On morning drive we had a close encouter with young elephant Mabula. This is in the Thula Thula private game reserve of famous elephant whisperer Lawrence Anthony.
My Compliments to the lot of you - Driver for reversing at pace in tricky situation, Guide for retaining his sense of humour, calmness and seat, the Cameraman for holding the bloody camera steady and not losing the subject, and everybody else for not squealing etc. Result from a fabulous sighting - a tremendous sequence for us all to enjoy. Thanks so much.
This thick north KZN bush and the narrow tracks with no possibility of turning around is not easy when faced by a big bull. I have concerns however that by backing out always as there is no real alternative, encourages vehicle pursuing behaviour by big bulls.I did not see any real aggression by Mabula, or charge mock or real. Is Mabula a trans-located animal? Or locally bred and born? that also makes a difference . So too the history of human interactions. Just do not know what to make of this whole encounter. Final analysis, You did well staff .

I don't think Mabula was charging.
After reading this account in 'The Last Rhinos', I searched for this video. My God! This was close!
Mabula is just full of bull. A reverse charge trunk-call would have been the best solution here. 😌
