- Welcome to our first time watching Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).
We loved it! A classic movie, conceived by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman and written by Lawrence Kasdan, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Steven Spielberg.
We really enjoyed this and hope you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussion as we watch it for the first time from two different generations (one of us a very long time ago). We both found it great fun and masterful storytelling. It exceeded our expectations.

This is a re-upload because the first one we uploaded had glitches and we wanted to fix them. And then whilst we were doing that, we fell in love with the film again so we did a re-edit of the whole reaction with more scenes and tighter cuts. We also adjusted the volume on the clips and reduced the opacity. It now has a better sound mix and better colour grade. We felt the film deserves this.
I'm a 43 year old man and watching you two makes me wish I was a dad 😢 I never really thought about what I would be missing out on until now.

Saw this in the theater with me dad. He grew up on watching serials upon which the film emulates. He loved it. Especially Indy shooting the swordsman. (Trivia note: Ford was having a bout of stomach flu and wasn’t up to a prolonged fight scene with the swordsman. So the script was rewritten that Ford would just shoot the guy and be done with it. The audience’s reaction was laugh out loud and cheering).
A classic film for the ages.
An excellent film. I do like how you explain certain scenes and give background information to your son, so that he has a better understanding the story. The last shot of the movie is showing the Government doesn't want to deal with the supernatural elements, or strange objects, so they just stick them in a giant warehouse, and forget about them.
This came out the year i was born and what a great year for film and music ❤
I thought the best reaction comment I had seen and heard to this movie was at 13:11 when the child ask, "Does he (Indiana Jones) have any proper family?" 😇 But when the child ask "Should we be looking at it(the ark)" at 49:20☺ I knew this was the best reaction to "Raiders of the Lost Ark" ever
I’m not a father but I recall introducing film to my niece and nephew and we bonded because of a love of film. The first set films I showed them were the original Star Wars trilogy (and I’m not a fan of them) and they were stomped at how entertaining it was. I then segwayed to the Indy trilogy and I remember my niece crying her eyes out when the film ended, and she cried because she loved the film so much so that it became her favourite film of all time. She is 18 now and she still compares each film she sees to it in terms of pacing and excitement. Cannot wait to see more videos of yours, it can be a daunting task introducing a new generation to what they would consider an ancient film😂

Actually Star Wars was filmed in 1975 and 1976. The first Raiders started filming ~ June of 1980.
@@chadro_g1145 Empire came out in 1980 and Jedi in 1983. I was referring to the trilogy in general, not specifically A New Hope.
Solo was always clean shaven, Indi was the scruffy one.
Both of you may be too young for this but me and dad played the Atari 2600 game of this. He had a job coming up where he'd be gone a year. I needed his help in the map room (the staff of Ra showing where the Ark is). Finally it lit up. We raced like bandits to go dig and get it. WE GOT IT! One day before dad had to leave. Message for the kid, play adventure games with dad, you'll remember it forever
Saw this when it premiered in the theater. One of my favorite movies. I got a movie reaction suggestion for you guys it's another one of my favorite movies, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

