    Mark, you sure know how to put out a quality, fun, and informative video. I suspect your subscriber numbers will rapidly
    increase. I hope you will elaborate on the iron falsing in other videos to come. I'd like to see you ''call it'' when you come to a possible falsing target, and see how close to 100% you can come. Thanks for the very good video!

      Thank you Kenny! I absolutely will continue to demonstrate the iron delay and I really need to test this in all modes and tweak the recovery speed a bit to see if it gets worse or better. Much more to come on this and I will undoubtedly try and "Call It" every time just so we can all learn to trust this theory. Thank you for the view and comment!

    Thank you for the tip about the delayed audio! I just got to use my new manticore last weekend, and I'm trying to figure it out. Since these don't have target sizing, a quick trick for aluminum cans is just raising your coil 6 to 10 inches above the target and if it's still making a loud tone, it's going to be a can.
    And thank you for covering up your holes. It drives me crazy when I get out into the hills around here and see holes all over the place.
    If you're ever around the 80 corridor, maybe I'll see you around.

    That’s an excellent observation, and apparently repeatable that you made concerning iron and the delay factor in the audio signal. Every new machine that comes out, always needs software updates to pinpoint problem areas, but for $1600 I’m still on the fence and waiting to see more results from users. I’m currently a Nokta legend and XP Deus2 user, so the manticore is going to have to prove itself in an exceptional way for me to fork out that kind of money. Thanks very much for an informative video! 👍

    I'm also a tone person. I have many hours on the 800 in all types of soil and I've also noticed the iron delay on it as well as a tone change on aluminum, versus coins. From what I've seen so far, I'm leaning towards the 900 instead of the Manticore and only for the waterproofing.

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly don't think the waterproofing will be an issue again at all, they completely redesigned the housing internally and it was at the top of the list of the R&D and design team. I'm sure that both the Manticore and Equinox 900 will be fine now underwater. But it makes total sense for you to be attracted to the successor of the 800 since you're so used to it. It's very hard to convey hearing tones in a certain way through a video!!! Thank you for the view and comment.

    Hi Mark, thanks for your video. I just started using the Equinox 900 after 37 years of a Whites 6000 DI Pro. I have to admit I'm underwhelmed (except for the depth increase.) My biggest frustration is the chatter/chirping of the machine. I used to be able to hunt with low threshold, fairly quiet, and iron was choppy...everything else was good. Easy. These new machines are the opposite of that. I hear it on your video also...every swing has 2,3,4 chirps...some high tones, some low tones and some seem repeatable. Why don't you dig those or double check those? How do you know those are junk? What am I missing? Even my beach trip I found the hunting to be very slow because I stall on each blip and chirp, going over it to see if its repeatable, and it takes 3 times as long to search because of that. Please help before I return to my old machine lol.

    Thanks for the video. Your machine sounds exactly like mine does in the nails...Some people have never hunted in old mining camps full of square nails and are not used to hearing a machine false like that. On the bottle cap there are a few stragglers that will pop out side that disked out area right were your did. They always are a cap. I noticed you did not engage the horse shoe much when interrogating a target...probably because of the hot soil and proximity of the targets to iron? They will probably have sizing on the CTX replacement...

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will be honest and say that I mostly only hunt in old mining camps and specifically target the 1850's camps for California Gold Rush buckles, buttons, etc. I never encounter bottle caps and this one caught me a little off guard. It's not a problem for me day to day, if it was I would definitely try and notch it out. But I am sure that there are many park hunters here and it is a huge concern for them. The first couple videos I ran the machine open with the horseshoe off in all-metal but for this video I was more focused on the nails and tones, but wish I would have for others who may not have seen any of my other Manticore videos. If I ever take this machine out and leave the trusty CTX at home, I will be in all-metal the whole time. I run my CTX open at all sites and I am used to it (Anyone who might think this video is bad, you should hear what I hear on the CTX in the heavy iron wide open!! It can be maddening if your not used to it). I am sure your correct about The Minelab "Ultimate" (the new successor to the CTX-3030) since we already have it on the 3030. Still going to run it by the engineers at Minelab for something to consider on the Manticore. Thank you for the view and comment!

