I absolutely love how you explain everything. I have watched so many videos on thyroid, and I’m getting just the basic understandings of it. But when I watch your videos, it’s worded in such a way that the lightbulb goes off and I get it now. Maybe it’s the patience that you have for explaining everything, but you truly are helping people. Thank you for what you do!

My ferritin level is a 6 and I have not felt well for a long time. I went to many doctors who would do blood work and say I was fine. Finally I got a doctor who tested me for ferritin. I had no idea what ferritin was.
I get iron infusions for my anemia, i cannot tolerate iron tablets, i have hashimottos that has now switched to graves. I am still wating for that doc to get me back in for my iron infusions. Autoimmunity is fun
Wild. I just came up with a ferritin level of 7 and slight hypothyroidism (deemed “not clinically significant,” however). What I have gleaned from your videos is to combine an iron supplement with vitamin C. I did get dietary sources as well. Thank you for these videos!
This was so helpful! I had no idea iron/ferritin levels and thyroid were connected. I’ve had low ferritin for years, and after pressing my doctor who said there was nothing wrong with me, I got it tested and was at a 9 😬 he finally admitted I was iron deficient, go figure. Ive also had all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. I’ve been taking organ supplements and betaine Hcl and my numbers are rising 😊 can’t wait to feel normal again!
I've been wondering why I seem to have stopped being able to absorb my thyroid pills. I feel like I'm low on iron, so this was very helpful! Thank you! Drs never take me seriously.

It really depends on other factors - for example, if you have thyroid issues, chronic stress, autoimmunity, etc, 63 could be lower than optimal for you.

Hi. My Ferritin is 12. Was much lower last year. I also have low hemoglomin and low iron. It has affected my thyroid hormones as the antibody test for it is zero. I'm feeling really tired all the time with anxiety, headaches, dizziness, can't sleep that well or concentrate. Have dry skin on hands. Started taking vitami c and iron tablets from a month ago. Was prescribed 100mg of iron per day. I cant say im feeling great yet. Should i increase? I have good days and bad days. After i gave birth in 2021 i started feeling like that but ignored it as i though i was just too tired around the baby. Just recently got tested. How long will it take to get better? I don't want to feel this way anymore 😢

I had Grave's. Did radioactive iodine so now I'm on synthroid (for about 33 years now). My ferritin is low. Since I don't have a functioning thyroid anymore, how would my thyroid influence the level of ferritin? Can it be the other way around too?
Thyroid function is all about active thyroid hormone (T3) interacting with the thyroid hormone receptors on your cells - so in theory you should be "making up for" your lack of innate thyroid hormone production by taking Synthroid (T4). Unfortunately, the conversion of T4 to T3 isn't always efficient, or other factors can mess up the receptivity of your cells to thyroid hormone. Like I detailed in the video, iron plays a role in this conversion and receptivity, which is how ferritin can impact thyroid hormone function.
Oh my God, that was so clear! Your way of connecting events is very good and unforgettable. Even though I'm studying medicine, I didn't understand the topic until I watched the video, thank you! Just one question: if the hemoglobin level, hematocrit level, and red blood cells level are normal, does that mean I don't need to do a ferritin test, right? Thank you dr ❤
So glad you found it helpful - I do often recommend ferritin testing even in the presence of "normal" blood labs, simply because it gives a better understanding of iron reserves, which can fluctuate.
Hi! I have gotten the diagnosis hypothyroidism, since my TSH is high. My other thyroid-levels are normal though, so now neither me or my doctor are sure that I actually have hypo, or if something else is causing my high TSH. (I’ve been referred to a endocrinologist but sadly they don’t want to help me.) What do you think? I also have low ferritin, at first I had 7, but it went up a bit after supplementing. I had to stop taking the supplements though because they made me feel so bad. Not GI, but worse fatigue and I actually felt so sick that I felt like I was dying. I also have high hemoglobin even though my ferritin’s low, so I’m not sure if it’s safe to use iron supplements or what dose I should use. Any thoughts? I have been very sick for about 5 years but it has gotten worse and worse. I’m homebound. I struggle with chronic fatigue and pain amongst other things. I have very many symptoms. I don’t feel like I’m getting any help or moving forward with my doctor.
Hi, there - really sorry to hear you're struggling. While I can't speak to your specific situation, I can say that "optimal" ranges for thyroid hormones (like free T3, for example) are different than "normal" ranges, and sometimes this can explain why some folks have all the symptoms of hypothyroid with numbers that are within the "normal" range - it's not normal for YOU. If you're looking for more personalized input, consider signing up for a consultation with me - here's some more info: bit.ly/drkate1on1
Do you think just below optimal iron and ferritin can contribute? My ferritin was 76 and my iron is just borderline low… but I’ve had extreme brain fog and fatigue hair loss can’t lose weight for a couple of years and also just borderline low thryoid.
