Just because it's not said doesn't mean it was removed. The first time I watched the scene with Clarice's story, I immediately knew "Oh, the 'Silence of the Lambs' is Catherine getting rescued". Lecter does everything but say it.
I will always love this film. My dad passed away in 2016, very unexpectedly. He wasn’t great at taking care of me as a kid because he struggled with an addiction to alcohol. Because of this, whenever I visited for the weekend, he’d kind of let me just a watch whatever. This film gets all the credit for the birth of my love for horror, and it always reminds me of my dad. He had such a kind soul, but addiction ended up taking him away from me and everyone who loved him. I struggled with my own addiction to opiates and heroin for 10 years. I finally got the help I needed and now I can give my daughter the best version of me; clean and sober. I’ll be 4 years clean in July. Sorry this comment got so personal but that’s one of the best things about films in general. The way they evoke certain memories and situations and how those films will forever be tied to them
@@ScDarkness913 yeah way to much gore. its not really that scary its just that gore can be very scary for kids and they might get traumatized so get an censored version if you really want to show it to her.
Well done on 4 years that's fucking awesome I'm sorry you lost your dad, I've been hearing more and more awful stories like that It makes me think about the trauma and pain my family feel regarding my drinking problem I've had a bit of a kick and it's been about a month since my last drink Hope you have a good day 😊
The best scene, and the dramatic climax, is the one second when Clarice and Hannibal's fingers touch, the consummation of their relationship. That's when they both realize their aspirations-- she realizes her own motivation, and he gets to sincerely help someone as a psychiatrist. Gives me chills.
This movie is FULL of fire quotes "Amputate a man's leg and you can still feel it tickle. Tell me, when your little girl is on the slab, where will it tickle you?" is by far my personal favorite
I purposely waited until lunch to watch this because I like to TH-cam while I eat. Somehow, despite having seen this movie COUNTLESS times, I manage to ALWAYS forget about that part. It made me lose my appetite for a minute 😂
When you think about it, it's amazing how campy this movie is... or rather how campy this movie could be. Hannibal Lecter utters so many corny one-liners ("A census taker once tried to test me... Love your suit" and the like), and, shit, the movie concerns one serial killer who pauses in between murders to appreciate classical music, and another who skins women in order to turn himself into one. It sounds like the stuff of godawful lurid schlock, but the writing and tone of both the novel and the movie elevate it. It's really a remarkable achievement, and I still don't altogether understand how they pulled it off.
@@colinbaldwin313you can always get away with corny writing if you’re tone and ambiance take the charge in compensation. Look at Gladiator. Another film considered to be one of the best ever, and even a lot of crew members, including the screenwriter himself, said yeah maybe the writing isn’t the best. But everything else came together to help the film make an impact.
That’s the whole point of their relationship. Many other agents had been sent in to talk to Hannibal but he went stone cold on each and every one of them. Then walks in Clarice. A fresh faced trainee, who’s still green in almost every way, but also has purpose. She’s not an FBI agent to make headlines, she’s an agent because she’s trying to honor her father. That and her tact and politeness towards the world makes her worthy in Hannibal’s eyes to gain help from him. Plus after being sexually assaulted by Miggs, I’m sure that also was a huge turnaround point for Hannibal as he actually felt sorry for her. She was definitely different from those around her and he knew that.
Probably a top 5 movie for me, I watch it once or twice a year. The music, acting, and direction are top tier and made Hannibal a horror icon. If anyone wants to see an early thriller with Anthony Hopkins I suggest checking out 1978's "Magic", a great horror doll movie, he's amazing in it, last I looked it was on Tubi for free too :)
It's not that far fetched he could climb up to an alcove to shoot from. Remember earlier in the movie where in a training exercise one recruit was mock attacked from behind and reminded to be prepared for attack from all angles.
7:24 - Fun fact on that iconic line; This is actually a medical joke. In the prison, Dr. Lecter was mostly taking Monoamine oxidase inhibitors(Which was used to treat his psychopathic state) What foods are you NOT supposed to take with it Liver - Liver Beans - Fava Beans Wine - Chianti (This was the change the movie made because most people didn't know that Amarone was a wine. So they changed it to a popular wine at the time) He was basically trying to tell the detective "I'm off my meds". Something she didn't pick up on.
I was wondering how James would approach Miggs’s heinous prank, and at 8:25 I learned he planned to get demonetized for the sake of the bit. This is why I love you, James
This is the first time I noticed Hannibal mentioning "the Beldevere" in Florence during their very first conversation, only for Buffalo Bill's hometown being revealed as Beldevere, Ohio later on! He really was dropping hints left and right!
One of my favorite overlooked moments is the scene just before Hannibal escapes, and he is drawing a portrait of Clarice holding a lamb.... And then his dinner is brought out to him, and it is lamb, rare.
I wrote a paper in my college film class about how the movie does an incredible job of literally putting the viewer in Clarice’s shoes. It bonds the viewer to Clairce and makes the idea of the “male gaze” more personal. Amazing film.
The original dates were on my birthday and I was sooo excited for them then sad when they got postponed. But I'm excited to get them now, love this collection so much!
This comment is a shout out to Anthony Hopkins. A couple years back he'd posted on twitter about his sobriety streak and how proud he was. Days later, I quit drinking too. Its cuz of him I've made 2 years without alcohol!
