It would be super funny if Marvel Rivals just had a mode where it’s just MVC but just the Rivals roster, in the same engine and art style on the same maps.
Halo Inifinte was one of the first live-service games (I think) that had the "Battlepass doesn't expire" feature, and as shitty as that games launch was i will always be greatful to it for introducing such a common sense system into the live service slop fest.
And as someone who never got into live service but likes Halo, the fact that wasn’t how those things work and that they actually expire in other games when they’re so grindy and awful is ridiculous.
Though a little more niche, "Super Animal Royale" uses this system of battle passes not expiring. Cosmetics from the earliest builds are still available to date.
Rivals did what Concord didn't, by offering something new and compelling to stand out from the crowd, both aesthetically and mechanically. Being free and having a massive IP attached sure helps too.

The Black Widow thing was pretty funny. It’s funny for how wrong Mike Ybarra is. I mean people will point out how Natasha Romanova is from the ‘60s, which is true, (there’s even an older pre-Marvel being named Marvel Black Widow) and even taking into account that that old Black Widow doesn’t look like Widowmaker, the elements that make up Widowmakers look existed in designs for Black Widow and her sister Yelena Belova long before Overwatch was a game. Like Widowmaker is basically a take on Yelena Belova from the 2009 Thunderbolts comics But, the thing that makes it really funny is that the majority of the original batch of Overwatch characters were just ripoffs of characters from Anarchy Reigns. The where such knockoffs of Anarchy Reigns characters I’m sure there still has been an Anarchy Reigns 2 post the popularity Overwatch enjoyed for years...basically the popularity it had until it was rebranded as Overwatch 2.
@@Dracobyte At that point, why not say that Quake is the Hydrox? Why not Doom? When so many games take inspiration from so many others, the lineage never ends. The trends change, but the line of heritage persists.
Yeah, I def needs it to be sanded down. Spiderman has like 7 moves. Meanwhile Psylocke is an assassin that has like 3, moves slower than The Hulk, and while being a Genji clone doesn't have a double jump or wall climb. They gave her the invis, but i'd rather the movement. Just put the butterflies under her feet, it's fine. Talking movement. A lot of characters feel slow. Feels like I should be playing a game about super heroes going grocery shopping. Rather than going to have an epic fight. I'm sure once everything is smoothed out, it'll be fine.
Give her Iron Fist's triple jump and replace her Shurikens for melee sword strikes that deal actual damage, and I will never play a different character ever again.
The reason this game is so good is it is clearly made out of Spite and anger. People forget that NetEase had a very big very public spat with Blizzard and probably still harbored that anger. Now they had a chance to usurp blizzard's hero shooter with one of their own and they probably wanted to make sure they did this right. This is NetEase's Shrek.
NetEase and Blizzard renegotiated the licensing rights for WoW et al almost immediately after the MS acquisition was finalized and Kotick was pushed out. So, in China, they publish both Rivals and Overwatch.
my only umbrage with the game is that it keeps me jammed at 99% But other than that, it's genuinely really clean and it gives me that tinge of excitement of "I wanna play the neat heroes!"
The art in this game is good the same way a businessman in his business suit is well dressed. It's technically impressive, but it feels like a dark pattern gacha and not like a Sunday afternoon comic.
The Spiderman-Iron Fist players comparison is funny as fuck yet so accurate. Same can be applied with, say, Hela, you won't be seeing many gooners playing Hela because they're playing Squirrel Girl or Psylocke, people playing Hela are playing her because *they want to banish you to the Shadow Realm.*
Really enjoying Marvel Rivals, and it's a great alternative to the now soulless greedy corpo mess that is Overwatch. Although, Scarlet Witch is crazy broken. Almost everyone, myself included can easily get a 30 killstreak with her through little to no effort, it's actually crazy.
As someone who both adores comic books & is a sweaty no life loser who is under 25 this game was designed specifically for me & dorks like me. I am here to play as Star-Lord & I am here to climb ranked. You got me good, NetEase, you got me.
Haven't played enough to form an opinion. One major complaint though is you can't seem to rebind controller buttons, what this means is I can't use ultimates because the left stick press (L3) on the second hand controller I bought a few months ago straight up doesn't work. Time to learn to play on keyboard I guess.
Tying progression in a multiplayer game not just to playing a very specific way, but relying on other players will always be a miserable experience. Halo Infinite scrapped their xp challenges entirely a few months in.
Wait the “closest we will get to a massive action multiplayer” I know FOR HONOR is not exactly mainstream but come on! it exists for better or for worse!!!!
