- I've been on the hunt for a 242 for about 3 years now. Finally one came home! This was a word of mouth, guy who knows a guy who has one hidden in his back yard. I would never have known this car was behind this house!
Thanks for checking out the channel!!

Your wife seems very understanding and supportive. Cool car!
She definitely puts up with a lot!
that car is a jewel @@DeanofMachines
When the lady asks how the oceans would look... that's a keeper 😊
@@bgee461 She's got great taste for sure!
@@uroskostic8570 You can say that again!
Wow! What a rare find! I vote for a complete restoration of this gem!
I like the way you think! I’ve been itching for a paint project…
We’re going to need to see that.
I second this idea!!!
The worst moment of the month for your wife is when you open your mouth and said "Honey, I think I like this car".. She's amazing and you are passionate.. amazing videos!
Thank you! Im lucky to have her as part of the team of life!
I've been a volvo fan for nearly 30 years but never see 242 turbo in Japan. Good to found your video. Hope you will enjoy. Cheers!
Hello there! Many years ago I lived in Kanagawa and Okinawa! Welcome to my channel, I hope you stay!
Brit here, nearly brought a 260 2 dr years ago wish I had one bad ass looking Volvo.
They are cool little cars!
My brother has a 242 with the “toy bumpers” that is equally patina’d but in a port wine red. He’s swapping a big turbo and a ton of other things.
Super cool to see such a cool barn find of a hard to find 242 variant. Hope it’s running in the next video, these are definitely worth preserving!
We have a lot of parts around here to make it a driver! Im not looking to make it incredibly fast but reliability is my ultimate goal.
The wiring is mostly non existent. Squirrels ate it all!
Plan on replacing the harness or going standalone.
@@volvosruinedmylife I'm attempting to repair the fender harnesses and will probably replace the engine harness.
Bucket list car for me. Congrats. Big win.
You and me both!! This thing has been a long time coming!
Nice! 242, Virgos, turbo, tan leather seats, power mirrors. I am not wild about the colour black.
Now I am really turning green with envy. Keep the Virgos, they suit the model.
Lots of work but it will be a satisfying ride when done.
I hope it will be a driver when I am done with it!
You found the unicorn of 240s ,
Its my very first unicorn!!
Wow, that’s a nice one! These 242 Turbos (if you can find one) sell for north of 25,000 euro (27,000 usd) in decent shape, at least where I live. Please save it, they’re becoming rarer every year.
We saved it! Its in the garage
Your neighbors are patient.
I am very thankful for them
Your neighbours must love you and your car collection 😂
I hope they do! It's a great collection!
@@DeanofMachines yeah, Volvos are special.
@@DeanofMachines surprised you haven't been reported to code inforcememt. Lol
I have a 1982 VOLVO DL with a manual transmission. I bought it new and plan to keep it until I die. It is more than a car, it is part of me.
They are very cool little cars!!
Well, the 1 thing you can say is your dedication to the marque is 2nd to none
And your S/O is right, would look awesome in black
Its getting to the point where I need to pull the tdi out of the Jeep and put a redblock in it!!
@@DeanofMachines I'm afraid being from the UK....I don't know what a redblock is 🤔
@@itsmephil2255all Volvo engine blocks of the same basic design were painted red at the factory. From the 60’s through the 90’s.
@@ShawnTheGreek ahhhhh right, that's understandable 👍
Pretty sure she said "bitchin'" 😋
Here in Portugal, if this car were restored, it would be worth a lot of money because it is rare and would be worth more if it had a manual gearbox.
That's the case here in the USA. I do have parts to make it manual.
Nice find! Congrats on finally getting a 242 and one that seems to be really complete!
This is the most expensive non running car I have ever bought!
“I’ll need to vacuum the engine bay before pressure washing”. - proceeds to pressure wash engine bay.
That part always makes me chuckle. I genuinely wanted to wait but had the equipment out ready to go so give it a quick spritz!
Yes, full paint. Maybe we can do both our 242s black at the same time.
I’m going to powder coat my Virgos bronze-ish gold, then gold pinstripe. A la John Player Special racing livery from the 1980’s. A period-correct mod.
That might be the perfect combo! I'm concerned about 15in tire sizes though :(
