I've read that the safest way to approach an elephant is to dart towards it erratically. That way he knows you're friendly.

Ummm . . . No. Whilst even a male lion will react to that, a bull in musth is totally unpredictable. I've seen bulls display unrelenting aggression and still others familiar to us show an almost apologetic and demure demeanor. Bottom line - always have a good escape plan.
A Bull in musth is, obviously, the last Elephant you want to see up close. Sometimes they'll mock charge. For the most part, they'll flip a Land Rover and keep smashing it until satisfied.
"Come on, Matt, we're going to be buddies. Aren't we?" As you beat a hasty.. and wise..retreat. Live to film another day

This is a massive bull with fully preserved tusk , amazing and extremely rare sight .
The sound that bull makes at 1:42 is on par with a male lion's roar for "oh fuck" factor IMO.

I thought the other way around, that ears out + making itself look bigger means a mock charge. When the ears come in and it's all about the speed you're probably in trouble...
