Okey, just listen folks. What are you all complaining about really? First of all, remember that they're not like 20 years old anymore. Their age is spread from John Petrucci that is 46 (almost 47), to Jordan Rudess that is 57 years old. It's not bad at all that they keep playing at this level. You can't really complain about James LaBrie's voice either. He's 51 years old, and sings really amazing here. Remember that he struggled a LONG TIME with his voice after the food poisoning in '94. And what you really should think about, is that they have played together in this band for ALMOST 30 YEARS now. It's Mike Portnoy's own fault that he's not playing in the band anymore. Mike Manghini is doing a GREAT job here. Remember that his first album was meant for him to be like a "warm up" for him, so he could get to know the band better, to get the feeling of how it is to play with the band and to tour with them. John Petrucci wrote the drumnotes for his first album, and Mangini's job was to record what was written on these notes (with a certain level of improvisation). This album on the other hand, is more serious. Now he's a fulltime bandmember. But you should all keep in mind that he's their newest member, and that it's the first album he's deciding everything himself. Give him some more time to play with the band, because I'm certain that it's from now that you will know the reason why he became the new drummer. It's from now on that he finds himself upon all this and finds his way to go in the band. He's a REALLY good drummer, that is playing different from all other drummers. He has a certain way to do things that no one else have. And a last thing. Remember that the band have gone through A LOT of changes since Mike Portnoy left the band. Portnoy was in a way the foundation of the band, and when he left, they had to reorganize the whole band. They need to try out new things, and find out what they like - and of course what you, the audience, like. It's not easy for them to keep the balance right between them and the audience. Instead of just complain about what you don't like, show your support to them. Of course you can tell them what you don't like, but also tell them what you DO like. Then it's way easier for them to find out what direction they want to go further, and they get to know their fans better too.

+sleepwalker2112 I think that would be slightly overpowering, given that the bands a 5-piece and rush 3 where there is more room in the mix for a big bass tone. Not to mention dream theater plays a lot more bussy and heavy stuff. There was a time where he was actually audible and had awesome tone though, like scenes in new york. He should definitely be louder however.
Burak Mete My theory is that Portnoy is primarily responsible for the way the band sounds since the turn of the century (I mean that heavy metal stuff that the band adopted from the Train of Thought). And since LaBrie´s poisoning his voice was no longer to sing metal as he did in Awake for example. That is LaBrie forced to sing in a way that harmed his voice even more. What the hell is bad about Labrie? I freaking love the dudes voice it fits so well with the band. And at least he never lip syncs like other singers mostly do.
There are times where you can hear this is clearly post-processed, but this performance is an amazing one for him. Normally he has massive problems annunciating and actually hitting the notes in general.
@@Cobalt985 I hear tons of human pitch errors in this. Especially in the "As a child, I thought I could live without pain..." verse. He's really reaching for that high D note there and you can hear it. I don't think the vocals are post-processed or overdubbed. I've seen them live and his vocals were about on par with what they are here. It's also possible, of course, that he tried to sing a bit better for this performance because he knew it would be taped.
Eer0 CR eh, a great live performance would be both similar and different to the studio version, a perfect replica of the studio version would be boring
This version sounds too good for being live. It must be heavily overdubbed. Especially Labrie because his voice sucks. Too weak and thin sounding. He should man up a little or a lot. Sing like a man.
There is a Rush live dvd I have (working men) and they literally don't keep one shot up for more than a second (I think on the YYZ performance). Good music, but dizzying.
Hay que darle crédito a quien creó las bases rítmicas. Videos de pibes que tocan este tema igual que Portnoy hay miles, pero el loco fue quien las pensó. Igual Mangini es una bestia
No one going to comment on how fucking tasty Jordan's interpretation of the original solo was? I really admire his talent in taking things other keyboadists have written and making them his own. Unique.
Listen everyone, if the drum-kit here on this live had the same sound production than the one Portnoy had on all the DT live he has been doing (Portnoy always had a look over the sound of his drumkit when they were making a Live tape/dvd) , no one would be saying "this drummer is dead/flat etc ...", compare this video with an older live with portnoy, you will notice the snare and kick are always compressed, the snare drum is always tighten at max, and the drums are always louder than anything else !
Nowaday to clarify things, the only one who has an eye upon the whole mixing process is John Petrucci ! so Guitars : LOUDER everything else : quieter, that's why the drums are so dead here, cause everything was turned down, you can't even hear the damn kick drum, the sound has no depth, no resonnance, there is almost no EQ on the snare drum, all the toms are flat, due to the mixing, and the drum kit has nothing to do with that, i heard a Pearl reference before and these kits are freaking loud, tight with a lot of resonnance !
Mangini always used to play really tight heads. Sometimes we can tighten them too much which can choke out the sound. I not sure, but that's what the sound reminds me of. I'm not hearing the initial strike of the stick hitting the head. Everything after this was better, possibly due to using a two ply head rather than the single layer he uses here. The two ply Remo Emperor helps articulation. I was expecting Mike to play Remo Pinstripes because all his pics around the entry to the band showed pins on the kit. I thought that he may have recorded with the pins on ADOTE, but have no way of knowing.