@@DrKateLyzengaDean thank you! I’ve been digging soooo much lol. Done so many things. Iron is something I hadn’t looked into! I did see that if you have thryoid issues ferritin at 100 is needed. Thank you for your response
Why does the information on thyroid function only relate to HYPOthyroid? I suffer with HYPERthyroid issues and researching the possible root causes has not yielded much information 😢
I have a question- I have increased my ferritin with diet and dessicated beef liver. I started at 13 - when I was still having periods- now I'm post-menopause and up to 60. Do you think I would benefit from infusion of iron to help my thyroid? My TSH is 2.56, normal T3 and T4, my peroxidase is high 12 and thyroglobulin is less than 1.
While I can't speak to your specific situation here, you are welcome to apply for a Functional Case Review and I'd be happy to analyze this data and make recommendations - here's some info about the Case Review process: www.drkateld.com/kmld-case-review-info-page
Hello! You can see the enzymes I like by clicking the link and signing up for a Fullscript account - all the details are there: us.fullscript.com/plans/drkateld-ferritin-boosting-supplements
It appears the other way around it is low thyroid T3 that cuts back Eritropoetin from the kidneys to the marrow and because of that the red cells are deficient, lack of red cells makes for low ferritin and transferrin . Anaemia is the result of that and the general disablement of the whole body.
@ I know, it was a purposeful stopping of my 150mg of thyroxine that dragged me down and they say I have MDS. But I went back on Thyroxine and my figures are SLOWLY clawing upwards after being forced into red cell transfusion . The Medical profession seem very set in their own rote.
My ferritin levels are high, currently down from 1300 to about 650, but still way above the norm. How do I lower my ferritin to get it to normal levels? It definitely affects my fatigue level in my daily activities. Any help?
Elevated ferritin levels can be caused by an inflammatory issue - metabolic syndrome or blood sugar problems like type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver, autoimmune diseases, or even an underlying infection can all cause elevated ferritin. Getting it to normal levels requires assessing and addressing the root cause of the inflammation.
Very helpful video Dr. Kate! I recently got my blood work done and ferritin was 17.3 μg/l, TSH 0.28 mIU/l and vitamin D 69.1 nmol/l. I have felt very fatigued recently and also brain fog. I have now taken iron supplements (Ferrous bisglycinate) for few days but they cause nausea and constipation. What would you recommend? Also greetings from Estonia!
Hi! You could try taking your ferrous bisglycinate every-other day, with a high-fiber meal, and add digestive enzymes to make sure it breaks down properly (to avoid the nausea/constipation). More details in my ferritin checklist: www.drkateld.com/ferritin-checklist-signup
That's a tough one! Malabsorption is really common with gastric bypass - and it can also impact the gut microbiome. I'd suggest focusing on things that improve absorption (vitamin C, specific probiotics) - you can find a few of those strategies in the checklist: www.drkateld.com/ferritin-checklist-signup
This is spot on for me. I am a 58 year old guy but started feeling fatigued and more anxious last Fall and it got really bad during the holidays especially in regards to sleep. My CBC results were in the mid normal but I paid to get a vitamin B test and it included an iron panel and everything was low normal but Ferritin of 25 ug/ml and B12 of 1483. I started taking 20mg Heme iron every morning with 2mg copper for cerruloplasmin. I have low stomach acid that I treat with Betaine HCL and Apple Cider vinegar plus I was taking a tom of Zinc since COVID started. My theory was that the Zinc was blocking iron and copper absorption plus low stomach acid also contributed to be not getting minerals from foods. I also started taking liquid ionic minerals (magnesium, copper, zinc, and calcium) too. This week my B12 was around 800 and my Ferritin was 61 ug/ml. I have more energy and my sleep and anxiety are better. My hair thinned alot and it has stopped shedding as much. My target is 100 ug/ml and hopefully my hair will start regrowing. The low ferritin definitely caused me to become hypothyroidal.
That’s why you test for ferritin and vitamin D deficiency right out of the gate. If it’s low you supplement, and micro doses of iron, monitor testing to make sure you don’t get jaundice.