Ever since I was little, my dad would go “Hello, Clarice” in a creepy voice. I never knew what he was referencing until last year when we watched Silence of the Lambs together. Crazy that he’s been mimicking a horror movie villain for years without me even knowing
If you never knew about the villain then how would you have possibly known? It's called learning in hindsight. He did that on purpose so when you watched it with him you'd get it.
This whole movie is amazing, but my god, that climactic sequence at Bill's house is TERRIFYING. The way he's trying not to giggle the entire time they're talking, the butterfly picture on the wall, Clarice quietly unfastening her gun holster...it's so damn good. And the night vision scene, jesus. There's a moment in the book during that scene where Bill is admiring how pretty her hair is and thinking to himself that even though she's too petite for him to use her skin, he thinks he'll keep her hair. Easily one of the most terrifying passages in a book ever.
Levine was also in Heat, the first Fast and the Furious, the first Joy Ride and more recently in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, he's such an underrated actor
Funny I justed started binge watching monk on netflix in the UK (which arrived today) I also remembered there was a reference to silence of the lamb in an episode of monk where he wore night vision goggles to catch the murderer just like in silence of the lambs (I think it was the blackout episode) I know there were other references but that one stuck out more
"Jame Gumb, who's name sounds like they forgot to finish writing it..." That kind of is the case. The novel explains that his mother intended to call him James but a clerical error cut the s off his first name.
Hot take: I think that Buffalo Bill should at least be considered for the Golden Chainsaw. The whole movie is about tracking him down, Clarice Starling finally gets to complete her arc and save the victim, the way it is shot with the night vison and blackout scenes still has me on the edge of my seat, and the way that Bill dies looks almost like a moth, with the goggles representing the eyes and the twitching reminding me of a dying butterfly. Although it's a gun kill, the setup and payoff are great, as well as having a lot of motivation to see this creep get taken down for good. What do y'all think?
Fun fact, my parents grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and my mother’s best friend was Foster’s stand in during filming! It’s so exciting to see this on the kill count. Much love to James, Chelsea, Zoran, and the entire production team
It drives me nuts that 1. People say the quote wrong. It's not 'Hello, Clarice', it's 'Good evening, Clarice'. 2. People insist Anthony Hopkins doesn't blink in the entire movie even though he clearly does. In fact most of the time, his blinks are very precise and methodical.
And nobody knows what the last line is. Everyone thinks it's either "I'm having an old friend for dinner" or "Dr. Lecter?" The actual last line is Chilton talking about the security system as he leaves the plane.
i just love the personality of james' he makes this channel fun to watch and actually knows stuff about the movie he's talking about not just showing people die. respect fr
that scene is what sealed the deal for me. genuinely so scary and the movie does such a good job building up tension to it. All of a sudden a hour and half of being tense and lured in pays off in that horror house of a sequence
The night vision scene is one of the most tense scenes ever put to film. I've seen this movie over 100 times, and it still gets my heart racing every time. I'm very happy that Demme ended up directing this film -- it seems he had some truly amazing ideas.
15:25 So happy you included this line it's my favorite in the movie. "Caterpillar into chrysalis...or P U P A." That and of course, "Oh wait...was she a great big fat person?" 24:21
Would love to see you cover the creep show series. I love that you go more in-depth with the production and special effects now. You are definitely a TH-camr who’s learned and grown in a very impressive way
The end scene when Clarice is in the dark and being stalked by Buffalo Bill is so thrilling and nerve-racking when you first watch the scene. it literally gave me an anxiety attack, an amazing movie
Two confirmed kills, but yeah it takes at least 3 to be classified as a serial killer. He is suspected to have killed several more people, so that’s probably where the confusion comes from even though it was never proven
@@kenziecullen4434 He is suspected to have killed his mother and brother as well. There is also a good chance he killed a number of vagrants based on the body parts in his home vs the number of graves he robbed.
Anthony Hopkins gets all the praise, and its deserved, but Jodie Fosters 'Clarice' is my favorite part of the film. I know she won an oscar too, but she gives an all-time great performance same as Hopkins. I think her character was equally impactful on film too. She walks that line perfectly of being vulnerable while remaining a strong detective.
Fun Fact: the Greenskeepers made a hilarious song called "Lotion" inspired by Buffalo Bill's iconic line. I know this because James keeps playing the song whenever he lowers the lotion down to me and I can't believe how good the WiFi is down here.
😂 I think there’s actually a scene in an episode of monk that’s meant to look like the night vision scene, it’s called “Mr. Monk and the Blackout” I think