Hey! I was recently recommended your channel, probably because I love film, and I watch a lot of movie reactions and reviews. This is the first full video of yours that I've watched. I've loved the Indy films for most of my life. This one came out a decade before I was born. "Temple" and "Crusade" also came out before then as well , but I was able to see "Crystal Skull" and "Dial of Destiny" in the theater. My all-time favorite is "Last Crusade", I even have a replica of the Grail Diary prop from the film.
I figured I'd comment to provide some context and answer some of the questions you had. The original trilogy of films were based on the the finding of religious artifacts to prevent those who would misuse them from finding and keeping them. The two best examples being "Raiders" and "Crusade", in preventing the Nazi's from gaining any more power than they already had.
The "Ark" is a reference to the "Ark of the Covenant". According to the Bible, the Ark contained the stone tablets upon which were written the Ten Commandments that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai, Aaron's (Moses' brother) rod, which he had turned into a snake, and a pot of manna, a type of food that God gave to the Israelites during their 40 year exodus from Egypt and into Canaan. (Reference: Hebrews 9:4, and much of the beginning of the Old Testament) There is speculation that there may have been other things like sacred stones and small statues.
The reason they want it so bad is because it was an artifact of religious importance with unknown power. Hitler and the Nazi's were of the thought that Christianity is and should be the supreme religion, and therefore wanted to be in possession of the Ark, a symbol of God's covenant with his chosen people. Hitler believed he was creating a world of God's chosen people (a master race), and eradicating the earth of those he thought went against this philosophy. Indy himself never really states if he is religious or anti-religious, but as we see he still goes after these artifacts, and witnesses the supernatural effects they contain. So maybe there is a hint that he may believe a little bit.
As for seeing inside, 1 Samuel 6:19 in the Bible states that God struck down 70 men for looking into the Ark while it was in Philistine custody. A learned Historian and Professor like Dr. Indiana Jones, though he may not have been religious, would know the testaments of the Bible well. It could be this knowledge plus some of his own educated intuition that told him not to look at the opened Ark, and was therefore spared of it's (or God's) judgement.
The U.S. government most likely took possession of the Ark as important but potentially dangerous artifact, and secretly disposed of it by hiding in Warehouse 51 in Area 51. (We find this out in "Crystal Skull") This warehouse likely contains similar type artifacts, including some from Indy's other adventures. The final scene is an establishing shot of the vast, vast amount of items of this sort with potential destructive or conflict inducing properties.
I really enjoyed your thesis at the end about if some artifacts really belong in a museum, or should they be returned to where they were found/taken. I think the plight of the Sankara Stones in "Temple of Doom" shows Indy's thought process in this respect. I really think you guys would like "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns". "Returns" is one of my all-time favorites. I was about the same age as Alex O'Connell (10) when it came out in theaters. Maybe you could react to those as well as the rest of the Indiana Jones films.

The end in the warehouse where the ark was put was not full of other arks. It was just a big government warehouse full of assorted top secret stuff. I think the final wide shot of the ark being rolled into the huge warehouse full of crates was showing that the ark was just going to be another of a long list of assorted items deemed top secret by our US government just wasting away in storage and being yet again lost with time just as it was for previous centuries.

Harrison Ford was sick when they shot the scene with the man with the sword, so they just had him shoot the guy.
Correct. A lot of the crew came down with dysentery and he was physically sick. If you watch it at 22:49 you can see where he was sick just before the cameras rolled. Fair play to him, he carried on to get the shot...
The implication of the vastness of the McGuffin's storage location is that we are expected to interpret this as the object being buried again, just this time it's in red tape instead of sand and rock. Never to be seen again... until the remains of the current civilisation are rummaged through, I guess. ;-]

Is your brain broken? I did a 5 second Google search and there's no government warehouse that big. And the ark is a mythical object, as such was never actually buried anywhere. Stop trying to sound clever and stop spreading your lies and misinformation.

the sealed up ark being wheeled into that warehouse is one of my favourite scenes. I think the reveal of that enormous collection of similarly anonymous looking crates really sparks the imagination. we saw what the ark did and how beyond our understanding it is and we're suddenly 'reframed' to see that this amazing artifact is just one item in a huge collection of other strange and powerful objects that have all been locked away for everyones safety.
I was on the fence ab subscribing bc dad…kinda spoiled what was gonna happen at least twice & usually that’s a no-go for me. But then dad also said the thing that made me decide. He said Bellach was a sexist & misogynist for making Marian dress up for him…and I HAPPILY subscribed. Thanks, dad for imparting how important it is to always be respectful (honestly, of everyone), not be a hater or a disgusting pig.🤘
Parenthood is about guiding young ones and pointing out negative characteristics as well as the positive ones. Films, as well as entertaining, are a great tool for parents to begin a platform of discussion.
I saw this in the theater with my father when it first came out, but I was 27 at the time. I think you are the first reactor who has appreciated the wonderful opening, with the Paramount logo fading into the mountain for the first shot. The boulder stunned everyone in the theater---still my favorite adventure scene.
I actually visited a Smithsonian warehouse where very old newspapers were stored, and it had some similarities to the final scene, one of the best final shots in cinema, I think. That scene was also intended satirically, because excessive government secrecy was very much in the news when this movie was made.
Your son made a lot of savvy comments on this, especially about the implausible, long swim from the ship to the sub, which I never thought about before. However, I am not so bothered by the idea that the sub ran on the surface to the island. Germany was not at war yet, and the island may have been nearby. Moreover, subs travel faster on the surface than when submerged.