The thing you pay money for doesn't arbitrarily become unavailable if you don't unlock it fast enough? Gosh, that's innovative. Maybe in the future they'll have the technology to make Halo Reach, where you can unlock specific things you want with currency you get by playing the game. Maybe one day some genius Carmack-esque programmer will figure out a way to price things in real currencies instead of Whimsy Coins that can only be obtained in inconvenient quantities. Exciting times.
I'm not sure if Pat's statement of we'll never see a game like that again is really true. Naraka was pretty damn close to character action battle royale
Also like widowmaker and black widow play really differently with black widow having her batons as a melee option for close encounters her abilities being about getting in close and nocking people up and her ult being a completely different move its not even that much of a comparison besides “woman sniper”
evidently people who have played both back to back have been calling Black Widow better Widow-Maker. basically she is incapable of preforming one shot kills, which makes her much more of a support unit as she has to rely on her allies for damaging them first of afterwords.
I finally gave in and tried the game yesterday, and I have four observations: 1. Literally no one playing this game has an answer for a Magik or Iron Fist who attempts to left click while fusing with their model 2. Anyone who says they're good at controlling Spider-Man or Venom's web swinging is lying 3. It's been a long time since I've seen such an enormous gap between the amount of effort put into a character's alternate skin and the amount people actually want to play that character (Luna Snow) 4. I know Peni Parker is a very strong character, but she comes with the debuff of having some of the ugliest costumes I've seen in a while
I wonder if Rivals will actually beat OW2 or if its gonna be like when a new WoW killer reelased every few months and most of them are shut down and WoW is still #1 Gonna be neat to see how things develop
It depends how they handle updates. Rivals has a lot of the same core problems that early OW had, and is currently fairly janky. It's also even more hectic and visually cluttered due to the addition of melee heroes, the map design, and heroes generally having more abilities. That was always a big obstacle to OW developing as an esport, and Rivals doesn't seem to have any of the spectator or team clarity features that they created for OWL to combat that. Though I'd argue Blizzard's biggest mistake was investing heavily in OWL over branching out the IP, given how instantly popular the characters were, and a lot of that good will has been obliterated by monetization changes and cut features in OW2. I think if they'd put that money into a PvE campaign and some tie in media or even spinoffs, they'd be better off for it now.
StarCraft isn’t a Warhammer 40K knockoff. It’s more an Alien vs Predator knockoff. That’s one of those weird things where when you look at 40K now it’s like: Oh yeah, StarCraft totally ripped this off. But, it’s more the other way around. 40K doesn’t start looking like StarCraft until after StarCraft is huge, and pre StarCraft, Warhammer 40K doesn’t really look all that similar. StarCraft seems way more built on Alien vs Predator (and not just the movies up to that time, but the comics and toys too) and Starship Troopers The Black Widow and Widowmaker thing is totally different. For the Widowmaker thing to be similar, and for Mike Ybarra to even have a point, Black Widow would have had to never have a design that looked like Widowmaker until after the character appeared in Overwatch. But Widowmaker’s design is like a play on Black Widow designs from the ‘90s and 2000s. Black Widow’s Marvel Rivals default look seems to be a take on her costume from the Age of Ultron movie (which also predates Overwatch) with the blue of that movie costume switched to her regular red. A costume based on her Age of Ultron look is also what Capcom did for their original Black Widow costume in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Funnily, a few costumes in Marvel Rivals seem based on Capcom costumes from Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. Like Captain America’s default armor costume in Marvel Rivals seems more based on Capcom’s original Captain America costume based on his Marvel Now look than it looks like it’s based on his actual Marvel Now costume. They even gave Captain America the same alt Capcom gave him in Infinite; the Secret Wars Planet Hulk gladiator Captain America costume seemed like a weird pick in 2017 (Gladiator Captain America wasn’t even the coolest 2015 Secret Wars Captain America...Secret Wars Civil War Captain America was) its even weirder now in 2024.
Unfortunately it was really Activision's fault, for the most part, and not only with OW. They're out of the picture now but a lot of the damage has already been done, so I'm not really sure what their answer will be. I guess this is where mutual competition could elevate both games, though.
Rivals is great but 3rd person shooters don't call to me that much. Also funny enough overwatch has been a noticeably better experience since a lot of the toxic players have left for rivals😅
@@li-limandragon9287 thats not what you said. You said me preferring 1st person over 3rd person is cope. But yea overwatch currently has its lowest player base because a lot of them have been playing rivals instead so yes ow is "less" toxic currently.

