If he plays with his own creativity, someone would shout at him : "why dont you play like Portnoy".. and then if he plays tight (as Portnoy play), others would also shout at him : "why did you play like a robot".. skill wise, no one ever could argue Mangini's skill.. he's a professor, drum player for multi-years, ever held the most hit in a minute, and also he has good attitude.. So please stop comparing both of them.. just enjoy and respect their music after Portnoy's era..
Who cares, now they know what giving creative liberty to Mangini can bring... DOT is one of their best albums and it comes mostly for what he brought up to the album. Pale Blue Dot idea came from him
Wednesday mike mangini is objectively an exceptional drummer. this is literally just nitpicking, and to be honest it’s getting ridiculous. personally, i think it’d be cool if people considered looking at mangini for who he is as a musician, instead of making constant comparisons to portnoy.
can't help myself to notice that NOONE in the crowd is sticking his/her phone to record the concert to never watch it again. Just a hall full of music enthusiasts enjoying the moment and gathering memories.
LaBrie still has the ability to sound really good at a live show, the problem is that it only takes about 10-14 shows during a tour to totally wear out his voice, and his vocal chords don't recover like they used to. On top of this they play 2-4 shows in the same amount of days in most cities they go to which doesn't help at all. I had the pleasure of seeing them live at the 4th show of the European leg of "The Astonishing" tour and he hit every single goddamned note perfectly, it was amazing as fuck. If you want the best DT experience see them early in a tour, when they're still fresh and have had a while to recover from the last tour.
He hits the notes flawlessly but otherwise he sounds like he's wailing which.. sucks. early 90s James was epic and I could put up with him after but after Portnoy was booted.. I only watch when drunk n nostalgic
if I were in his position, I would not use my voice on tour except for showtime. I'd get some post it notes or an ipad and write down if I need to communicate. people pay a lot of money for tickets to see these guys, they deserve a good performance no matter which part of the tour it is.

I don't know why people still arguing about those 2 Mikes. I mean come on man, it's 2018, it's been 8 years and you guys are still talking about that shit? If you hate one of them's playing, just don't watch or listen. Dream Theater chose Mangini for their drummer, they wanted him. And yes I don't like his drums sound, but what could I do? I'm just a fan, even though I'm screaming "Brings Portnoy back!!" a million damn times, Portnoy won't be their drummer again. It's useless. So I must adapt to what Dream Theater has now. Both great drummers are great i agree.It's all about what you prefer.Portnoy was more flashy in concert but did make mistakes and dropped a lot of sticks but still gave interesting music to his performance.Mangini is more technically skilled and makes little to no mistakes and some people liken that to being too robotic.

It’s quite simple. People don’t like change. We like convention. We like comfort. We like familiarity. We like to get what we expect. Mike Portnoy was a member of DT for 25 years. So sure, die hard DT fans are going to compare Portnoy to Mangini. But in reality, nothing remains the same forever. So revel in the thought that we had Portnoy with DT for 25 years making some of the best progressive rock music ever. Now it’s Mangini’s time. He’s an awesome accomplished drummer. Sure he’s not Portnoy, but why would anyone expect him to be? Mangini has his own identity, his own style, and his own techniques. So enough bitching and complaining about what was and start enjoying what is.
Mike Mangini is a phenomenal drummer and when he respects the material Portnoy composed over the years, his execution sets him apart. It's spot on without any of the inconsistencies Portnoy has when playing live. What I particularly don't like about him as a drummer - and that's true for anything pre-DT as well - is his "stylistic" choices when it comes to coming up with drum parts. It's less about "how can I complement the music in an interesting way?" and more about "how can I make this look impressive from a technical standpoint?" and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just that me and a lot of other people don't like this approach. You gotta understand something about Mangini: nothing about his playing is traditional. You understand this a lot better when you play drums yourself. If you want me to draw a parallel, take any guitar player and compare it to Tosin Abasi from Animals as Leaders. Even the way he thinks about guitar as an instrument is completely out of the ordinary and that's what Mangini is all about. That's why you get comments from people saying "Wow, he can play this with one hand" or "Why does he have to have so many hi-hats?" In short, Portnoy approaches drumming from a musical standpoint, playing within the constraints of his own technical limitations. Mangini to his own mind also approaches it musically, but his mindset is on another level that musicality to him might have an entirely different meaning and that alone makes him a niche composer that not everyone will enjoy.
Can anybody else name ANY band 4 Musicians (and a 50+ yr Old singer) that can do THIS ? I didn't think so....for 25 years !! THE BEST EVER... ! PERIOD .

The problem is that during the Mangini era, all the production (and that includes the final drum sound) was by John Petrucci. Unlike when Portnoy was there, they both supervised the mixes and obviously Portnoy had a very great weight in that area.
These guys are from outer space lol I still miss Portnoy, but what can we do, it was his choice and the other members picked Mangini as the new drummer and life goes on... Portnoy still maintains a close friendship to the other members of the Band...