This is in my opinion, one of the top three movies of ALL TIME. It won the big five at the oscars, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. Phenomenal work of art with amazingly complex characters and Jodie's portrayal of Clarice is something we will never see again - Clarice Starling is a very complex and relatable character who isn't overpowered, impossibly strong for her size- but rather an intelligent individual who is relentlessly embracing her femininity. Through her pure intentions and authenticity, Jodie's character became a symbol of divine power motivated by pure desires to save weaker individuals in her world. Despite the fact she will never be as physically strong as the men who tower over her, she preservers because she sees saving other innocent lives as a parallel to saving the lambs. The whole point Jodie was trying to make was that in the past, since women didn't have the strength or "heroism" that could compare to men, Hollywood often resorts to crafting lazy, unrealistic female heroines (i.e marvel women) who possess unfathomable qualities and don't come across as relatable at all. Besides this, often the only redeeming quality of women's characters in film is their attractiveness, or their relevance is limited to being as the love interest to their male costars. The Silence of the Lambs changed that when Clarice Starling appeared on screen. The producers took the time to flesh out Jodie's character, Clarice, thereby allowing this talented actress to portray an authentic female role who embodies the characteristics of someone motivated by a well-developed moral compass rather than such trivial, one-dimensional motifs (a relief for audiences). She is then juxtaposed against her male colleagues, almost all of whom are motivated purely by advancement rather than the cause itself.
Hearing “Welcome to the Kill Count, Clarice!” And hearing my name so many times in a video, makes me feel like this Kill Count was specifically for me😂😂😂 This movie has been such a huge part of my life, even before I had actually seen it. Having the same name as the protagonist of a cult classic, just spelled slightly different, was something that sparked my horror movie interest from a young age. I knew the general idea of the film, but I was not old enough to watch it when the comments on my name first started. And when I finally was old enough, it was one of the first horror films I ever watched. Seeing this film triggered my love of the genre and I am forever grateful for it!!!
Watched the movie about a month ago and honestly had a blast, but didn't realize how perfect the film was when you pointed out how well shot the movie was, with Clarice being filmed in a claustrophobic manner. So well job you guys !!
Anthony Hopkins is actually a icon for the autism community, quite a lot of people outside of the community doesn't know Mr Hopkins is autistic. He is a huge influence proving to people that we autistics are capable of anything
My best friend is autistic, and so is my father. If I ever hear anyone say something diminishing the capabilities of autistic people, I cannot help but laugh because those two people alone have much more than neurotypicals could even dream of achieving. And I love that Anthony Hopkins is being a prominent representation for the community.
Thank you for letting me know this, it's very interesting. I've just looked into that on his Wikipedia page, and also seen that - quite ironically for Hannibal the Cannibal - he's pescatarian
I thought you had missed on one of the biggest lines/memes ever, but 26:18 took away my fears 😂 James not going to risk having ashy skin for the kill count!
Fun fact: due to this being filmed in Pittsburgh, my pap (who was a city officer) was actually in this movie, and was one of the cops at the elevator scene. He was also in a later scene that included all the officers.
Sir Integra Hellsing: "Over the last few years we've had some...expensive claims." Alucard: "Like what?" Integra: "Killing at least a dozen innocent people." Alucard: "Oh, so did Anthony Hopkins and he got a f***ing Oscar for it!"
Silence of The Lambs is simply one of the greatest films ever made. The night vison scene has to be one of the most tense and memorable moments in the film. Also “Love your suit” is probably my favourite quotes in the film
This (along with Cloverfield and Pan’s Labyrinth) was one of the movies that I had to watch for my Intro to Film class in my first year of University. Because this was in 2020, it was all over Zoom, so we had to watch the movies on our own time. During the class that we were discussing it, one of my classmates changed their Zoom background to be one of the shots of Hannibal standing in the corner of his cell, staring at the camera. It was really creepy, and eventually my professor noticed and had a laugh about it. Whoever did that was a genius, well played sir
I could talk for hours and hours why The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best movies I have ever seen because every aspect of this movie is just a masterpiece.
This movie drove me to major Psychology before I started my college experience, which I have a year left of. It holds a very special place in my heart! Seriously, Hopkins and Foster is the best duo! Thank you! 🖤❤️
"The Silence of the Lambs"(1991) is a crime mystery thriller movie masterpiece! This is the best movie of all time for this Kind! The last part of the movie was scary and very agonizing!
This movie is like one of my Tia's favorite movies ever. After she showed it to me my freaking life changed. Been asking for this to be covered for 4 years now and finally the moment has come. God, bless you James! God bless you! 🥲
What a great day today, got approved for my first apartment and came on TH-cam to see Dead Meat finally covering one of my all time favorite movies!❤️❤️
Kasi Lemons is a director; she is called Eve's Bayou. It's labeled as horror, but more Southern Gothic (to me at least, but do I know). You and the team should check it. I don't know if it's kill-count-worthy; only one person dies, but it's definitely podcast worthy.
So glad you covered this James!! 👍This film is amazing in so many ways. My favorite scene is where Lecter explains how "we covet what we see everyday" and giving the additional insight to Buffalo Bill's psyche. A great display of Lecter's terrifying intelligence.
I think the detail of the one cop pointing his gun at the ceiling above the doorway is actually amazing, Hannibal Lecter is so infamous and terrifying that the cop probably thought he could hide there.
Jodie Foster's acting in this film is brilliant, this film's a classic. Watched as a kid in television, nightmarish adventure. Anthony Hopkins in 24 minutes is in the scariest as the whole movie itself. Disturbing and realistic picture.
This is not only my all time favorite horror movie, but #8 on my personal top 10 favorite movies, period. Thank you so much for covering it after all these years! Well done to all involved in making this vid, keep up the amazing work!