It would be super funny if Marvel Rivals just had a mode where it’s just MVC but just the Rivals roster, in the same engine and art style on the same maps.
Theres a non zero chance they could have an MvC collab with capcom
“Black Widow Maker” is what they used to call me in college.
Are you a black person creating widows? Or do you only target spouses of black women?
@ Depends on the day.
Halo Inifinte was one of the first live-service games (I think) that had the "Battlepass doesn't expire" feature, and as shitty as that games launch was i will always be greatful to it for introducing such a common sense system into the live service slop fest.
Yup! The devs deserves credit for that.
I really hope the game can keep up its momentum cause I’ve needed this hero shooter itch scratched for years.
Blizzard accusing Marvel of ripping off Widowmaker is like the Monkees accusing the Beatles of ripping off Daydream Believer
Wait, they really did that? When?
@@Dracobyte Just a hypothetical analogy...
yeah but in truth their **Rivalry** is better compared with Blur vs. Oasis since ALL of their works were borrowed from other creators

The dude doesn't work for blizzard anymore. It's just pure petty ego
The virgin Concord: "The hero shooter genre is an oversaturated market."
The chad Marvel Rivals: * somehow makes an actually good hero shooter *
Rivals did what Concord didn't, by offering something new and compelling to stand out from the crowd, both aesthetically and mechanically. Being free and having a massive IP attached sure helps too.
Also, you know. Character design.
That's kind of important.
i love that woolie just has that sign right there lol

The Black Widow thing was pretty funny. It’s funny for how wrong Mike Ybarra is. I mean people will point out how Natasha Romanova is from the ‘60s, which is true, (there’s even an older pre-Marvel being named Marvel Black Widow) and even taking into account that that old Black Widow doesn’t look like Widowmaker, the elements that make up Widowmakers look existed in designs for Black Widow and her sister Yelena Belova long before Overwatch was a game. Like Widowmaker is basically a take on Yelena Belova from the 2009 Thunderbolts comics
But, the thing that makes it really funny is that the majority of the original batch of Overwatch characters were just ripoffs of characters from Anarchy Reigns. The where such knockoffs of Anarchy Reigns characters I’m sure there still has been an Anarchy Reigns 2 post the popularity Overwatch enjoyed for years...basically the popularity it had until it was rebranded as Overwatch 2.

7:32 100% true. The character that kills me all the time is Iron Fist.
Are we about to have a Oreo and hydrox situation with marvel rivals and OverWatch
But Ocerwatch is not Hydrox, that was Team Fortress Classic (the game made in Quake's engine).
@@Dracobyte At that point, why not say that Quake is the Hydrox? Why not Doom?

I need an update on this discussion, because the honeymoon is over for me.
Woolie got out the WHENS MAHVEL sign like it was a quick-use item
2:16 exactly my thoughts when I saw everybody wilin out after they first showed Squirrel Girl
Woolie just casually pulling out the most important piece of SBFP lore that is an ancient relic at this point "yeah I just had it"
The reason this game is so good is it is clearly made out of Spite and anger. People forget that NetEase had a very big very public spat with Blizzard and probably still harbored that anger. Now they had a chance to usurp blizzard's hero shooter with one of their own and they probably wanted to make sure they did this right.
This is NetEase's Shrek.
"The reason this game is so good is because it is clearly made out of spite and anger"
Like Goat Simulator
NetEase and Blizzard renegotiated the licensing rights for WoW et al almost immediately after the MS acquisition was finalized and Kotick was pushed out. So, in China, they publish both Rivals and Overwatch.
so spite is still the greatest motivator, huh
So glad Halo Infinite introduced that kind of Battlepass that never expires. Fomo sucks ass.
my only umbrage with the game is that it keeps me jammed at 99%
But other than that, it's genuinely really clean and it gives me that tinge of excitement of "I wanna play the neat heroes!"
Same brother, on top of bad performance. I've lost matches because two or three of us have gotten stuck like that until the game has already started.
@@Foostini it's all just load time brothers. Installing the game on an ssd removes the 99% problems entirely.