@@DeanofMachines That's why I went Hydra on my cars. Selection of performance tires was much better even as far back as 2004. Supposedly there's a better selection in the 205/55R15 size, though.
@@john242ti Even 15's the selection is minimal. Not everything needs 20 inch wheels!
Welcome to the 242 club!
Thank you! It's an honor to be apart of such a prestigious crowd!
nice save, can't wait to see you fix it up.
Thank you! It'll be a fun restoration for sure!
Definitely hope to see this thing at mountain meet! Especially with the oceans 😉
Fingers crossed! It'll happen!
Ohhhh good point! I'll be there again this year finally. I'd love to see this car there!
Put a coat of lacquer over it as is and get it mechanically sorted. Be a great daily. I’d love this
I like the way you think!!
Thats a sharp looking car, never seen an old 2 door turbo volvo. Nice find!
Thanks! These are considerably rare now.
nice find! there used to be a lot of 242 here in Sweden 15 years ago but now most of them have either been turned into rebar or became rally/folkrace cars that will never legally drive on the road again outside of racing(except some rally groups can legally be on the road). if it gets to the scrapyard you can't put it on the road again, it can be parted out and then have to be crushed
That's the sad reality of these cars. In the US most people do not like old Volvos so the 2 door cars were scrapped years ago.
Cool car.....I like all square body cars.....It will be interesting to see this one moving forward....😃
LOVED the broken jack comment she made!!! 🤣
Thank you! We can't wait to get it running!!
The black looks nice when wet and shiny. So when you repaint it, make it high gloss. very nice.
Basecoat clear coat all the way!
Love to see people that gives love to old volvo cars, they are nice to drive and fun to tune!
Our newest car is 14 years old! Everything we have is weird old something or other. They have much more personality!
A Classic Volvo. I’m from Sweden and I really looking forward to the next video.
Welcome to the party! We are very excited about the our new 242.
Dean,you are adicted to Volvo!😉👍
I think thats an understatement!!
I have never seen paint just fall off like that
Single stage paint thats gotten super old and baked will just rub off. The majority of the black color on the top before washing was debris and mold from years of sitting. Sort of like our silver 244, looked black on top.
It's got a snail. Hell yeah.
Raise hail praise snail!
Dude this thing is a once in a life time find! I absolutely love it!
I am VERY lucky to have the friends I do!
Imagine finding that here in sweden, worth a lot of money😊
I could only imagine!!! I would love to road trip through Sweden!
That's a rare beast in any country! I don't think I have ever seen one in the UK? Looks great though, I would do a resto and keep the original wheels on it, so its as stock. Great find!!
I wonder if anyone has “sales stats” of some sort!
Can't wait to see the next video. As a Volvo fan & a detailer ... This is right up my street 👌
More to come!
Make it two tone. Silver on black..... Nice save.
That's an interesting thought... I'll put it on the board!
The 242 looks great in grey and black 🤣
Thank you! We think so too :)
I just got my 240 turbo wagon today myself, thanks for the video!
Congrats on the turbo wagon!
Damn that thing is clean and straight under that dirt! And dry! Pretty amazing for sitting outside for however long. Always glad to see a 242 get saved! This video makes me want to work on mine!
I highly recommend it! Im learning Kjet for the first time with this one
@@DeanofMachines Nice! I'll probably never learn K-Jet lol. Mine is a bare shell with a B6304 and some ITBs waiting to go in it. My last 2 Redblocks were LH2.4 and I don't plan on owning another Redblock in the future unless it's carbureted and in an Amazon wagon lol
@@southdennismotorsports I can't lie, I love ITBs.
@@DeanofMachines meeeee tooooo. I've driven Kyle's car before and hoooo buddy is it CHOICE. The plan for my 242 is to be going enough by 2027 for the Volvo 100th anniversary. So hopefully it'll make it to mountain meet around then too!
@@southdennismotorsports I like the way that sounds!!
Nice! 242 turbos are kind of unobtainium here in sweden. They were only sold in the us so only a few has been imported back here. Real unicorns!
Its always interesting to hear that fact. You would think, of all places, Sweden would have the good ones!
@@DeanofMachines yes we have 244 and 245 turbos but not 242. Dont think they were sold in europe at all. Just usa and maybe canada.

