe I could swim." It's quite a surprise, to me, whenever I encounter someone who does not know how to swim, and that's under _modern_ circumstances.
After Waterworld ballooned from its initial $100 million budget, people involved in the project estimated the final production cost at around $175-180 million, with Kevin Costner-also a producer on the film-confirming it had cost $172 million. Including distribution and marketing the total cost of producing and releasing the film came to $245 million. It made $264 million at the boxoffice, it was a flop because it couldn't recuperate its massive budget due to the percentage of the boxoffice revenue the movie theaters retain.
This movie actually ended up breaking even. People were just freaking out because it was the most expensive movie at the time. Another great Costner movie is Field of Dreams.
I’ve never understood why this film got such a bad rap. I’ve always enjoyed it. Loved the kid, Triplehorn was great, lots of special effects, and some corny stuff. Thanks, Jen. Oh, and ‘yes’ to Dances With Wolves.
I'm so happy you enjoyed this fantastic epic, Jen. This film is very unfairly maligned. I absolutely love it and I don't understand the hate that it gets. I wish there was a documentary about the behind-the-scenes drama. Apparently Costner was a real diva, and it was utter chaos filming on the water. Some people nearly drowned.
There's a novel version that came out with the movie that goes into more detail about what happened to the oceans and an alternate ending where he does explain why he's leaving, to search for people like him and Helen gives him a name, Ulysses, it ends with them also finding a plaque on the cliff stating they're on MT Everest. The only continuation of the story is in several comic books taking place after the movie whereas see him exploring his origins, meeting new villains and seeing more of the world.
HeyJen, yes, anytime you film on water, especially at the scale could easily double or triple the cost of filming and that underwater city scene was state of the art CGI at the time and I believe that 30 second or so scene cost several million dollars alone. I was around at the time and it was pan basically because of how much it cost I think people were expecting a lot more for the amount of money. I always liked it even though it’s basically mad max on the water. Still an interesting story and a beautiful looking film. I’m only about halfway through your reaction but I’m guessing you’re really gonna like it. Have a great one.👍
While it failed to recoup its massive budget despite being one of the highest-grossing films of its year (it was the most expensive movie of all time when it came out - around 350 Million $, adjusted for inflation) it recouped the money through home video sales later on. And the scale of the sets (where most of the money was probably spent) is mindboggling. Today, the Atoll would probably be 70% CGI. And I LOVE James Newton Howards' musical Score. Btw, there was an actual water-based movie, released the same year, which was a *catastrophic* box office desaster: Cutthroat Island. Its actually a very enjoyable flick too, worth checking out.
The oil tanker they re on is named the Exxon Valdez. In March of 1989 It ran aground in Price William Sound in Alaska. It spilled 11 million gallon of oil into the sound. It was carrying 53.1 million gallons, 1.25 million barrels. This was rated number 34 biggest oil spill in the world. But it was the largest environmental disaster in the US, for at least 25 years. FYI, the ship is 987 feet long. That's more than 3 football fields long., 166 feet wide and 88 feet tall. Joseph Hazelwood was the captain at the time of the accident. He was not on the bridge at the time. The accident happened at 12:04 AM, just after midnight. But they spent the next hour trying to get the ship off of the reef, this probably opened the hole even more.

Kim Coates was also in "Open Range" with Costner..... He was the Gunfighter that had the injured arm.....
@@CoastalNomad He has always been an excellent character actor. He delivers.
Such a classic.I used to love this movie when I was a kid . It used to come on tv all the time
😳 what the what, I just randomly rewatched this two days ago. I feel like it’s aged decently and is more entertaining than given credit for. I always related to the poor old “oh thank God” fella 😆
I love the word "Contraption" and it was used many times in this review and I approve of this.
I love this movie❤ Love the music in it❤❤❤❤
Hi :) Glad you enjoyed the reaction.
Love this movie so much, watched it loads over the years. The haircut scene always cracks me up lol
“Menacing on their Sea-doo’s!” 😂 Love her random quips so much.
If i recall, the Atoll set was destroyed by a hurricane and had to be rebuilt.
One of my favourite parts of the movie is when they reveal that the "Deez"" is actually the Exxon Valdeez....
Bags of mostly water, living on a world of mostly water! 😊
Cute TNG reference, Eric!
@@kevinlewallen4778 Thanks Kevin 😊 I really didn't think that ANYONE would get it!