The best scene, and the dramatic climax, is the one second when Clarice and Hannibal's fingers touch, the consummation of their relationship. That's when they both realize their aspirations-- she realizes her own motivation, and he gets to sincerely help someone as a psychiatrist. Gives me chills.
This movie is FULL of fire quotes

Multiple Miggs will suffer for that.
I think the better joke was cutting off when he says “more like getting off on…”
The fact that this masterpiece of a movie ends with a fucking *pun* about cannibalism is so campy, in the best way.
@gameroftheyear1000 The people who made Gladiator sold themselves short. All the dialogue in that movie is killer.
I liked the way that both Clarice and Hannibal had this sort of respect for each other throughout the film made it very interesting to watch
@@gameroftheyear1000 She went in to talk to Hannibal. What Miggs did was rude, and Hannibal does not abide that.

7:24 - Fun fact on that iconic line; This is actually a medical joke. In the prison, Dr. Lecter was mostly taking Monoamine oxidase inhibitors(Which was used to treat his psychopathic state) What foods are you NOT supposed to take with it
Liver - Liver
Beans - Fava Beans
Wine - Chianti (This was the change the movie made because most people didn't know that Amarone was a wine. So they changed it to a popular wine at the time)
He was basically trying to tell the detective "I'm off my meds". Something she didn't pick up on.

This is the first time I noticed Hannibal mentioning "the Beldevere" in Florence during their very first conversation, only for Buffalo Bill's hometown being revealed as Beldevere, Ohio later on! He really was dropping hints left and right!
*Belvedere.
Any Hannibal based content on Dead Meat is a huge win in my book
I’m hoping we can get a podcast episode on the tv series, cause James has said it’s too big for a kill count.

My brother always says "oh wait... was she a great big fat person?" When talking about friends

"Well, Clarice - have the lambs stopped screaming?"
The Lambs weren’t in the movie they were silenced for the entire time
The final line of the book, "....Clarice Starling, sleeping deeply, sweetly, in the silence of the lambs."
That part is so creepy
"I'm having an old friend for dinner" is so chilling yet so funny at the same time 🤣
It makes a lot of sense to go to a country where you stick out like a SORE THUMB in order to escape an evil killer.
“Don’t you make me hurt your dog” is so weirdly satisfying to me like seeing her get under Buffalo Bill’s skin is great
I still can’t believe Buffalo Bill played Captain Leland Stottlemayer in Monk. Always blows my mind
I had to double check that and I can’t believe I missed that.
Really!? Oh wow.
That would be an interesting case for Monk.
Shows his versatility! He’s also in Memoirs of a Geisha and Shutter Island, he kinda disappears into roles.
I love him as Stottlemayer!
Levine was also in Heat, the first Fast and the Furious, the first Joy Ride and more recently in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, he's such an underrated actor
Funny I justed started binge watching monk on netflix in the UK (which arrived today) I also remembered there was a reference to silence of the lamb in an episode of monk where he wore night vision goggles to catch the murderer just like in silence of the lambs (I think it was the blackout episode) I know there were other references but that one stuck out more
"Jame Gumb, who's name sounds like they forgot to finish writing it..."
That kind of is the case. The novel explains that his mother intended to call him James but a clerical error cut the s off his first name.
She was drunk right?
@@ZombieBiohazardYes, she was.

The jokes in this were exquisite, but that "Pembry tastes bland, season him with pepper spray" was (mwah) chef's kiss.
