    Thank you, thank you BMW for turning a simple, inexpensive repair into a complicated, expensive nightmare.

      It's the same with Audi/VW. We will soon need to "register" a simple lightbulb change. This is getting ridiculous.

      Apparently Audi is much worse, you gotta input battery make and something called BEM code and even serial number 😂

  • @mguylenton
    @mguylenton 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    So the system supposedly monitors the battery status, and adjusts charging accordingly, but then cannot adjust to a new battery. How does that make sense?
    This seems like very poor software design. Added to which, how hard would it be to incorporate an interface that is essentially just a form on the dash screen in which you just enter the new battery details?
    And do batteries really last longer as a result of this system?

      Battery registration/management plays a very significant role in battery longevity. Although we must admit...we have never heard of a BMW battery making it 10 years. Great job!

      @@BMWRepairGuide Thanks! I use a Noco G1100 smart charger on the batteries every night (two vehicles) as I don't put a lot of mileage on them. I'm not sure of much of a factor that meant to the longevity(?)

      Hi you seem like an expert. Quick question if you have the time
      I just changed the battery on my bmw 120d, it’s a 2012 model and has a stop/start feature, however the battery that was in the car was not an agm battery and didn’t last very long. I just switched to a Varta agm battery today but I haven’t been able to go to the local dealership to do the registration and I will be unable to do registration of the battery until Monday morning.
      During the weekends I don’t go out, so the car will remain off until Monday. I understand the new battery can get cooked if I don’t register it. But can the damage be that bad if I just wait 3 days before registering ?
      I will have it registered first thing Monday but until then, I will remain by leaving the car completely off and not drive it at all this weekend because I fear it will cook the battery. What’s your thoughts on this?

    • @MarioDallaRiva
      @MarioDallaRiva 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@muhmmedarbee8014 No issues if you don't drive the car since the charging system won't be active with the engine off. The battery registration data is only relevant to the charging system while active (engine on).
      Note: make sure whoever registers the battery also ensures it's coded for the same Ah & battery type as what's being installed in the car. ie Your car needs to know it's an AGM battery and the proper Ah rating, for example 80Ah AGM battery as I have.

    According to numerous sources several of which I know to be valid, it does not have to be a "BMW" scanner to register the battery but take that for what its worth. Of course BMW never passes a chance to sell you a "BMW" brand tool!

    • @kwangnam4694
      @kwangnam4694 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can confirm it does have to be BMW specific scanner. One scanner can have multiple makers programmed in it but it must include BMW.

    The comment about women was rude. Who cares if the young woman might been reading or not? Damn guys, it was the information she passed on that was important. I own a 2013 x5 and the reputable dealer i purchased it from obviously didn't know about this. I asked for the battery to be replaced before purchasing. Was told when i asked at delivery if they put a new battery in. "YES" was the answer I was given.
    Let me put it this way , the battery was used and a constant drain on itself. Many features would not work. The module was working even harder. Hard enough to burn the floor board monitor out. Note: this is a safety feature so as not to burn out the more and sensitive sensors in the engine.
    Dealer quote to fix $2100.
    Fixing myself....$52.00

    I believe you can purchase a professional scan tool such as Autel that can work across various vehicles. I just had my new battery 'registered' for my 2016 BMW X-3 with this. Basically the car will recognize that you got a new battery and run the alternator and other electronics accordingly.

    Only BMWs with IBS require battery registration. You mentioned not all BMWs have IBS, but your list of exceptions is incomplete. My 2013 E92 does not have IBS. BMWs without iDrive or BMW Assist were not equipped with IBS.

    Most scanners can register a new battery. But if you change battery type (AGM or non AGM) or AH, you also must code the battery. This most scanners can´t.

    IBS- Irritable BMW Syndrome. I have a 2011 335xi and am ready to let it roll off a cliff! These cars are worthless and a waste of money. Spend more time in shop than on the road. Spent thousands on repairs and kept up on maintenance and the thing just loves to flash malfunction codes, wait on the side of road and get a ride on the back of tow trucks. It has more piggyback miles than it does having actual driving miles...

    False info as most scanners can register a battery. The aftermarket scanner she is holding is a Foxwell. I wasn't impressed by it and returned it after I noted it would lock up on certain screens. Propery battery registration should include screens for: battery manufacture, battery serial number, battery part number, battery type (AGM, STD) and battery capacity (Ah). Some scanners only allow you to register the same battery which is pure BS.