I’m supplementing, but absolutely NOTHING is happening. No improved test levels. No symptoms going away. I can’t take iron tabs without severe gastric issues. 🤷🏼♀
Mam my daughter is 17 years her TSH level is high , hemoglobin level is 13,iron level is 105 but ferritin level is 12 she is facing hairl loss . What do you suggest we should go for iron infusion our dermatologist don't take it seriously please guide me
I had necrotising fasciitis in 2013 - 2 big ops and a huge open wound that took 10 months and another op to close. I wasn’t given a blood transplant as my blood loss left me just above the minimum threshold (UK practice) I was given 3 months of iron tablets, but since then, my Ferritin has struggled between 14 & 21 and I have had symptoms of anaemia on and off while having normal haemoglobin/ serum.iron. Is it possible that the blood loss caused this deficiency that I have never recovered from. I was subsequently dx with Hypothyroidism and I have RRMS. XX
That sounds like a terrible ordeal - so sorry you had to go through this. It is not only possible but likely that blood loss is one of the root causes for your current deficiency - but I'm also suspicious that the antibiotics you used could've caused microbiome problems that may also be contributing to your lack of recovery in terms of ferritin!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean Highly possible Dr Kate. I was on Meropenem, “a carbopenem antibiotic of last resort “, and Clarithromycin all very high dose as it was Strep A type NF. X
My ferritin right now is 4 or 5 along with everything else iron related being critical low or critical high.. I just am over it all. Bit sure about thyroid
Thank you for this video. I have hypothyroidism which was caused by extremely low Ferritin (11), how long do you typically see the thyroid symptoms resolve AFTER getting the ferritin level over 100? Is there a set level?
I should add that my thyroid WAS perfectly functioning, but I donated blood six times in 14 months and it destroyed my ferritin and thus, my thyroid. In short, will it come back on it's own once the ferritin is restored?
Likely, months, not weeks. If ferritin was that low for that long, it could take awhile for the thyroid function to return. Sorry that happened, but keep pressing forward!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean Thank you for the reply! Also sorry for another question, but in the meantime would supplementing with a low dose of T3 or T4 be helpful or harmful in this interim period?
That would depend on a few factors, so unfortunately I can't make a specific recommendation for you. But it would be worth discussing with your doctor!
Everybody needs to remember to salt your food with iodized salt. The average person needs 1-2 teaspoons per day or more if you have a highly physical job or are athletic. Also, up your iodine with drops in your drinks. Every cell needs proper iodine to function. It's the cheapest way to help your health and increase energy.
I don't think it's helpful to generalize something like iodine consumption because some folks should be careful about getting too much iodine - it can be a problem for folks with autoimmunity and certain thyroid conditions.

It could certainly contribute - but that's a decent ferritin...I'd be digging for a deeper root cause if I were you.
@@DrKateLyzengaDean thank you! I’ve been digging soooo much lol. Done so many things. Iron is something I hadn’t looked into! I did see that if you have thryoid issues ferritin at 100 is needed. Thank you for your response
You're so very welcome! Agreed - with thyroid issues, a higher level is optimal. Can't hurt to get it where it should be! 👍🏼
Great info. Thank you 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Why does the information on thyroid function only relate to HYPOthyroid? I suffer with HYPERthyroid issues and researching the possible root causes has not yielded much information 😢
It's on my list to address this!
@DrKateLyzengaDean much appreciated!
Hi! Great video! Should I still take zinc. You mentioned zinc helps the thyroid along with iron.
Zinc is a great idea - especially if your RBC Zinc blood test is sub-optimal.
Thanks
You're welcome!
My last Ferritin count, 5 years ago, was 2,200!
Wowza!
Hi dear my ferritin is 17 ,iron is low and TSH is 4.88 . What would you recommend?
You can see my suggestions in the free ferritin boosting checklist here: www.drkateld.com/ferritin-checklist-signup
Thank you
You're welcome!
Thank you very much Dr. Kate. Hello from Ecuador. I have one question. Which digestive enzymes do you recommend? Thanks once again
The feedback loop goes both ways 👍🏼
Thank you Dr Kate! Very valuable information presented in layman's terms. Greetings from the African continent :-)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you great info.
You're welcome! I'm glad you found it useful
I’ve had ferritin as low as 4 I also have celiac disease.
Celiac disease and absorption issues go hand-in-hand!
How do you get enough ferritin when you had a gastric bypass? I can't keep enough vitamins and minerals in my body even taking supplements
Take a comprehensive digestive enzyme
I have 2 ferritin level & .63 TSH level..
That's a low ferritin!
Which do you think is better heme or non heme iron?
Heme iron is better absorbed!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean thanks
You're welcome! Glad I could help.
Ferritin plays such a big role in thyroid health! Glad you were able to get things sorted out!
