Right before Dr. Chilton leaves the cell, he says "clean him up and get him ready to go" to the orderly. Which suggests he was released from his restraints and allowed to shower and or change clothes. So that would have been the moment Dr. Lector stole the pen Dr. Chilton left on his bed.😉

Realistically there's no easy answer for what do when you see something shady just as the women want to get home to their family so do we. Many of us have stopped another man for being creepy or aggressive. But many men and women just stand there recording and yelling for someone else to do it due to crowd psychology. But when you're alone its even more hard to know when. Wish it was easy to know what needed attention and when we could crowd jump someone lol. Men feel fear of dying on the way home unless you have the ego to feel safe in an area you know but if its unfamiliar those types feel far less confident anyway. Women unfortunately have a different layer of fear that's not just death although (in America) that's scarily statistically more likely with someone you know already. So awareness in all life is needed it takes effort to not be afraid of everything yet be aware sadly.
PSA Just as a tip men and women please don't think men are invincible they are murdered far more than woman for a few reasons. Even if one might be there to help be ready to fight. We are often raised to help people but women saying they wont help for fear and we should feels dismissive to how risky that mindset becomes with how many men got shot or stabbed. If he goes down you still need to live. EVERYONE needs to carry something even if its a knife some people are actually IMMUNE to pepper spray don't only rely on it I tell my sister the same thing. AND FIGHT DIRTY. Eyes bones anything LIVE!
USA has so many guns that you should simply get your own by this point but learn the discipline for when to use it. Too many people whip them out for simple arguments. Of course if just faking being someones friend will save them though we all should do so.

The point of Clarice getting chastised about not checking the corners, is due to it was in HER zone. Her partner did what he was supposed to do when entering and had the main assailant covered, but Clarice endangered the mission by not fulfilling her complete responsibilities...by not checking the corner, the assailants can take her out, creating a casualty that wasn't necessary.

19:11 If you’ve ever been around a rotting, decomposing body you’ll appreciate putting some Vics or Vaseline under your nose. The chemical particles will cling to your nasal passages, and you’ll be smelling dead bodies for days/weeks. The salve helps to capture the particles and it avoids the smell. I did mortuary work and search and recovery. Bodies decompose very very fast.

My brother in law is very jumpy, and rarely watches horror movies. We convinced him to watch SoTL, with the lights off. Knowing the basement scene was coming up, I sat silently in the kitchen for half an hour so that he could forget I was there. When the basement light shut off, and Bill was about to reach his hands around the back of Clarice’s face, I snuck up behind him and timed it just right to reach my hands around his peripheral vision. Years of watching him play basketball, and I had never seen him jump that high. 🤣🤣🤣 Took him 20 minutes to calm down enough to finish the movie. I never scared him again. It was a good question about Dr Chilton’s pen: how did Dr Lector get it, while restrained in a straight jacket and restraint carrier?
Since Chilton’s pen was later missing and the object from Hannibal’s mouth appears to be the pen clip, he got it nonetheless.
Hannibal could only move his eyes and mouth when Chilton was in his cell. Hannibal had to outthink Chilton by distracting him as he later reached for his paperwork and pen. No doubt with a hint of knowledge of how to solve the case or who the serial killer was. Chilton clearly desired fame and it would have gotten his immediate attention. If he was paying more attention to Hannibal than the paperwork, the pen could have fallen to the floor to be collected by Hannibal after his restraints were removed. The small sound of the pen hitting the floor could be masked vocally or by a sudden jerking in his restraints. It could be in a seeming rage that he would never tell Chilton that detail, to make him angry and storm out without noticing the missing pen. A long shot that requires intelligence, good timing, and masterful manipulation, but very possible.

The film sets up several similarities between Crawford and Lecter. I think they are sort of competing father figures for Clarice. Clarice was a student of Crawford's at a class he taught and when Clarice first meets Lecter she says, "I'm a student. I'm here to learn from you." And in the final scene at Clarice's graduation Crawford quickly ducks out after the ceremony leaving Clarice alone...only for Lecter to "step in" calling her on the phone to congratulate her.

So I would suggest watching the tv show Hannibal after this or after the Hannibal movie. The book order was Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising. The first movie made of the series was an adaptation of Red Dragon called Mind Hunter in the 80s with Brian Cox as Lector. They released Silence with Anthony Hopkins which did very well and was followed by the Hannibal movie and then Red Dragon. Then they made Hannibal Rising which is not a good movie and I suggest skipping it as it was a prequel cash grab.
NBC's Hannibal takes place before Red Dragon and is set in modern day. You only have to have seen Silence and know who Hannibal Lector is to watch it. It has 3 seasons and stars Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal, Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford, and Hugh Dancy as the investigator Will Graham. The show doesn't have Clarice Starling as a character because a different company/network own the rights to the character.
I personally think the Hannibal show is a masterclass. The cinematography blows me away and I am so surprised such a show could have been on a network channel. It has many twists and some really fun characters.

One of my favourite movies of all time! And also, is this preparation for the Hannibal show?

tossing in my dearest, deepest request to watch Bryan Fuller's Hannibal TV series as well... aka the greatest television series of all time. Cancelled 4 seasons early, but the 3 seasons we got are absolutely perfect as an entire series on their own as well so it's not that bad.

In the book the guy who cuffs him doesn't notice the pen clasp hidden between his fingers because Hannibal has a six -fingered hand, and clasps his hands behind his back with the extra finger wiggling on top as a distraction.

Hannibal (2001) is a sequel, Red Dragon (2002) is a prequel, and the TV series is a retelling of the books that the movies were based off of. None are as good as Silence Of The Lambs but Red Dragon and the show are pretty good. Hannibal 2001 not so much lol. There’s also Hannibal Rising but the less said about that one the better.

Nobody ever seems to realize that when Hannibal meets the Senator, he is dressed in completely different clothes to when he was strapped up in his cell, in the previous scene where the Prison Governor was lying on his bed playing with his pen. The obvious implication is that the staff left both and unrestrained Hannibal and the pen in the cell alone, allowing him to get changed into his orange jump suit that he is wearing in the next scene with the Senator. I guess it's because in both of those scenes, the viewer is shown, Hannibal as being restrained, so viewers can't mentally deduce the fact that, he must have been released in-between these scenes in order to change his clothing (which is when he also nabbed the pen).