Harrison Ford actually did that swim from the boat to the sub. They were looking for a stunt guy to do it but he did it himself in the meantime
To answer a couple of your questions, the contents of the Ark was the remnants of the tablets of the Ten Commandments, only they were in there for so long that they turned to sand. And secondly, the baffling ending was suggesting that the Ark was now being stored in the warehouse of lost top secrets, waiting to be opened by some unsuspecting agents someday, whose faces were going to melt, and their heads explode.

if there are some gruesome effects in these movies. it can help to watch some "making of" these effects :) it put it into perspective.

there's also a TV-series called "Warehouse 13" about the warehouse and the things it holds inside :D theres also a indiana jones episode. also it wasnt very good. xD
Thinking of generations, one difference in movie generations as it were. Where as they showed the splatter of blood when the German mechanic got cut up by the airplane planes then. Today's or such they would show it very graphic, at the least have like guts sprayed across. Blood of spray tells all needed but today's movie they would feel they needed to have that graphic gore slipped in.
If you liked the ending, you may really like the TV series, Warehouse 13, which follows the premise of stored, protected artifacts, but from am ore fantasy.
The power of the ark is that any "army that has the ark before it, is invincible."

Indy was an archaeologist - he was "excavating" the artefacts not for himself, but to be displayed in museums.....

I was quite young when I saw this in the theaters, and I loved it ever since. Certainly not too young to appreciate the melting of some Nazis either (though I would grow to appreciate that part even more). 😄

In fairness to Indy, his motivation for that sort of thievery is among the relatively more ethical compared to many in the far more unregulated, quite destructive earlier era of archaeology, which carried over into some of the 20th century.
Oh, I love the Indiana Jones films (especially the third one; the chemstry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is just amazing)!

It's a kid's show but the writing is awesome - so adults can enjoy it, too; even without being nostalgic for it.
It has lots of humor but balances it with darker, quite mature themes.
But the best of it are the characters themselves. I don't know many shows where I really like everybody.
(Plus, it is very popular - so it might bring you some views. ;))
My parents took me to see this movie in the theaters when I was three years old I don’t have any memory of any of it, except for the same where their faces melt off in my mom covering my eyes

I recommend that you and your son watch the classic movie “Captains Courageous” (1937)starring Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, and the child-actor Freddie Bartholomew. It’s an action-packed coming-of-age movie that I have no doubt you would enjoy watching together. I think your son would very much relate to the character played by Freddie because they are nearly the same age, and I believe your boy will inevitably see himself in the place of young Freddie throughout the exciting adventure that befalls him. I think he will identify with the character development Freddie undergoes during this touching, a heartwarming movie…
Not many know, but indiana was heavily inspired by the movie Secret of the Incas. The first 10 minutes or so of raiders basically plays out the original movie. I forget the guys namez but he too has the jacket, gun, lasso and that 50s gentleman swag.

Another actor you probably didn't recognize: George Harris. 26 years after Raiders, Harris, who played the ship captain, played Kingsley Shacklebolt in Harry Potter!
Great actor who miraculously hardly seems to age. In my opinion, his best role was in “Layer Cake” as Morty.
This came out when I was 11.
It was my favorite of all time and made me forget a certain space movie. I NEEDED this movie.
I also had a paper route. So, every week, right👏after👏 collections 👏 I would speed off on my bike to a matinee of Indy.
I saw it once a week for 32 weeks, and then a lot more when they released a year later.

The Indiana Jones trilogy was dated from the start in a way since they're set in the 30's. Now the film style, effects, etc can ve debated about being "dated" of course but not the content of the story.
If you want to see some of what's in those other crates in the warehouse at the end I suggest finding a SyFy tv show called Warehouse 13. It's based on that warehouse. It ran from 2009-2014 on the SyFy Network. The show is also connected to another show called Eureka where some of their technology comes from.

He's an atheist who is forced to use faith to survive real religious relics. We men love the trilogy, but hate seeing him looking old, retiring, chasing fake time travel dials and aliens and getting married.
Spoiler much...? Also atheist is a pretty strong moniker for someone like Dr. Jones. I mean after all that he has witnessed, he'd be agnostic at the very least, and even that is pushing it. Then again this is a fictional character, if his religious affiliation, or lack thereof, was important I'm sure we'd have been told and/or shown.

