@@m3nameisjosh464 You need to get yourself a euro E3 3.0Si. Better chassis than the E9, stiffer shell and a lower final drive. They didn't have an LSD but really need one. 0-60 in about 7.7, 22 secs to 100 and a 15 sec quarter - that would be better with a slipper. You'd need a pre 76 car with D Jetronic, the 3.0CSi engine.

As a fellow E34 535i owner myself, I definitely approve of this purchase! I hadn't heard of Metric Mechanic before, so this video was really interesting. In the future, I plan to take a more conventional approach to gaining more horsepower by doing a turbo build :)
Classic Daily has a stand alone ECU system called the "Turkey and Cheese" I am using it in my M30b35 swap into my E3. Uses Motronic 1.3 harness and has a lot of tuning flexibility. Thank you for your videos.
Same here, I use the turkey and cheese ECU on my own M20B25. Works fantastic, tunes with tuner studio. Has enabled me to put a wideband and individual coils also for example
@m3nameisjosh464 MM valve springs are probably stiffer and allow for more lift before coil bind than stock. I don't know if this engine has MM springs or stock. Both are double springs. If it has MM cam, I'd assume it has the spring upgrade as well. You can easily measure the cam lift and determine if it's stock or not.

Josh - Great to see you going down the M30 rabbit hole. Couple things to help. B35 is a single chain timing system. Most M30 cams don't have stamping. The M30 manual, uses a simple throttle position sensor. It's Idle, off idle, and WOT. Piggybacks from the 90s/00s suck. Ditch them as quickly as possible. I had a built NA M30, blueprinted and balanced 3.5, 93mm pistons, 9:1 CR, cam, Dinan intake, P&P, RD headers, MAF running from a Split Second piggyback and custom Autothority tuning producing 210rwhp/180tq, in 2001. With a new stand-alone, I wouldn't be surprised to see if this does more like 220rwhp/tq or maybe a little more.

@@m3nameisjosh464 You're correct. Back in the day, MM engines were up there with a Dinan S3 build. $$$. There were other companies offering similar options. I was able to get my NA build M30 from Bavarian Engine Exchange for $4000 (2001 dollars). Intake manifold, MAF, and headers are not part of either of those prices. I did my NA build, knowing I was going Forced Induction the following year. So I did a mild cam and kept the CR at 9:1. A built M30 is a great sounding and driving engine. It has great feel for a vintage engine. But $/hp is very poor when compared to a turbo build or even a crate engine like an LSX.
Check the spark plugs, wires, distributor/runner and the coil. Broken wires and a weak coil can cause the effects you noted: idles good but sputters under throttle, especially under throttle burst (short/impulse throttle actuation).
I was born in WA state and I didnt know that Euro cars werent as popular in other parts of the country. Theres always some weird gems out there that people somehow have held onto. Good find!
Very cool find, in great shape too! Stock B35s came with dual valve springs and single row timing chain. Take a look at your engine ground and inspect the Throttle position sensor, those 2 things gave me sputtery "off-on" throttle cut feeling at certain rpms before on my 535i. And check your crank position sensor, they can sometimes test good and still be faulty. The bracket that mounts it near Harmonic balancer has loosened up on me before lol, also giving me throttle similar symptoms.
Ahh I was mistaking it with older m30s! Thats weird that their site lists it as single row chain and dual valve springs as if its any different than stock??
@@m3nameisjosh464 The earlier M30s, B32 and B34 had the single valve springs. Possibly other earlier M30s as well. I'm currently running HD single valve springs from bimmerheads with their 284 cam on my b35. They say that their single HD springs are rated the same as the stock b35 dual springs. I don't recall exactly which, but I think the euro b34s came with a dual row timing chain.

I had exactly the same issue on my stock B35 as you're having with this engine, bad revving, backfires... Mine was running very rich in addition to that. I solve the revving and backfire problem by replacing the fuel pressure regulator, you should check it and try with another one and I'm pretty sure you'll solve this. thx for your videos that helped me a lot! It has a smooth idle. If there was an air leak, it would not start or should not have a smooth idle like M20s. It looks like a fuel issue because it bogges and becomes lean. Maybe you can find a stock ECU or other brands stroked ECU , delete the piggyback, and build your own standalone ECU after the engine gets into a healthy state.
Idle is indeed too smooth, the fact that it revs only by feathering the throttle make me also believe it's a fuel issue. Fpr, pump, filter (you'd be surprised), injectors
Spot on guys! On a stock car id assume its hardware issues, but this car has ford maf with stock ecu, so they dont communicate. Car gets air and no computer to add fuel. Once piggyback is working i think itll be fine
M10's and M30's went from duplex to simplex chains in 1980. 286 bhp? I'd want to see it on the dyno.......that's E28 S88 power, and an Alpina B10 did 260. Dunno! I'd start by refitting the correct air flow meter and ECU to start with just to get in running/driving. Looks a good car though.
This is sort of what im trying to build right now. Those are style 9 wheels from an e31, I run em. They're great paired with general max 245/50 r16 summer tires 91 535i I manual swapped in july Currently has stahl long tube headers with a turner chip. I got the headers from a m90 engine out of a euro e24. Its currently seized but i want to make a Frankenstein motor
Fuel supply issue, sounds like its lean popping, check pressure and flow, regulstor, blocked injectors if its sat around for a while. Theres a few plug in standalone ecu options for the motronic 1.3 these days.
100% agree. Doubt its hardware though, its definitely the lack of a tune to run the new maf. So can demands more fuel and nothing is telling it to supply it