In Portugal we had the 440 Turbo and the 480 Turbo, but from what I know, the 240 Turbo, I don't think it should be rare or unheard of.
Some countries never got it. Here in the USA they weren’t exactly rare. But they were very uncommon. Today, in 2024, most of them have rusted away and are long gone.
Found yourself a treasure there.❤️
I can definitely agree!! It will take some work but I think we can save it!
Hey Dean. What a great score! Cleaned up nicely! Looking forward to k-jet extravaganza! 😂
Im hoping to have a good experience with kjet. If not then we can rotary swap it!

This seem to be a very good one to me... No major rust... complete original car... I wish i could find one like that around here with that CIS B21FT engine.
Its taken a loooong time for me to find one I liked enough to buy. Just keep an eye out and be ready. This one came to me after another deal fell through and I was telling a friend about it. You never know!
240 Turbo great car thanks for this video
Love 240 turbos!!
Congratulations Dean, that is a super score!! Love that car!!
Thank you! What would you do? Paint it?
Definitely paint it. To find another one in that condition it’s going to be dificult. I would paint it, manual tremec conversion. And refresh turbo goodies or upgrade the turbo sistem. Definitely a dream volvo car for is entusiasts
Dean, definitely a keeper. I had an 81 just like this one. Black paint faded mainly due to over polishing and compounding before I realized the paint was being damaged. Was a 1st year Turbo, M46 w/OD, had the silver cloth interior with black carpet. Bought it new, Savanah Intl Motors, don't know if they're still in business? Kept it 20 years, around 195k miles, and like a dummy sold it in 2001. Have a silver 1984 Turbo now with 260k and would definitely keep the 82 you found, especially if the floors are clean. The trunk buckets usually rot some but can be fixed. The Virgo wheels are nice and original, I'd get them balanced and painted back to the original silver. Other areas to watch out for is rust around the front windshield. I couldn't tell from the video, but yours looked okay? Finally, I'd find an intercooler kit on Turbobricks or other Volvo sites or junk yard finds as the extra horsepower really helps. Hope the auto tragic tranny works well, my two 242s have been M46s. Please paint her and get her back on the road. This one looks to be mostly all original. Enjoy your channel!

Its an original black car believe it or not!
About time you got a real 240.
Right? This is actually the first 242 I have ever sat in.
@DeanofMachines my first volvo was a 1986 244, then I found a clean 744na that I still have. When I went to buy it the guy turned out to have a buch of old volvos. My 1982 242 glt turbo was half under a car cover in a car port. I asked him if he wanted to sell it. I had to have a turbo two door. He was like I might someday. Then 3 years later he calls Mr up and tells me it's running and for sale. Patience is always the answer.
@@volvosruinedmylife That's awesome! What a cool story. I like to think that every has that kind of luck at some point. Patience is key!

That goes well with whats planned for the red wagon :)
What the... was that car put outdoors like the day before? No volvo i ever seen have survived that nicely outdoors here in Sweden.
I’m originally from the northern USA and the climate there is similar to Sweden! Cold and snowy. Cars rust very fast and I don’t recall seeing any Volvo 242 in the 90s. They rusted sooo fast. I am in the southern USA now and cars survive much better!

@@benspencer9523 Helloo from the US! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I'm assuming the 242 is more rare there than it is here. Did you get the 242 turbo and 242gt as separate models?
@@DeanofMachines we didn't get the turbo at all Dean. Although I have seen one for sale with the correct turbo set-up that the owner had imported from Europe.
Dean, find yourself a little time and Google Robbie Francevic and or John Bowe Volvo Group A touring car. These two changed a lot of perceptions about Volvo with a " typical " Ford or General Motors fan Down Under with their extraordinary feats in the flying brick. I know, as I was a Holden fan as a kid, probably only because my father had a succession of Holden taxis. To this day, some 40 years later I'd still happily own one but due to their scarcity down here they are not cheap. Currently on our biggest National car selling site there are only two for sale.
