  • Hey Everyone,
Today, we’re going to show you how to change, install and register a new battery in a BMW. We’re demonstrating this process on a 2013 F30 335, however, it’s the same process in the F80, F32, F15, F25, and just about any other BMW that requires the registration process.
If you’re looking for professional help, contact our friend Mark @ mybimmerbrain@gmail.com, as he offers a remote service to help with the battery registration process.

Hey Brian, thanks for the vid. One thing you didn't mention (that I encountered) was a retaining bracket bolted into the frame to keep the battery in place. Once I took the positive, negative, and bracket off, I was yanking on the battery with all my might to no avail lol. Finally realized that bracket was there and managed to remove it with a 13mm, and freely lift my battery out.

khowe000 I had the same situation today, I was yanking it as hard as I could, just to realize, there is that little hidden bolt holding the battery in place, I’m so relieved that I came across your comment

I can't thank you enough for your video tutorials. I must have saved like great amount of money after my warranty expired.
Here's the things I learned to do myself after coming across your channel...
    1) Spark plugs
    2) Engine Air Filters
    3) Cabin Filter
    s
    4) Oil Changes
    5) Light bulbs (Front and Rear)
    6) I even replaced bad lock actuator learning from your soft close door tutorial. Lol, something dealer quoted me for $600. I got the used OEM actuator from ebay for less then $20. and $10 trim removal kit.
    7) Next I am planning for battery replacement soon. Dealer quotes me $590 for new battery + labor + Programming (I guess they meant registration)
Thanks again and keep up the great work. Appreciate it!!!

Thank you for this video Bryan! Super helpful. I just replaced the original battery on my 2015 F30. I have a few other observations to add:
    1) My battery was also held in by a bolted clamp at the bottom of the battery compartment. It fit a 13mm socket and it took a couple of extenders to reach.
    2) The original vent tube had apparently been smashed between the battery and the positive cable, so when I installed the new battery, I made sure the vent tube was freely sitting on the other side of the cable, so it wouldn't get smashed up against the battery.
    3) There are vent holes near the positive and negative terminals, but the F30 only has a vent tube for the positive side vent. In the original battery the vent near the negative side was covered with a cap. I simply placed this cap in the new battery in the same position, and connected the vent tube to the vent on the positive side like the video shows.

I replaced the battery on my wife's 320d and was advised by the BMW mechanic to connect a small 12 volt battery to the charge terminals under the bonnet. Remove the battery in the boot, negative first. Install the new battery which should be the same size and capacity as the old one. Once connected don't forget the vent pipe. Remove the temporarily battery from under the bonnet and job done.

Amperage or current is regulated by the state of charge of the battery. When the battery is weak, the electromotive force (voltage) is not strong enough to hold back the current from the alternator trying to recharge the battery. As the battery reaches a state of full charge, the electromotive force becomes strong enough to oppose the current flow from the alternator, the amperage output from the alternator will drop to close to zero, while the voltage will remain at 13.5 to 14.5. When more electrical power is used, the electromotive force will reduce and alternator amperage will increase. It is extremely important that when alternator efficiency is checked, both voltage and amperage outputs are checked. Each alternator has a rated amperage output depending on the electrical requirements of the vehicle.

Great video as always...just one thing, on my 2012 F30 328i, there is an additional metal clamp located at the base of where the battery sits... on the negative side. This clamp must be removed in order for the battery to come out. Its just a single bolt, but it took me about 20 minutes to figure out why I couldn't remove the battery as easy as you show in the video. :)

Good video but I’m not sure about battery exploding if not registered or registered inaccurate amp hours. I’m sure there must be some kind of regulator to detect over charge just like any cars would have. I think registration just gives it more precise charging. That is my opinion.

The video is excellent in detail. Unfortunately, there is a change between MY13 and MY14. The newer model has a bracket in the bottom of the battery shelf on one side and a grid on the other end. The battery must be fitted into the grid and then tied down with the bracket. Imagine my surprise when I took off the bracket and disconnected the pos and neg. Gave the handles a yank and nothing moved! not even a wiggle. Off to the hardware store to buy more metric head and an extension.