Thor main here, I exist Pat, I just happen to play in a completely diferent region.
They need to add a playable Sentinel to Marvel Rivals.
Not just a generic Sentinel tho, make it Nimrod or something.
And it better have a variation of the 'Chuck Norris Kick' too.
lol this is not Anarchy Reigns at all. God knows I wish it was.
Mahvel Rivals really said "when everyone's broken, no one will be"
Tying progression in a multiplayer game not just to playing a very specific way, but relying on other players will always be a miserable experience. Halo Infinite scrapped their xp challenges entirely a few months in.
Did Pat get another dog?

The thing you pay money for doesn't arbitrarily become unavailable if you don't unlock it fast enough? Gosh, that's innovative. Maybe in the future they'll have the technology to make Halo Reach, where you can unlock specific things you want with currency you get by playing the game. Maybe one day some genius Carmack-esque programmer will figure out a way to price things in real currencies instead of Whimsy Coins that can only be obtained in inconvenient quantities.

evidently people who have played both back to back have been calling Black Widow better Widow-Maker. basically she is incapable of preforming one shot kills, which makes her much more of a support unit as she has to rely on her allies for damaging them first of afterwords.
I was pulling off one kill headshots with her and Hawkeye. Problem is, without a team around you, you’re dead meat.
@@li-limandragon9287 Yeah, but... isn't that every character in the game?
Pew and Senpai are FEASTING
I finally gave in and tried the game yesterday, and I have four observations:
1. Literally no one playing this game has an answer for a Magik or Iron Fist who attempts to left click while fusing with their model
2. Anyone who says they're good at controlling Spider-Man or Venom's web swinging is lying
3. It's been a long time since I've seen such an enormous gap between the amount of effort put into a character's alternate skin and the amount people actually want to play that character (Luna Snow)
4. I know Peni Parker is a very strong character, but she comes with the debuff of having some of the ugliest costumes I've seen in a while
MAHVEL BABY
I wonder if Rivals will actually beat OW2 or if its gonna be like when a new WoW killer reelased every few months and most of them are shut down and WoW is still #1
Gonna be neat to see how things develop
StarCraft seems way more built on Alien vs Predator (and not just the movies up to that time, but the comics and toys too) and Starship Troopers
The Black Widow and Widowmaker thing is totally different.
Overwatch got caught lacking and Marvel/Netease took advantage of it and won. Its Overwatch 2 own fault that there failures.
Unfortunately it was really Activision's fault, for the most part, and not only with OW. They're out of the picture now but a lot of the damage has already been done, so I'm not really sure what their answer will be. I guess this is where mutual competition could elevate both games, though.
i thought this was a tactics game for some reason. maybe that's a different game...
You might be thinking of Midnight Suns

Rivals is great but 3rd person shooters don't call to me that much. Also funny enough overwatch has been a noticeably better experience since a lot of the toxic players have left for rivals😅
It’s waaaaaaaay more fun to move around in high speed in 3rd person than 1st person. Sounds like cope to me bro.
@@li-limandragon9287 I think rivals is great but I don't enjoy 3rd person shooters as much as 1st person and...and that's cope?...........huh?

@@li-limandragon9287 thats not what you said. You said me preferring 1st person over 3rd person is cope. But yea overwatch currently has its lowest player base because a lot of them have been playing rivals instead so yes ow is "less" toxic currently.
Kinda agree, makes me appreciate the polish in OW2 and skill expression from techincally simpler abilities like Wreaking Ball grapple vs Spiderman swinging. Not sure why this other guy is pretending going fast in 1st person isn't a well loved FPS staple throughout the years i.e doom, unreal tournament, TF2, etc.
