The live version of this from Ringside 2003 is absolute fire. Also you will find on my channel a tribute to this song and the man who co-wrote it - Cold Chisel's drummer Steve Prestwich RIP. I did three tributes in total to mark the anniversary of Steve's passing this year. These will teach you a lot about the band. The Flame Trees song tribute shows the evolution of the song from Steve through to Jimmy and other Australian applications of the song. It makes you appreciate how much it has become part of the culture.

I have been watching the Long Play interviews, and this morning started watching one with Mark Optiz who produced Chisel albums East and Circus Animals (both brilliant in my opinion). He was worried that the great songs by Don Walker were not radio friendly..... and he spoke to Steve who told him of his song Forever Now, Flame Trees and When the War is over, and Jimmy's song You've Got Nothing I need, and he knew these where the songs 🎵 that were going to complete the album.....

The song is on the "Twentieth Century" album which came out in 1984. I am a big Cold Chisel fan and I first saw them play in 1975. It is semi-autobiographical, with Don Walker writing about returning to his home town, Grafton in northern New South Wales, after having some success in the "big city".

Flame Trees is a much loved ballad by fans due to its nostalgic feel, and was written in 1984 by the drummer, Steve Prestwich and keyboardist, Don Walker. I don't like saying i have a favourite Cold Chisel song but it is definitely in my top 5. The band members all make guest appearances in the film clip, except Jimmy but he is seen in the live footage on the tv towards the end. I used to have that poster of Jimmy with the bottle of vodka in his hand on my bedroom wall...it was 6 foot high and nearly covered the whole wall. Thanks as always for the reaction Saeed

this song is about and filmed in a town called Grafton in New South Wales, Ian grew up there and the flame trees are still celebrated today, the city streets are lined with jacaranda trees and they hold the jacaranda tree festival every year, aka flame trees, because of the colour at a certain time of year. the pub in vid still operates too and it still feels very much like a town

I've driven through the old suburb many times and you think you are going to run into an old friend or love but you don't because they have all moved away as I have. This was released after the band split up… (before reforming 15 years later)
This is regarded as the song in which the band says goodbye..
There’s a double meaning to the lyrics, ‘she’ is obviously about a love lost, but also the band itself..
    The band won’t be around..

Khe San was a monumental US action in Vietnam.
The Aussies had nothing to do with Khe San, we had our own battles and actions......but Khe San was chosen for the song because it flowed better than Long Tan or any of the other Aussie actions.