People always hating on Waterworld. I love it.
Saint Joe is a reference to the captain of the Exxon Valdez, which is the ship the smokers are using, Joseph Hazelwood. He was definitely a saint to the smokers. 😅
That eyepatch moves around...a lot!
This movie is WAY better than the critics ever let you know. Let's face it - compatred to the stuff that Hollywood is crapping out these days it's an absolute classic!
Personally this is one of my favorite movies. A lot of people I know aren't really fans of it but hey to each their own.
Now do, The Postman
Great villan in that epic post-apocalyptic tale
I actually like The Postman even tho its got nothing in common with the book apart from the title
"Cry, 'Havoc!' and let slip the dogs of war."
@@billthomas478 I remember on The Simpsons Lisa was watching "The Postman" on DVD or Blu-Ray, and when she tuned on the director's commentary, it was Kevin Costner saying "I'm sorry! I'm SO sorry! I don't know what I was thinking!"
“Dry land is not a myth! I have seen it!” Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy. But no one in this movie, apparently. Not even the extended version
The Cable Guy is HILARIOUS! "scramby eggs."
11:52 was "Missed ya by this much!"
also yes, Waterworld is very Mad Max on water. I think i remember hearing that is what the producers were going for. :)
I love the Kevin Costner "apocalyptic-type" movies: Waterworld, and The Postman.
Yup, I mentioned the oil spill in my full length 👍
Exciting reaction, Jen. 💜 You always make a splash. Water way to have a good time. Okay, I'll stop now. 🌊
There's tons of good Costner. I'd first recommend, J.F.K. (1991), Dance With Wolves: Director's Cut (1990), A Perfect World (1993).
"Is that a hot air balloon?" ... Nope, THAT is a blimp. 🤣
"So, they're on a barge?" .... Nope, they're on a super tanker.
fun reaction 👍not a bad film, I always enjoyed it.
I enjoy this movie..and Dennis Hopper is always fun to watch.
Add The Postman to your Costner list. It's another fun Costner post-apocalyptic film, although it didn't fare well in the theaters.
Enjoy your reactions and you're beautiful. Skal from the North Georgia mountains 🤘🤘
WaterWorld has been one of my favorites since it first came out on VHS back in the day.
Dances With Wolves, The Untouchables, Open Range, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Silverado, Tin Cup, all worthy of a reaction.
One my favorite movie as a kid from San Pedro , California.👍🍿
It's pouring rain today, perfect for Waterworld! See ya in the chat, Jen!
If it doesn't stop soon we'll have to grow Gills!
Jens singing is cute 😃
Missed her calling if her occupation is not music-related. Her voice is just so dang cool.
Most iconic intro voice. That dude did sooo many movie trailer voice overs in the 90s.
I remember watching Napoleon Dynamite and thinking where do I know Deb from? And then it hit me like a steak to the face
I just looked up the little girl on IMDb to see what had ever become of her and saw that. Had no idea before. Turns out she was/is a fairly prolific actor, or has had a lot of roles in films and TV anyway.
I’ve been looking everywhere for a comment mentioning her! She’s a great actress. She also was in a tv version of Alice in wonderland, and it’s a trip
My personal favorite is Corina Corina with Whoopi and Miss Tina. RIP Ray Liotta
I just wanted to say that I have really enjoyed watching your first watches of movies. You’re one of the smartest people doing these kind of videos and it’s been fun to watch you watch many of my favorite movies and hear your take. Great work!
Thanks I'm having such a blast watching stuff with you guys :)
Every time I go to a major city I quote this movie. "I don't belong here, I belong out there..." 🤣
This is one of those movies that everybody hates, that I love.
I LOVED this Movie! Saw it in the Theaters, then got it on VHS, Then DVD, then Digital.
This is one of my favorites as a child. I simply love this film. Criminally underrated for sure. There's too many people out there who haven't seen this due to negative word of mouth and that's a damn shame.
LOVE this movie... Anola appeared as Deb in Napolean Dynamite!
An underrated Kevin Costner movie I enjoy - Mr Brooks, with William Hurt (RIP)
Jen ,i propose you for the poll two action movies of 90"s decade for you react, FAIR GAME and THE SUBSTITUTE.
I hiked down to that the valley. It took a couple of hours on switchbacks down the mountain. It is a black sand beach too. Paradise 😊
The Universal Studios Hollywood live show of Waterworld is great and can be watched on TH-cam from people who recorded it however being there is even better.
I enjoyed this movie in the theatres. Very interesting story. Dennis Hopper has some funny lines (he's the bad guy).
this was my vhs tape staple
Not a good movie, but that Capt. Hezelwood gag made laugh so loud, everyone at the cinema turned around to look at me.
Dances With Wolves definitely...

No Way Out
I *loved* this movie when it came out.
Production Budget $175 million
Estimated Total Cost $235 million
Worldwide Box Office $264 million
Estimated Revenue Kept By Theaters $132 million
Estimated Total Loss $103 million
If you don't think losing 100,000,000 dollars makes a film a flop, okay.
I love this movie. Solid SciFi. I remember going to Universal Studios Orlando and seeing this Waterworld based stunt show.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Been a while since I last watched this. Love the part where the girl tells Dennis Hopper "You guys are in so much trouble! "😂😂 Love your reaction as always ❤ Have a good night. 😉
22:03 "I wish I had feet like his. Then, maybe I could swim."
It's quite a surprise, to me, whenever I encounter someone who does not know how to swim, and that's under _modern_ circumstances.
I like running with wolves more than field of dreams, but I’m a corny mothaforker
One of the funniest movie deaths of all time. Depth Gage “oh thank God”
I’ve never understood why this film got such a bad rap. I’ve always enjoyed it. Loved the kid, Triplehorn was great, lots of special effects, and some corny stuff. Thanks, Jen. Oh, and ‘yes’ to Dances With Wolves.
I really like this movie. I don't understand why it wasn't more successful.
Kevin Costner is awesome i love his movie Postman from 1997 it takes a little bit longer to watch but i love every second of it!
'For love of the game' and 'Field of Dreams' are my personal Costner favourites.
I always loved the film, so many great ideas. Just like his other post-apocalyptic awesome flop, The Postman.
love how the dude's eye patch keeps switching eyes.😆
I'm so happy you enjoyed this fantastic epic, Jen. This film is very unfairly maligned. I absolutely love it and I don't understand the hate that it gets. I wish there was a documentary about the behind-the-scenes drama. Apparently Costner was a real diva, and it was utter chaos filming on the water. Some people nearly drowned.
A lot of people hate on this movie, but I love it. It's like the "Road Warrior" except it's on water. Thanks for reacting to it.
The girl who plays Enola is Tina Majorino, it has been 30 years and every time I see her I remember how good this movie is.
Same!