  • @frankconsidine5989
    @frankconsidine5989 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I run a ctx so i understand what your saying about the delay.

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well there is definitely nothing in the owners manual or even here on TH-cam where people talk about this on the CTX but anyone who has some serious experience and hours logged figures it out pretty quick. If I made a video of me swinging my CTX in a site running it the way I do . . . they would be concerned about how many targets I pass up that may sound good to the viewer. I can hear iron very well on the CTX, as well as density, shape and size. It's a 3D experience for me and I have a good feel for what's in the ground under the coil but that's because I know those tones so very well. Even just changing the headphones or making any change whatsoever to the programs I use would mess me up pretty good! 😜 Thanks for the view and comment!

  • @detectordie
    @detectordie ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm surprised how much differently we run machines Mark. I like to hear it all. Maybe that's why I'm deaf, lol

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Ray on my CTX (I know Kevin H is the same way) I/we run them wide open 29/30 sens with a threshold, lot's of audio coming in, you hear literally everything. But I have to keep in mind that we are the minority as most probably want the machine to hear good targets and not have to listen to "all" of the audio detail possible, so I have to see if it's even capable of that by running it as most users would. If for example I would have ran it in all-metal (horseshoe) in this video so the viewers could hear the iron grunts, it would have distracted many from hearing the tones we were concentrating on, it was bad enough that I had the threshold up to what some might call an annoying volume. In this video I am trying to run it like most would so I can see how they are going to experience using it. Today I was out with Tom at the ranch and was in All-Metal the whole day! Threshold, Iron Grunts, EMI and all!! lol 😜🤪

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Rick, yes, it's still a thing. However with so many fewer nails falsing through I don't have to apply those audio tests to my targets anymore. Like I said in my video(s) I learned this on my CTX-3030 and it has become second nature now. I have never used any other machine ever made (to date) that is as good as the CTX-3030 in ignoring iron and giving clues to iron that is not being filtered. CTX with the 6" coil is still the king to me . . . but I do know that the speed of the processor in circuit causes that machine to miss some ferrous targets that are being masked by non-ferrous co-located. In a new virgin site I am always going to take my CTX in day 1 and it will essentially cherry pick all the good stuff quickly, then I have to come back next time with a Manticore, Deus II, Legend, Equinox 900, etc to creep through the heavy iron. Thank you for your continued support and kind words, it really does mean a lot to me!!

  • @jimknarr

    I'm a new subscriber and have been enjoying your videos. With the Manticore and CTX3030, is there an easy trick to tell the difference between a square nail vs a large iron relic? Like you, I like the hand-forged iron relics like you found here but would like to pass over the square nails.

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One huge advantage on the CTX for large iron relics like picks, axe heads, etc. is it has a target overload alert feature that warns you it's a big target, so that helps. I don't think we have that feature on the Manticore (yet). But to answer the question, one the CTX we also have pinpoint sizing which when turned on gives you a large target indication on the graph to let you know it's big iron. Just out detecting in early sites though, if you don't use the pinpoint sizing or it's too deep to overload, you will just be caught by surprise when you look down in your hole and see an axe head! Trust me, I find lot's of them with the CTX. They are fun to find and admire! Thanks for the view and great question!

You can find my email in the description of all of my videos I would like for you to send me an email so we can connect and try to get out through some detecting in that area soon. Fair warning though the grass is really high right now in the California Foothills. Thanks for checking out the video and taking the time to leave a comment!

Just falls short on what is expected in the iron (so far). Thanks for the view and comment!

    The key to any machine is time using it and learning it, it takes a lot of time. Have you noticed if the delay on iron has anything to do with how that piece is laying in the ground. Curious, what is the morse code beeping I hear constantly coming from this machine? Loving your videos. Got to get a hunt together one of these days.

