What the fuck noobs! Did u even listen to the former dream theatre drummer Mike portnoy..?? He is still the drum living legend... ... Go watch him. first
I love Mangini's facial expressions during his solo. He looks like he just woke up from a coma and is thinking "is this drumming? I hope this is drumming". He's a great performer.
Not sure about now, but he used to have absolutely insane let's call it drum kit. It was basically a big room (garage alike) with so many drums everywhere that all the cymbals were hanging from the ceiling because there was no room for them to stand on the ground.
I saw that video, and actually made a comment about how glad I was that Mike was picked. I think that Marco looks almost spastic in that audition. No offense to his playing, but I don't agree with his style of visual entertainment.
I seen Mike Mangini live with Steve Vai and thought to myself...Steve found someone as good on drums as he is on guitar. What a concert!!! Mangini is amazing. On another level that only years of practice could get you.
Always impressed by the way Myung looks like he's out for a stroll while playing 20 complex notes a second. He always looks more relaxed than Petrucci.
Let me tell you this, I have the DVD, and a little bit later, I saw him struggling ( meaning a frustrated face) in Breaking All Illusions, a little bit later in the concert. Maybe he sometimes feels like the years are getting on to him.
Dude, I'm high as shit on edibles and I now get what the drum solo is about. It itself is part of the "meaning" in the song, a story of espionage and a plight to gain an edge in a war without end. His solo is them cranking up the Enigma Machine. It sounds like a chaotic locomotive almost with bells and whistles, and pistons that churn while it computes. Then it starts to build, gets more and momentus and starts to resolve not melodically but rhythmically, with the polyrhythmic limb pattern near the end. Finally there's some even churning, before a "pinball machine sound effect" type of final result, where the decoded message is finally spit out of the machine. God dammit Mike, people need to appreciate what you bring to this band a little more.
Been following Mangini for years, he is outstanding. A modern day Terry Bozzio..and the coolest guy you ever want to meet..very humble. My favorite ever!!

Neetigya Saxena That is not true, music created with this level of precision in mind requires massive amount of effort to memorize. That said, the reason why they remember this all is that they practice and perform hundreds of times every year.
I love watching Mike Mangini play drums. His expressions make me laugh everytime, especially during the drum solo. It looks like he's thinking "Oh look at that tom, that'll sound nice if I hit it now. OOH and that one too! Dude! Have you seen this splash!?". It looks hilarious but man can he drum.

So Dream Theater replaced a drummer named Mike, with... a drummer named Mike. I don't imagine things like that happen often lol. Regarding the 2 Mike's, I enjoy the drum work of both.
