One of Waterworld's strongest points is that the James Newton-Howard music absolutely KICKS ASS! Every moment of the music gives this movie extra feeling and energy.

Say all you want. Whenever I'm watching Waterworld, I'm having fun.
Never revealed, it's implied that the film takes place in the year 2500.
The movie suffered a lot of production problems, as most of the actors nearly drowned doing their own underwater stunts.
The movie was made on a $175 million dollar budget, and it grossed $260 million dollars at the box office.
Dennis Hopper said in an interview that the executives at Universal thought it was a box office bomb, but he said they shot themselves in the foot, as they put a lot of effort to make this movie happen.
Damn I miss the blockbusters of the 90s. Nothing about Water World is “terrible.” This is a fantastic adventure film from a much better era of Hollywood.
Its not terrible, but its still not a 'good' by movie standards, its the perfect example of a folly. Way to ambitious for the time and tech, and finances with the sort of issues only movies like this can throw up during production.
That being said, the effort they put into sets and the action pieces was commendable... ill give them that, even though I find the film meh.
I think the oil man probably summed up the last day of filming of this movie for the crew and cast... "Oh thank god!"
31:28, it's revealed in the Director's Cut, Dryland is the top of the highest peak in the world: Mt. Everest.
The extended TV cut reveals that the island is actually the peak of Mt Everest. That means that there are tropical plants growing at 29,000 feet.
yeah not sure how that is supposed to work lol, even if it was hot enough to melt all ice on the planet, it wouldnt for starters go THAT high, and it wouldnt be hot enough to get the tops of the Himalayas to a habitable condition, not to mention if the water is that high the entire planet would be damn cold at that altitude (would the atmosphere spread out but still be thinner, or would it compensate)... its one of those movies if you think about it to much it collapses even quicker than it already tends to.

Fun Fact: The massive floating Atoll set that much of the movie takes place on cost roughly $22 million to create. The structure was one-quarter of a mile in circumference and weighed over 1,000 tons (2 million pounds). Yet, neither the massive atoll nor the 30 or so boats featured in the film came equipped with bathrooms. Filming had to be stopped for people to be transported to a nearby ship to use the bathroom. The gigantic Atoll set required every piece of steel in Hawaii and more to be flown in from California. While this cost a fortune, Waterworld injected roughly $35 million to the local Hawaiian economy.
If you notice at the beginning of the movie he waters his tomato plant, which is just beginning to sprout before diving in the water, when he surfaces the plant is full grown. Indicating that his dive lasted several weeks.
As a "Muto Gill Man," that would be no time at all.;)

He waters his lime tree which already had fully grown limes on it before he dives. He doesn't get the tomato plant until he gets to the atoll....

I like this movie and I'm glad someone has finally reacted to it. Now, as to Costner's character leaving at the end was (I feel) that he was so accustom to the ocean and being an outcast because of his gills he couldn't stay enough though he cared about Enola. The land itself was the top of Mt. Everest which in the longer director's cut you see Helen and Enola find a memorial plaque as they watch the Mariner leave.
4:12, this floating city was a massive undertaking, and no, its not based on a book. The actor's name is Kevin Costner. He started and directed the epic western, Dances With Wolves, which won 7 Oscars including Best Picture

Their ship is the Exxon Valdez, Jen; the infamous oil tanker that ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, spilling 11 million gallons of oil and creating an environmental catastrophe.
My favorite Kevin Costner movie is... 1993 A Perfect World, directed by Clint Eastwood what a movie!
Fun Fact: You're correct, Jen, in that minimal CGI was used in the making of Waterworld. However, Kevin Costner reportedly did have the visual effects team digitally erase his receding hairline in the movie, which was quite expensive to do in 1995. lol

This movie was in the news all the time for different reasons, it was a great time.
The movie made its money contrary to the legend, it took time, but it did.