That’s why you test for ferritin and vitamin D deficiency right out of the gate. If it’s low you supplement, and micro doses of iron, monitor testing to make sure you don’t get jaundice.
I agree - it's best to test! Not sure why you'd be worried about jaundice with iron supplementation, however...it's not a common side effect.
I’m supplementing, but absolutely NOTHING is happening. No improved test levels. No symptoms going away. I can’t take iron tabs without severe gastric issues. 🤷🏼♀
Talk to your Doctor about ferritin infusions!
Hi dear , i m hypothyroid and herital hernia just diagnosed sometimes i wokeup choking in night time like a shock u think it is bcoz of?.
It's really impossible to tell - definitely need to see your doctor about that! Best of luck!
Mam my daughter is 17 years her TSH level is high , hemoglobin level is 13,iron level is 105 but ferritin level is 12 she is facing hairl loss . What do you suggest we should go for iron infusion our dermatologist don't take it seriously please guide me
Sounds like there could be multiple triggers for her hair loss - including thyroid. I think an endocrinologist would be a good next step!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean our endocrinologist just give her multivitamin it's not helpful
I had necrotising fasciitis in 2013 - 2 big ops and a huge open wound that took 10 months and another op to close. I wasn’t given a blood transplant as my blood loss left me just above the minimum threshold (UK practice)
I was given 3 months of iron tablets, but since then, my Ferritin has struggled between 14 & 21 and I have had symptoms of anaemia on and off while having normal haemoglobin/ serum.iron.
Oof - that is very low! Be sure to download my ferritin checklist - lots of good options in here: www.drkateld.com/ferritin-checklist-signup
Thank you for this video. I have hypothyroidism which was caused by extremely low Ferritin (11), how long do you typically see the thyroid symptoms resolve AFTER getting the ferritin level over 100? Is there a set level?
I just got my ferritin to 90 a week ago with a fourth infusion but have not had any symptom relief as of yet.
@@DrKateLyzengaDean People should be instructed to take copper with zinc to make sure that their iron doesn't deplete. So many videos leave that out.
Hello mam. I'm harsh ,26 yrs old .. I'm a vegetarian..My ferritin is 29ng/ml and iron serum is normal 89 ug/dl nd tsh is high 6.1 uIU/ml ... dr kate can you get itchy skin with low ferritan i have just been put on thyroid med but my thyroid was broderline but very itchy skin and my ferritan was down abit now on iron feel abit better but my thyroid was boderline ad dr did not want t put me on med l took it because o itch and low ferritain was i wrong as i have peciousious anemina and on b12 injections please help thankyou
Itchy skin can be a symptom of many things - including thyroid problems.
I have slowly lost the ability to sweat. Ferritin levels are at 35 ng/ml. Could this be the cause of my in ability to sweat?
Hmmm - I don't know of any connections between sweating and ferritin levels, but if I come across anything I'll check back!
Not sweating can mean your detox pathways are blocked! Hydrate and eat as nutrient dense as possible
@@DrKateLyzengaDean how about Sjögren’s disease? I found a journal article stating that people with this disease have decreased sweat production. Just tested positive for SS-A and SS-B
thyroid regulates sweating. When my tsh dropped to “undetectable” levels 0.03, I couldn’t sweat & my naturally oily skin was dry.
Increase iodine from lugols solution or kelp +selenium
What happens if you have Ferratin of 17 but increased iron saturation and iron levels. How come the excess iron isn’t being stored?
Sometimes it's because of other micronutrient insufficiencies, or because your iron levels are fluctuating month-to-month and you have no reserves
Does low ferritin contribute to hyper- thyroid as well?
I have not investigated this, but I'll let you know if I do!
Yeah I had to do my OWN labs to figure it out!!! Ridiculous... doctors never helped me!!!
So frustrating - but I'm glad you were able to figure it out!
I just got home from my 6th iron infusion and found this video.
Wow! That's such a coincidence!
What is your recommendation is it worth it ?
My ferritin is at 42

Hypothyroidism also causes less formation of Ferritin.
By what mechanism?
By less expression of Ferritin at cells.
Sheez beautiful and really good
You're too kind! Thanks for watching!
Low or sub optimal ferritin can test normal on conventional labs? 🤯
Obviously Ferritin tests are outdated and innaccurate.
With all the technology advancements we cant update our medical testing ?! 🤨
We certainly would benefit from updating our normal ranges for blood labs, that's for sure!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean
Wonder 🤔 who has the power to upgrade conventional labs to reflect optimal representation ?
Wouldn't it be great for a billionaire or trillionaire to make that happen 🙏🏼😎❣️
