The Puddle Jumper is one of the best...(if not the best) design in Stargate. It has been given a great deal of thought by the Illustrative artist involved. It's size is the only ship that is undisputed. It's drive pods deploy properly without intruding on the cabin. The detail of the craft inside and out is most impressive. What I noticed for the first time is that apparently the early in the series the Puddle Jumper couldn't take one hit from a wraith dart (I recall the puddle jumper attempting to intercept a dart scouting Atlantis) and other times it can take a drone strike. I'll have to do more research because this implies the drone is far weaker than a wraith dart weapon
@saquist the jumper getting shot and destroyed by the wraith dart did not have a shield. The jumper that got hit by the drones had a shield. A jumper without the shield is not that durable
@@SCI-FI-NERD-DRMCK4Y I was about to say the same thing. It predominantly relies on its stealth, a ship that small just doesn't have the power storage to be tanking hits (unless you want to stuff a very hard to come by ZPM in it). The island prisoner's primitive artillery took one down that one time.
What annoyed me about the design was that it wasn't armed with other weapons like beam/plasma cannons. The Atlantis Expedition could had added Goa'uld Staff Weapons or wraith dart's blasters. IMO it's likely that there's an armed version of this and maybe something similar to the wraith's culling beam that had been captured by the Wraith and copied it into the Wraith Darts.
They were originally made at the same time as the Destiny style Puddle Jumpers. They definitely still used the other design for some time, too, as the Fenris used one to break into Atlantis to kidnap Daniel Jackson and Rodney McKay. They were also using the exosuits found on Destiny later.
Great video about the Puddle Jumper, can't wait for the Wraith, Asgard and Goa'uld Ships in the future. Speaking of future videos, ever thought of doing one about the ships from Farscape, like the Peacekeeper Command Carrier and Scarran Dreadnought?

I have always been fond of the puddle jumpers and the interesting things they were used for. I also would have liked to see little ones that only carried one or two people. Maybe somewhat spherical or hover bike or cone shaped. Older ones on the Destiny would have been cool. And they could have been stored under the floor or above the ceiling in Destiny's gate room hidden until a later season. And of course I would have liked to see Colm Meaney inside one trying to fix it in an episode reminding us of one of the "mess with O'Brien" style episodes of DS9. Could have been fun. These things were just immediately impressive!
Kinda wish we saw more Tauri customization. Like since they had a drone shortage they replace them with rockets or guns. Or specialize them, like a first aid jumper or a command jumper. Personally, I always thought they'd make cool mobile home conversions. Imagine they found a crashed one that some lone ancient survivor tricked out for personal use.
The term "puddle jumper" refers to a short range private aircraft, usually flown over bodies of water. Typically, either an area which has a lot of lakes or between islands, such as in the Caribbean. Mainly used as shuttle flights for islands without international airports where large planes can't land

Something that still bothers me is we never really learned what the other power sources were other than ZPM and the naquida generators they brought from Milky Way. The ZPM were apparently impossible to recreate and we don't know what the other sources were. There had to be something else that could power the jumpers for long flights, weapons and shields and if they were just batteries, it has to be some amazing technology. How did those get charged? Another thing that bugs me is it seemed like they couldn't recreate or build new drones which you would think would be a pretty important thing once they found the armory or wherever the weapons were maintained in Atlantis. They should have had a whole city of engineers in Atlantis learning everything they could. I know it's just a tv show but there are so many questions.
@Thaleios it probably beyond are understanding it works and they leave it along but yh I agree need more engineers looking at the tech and reverse engineering it
I am pretty furious, that Tauri did not try to reverse-engineer the puddlejumper. Human version would be 3 - 4 times longer than lantean Pj and 100% tauri-made, either using tauri version of drones, or HEAPS of rockets and railguns. Inbuild basic hyperdrive. Instead of FOLDABLE engine pods, the jumper would have side-doors as addition to the backdoors and the last third of the spaceship would separate and slide to the front (to reveal the backdoor and extra engines, although most of its engines would be on the back third of the craft (possibly even the hyperdrive pods). Tauri PJ is supposed to be wery modular and flexible (possibility to switch modules between missions on the base, according expected needs of the mission). Troop transport specific modules, logistic vesel specific modules - material transport, buidling construction etc, field hospital specific modules, anti-fighter specialized module, heavy weaponry module, Starfighter support module (rearm, refuel and resupply capabilities, even to switch the pilots and let them rest a moment) SG team support module (being flying home-base of SG team). Could be extremely ussefull in Pegasus, as technologicaly scalable payment for advanced enough, cooperating forces (like Genii and Travelers). Genii would get version witouth hyperengine, with rockets and canons as armament and no invisibility shield. With a need to visit every 2 years or so for re-charging their starship(s). Travelers are advanced enough to get the whole package, but they need more the hulls themselves than the advanced technology, to simply spread, feed and multiply their people. AND it would let Atlantis with permanent FTL capable spaceship 24-7 if necessary - at least capable to move accross the Pegasus, because if the speed of hyperengine is not enough, the PJ can use the closest gate and than hyperjump from there, insteand of the oposite side of galaxy. When the intergalatic bridge was funcitoning, it would allow steady transfer of strong space-navy military powers from Earth to Pegasus and back if needed. Extreme higlight of those tauri made puddlejumpers would be flexibility and numbers. Only 3 things the jumpers can not do are 1) Gigantic spacefight impact on par with 304 (although in higher numbers and taking risk of possibly loosing one or few in exchange of destroying enemy capital ship, the chances are not bad) 2) Transport of spacey things or big number of people - Even the troop transport can transport tops 50 people. 3) Flight between galaxies on their own. Although it is possible to transport up to 6 tauri-made PJs in one fighterbay (i.e. tops 12 per 1 ride) AND we are not yet mentioning the possibility to clamp some jumpers from the outside side of the hull with no crew, nor no crew access (short of asgard transporter) during the flight. Tauri made reverse-engineered drones: bigger than lanteans, obvious human build (looking a bit like one of the 2 aerspike engines of 302s, only with a railgun and 2 anti fighter or anti-subsystem rockets). Containing quite strong naquadah generator, wich can be overloaded, if the target is deemed to big to be wurneable by simple railgun slugs or anti fighter tauri misiles. Can be send through stargate, both as a self-running logistic errand (to the forces who used their drones up, to restock), or can be send through the stargate (or into the space) as attack against oponent wich is far away. Possible secondary use - assistance to disabeled spaceships (as army of mini-tug robots). When unarmed and equipped with manipulators, velders and powertools, can be used for space-cosntruction.