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wes, Merry Christmas!! Don't think it has much to do with the position in the ground, however there absolutely could be differences in the 2D trace on for example a nail standing straight up or laying sideways. The Morse code sound is a combination of both threshold breaks and iron grunts. It's a whole lot of sonic info coming in and many don't like that as it can definitely cause some ear fatigue. Not at all necessary to run it like that, it can actually run silent except for the beeps on targets. Hoping we can get out one of these days soon!

    Hey Mark. I am extremely new to metal detecting, having only just purchased my Manticore. I have stumbled across your channel and boy is it helpful, so thank you for that, I am confused about the signals that you were receiving, like Robert below, for example around the 23 minute mark (Maybe you have already answered this question but I can't find it sorry). Sweeping over the grassed area and manny signals being heard, however you considered them to be of no value. I would love to learn how you can tell the difference between a valuable signal and one that is not. In your case I would have been digging every time I heard something, and the field would have looked like Swiss cheese.

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a great question and one that is easily answered in one on one training sessions with me but to wxplain it here I would just say it's because of experience in knowing which signals to go back and swing over to recheck them. I mean it takes a certain quality of the tone to get you to stop and swing enough to get it to repeat, then more to turn 90 degrees to check it again, etc. So no real easy answer to put it in writing. I should do a video on this! Thank you for your comment and question!

  • @LorenLemcke
    @LorenLemcke ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fun fact, it's not a delay you are experiencing with iron, rather since the magnetic field lines of the EM field like to curl outwards from the centerline of the DD coil, the iron nail produces it's peak conductive response when the field lines run parallel to the length of the nail, and when running vertical it produces it's peak magnetic response. So it literally hits strongest slightly off center, just as you are observing. Same effect can happen with a vertically oriented coin.

      @@BrassMedic You will notice those 2D screen traces start in the iron zone (and are therefore muted / called iron) and then drag into non-ferrous once the object is slightly off center from the coil centerline, thus producing the 'delay' you observe :)

      That is true. It is a reason a larger coil can "see" a coin on edge better than a small coil. The secondary magnetic field generated in the coin is initially horizontal and wide, which the narrow field of the small coil can miss. A coin on edge or horizontally elongated iron (nail) generates secondary MFs in ether direction which can be interpreted as double blips or off-center blips.

    Hi Mark. I’ve been enjoying your recent videos on the manticore. I’m living vicariously thru yours and other MC owners’ vids right now. I’ve read the entire manual already a few times over lol.
    A couple observations after watching this video, with specificity to 4:35, the audio “delay” you speak of when encountering iron targets. It’s going to take a lot of words to explain this, so bear with me here……….I’ve got my own perspective on this phenomenon based on what I saw on your 2D target trace when you were explaining this “delay”……I know you understand the following details I’m about to tell you, but I thinks it’s necessary to type this for the others that watched your video (and to lay the groundwork for my thoughts).
    First, let’s examine carefully the target trace of the target at 4:35. It was a specific kind of trace that extended into both ferrous and non-FE regions of the screen. Since you weren’t hunting in horse shoe (all metal mode), the iron audio is silent, thus the part of a target trace that partially extends (or smears) into your ferrous limits boundaries will be silent, and whatever part of the trace that’s outside the ferrous limits will produce an audio response (if it’s not masked out). So the total product of any 2D trace that paints both inside and outside a ferrous limit (or discriminated/notched area of the screen) could produce this audio delay because the audio goes silent a short amount of time before becoming audible again…..if you were in horse shoe mode then you’d hear your iron low tones mixed with the audible non-ferrous tone on those specific traces that are smeared across the non-ferrous and ferrous boundaries (no loss of audio).
    This is nothing more than my perspective….too bad you can’t discuss this phenomenon with a ML engineer. Of course, this perspective would be debunked if you can still hear a delayed audio response on a target that traces 100% outside any shaded regions of your 2D display….
    Take care, my friend! 👍🏼

You get the typical red dirt we have hear in the California Gold Country. Then you have the nutrient rich soil under the canopy of the giant oak trees. And there is even a few areas where your in Native American Midden mounds. After trying to ground balance when I got there I decided to leave it in tracking just so I didn't have to chase it. If you decide to manually GB at any point at this site, you would have to hike away from the foundations quite at least 100 yards to find clean ground. By that time who knows what kind of soil your on compared to in the iron. Thanks for the View, Comment and Question!

