The part of "Cathleen Calvert" (the lady in the car) was played by Shera Danese, who was Falk's wife at the time and 22 years his junior. She was in six episodes of Columbo and they were married around the time of her first appearance in the episode "Fade in to Murder" when she was 28 and he was 50. They remained married for 33 years until Falk's death in 2011. Her entire acting career existed only during her relationship with Falk. LAPD's ingratitude is stunning. Notwithstanding his outstanding track record, solving at least 69 murder cases without spending too much of police budget (his entertainment expenditure was limited to the cost of hot dogs for his witnesses for which he never failed to ask for receipt), Columbo remained in the rank of lieutenant to the day of his retirement. He could have made a deputy inspector at the least.
As Ivan stated, Columbo was humble and did not want a promotion. I'm not sure how exactly police hierarchy works in the states, since I'm from Germany, but my guess is that, as is true for most jobs, the more you get promoted, the less practical work you do. You tend to become a "pencil pusher", which wouldn't be a job for Columbo. He loves being "on the streets", solving cases.
@@cooliod00d In a business corporation, sometimes a very competent sales person can be appointed as "playing manager", retaining the rank as manager (maybe senior manager) with higher salary, supervising his subordinate sales personnel, while he himself remain engaged in sales activities often responsible for major accounts. I had a few clips of Colombo like this come up on TH-cam and after watching them it inspired me to start watching the series. I just started watching it yesterday so I’m only 2 episodes in.
Many people have, unfairly, attacked the later Columbo episodes. Agreed: some of them are simply awful. But there are about five that are excellent, right up there among the best of the legendary 70s. This is definitely one of them.
Every time Columba puts his thumb and fingers up to the middle of his forehead, and acts like he doesn’t know something, the criminal is in BIG trouble!
The actress is Peter Falk's widow. They were married in real life and she appeared in a number of Columbo stories. They only parted company when Peter passed away due to Dementia.
The criminal's arrogance does them in every time. If the suspects simply said "talk to my attorney" each and every time, and said "get a warrant" whenever Columbo wanted to poke around, there would never be a case. But Columbo plays the bumbling fool and lulls his prey with a false sense of intellectual superiority, and then he closes the trap.
"Ah sir I want to wind up this report just one more question - a sir now you say..". The lieutenant was a knee slapper and, at times, almost as good as Perry Mason who solved the murder during the last two minutes of the show! Match wits with Columbo and it's all over.
No, they're nickname in Hollywood was the Fighting Faulks. His wife didn't take good care of him in his later years. He had dementia & I saw pictures of him wandering the street with a busted lip & worn out clothes. With all the money he had, she didn't hire the help to make sure he was well cared for & this woman refused to let his daughter see him before he died... Very sad ending for Mr Faulk.