Ah, this one has a very special place in my heart -- not because any of the characters are particularly likable, but because the idea of living in, on, and from the ocean has always been one of my particular fantasies. I mentioned this once to a friend, as we watched "Cabin Boy" (Y'all remember the bit with the swimming lady?), and he said, "Dude, you seriously need to see Waterworld, then."
The screenwriter of the film originally pitched the film to Roger Corman. When Corman heard the plot he said "are you crazy? That will cost $5 million".
Fun Fact: Steven Spielberg actually warned Kevin Costner against filming Waterworld entirely on location at sea, following his own bad experiences filming Jaws twenty years earlier.
He should have taken that advice lol
Finally!!! Yes!!! This is one of those big movies that a must to watch because of the utter amazing silliness and tremendous story behind its creation. Along with Cutthroat Island.
If you like this movie, I'd highly recommend "The Postman" another big budget bomb and Kevin Costner post apocalyptic movie.

Kevin Costner's boat in Waterworld is actually a "trimaran." Two versions were built, a relatively standard racing trimaran for distance shots, and an effects-laden transforming trimaran for closeup shots.
Another futuristic Kevin Costner movie, definitely taking place in a dystopia society, was The Postman.
Just like in this one, where he was simply known as the Mariner, in the other movie he was just the Postman.
Fun Fact: The Smoker airplane pilot was played by a young Jack Black, long before he became famous.

This is one of my guilty pleasures. The Extended edition of this movie is so nice.
I know one method to not get water up your nose when you go under, blowing air out. But you couldn't stay under very long doing that. The other method of somehow creating pressure I couldn't figure out, and I used to love swimming for fun. I mention this because the little girl who couldn't swim somehow learned very fast how to do it, we don't see her holding her nose when he's teaching her to swim. And the woman can. I can't imagine breathing air through your mouth would work without something holding the nose closed (during the "breathing for both of them" scene).

The ocean was digitally added in some scenes. The part where Dennis Hopper is throwing the spam and cigarettes at the crowd in particular. The tanker deck was a set and the ocean added in later.

TBH I have always enjoyed this movie, including Kevin Costner's character and the way he portrayed him (not fully human, not socialized at all). I have always thought that island was the top of Mt. Everest.

The 'Smokers' villain concept also took hold in Hollywood around the same time culture pushed for anti-smoking campaigns. For instance, I remember being on an international flight in 1996 where there was a literal 'smoking section', not that the 2nd hand smoke didn't filter throughout the whole cabin. And I recall talking to my uncle about it, who told me US continental flights still had smoking in the mid to late 80s, but obviously that doesn't exist anymore.
He actually never tried to find dry land he do it for the girl and the woman😃

The island would have been the highest point on earth, Mount Everest and the Himalayas. The little city where he first meet the girl and woman, sank and had to be rebuilt. This was the most expensive film at the time and was a bomb at the theater. The oil tanker was the Exxon Valdez which had run around in the '80s or '90s and covered a good area in Alaska in oil, huge disaster.
The Waterworld stunt show attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood is loads more popular than this movie ever was. Funny enough. And it's still there to this day!
This film is an absolute marvel of film making, terrific, unfairly maligned movie.

They filmed the movie in Hawai'i. Jen's observations were dead-on correct; it was expensive ($175 Million) and difficult to shoot, and yup they were trying to film Mad Max on water. I'm from Hawai'i and I remember there were tons of reports of problems with the filming, cast and crew issues, delays, equipment failures, environmental problems, etc. and it went WAAAY over budget into one of, if not the most expensive movies ever. Almost everything was practical, built and filmed on the open sea.
It was panned by critics when it was released and was a box office dud. I personally thought the movie was fine, not great but not horrible 🤷♂️

Waterworks cost $175 million to make (the biggest budget ever at its time) but with advertising it cost closer to $235 million while making $264 million (which is not profitable for the studio as it can be estime that the theatres kept about half of the box office; as they usually do). Water world became profitable only once it went to video and tv, but it had been push as THE hit movie of 1995 that was going to break box office records;and did anything but that. It came in 10th in the US that year, way behind other movies like Batman Returns, Apollo 13, Toy Story, Die Hard: With A Vengeance and Golden Eye (Even the sequel to Ace Ventura did better than it!) So it was a flop because expectations were too high (and financially unrealistic) plus, virtually no one liked the story and cinematography: You were right to call it “Mad Max on Water” ad that is exactly what the pitch of the movie was initially.
This movie really shows how Costner’s ego started to get the better of him, almost to William Shatner Star Trek 5 levels. I like both actors but sometimes a swelled head really shows. I think this movie and “The Postman” were both massive bombs.
I always enjoyed "The Postman" too, though it too isn't a popular flick.
Universal Studios had a live show attraction they designed after this movie came out.
I don't know if you recognized the pilot who spotted the Marinrer's boat in one of the earlier scenes. It was Jack Black from Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level.
At the time Kevin Kostner and Mel Gibson were basically rivals for being the top box office draws and this was definitely Kostners attempt to compete with Gibsons Mad Max.
A mirrors' main component woulds be glass, and that's made from sand. So, unless there's salvage, a mirror would be a mystery