Good candidate for supercharging bro...stroked 3.7 plus supercharger equals good power and plenty fun... otherwise it ain't gonna feel special the way it is... good purchase though 😉
Maybe delete the piggyback, put your Megasquirt PNP2 from the ITB project on this motor, back up the ITB tune and see if it runs and drives nicely on a basic map? When youre done just chuck the ITB tune back on and pull it. Might have to temporarily put some known rate injectors and stock AFM on it to establish a baseline, but if you get a good result you havent had to buy anything or go down the rabbit hole with the piggyback 😁 (Ramble) I temporarily installed a Haltech on a B35 last year after chasing a similar weird backfire/no rev/hot running issue for ages. Turned out to be a broken woodruff key on the balancer hub when i found the TDC offset that ran well wasn't the 'right' value 🫠 PS love the vids Josh! From 🇦🇺

Isn't that a Miller maf they used a mustang maf. I had one on my euro M635csi with the M88/3 motor. Just took it off and went back to stock had issues with it runnning way to rich.
My M30 has a piggyback in the same manor. The tune will be loaded on the piggyback. Unlikely it has lost it. I have a MAPECU2. Have to connect to it via serial. Meant I could eliminate the MAF etc.
@m3nameisjosh464 sometimes if they have sat for years with no power it can be a problem. I got warned about it but my car sat for 3.5 years while I was living in the US with no battery and it didn't lose it. Maybe someone cleared it for some reason though.

hey josh, that sounds exactly like my m30 if I unplug the AFM, it cant rev unless I ease into it, maybe there is something going on with that ford maf, maybe try swapping a stock m30 afm??
Hey man. If it's a really deal Metric Mechaic's engine, then it's a gem. Ok, from stock 208 hp to 286? It doesn't seem like a whole lot especially for what one has to pay. You can take the easy way out by turbo charging but then what? You blow up the motor. I guarantee you that motor will last. After all it actually did after all over a decade or so? Keeping it simpler is better. As for that whole piggy back wiring thing? Rip that sh.t off and put it back to stock. Your benefit is at least putting a chip in the stock Motronic and let it rip which was well known in the day. 👌🏽👍🏽

Lean pop 100%. You're opening the throttle plate, but without an AFM to tell the DME how much air is going in, it doesn't know it needs more fuel and it goes big lean. Getting an AFM on there would be a good start, but check out that DME harness in the E-Box - half of the wires that used to go in the connector are now either running into the glovebox or over to that rats nest of splices... woof. Decipher this disasterpiece or just find a good used M30 harness and replace? Much to consider. Good luck 🫡
From what I know about piggy backs I know from my step dad who was around at that time is the ecu that is there is stock the modified tune is all on the piggy back this is old school to me but I would assume the stock ecu has no provisions for the maff that was on the piggy back and that’s why you’re car won’t rev because it’s getting a bunch of air it doesn’t know what to do with it can’t add enough fuel fast enough with the stock ecu you might get lucky you got 3 options a stand alone but you might get lucky and there is a way to use a ms41 or have someone in Europe who might be able to tune the stock ecu to work without a piggyback they got real good at tuning older bmw stock ecu over there but what I would do first again it would be a luck thing maybe you can find a used piggy back that it’s already wierd for and you would have to find someone who still tunes it look into all of them before you make your choice you might be able to save some time and effort without having to wire the whole car
You’re totally right. Its the stock ecu unable to handle the ford maf. Im going to try and hook a computer into the piggyback and see if it comes alive

Also the S38b35 in the U.S. M6 and M5 makes only 256hp. The M88/3 in the European market only M635csi and M5 makes 286hp.

From what I know about piggy backs I know from my step dad who was around at that time is the ecu that is there is stock the modified tune is all on the piggy back this is old school to me but I would assume the stock ecu has no provisions for the maff that was on the piggy back and that’s why you’re car won’t rev because it’s getting a bunch of air it doesn’t know what to do with it can’t add enough fuel fast enough with the stock ecu you might get lucky you got 3 options a stand alone but you might get lucky and there is a way to use a ms41 or have someone in Europe who might be able to tune the stock ecu to work without a piggyback they got real good at tuning older bmw stock ecu over there but what I would do first again it would be a luck thing maybe you can find a used piggy back that it’s already wierd for and you would have to find someone who still tunes it look into all of them before you make your choice you might be able to save some time and effort without having to wire the whole car
