Columbo knew everything that went down just from this convo. Dude didn't make an excuse why he can't show the gun, didn't stall, completely confidently opened the drawer to show the gun and was completely shocked it wasn't there. Not the behavior of the killer. That eliminated him as a suspect, and then the wife's very fake "Why, no, sweetheart!" put her in the crosshairs. This is one of the better ABC ones.
Scored both chocolates and a premium cigar. Seems like a successful visit to me.
That explains a lot. When he says, "Just 1 more thing...", he is probably looking for another treat.

Barry Corbin, he was also good as Maurice Minnifield in the TV series Northern Exposure which wrapped up a year or two before appearing in this episode of Columbo.

The later ones often lacked something this one had.
70s series were easily the best,Columbo was bouncing and even more animated. This episode was decent though 👌
@Jon Davis more the era, l just find the 70's ones different class . Not sure it mattered the length. In the 70s Columbo was like a terrier snapping at the murderes heals. That kind of died out in later series
I don't know about that he has so many I don't know what episode it was but it's one where he fell in love with the victim
"A Trace Of Murder" is an greatly underrated Columbo episode. But for me, it still has staying power, with a smart script, a terrific cast, and solid direction. It's not often in a Columbo episode that the person being framed, in this case Clifford, perfectly played by Barry Corbin, could actually be a plausible suspect. (Edna was framed in the very early episode "Suitable for Framing"--whose title teleplay writer Jackson Gillis clearly intended as a pun--but no ordinary police officer, let alone Columbo could think she was actually capable of the murder.) And the interplay between the murderer and accomplice, played by David Rasche and Shera Danese (then Peter's wife in real life), is fun to watch. Plus, this episode has the special edge where the murderer is a forensic expert in murders, where the framing was so well done that it would fool all ordinary detectives, posing all sorts of challenges for Columbo. But, of course, Columbo is no ordinary detective. What's not to like?

He aged like all of us are doing and you can go back to the first episode of Columbo and look at him as he was then and look at him in this clip. He changed. And he kept getting older and came down with alzheimers, which took him on his final journey. That is why he is not with us today. When he was in that first episode he was handsome and YOUNG. In this clip he is an OLD MAN. Go back to 1961 and you'll see him even younger in the movie POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES. AGING SUCKS (to quote the late Joan Rivers).

You should use sulferless match or the 'paper' that comes with the cigar. Light the paper however you want. Let it burn a tad. Then use that paper for the cigar. = best taste

Shera allowed her husband Peter Falk, to be found wandering around with Alzheimer's. What kind of wife allows her beloved husband to be in that position? A money grubber. He deserved better and to have dignity..
I remember a clip of Perter Falk wandering around, confused. Don't know if his dementia was known to the public at that time. But it was sad ans a shocker to me. I think TMZ ran the clip with their snide comments. Peter Falk was one of my favorite actors.

My dad toddled down the street to go back to our old house. Theres so much that comes out from people when someone grows old especially when theyre outnumbered. Im like my father. A brainy type used to working your mind. Too many people ordering a person around causes dementia i believe. When you have to hide candy bars in your underwear drawer it says it all. Some people love ordering other people around.
She was asked what she liked most about her husband Peter Falk and she allegedly said, "His money." Sad. Peter Falk seemed like a kind person and I know he was an excellent actor. Falk should have stayed with his first wife who looked like a class act. JMO.

So Columbo doesn't take any of the $300,000 in ransom money that was insured when he had the chance years earlier but yet fills his pockets with chocolates that doesn't belong to him from a private residence.
Usually chocolates sitting in a candy bowl on a table like that are set out for household guests.
