Mental Health & Iron Deficiency | My Story

  • Hi all and welcome back.
    This week is Mental Health Week, so I want to share my story with mental health and how my mental health was affected by my low iron deficiency. Yes, we have to talk about mental health but we also have to educate people that mental health issues are not only caused by mental health issues (if that makes sense?); there can be underlying health conditions causing your mental health issues.
    Sorry for my long absence but as I will explain in this video, when I was at my worst I did not want to do anything. But I am now feeling a lot better and I have regained my energy.
    Thank you again to Sally Jacks TV Mum for all of her informational content here on TH-cam about mental health and iron deficiency. Please, check out her channel especially the videos below to educate yourself more about iron deficiency:

    Hope you're feeling better now! It's strange how deficiencies are dismissed with the statement that usually females have low levels of "this or that". My mother has various food allergies and she is anaemic and yet the GP says it's fine. Good to hear that you were able to figure things out. Physical health and mental health are so strongly connected. Take good care

      You are absolutely right in everything you've said here 😃 yeah, it's really strange that doctors tend to dismiss deficiencies. In my opinion, deficiencies in women should be taken even more seriously because we menstruate and have hormonal imbalances, but it seems to work the other way round in medicine. Frustrating is all I can say. Thank you so much and I hope you mom is feeling better and that she's getting the medical attention she needs and deserves ❤️

      @@PowerAndBalance Yes, deficiencies dictate our life and lower the quality of living and yet somehow it isn't a widely discussed topic. In fact, while I'm undergoing my H Pylori treatment, I'm realising how harsh those antibiotics can be and how your stomach flora basically stops absorbing nutrients efficiently. Although to be honest, these things didn't bother me either until I fell sick x

    • @PowerAndBalance
      @PowerAndBalance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bhavnasultana yes, that's true. I absolutely agree that until you actually experience it, it doesn't bother you but then you realize how frustrating it is and how much it can affect someone's life. There should be a more holistic approach to all this, let's hope that slowly medicine goes in this direction 😃

    Hey saw you had Pylori which is what I'm actually going through atm, I just finished my treatment yesterday and wanted to ask,did you continue having any stomach issues after the treatment was finished that took longer to heal post treatment and if so how is your stomach now adays

    • @PowerAndBalance
      @PowerAndBalance  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Post treatment for about two weeks or so I felt bloated, but to be fair this could have been due to my diet. I was eating way to much protein and that was most likely causing the bloating and stomach pain at times. When I actually cut down my protein and upped my carbs, I have felt better than ever. I think I just have a sensitive stomach because even now my stomach gets set off by certain foods, but the thing is you just have to work on your diet and work on rebuilding that gut flora. Hope this helps 😃

      Have you been taking iron supplements to get your ferritin up? I didn't have cold feet and hands but I did have pale skin and hair loss. There are a variety of stomach issues out there so it doesn't have to be h. Pylori, it could be candida (fungus overgrowth) or something absolutely different, food intolerances perhaps?

    Do you feel better now? My ferritin is 3. I feel awful and have been trying supplements but it’s messing my stomach up. Now my doctor wants to do a infusion but I’m scared. I would love to not feel like death though:)
    Did you have trouble breathing and fast heart rate? I’ve had that a lot lately and it’s scary, tremors too:(

    • @PowerAndBalance
      @PowerAndBalance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I feel a lot better now! 😃 Your ferritin is super low, the guidelines say it should be between 10-291. In a healthy woman it should be minimum a 100. I've heard that infusions are very effective and start working quite quickly. Given how low your ferritin is and that supplements are not working for you, you should certainly go for the infusion. There are side effects to getting an infusion but they're just the regular side effects as with taking iron supplements, so you might get some or might not get any. Certainly it's better than the long-term effects of anaemia. So make sure to talk to your doctor and get them to give you as much information as they can about the infusion so that you can make an informed choice for yourself.
      Yes, I had trouble breathing, kind of like anxiety that was giving me trouble breathing, and I had heart palpitations very randomly throughout the day. It was scary, but after taking my suplements for about two-three weeks I started feeling better. I wouldn't advise you to not do anything about this, this is a really serious thing. Try the infusion and see how you feel after a week. You may need several infusions to bring your levels up back to normal. I hope you feel better soon x

      Took me about two months. You have to be persistent and make sure your doctor knows how you feel. My ferritin was also low at 43, for a healthy woman it should be 100. The thing is here in the UK the range is 10-291, so in the doctors eyes you're still good but you are not because 14 is already extremely low. I would try to contact the iron clinic. It's a private clinic but they will be able to help. If you type it in on Google you will get their co tact details 😃 let me know how it goes and I hope that you get better soon ❤️

      My ferritin was 9 last time they checked , but GP says my “iron stores have always been on the lower side as far back as they have results for over 5 years and that it’s likely just normal for me, and that there is really no evidence to suggest that there’s some kind of “ideal” ferritin level across populations”, now that my periods got even heavier due to fibroids, I really notice the effects of low iron - exhaustion, migraines, heart palpitations , but the thing is I struggled with severe mental health issues on and off since childhood due to a lot of trauma, which can also make you feel physically exhausted , and also chronic stress leads to estrogen dominance which then leads to fibroids and heavy periods, so I always focused on my mental health anyway , but didn’t realise up until now that there is a connection with iron and mental health too. Thank you for making this video 🙏

I have done my ECG echocardiogram endoscopy and what not... Doctor said my heart was fine.... All the doctors are saying that I have in society and anxiety is causing me e these weird pains all over my body and specially my chest pain.. somewhat I was not ready to believe them... I I'm having extremely dry lips... It's sometimes even bleed when the skin comes off, kind of dry skin. And people tell me that I looked very unwell... I got my vitamin test done.... And my vitamin d level is 12.... Dr never asked me for a bit test but can my chest pain and other pain all around my body and specially my wrist and my feet can be a sign of vitamin d deficiency... Can vitamin d deficiency at a level of 12 be so severe
    Also I have had breathing issues now a days... Strange tightness in the body. ... Lump in the throat feeling... And upset stomach... And I'm also having lump in the throat feeling.. can dis be due to vit d or calcium deficiency or iron deficiency? I have done my B12 test also which are normal....