I love being able to hear the guitar, keys, and bass with Mangini. They were hard to hear with Portnoy blasting his rlkkrlkkrlkk over the them. It's a lot more difficult to do what Mangini is doing with the material, playing precisely with the runs, and supporting the music, rather than riffing over it - which for drummers is a lot of fun to do, but boring for people to have to endure most times.
Troppo bravi! Eccezionale poi il finale che modifica il pezzo dalla originale versione, improvvisandosi in qualcosa di davvero molto carino per intrattenere il vastissimo pubblico del Luna Park. Concerto certamente spettacolare, di cui ho il BluRay a casa.
I really love Portnoy on the drums and it's been hard for me to get used to Mangini, but he sounds really good here. I still think he doesn't have nearly as much feel as Portnoy as of now (probably due to how new he is compared to how long they were playing with Portnoy) but I think that's definitely changing. I think his drumming sounded pretty good on DOT and I hope it gets better.

Jordan is a freak! I saw him at Summer NAMM16. He was insanely good
WHAT THE ***** that was the best version of Metropolis pt 1 ive seen, i that jam session towards the end, AND THAT ENDING THO, OMG that was amazing
between 9:00 and 10:20 was awesome!
Agree, wish they had that energy in the entire song.
I love the Look Labrie gives Mike @ the end like: "God this drummer is so good".
rudess' wizard hat
I love how Jordan is just having fun playing like a child with a wizard hat
Pasan los años y siguen siendo los mejores. En estudio y también en vivo.
What amuse me ..that they are so freakin happy playing ...which makes me wanna live this experience even for one time :) i love DT
I am curious about this topic ... is Petrucci that selfish?
Mangini always used to play really tight heads. Sometimes we can tighten them too much which can choke out the sound. I not sure, but that's what the sound reminds me of.
I'm not hearing the initial strike of the stick hitting the head.
Everything after this was better, possibly due to using a two ply head rather than the single layer he uses here. The two ply Remo Emperor helps articulation.
I was expecting Mike to play Remo Pinstripes because all his pics around the entry to the band showed pins on the kit. I thought that he may have recorded with the pins on ADOTE, but have no way of knowing.
This band is sensational, the instrumental part is perfect, they explore all the instruments in a magnificent way!
mike mangini also amazing. a teacher, a master and professor in drum. why not?
+Adnan Amirwan im a big fan of MP.But without him..DT still need to move on and MM is doing just fine with them.
petrucci just keeps getting better. most guitarist are in their prime in their 30s.... hes still just as good, and omg his tone was fantastic
Wow! Mangini just puts so much precision, articulation, and clarity to Portnoy's parts!
Yes, such a consistent tempo kept by Mangini!!
He is an amazing drummer but not excitement when he plays. Bring back portnoy
@@jeremykelly1169 lol
@@jeremykelly1169 no.
i love pale blue dot.
Gw paling suka versi ini... Mike Mangini,,jago...
Dream Theater - The Great !
When the band has this much fun, it's a great magic that most performances don't have. And I must add, DT Jazz is amazing.
I don't know what yall are talking about with James' singing. He was spotty on Dark Eternal Night but flawless on all other songs of this DVD IMHO.
their souls connected each other. AWSOME
OMG Mangini is awesome :D
There sound quality is epic....love ❤️❤️
probably the best song i have ever heard
Doesn't get old!
Mr. Mangini so perfect.
For me too. My Father has a problem with him, but not me. Greetings from Poland.
Troppo bravi! Eccezionale poi il finale che modifica il pezzo dalla originale versione, improvvisandosi in qualcosa di davvero molto carino per intrattenere il vastissimo pubblico del Luna Park. Concerto certamente spettacolare, di cui ho il BluRay a casa.
4:28 LaBrie goes to take a leak.
Dream Theater is truly truly an extremely awesome metal band.
Hope they come to Pittsburgh Pa USA when they can.
Why is everyone bitching about LaBrie? He sounded amazing here.
Be honest, he's more of a vocalist than a singer.
That is the dumbest comment I've read all week. Good job.
cursedcrawloftime
Really? I'd have a think about it! :o) So many people speak English, so few are poets.
You're funny!
*****
I can see you're no musician or you'd know what I meant. Celine Dion - Singer, Johnny Rotten - Vocalist, gettit whiteboy?
i love the part starting 8:50 it just keeps me smiling while watching,it's all great awesome music players
dream theater Forever
top class DT,and they will always be,such a versatile and musically clever outfit...
Petrucii ❤
Incredible voice. James LaBrie is singing very well. Awesome.
OMG, isso é uma porrada de composição. Aonde o ser humano foi capaz, ninguém sabe seus limites .
Bought this day one. Only small complaint is the relative lack of John Myung's fingers. Otherwise fabulous.
Dream Theater played with all their heart and high level techniques.
If by that you mean the lack of screen time Myung got, then I agree.
superzombiehack That's exactly what I mean, yes.
2014 still works. ! yes said this to all DT songs... And saying it still to many more ! Thank You DT For all the years of Fucking awesome Tunes !
I really like this live version. Mangini Rule!
Getting Mike was the best decision they ever made!
The best music
james's voice is like fine wine, gets better with age