You pretty much nailed it with the ‘Mad Max on water’ assessment. Hollywood’s always been notoriously bereft of original ideas. Big studio execs will always throw a boatload (pun intended) of money at dubious concepts.
They're not bereft of new ideas, there are plenty of new ideas.
But the execs are *scared* of new ideas - because they might fail. Better to go with something that worked before because it stands a better chance of not losing money. ("Not losing" not "making".)
Once you understand this, Hollywood makes perfect sense.
Great reaction. This is one of three famous box office disasters of the 90s. The other one is Cutthroat Island and The 13th Warrior. All good movies in my opinion.
Would love to see Jen react to both Cutthroat Island and 13th Warrior, although she should watch Beowulf before 13th Warrior.
Since "Waterworld" was filmed locally, I found this movie to be OK. I don't/didn't see the "Kevin's Gate" thing applying to this very interesting production. Bottom line, this production spawned a successful Universal Studios attraction. Over the years, my "Mad Max at Sea" take on "Waterworld" is right on the money. "This looks very expensive"... you have no idea, 175$million which at the time was off the charts in terms of a movies cost to produce, especially given how little it made back. Given Independence Day was only 75$million a year latter shows just how over budget it ballooned.
A bit goofy, but there's a lot of fun world building in this monstrosity of a post-apocalyptic epic.
And hair would be used for rope, fyi. Without livestock or fibrous plants, cordage would be hard to come by in Waterworld, and good rope is essential for sailing.

Professional surfer Laird Hamilton was Kevin Costner's stunt double for many water scenes. Hamilton commuted to the set via jet ski.
Kevin Costner was on the set for 157 days, working 6 days a week. At one point, he nearly died when he got caught in a squall while tied to the mast of his trimaran.
Just when you thought the production of Waterworld didn't have enough trouble, Jen, composer Mark Isham's score - which was not recorded for approximately 25 percent of the film and had only demos completed - was reportedly rejected by Costner because it was "too ethnic and bleak", contrasting with the film's futuristic and adventurous tone. Isham offered to try again but was not given the chance. James Newton Howard was brought in to write the new score. Joss Whedon flew out to the set to do last minute script rewrites and later described it as "seven weeks of hell"; the work boiled down to editing in Costner's ideas without alteration.
Fun Fact:Jack Black was the Smoker Skyboat Gunner,it was one of his first films.Same with Jeanne Triplehorn(Helen) and Tina Majorino(Enola), the former went on to several Lifetime TV Films and the latter went on to ABC Family and Hallmark TV films including a 1999 adaptation of "Alice in Wonderland" where she starred as the titular character in her early teens.

It bankrupted the studio. It set Costner’s Career back a decade. He got the tremendous budget because of the success of dancing with wolves and went on to make two bombs in a row this in the postman both which cost a fortune
Hair (and finger & toe nails) are made of protein. In a situation of great scarcity, any protein is preferable to starvation. I'm not sure if that's his main motivation, but may be a factor in cutting theirs off.

they made that massive Atol set... then a hurricane came through and destroyed it... and they had too rebuild it... one of the MANY production problems in this movie lol ugh can't even imagine!

great movie.. movie was in 1995 CGI was totally around and some of it was used in the movie . Late 80s early 90,s was when they first started using CGI more
The mounting problems (for what was clearly going to be “the Wet Postman”) and budget became so notorious in the press, the producer issued what has now become known as "a Waterworld letter" to the fans and analysts:
When you see the producer of a troubled movie say "Sure, we've had problems, but we're back at work, and despite the mean rumors by the press and Internet, you'll be sorry when we're a smash hit next summer!"...you know the movie you're going to get.
Waterworld... a 2 hour and 15 minute movie that somehow feels at least twice as long.

Dennis Hopper passed on in 2010. He did have an amazing career.