Here are the BMW Battery options in 2021. BMW switched from 90 AH to 92 AH AGM batteries, years ago.
    BMW 3/4-Series
EP AGM Battery 92AH/850 CCA 61212353812
EP AGM Battery 92AH/850 CCA 61215A40E29 (Newest P/N in 2021)
    BMW SUVs
EP AGM Battery 105AH/950 CCA 61212353814
EP AGM Battery 105AH/950 CCA 61215A40E33 (Newest P/N in 2021)
Carly may work to both change the battery type and capacity, while also performing the registration. You can also use Bimmercode (to change Battery Type and Capacity) and Bimmerlink (Battery Registration - mileage). If your new BMW OEM or aftermarket battery capacity is not listed, pick the closest number (92 --> 90 AH). The battery size options are fixed in the BMW DME (ECU) computer.

Also the Carly app does not require for you to connect via wifi. You just put it on and open the app and press connect. Then just add your car and scan. Pretty simple. I also had to reregister the battery to wipe the old data. My battery was also a 95 amp battery and had to code back to 90.

@10:19 The mileage reading in the Carly App doesn't make sense. They show mileage as 0 km across the board after the New Battery Registration. It should store the current milage at the top of the list to tell the DME that a new battery was installed at the current mileage, so the charging system doesn't overcharge the New Battery as if it were years old. Also the Battery Parameters are all -- Blank after changing the type. You have to restart the car and read the Battery Data again. But I guess the Carly App subtracts the current mileage from the stored battery new mileage yielding all zero's km (New Battery).

Yeah, there is a cleat or bracket at the base of the negative side of the battery, fastened by a 13mm bolt. If it is missing, order a new one. Now you know why there was a round hockey puck under the battery to force it up against the L-shaped plastic bracket on this F30 335i. The plastic bracket is just in case of crash or roll over. Without the metal cleat, the battery would bounce around in the trunk...no bueno.

Sure it is. For example when my stock 90Ah AGM battery became bad I replaced it with Varta's 95Ah AGM battery that is actually a better battery than OEM for like 1/3 of the cost ;).
Since you can't register 95Ah battery, you register it like 90Ah battery and you are good to go ;).

Hi Brian. Thanks for the video. I bought a 100ah battery and there's not an option for that either. Is it okay to code that all the way down to the 90ah option? I know your battery just had a difference of 2ah so I'm wondering if a difference of 10ah would still be ok.

not sure what a memory saver is but bmws codes are written to non volatile memory. only the clock gets cleared

And be careful not to drop the 10mm screw or you have to unplug everything and unscrew that 13mm one which you didn't know it existed just to remove the battery again and find screw. 😆 By the way, the release hose for ne was too short to put it back to the battery.

Hello Brian, thanks for making this video! I followed your guide, all else is good except that my auto start/stop isn’t working even though the switch is set to default (enabled). My car is a 2012 F30 335i. I am hoping you could advise on the steps to take to possibly restore that feature. Thanks!

    • @KiesMotorsports
      @KiesMotorsports  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, sure thing! Did you do any other coding? The battery registration process wouldn't have any impact on auto stop/start, so it's a little strange that it did that. Some cars have it so whatever you last had it on, it does. So, if you last had it disabled, when you get in the car, it will still be disabled. Do you think that could be it?

    • @PaulPhenom
      @PaulPhenom 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I am not really sure to be quite honest. The 2012's I believe always defaults to enabled auto start/stop every engine start so that's why I'm puzzled myself as to why it is not working. The old battery was a BMW Varta, 900CCA/90Ah and the new one is a Bosch 900CCA/90Ah, manufactured 03/18. The battery was sitting idle from that time until last night, could it be that the battery does not have enough charge? Trying to pick your brain here and see if we could figure it out! :)