    I own a White's Spectra V3i, and the Equinox 800. Does the Manticore or any other 'simultaneous' freq. metal detector show the freq. you are scanning, or pinpointing, or the simultaneous freq. as the V3i does and checking Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI)? The benefits of this showing on the display are overwhelming. Without this feature on a 'simultaneous' metal detector leaves an operator 'simply guessing' what the frequency is? And the operator will state my metal detector is 'chatty'. It would have to be 'chatty'? Scanning in multi 'simultaneous'? The V3i shows this on a color-coded graph allowing the operator to determine what the freq. is that is causing the most EMI. Likewise, what freq. would cause the iron to false to make any necessary adjustments. I intend to upgrade to a newer detector; however, I will wait till one comes out with the features showing the freq. in all modes. I subscribed!

    • @BrassMedic
      @BrassMedic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, this is a great comment and question!!! So, unfortunately we do not know the exact frequencies that are being transmitted in Multi-Freq mode on the Manticore (or the Equinox or the CTX) Minelab considers that proprietary information and does not want to share that, nor display it to the user. Instead to overcome EMI there are several features of the machine and circuit that try to eliminate it at the most common sources such as in the coil wire, grounding and shielding on the circuit board and of course the Noise Cancel feature which is designed to do what your Whites V3i is suggesting but in the Minelab it's happening under the hood. How often do you run across this with your Whites V3i and does it always work when you duck the trouble frequency(s)? I did like that feature on the V3i and the color coding, etc. That was ground breaking technology when it came out. It was the first Super Machine we all ever saw. Thanks for the view, the question and for subbing! 🤠

Addendum: You inquired about "[H]ow often do you run across this with your Whites V3i and does it always work when you duck the trouble frequency(s)?: Ante. I have never encountered any problem with E M I. I found earthmansurfer69 How to set up the White's V3i helpful. The newer metal detectors do not have the ability to configure a metal detector. The best part of the V3i is the fact that it teaches you metal detecting better than any other? It will teach you patience.

    I call it a drag. It drags the audio from being iron it's IMO a curse on Minelab detectors. It's not a bang or a slap it hits and drags the signal even though it's a false signal. I used to tell when I was FALSING on those old bimetal bottle caps with a DFX it was the tell take sign of those older bottle caps that are impossible to disc out by most detectors.
    Actually when I hunted with an older pulse inductor it kind of gave that sound and even though pulse inductors back then didn't disc I could hear the difference in a coin or a ring to a nail

    same conclsive determination is avaialble by using pinopoint--wide or narrow. start with your basics, master... pinpoint tells you the size and context. ...also, this fulll cross you are doing is not necessarry--just a slight angle will miss fewer masked targets while still telling you about the consistency. a full cross is for something out in the open--no nearby iron. the "lag " is a good tip--I put it in my Anfibio book but its not a stand alone. --often reveals were you have cross feeds from a bunch of nails or wire. difference bettween small and deep? that's something else that piinpoint tells you. the tech wont do everything for you. sorry to be a pain but I call em like I see em. this is what the NOX started eveyone things that basics skills are a waste of time lol.

      Right now D2 is king of the hill. I live the build quality, design and menu system on the Manticore, it's a design masterpiece but until they can get the performance issues ironed out, D2 is better. I would rate the Manticore better in value as far as build quality, tones, design, ergonomics, comfort and balance of swing, GUI (graphical user interface) in the menu and depth! But in performance D2 is better right now. Thank you for the fantastic question!! Happy New Years! 🤠
