I definitely judge people by their appearance and the way they carry themselves. Walking outside in sleepwear, bonnets, unbrushed hair, body odor etc DOES say a lot about a person’s self esteem and character. I prefer to always be as polished as I can. Some type of jewelry is a personal must. When you look good, you feel good🥰

Agree. And when will women stop wearing workout clothes all day - particularly leggings so tight that we're forced to see every detail of their backside. Yuck. What happened to proper adult clothing?

    • @AD-wm9if
      @AD-wm9if ปีที่แล้ว +4

I always wear the same jewelry to simplify this. And it's small enough that I never have to take it off. I know some people may have a different style so it may not work for them, but i went for high clarity diamonds with 18k gold in classic cuts to streamline the accessorizing.

It's absolutely true but while it shouldn't matter what we look like, being put together in no way has to be expensive. I also look at this from the etiquette standpoint. Really what we're doing when we take the time to look put together is showing respect for others.

It’s amazing you said this because one of the biggest trends this year is the beat up luxury bag and it made me so angry. First, the fact that people are so hyper focused on having/saying they have a particular bag that they are willing to buy one that is beat to oblivion is just terrible! Secondly, oh my goodness, please don’t spend your money on beat up bags! Just wait and save and get one that is new or in great condition.

We ALL judge people by their appearance. Sometimes that’s all the information we have to make certain assumptions. I think how you present yourself is a personal decision, and you should do so knowing people will form opinions based on what you present. If you don’t care and make little effort, don’t be surprised when you aren’t taken seriously or may be overlooked. You don’t have to be flashy or runway ready, just presentable. You’ll feel better and have confidence when you look good.

Yes I know what you're talking about. There are also some implications. If a person is not able to take care of oneself and groom oneself, they are probably struggling with stress, mental health, or money. If the girl in the experiment looked poor or like she had a problem, people didn't want to help, because they thought that would encourage her to come beg next time. But if she looked well-off, like it was really just a one-off thing, they were more comfortable to help.
I have also some experience from this unfortunately. I used to struggle with deppression and at the time, I didn't have the energy to go shopping so when my jeans broke, I would just wear my old sweat pants all the time. I felt like putting up an outfit in the morning took out all my mental energy of the day. Sometimes even showering and washing my hair was a huge task, that I would try to put off. People didn't bother me, they sort of left me alone. However afterwards, I heard that some people had talked ill behind my back at my school about my clothes.
Whereas, sometimes when I would feel more refreshed, and put on heels, maybe even makeup, and have freshly clean and brushed hair, people would be kinder to me than usual; even cashiers at grocery stores would smile at me more.
I think 'scruffy' people must look scarier, that's why people are reserved. Other than that, it must be classism. People who haven't experienced being in the scruffy position don't know that it could happen to anyone, and they're not so different.

Excellent point. I'm currently dealing with an injury that makes it more difficult to do basic stuff, and there are days when I just can't deal with all of it. Fortunately, this is temporary and after surgery in April, I'm hoping to be back to my old self. But what about someone who struggles with an ongoing issue like you mentioned?

Ps: I totally get what you mean- looking put together does take time and effort and sometimes we're just not in the right place to do those things. I had a surgery done 2 months ago and I was in bed a lot of the time. Looking nice was the last thing I could care about xx

Growing up, I remember my mom always getting dressed better, putting on some makeup and doing her hair to go to the grocery store. Now it's anything goes, and I honestly do think this lax behavior has contributed a bit to some of the crazy behaviors we see in public these days. We don't always have to look perfect, but at least put forth an effort to look neat and tidy when out and about. I know I feel better about myself when my appearance is good. And inevitably, that one day I don't take the time, I'm going to run into a million people I know! LOL

Thank you Eileen for yet another thoughtful video. I honestly do not understand people who claim online we should not judge a book by its cover. They come across as very hypocritical and 'holier than thou'. These sort of statements never hold up in real life. Do you really not mind dealing with dishevelled, stinky, rude, loud, impolite and dirty people? You really do not mind keeping that sort of company? You wouldn't mind exposing your children to that kind of people? Being clean, wearing presentable clothes, taking care of your teeth, skin, hair and hands costs next to nothing. There is no excuse.

What you say always makes such sense & if followed, one can begin to form Values for the Right Things in Life! When one gets on the path of Wisdom, Peace follows! If we are not out constantly shopping, shopping, shopping, for "Things" tht don't satisfy, not only are we practicing Wisdom & Financial Sense, but we can use that time to Relax, Reflect & Rejuvenate ourselves! Bc as you said, taking Care of Oneself is necessary for Good Health & Longevity! It's better to make Good Choices to Direct our Lives than to just Endure what Life hands us!

Hi Eileen, I live in New York City and I once did the experiment! It was about 10 years ago. I like Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorfs so I did my test at both of those on the same day, it’s a short walk from one to the other. I went on a Saturday because I was off work that day. My hair was kind of frizzy, I had no makeup or even lip gloss on, and a really bad outfit! I swear to you I couldn’t get a sales person to help me at either store! Nobody would go near me. But the following Saturday I went more like how ( I hope) I usually look and dress. Nice outfit, hair blown dry, makeup. I had salespeople crawling all over me! People do look. People do notice. Life is hard enough. Why make it harder for ourselves by presenting ourselves to the world looking scruffy? I won’t do that again.

It is about humans communication and perception. Humans don’t exchange only by words. So, judging a book by it’s cover might not be the most accurate way of know someone but it’s the only one way we have when we don’t have way to know someone personally. Sometimes it’s a question of safety. I don’t equate the concept with negative.

TBH I think your aesthetic is classy, possibly wealthy, elegant and chic! But it isn't due to your exact items; it's down to your demeanor and then the lines of your clothes, bags and shoes. I think someone of fewer means could have this aesthetic without real designer goods. Since you can afford them and feel good using them, I think it's great you use the designer goods; but not necessary.

I believe the environment and what people are used to seeing also plays a part. For example, Singapore is highly urbanised, so you can expect to see smartly dressed people, but due to the hot weather, our national uniform is actually the t-shirt, shorts and sandals lol. And when it comes to makeup, we are also quite lax compared to some other Asian countries. So I believe the social experiment will have different results if carried out out here 😅

It just goes to show what I've been saying for ages. In the infinite universe we are probably the most primitive species. Personally I always try to defy expectations. Going out? Never heels or make up. Jeans and tshirt? Heels and make up. Even as a young woman I'd never conform to social expectations and I truly belive I've never judged people by appearances. It doesn't matter what you look like and what you wear, it's who you are as a human that makes you my friend. The words that come out of your mouth matter, not how 'frumpy' or 'put together' you look. That being said I do expect humans to respect themselves and others and not to smell to strongly or show their intimate parts too much🤣