Like I said he would most likely be considered agnostic, at least or until he witnesses the power of the artifacts first hand. If he did in fact firmly disbelieve why would he choose not to look at the opened Ark and tell Merrian to do the same?
@@ThatKidRudy The old man that deciphered the Head Piece in the deleted scene warned him not to look. So, when he's helpless, and he hears the weird sounds, its the same reason why many atheists in a battlefield or who gets cancer would find himself praying to God. If its all you can do, it couldn't hurt to try. I will concede true-Atheism includes an actual religious claim, but in common speech, the Atheism umbrella includes all who disbelieve in God, including Agnostics, who don't actively believe, because they don't "know". If I had to label his brand of atheism, he prides himself as a Scientist, and so prone to Scientism, that science can explain everything, therefore no "magic" in the ark, he was not afraid of the ark... until he was.

These may have already been addressed by now, but: Indy's goal was to take the Ark from the Nazis, which he achieved (and he also "got the girl"). The Ark, being a holy item, first burned the swastika symbol from its box. Then, it destroyed all the evil men when opened. The ending scene was meant as a comically tragic/cynical joke. No "top men" were studying the Ark at all. It was simply being loaded up into a warehouse with other ancient artifacts, likely never to be touched again. Typical governmental bureaucracy at its finest. So, the Ark collects dust once more...
We found the Ark burning the Nazi symbol a strange scene. At this point in the story, the Ark was in the possession of Indian Jones.
@@GenerationMediaReaction Indiana was able to take the Ark back from the Nazis and put it on the ship. But, the Ark was still in the Nazis' crate with the swastika on it. The Ark, being a good and Holy relic, burned the evil Nazi symbol off and rejected it entirely (while also foreshadowing what would later happen during the ceremony).

People in the 80's were more religious and didn't need the story of 'Lott and his wife' explained. That's why you don't look.
Yes, but this isn't referencing Lot and his wife. Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt because she turned looked at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah after receiving instruction not to. The Ark of the Covenant was a different beast, but had similar instructions. Basically once the items were placed and sealed in the Ark it became as if it was the face of God. "You cannot look upon the true face of God and not perish." (Reference: Exodus 33:20). The same went for touching it.

🤠👍 I feel the need to warn both of you that the next film in the series (Temple Of Doom) is easily the most gruesome of all of them. There's a banquet scene in the middle that makes even hard-core horror movie buffs queasy. 🤢 If you're interested in seeing a Spielberg film that is very much in the same vein as this series, only without any of the more gruesome elements, check out "The Adventures Of Tintin" (2011). You've got a good channel. 😎

The really crazy thing is that hitler really was very much into the occult and mythology. There was a significant nazi force that had one task, to research and locate these fantastical objects, the ark of the covenant, the holy grail, the spear of destiny, the fountain of youth and many others. When it comes down to it, it was all about consolidation of power. Ironically, or not, depending on how you look at it, consolidation of power was the exact same reason why the Americans were interested in finding those same things. Even Winston Churchill dedicated part of the ministry of intelligence to finding them.
Considering the existence of the shroud of Turin, the dead sea scrolls and the crown of thorns in the real world, this tells me that at least some of them are really real and are out there somewhere, maybe already in the wrong hands. But I ask you this, in this world, as screwed up as it is, whose hands would be the right hands?

Um, no. In the movie, the Americans do not have the same goals... they obviously have no desire to exploit the object, just to make sure the enemy doesn't have it. So, that would be a false comparison, right? Right.
As for the rest, now you're just being silly... The shroud nonsense was debunked in the '80s! The fact that famous dignitaries from the past believed in whatever, has no bearing on whether a thing is real or true. Taking any of it as fact without sufficient justification is irrational.

@@robertcartier5088 wow. Amazing how little that had to do with anything I said. My first point is based in fact. why would 4 or more major world powers be looking for mythical objects? If there was nothing there, they wouldn't all be looking just because someone else was.
As to intentions, the allies did atrocious things, too. You should Google the firebombing of dresden or look up what America did with the atomic bomb. If you don't think they would hesitate to use divine weapons, then you are a fool. The allies wanted that stuff for the same reasons as the axis, to use against the enemy.
My second point only speculated at the possibility that some of those things exist.

When in the presence of God you close your eyes. Notice how the dead Germans were bowed towards the ark, then were sent up to heaven for judgement and suddenly rejected to hell? The ark in real life couldn’t be touched. It likely had a strong electrical static charge from the wool that covered it that could stop your heart.
