    At the risk of sounding like a ridiculous teenager (those years which I have left far behind)…

I was losing the light anyway so I put the old deadbolt back in and was going to figure it out today. I'm hoping this adjustment is all I need. Thank you for doing such a great job of demonstrating these lataches. I have a model AYRDB-DRIVE latch that comes with a "Nest x Yale" smart lock, the kind sold by Google. Unfortunately I extended the latch to 2 3/4 inches from the default of 2 3/8 inches. Do you know how I can return the latch to the 2 3/8 inches setting?

      @@LockandKilo Thank you so much. It turns out that Yale/Assa Abloy posted a pretty old video showing how to retract an apparently older version of this latch to 2 3/8 inches. Their method in the video did not work for me. A commenter suggested using a screwdriver to lift up a narrow black strip, then press a button that is on the bottom and at the same time push the end of the latch inwards. I fumbled a bit but on the second or third try, I got it right and the latch retracted back to 2 3/8. This is for an AYRDB-DRIVE latch version which is sold with Nest x Yale locks that were shipped to buyers in late 2023. I feel relieved. I have learned my lesson and will carefully measure the backset in the future.

      Unfortunately, Kwikset is the one brand that is very unique to its own locks. The tail pieces on the knob and deadbolt are very specific.

      I have come across Teeho locks that customers have purchased themselves, specifically the Smart style keypad dead-bolts, the latch has adjusted similar to the last one on this video.
      Try and firmly hold the end of the latch and twist only the face plate and see if it comes loose. The Teeho's out of the box can be very tight at first, also try to twist both ways to break it loose!
      If the latch shows the measurements on the side it'll be adjustable.

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not quite sure if I know exactly what you mean, but I can try and help!
      If you mean that when you close the door and the latch doesn't connect with the strike plate, it could be that the latch/strike is recessed too far or a hinge issue to start with.
      If you mean the latch itself sticks out too far from the door itself, then the door may need to be recessed further in.
      Usually a gap would be a trim issue, hinge issue, or the strike/latch needs to be chiseled out some!

    I just got a lock to replace an indoor one that has no lock. although it's a 2.3/8 it's still too 'long'. It looks like when they drilled the hole initially they drilled it a bit smaller. I mean another 1/2 inch and it would be good. Do I need to drill it larger or just over a 1/2 inch??

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was initially drilled incorrectly, you may want to consider having a carpenter help you out as some doors are easy to damage when trying to "correct" this way.
      Sometimes people will bore the hole bigger and use a scar plate behind the knob, but this is all dependent on what type of door and where the door is located.
      Having one random scar plate will look off on a home with matching locks vs having a scar plate on a side garage door for example.
      I see a lot of customers who tried to just etch out enough room to make the latch fit, but it can cause splitting on the door and create a bigger issue since when you install the lock, you'll end up with a decent gap which can weaken the door and cause security vulnerabilities.

    • @anniesshenanigans3815
      @anniesshenanigans3815 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LockandKilo the door is particle board, so it was easy to bore out a few hunks so it would fit. THEN I put the lock thing in wrong so the key will lock it, but won't unlock it.. more youtube videos later I figured that issue out.

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Dionne
      You can try and spray lubricant on it and try it again, make sure you twist both ends opposite directions from each other to better make it turn over.
      Also, it doesn't require a lot of force to turn, so if you try and turn it too much it can sort of bind and act "jammed".

    That brass square in the middle of the latching mechanism that the doorknob actually turns, it is too big and my door would not open because the latch would not retract past the strikeplate for the door to open And i got locked in. Why is that? I have changed many doorknobs but this is on a new greenhouse and i did not love getting locked in in the dark. I don’t know why this is happening thank you. There does not seem to be room to put on a normal strike plate and instead the greenhouse came with only a very clean squared off hole in the aluminum frame

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi!
      So, if you are talking about the piece that the knob feeds through inside the latch, if that is too large then it could be the wrong latch for that knob, or it could have worn out.
      If you mean the latch itself is too big for the strike, you could use a dremel to notch the strike area larger.
      Not sure if that helps, but the little square in the latch should fit the knob post perfectly. There shouldn’t be any excess gaps around it.

    Oh great, the deadbolt i have is NONE OF THESE. It has a black spring type thing (on bottom) like the one in the middle on the right BUT does not have that mechanism that you just turn to change the backset. I am so bloody annoyed how to change it because it definitely has 2 openings marked 2 3/8" and 2 3/4". Those 2 openings are right above the black spring. The lock barrel has "Beaver" stamped on it which i believe was probably sold by Beaver Lumber here in Canada and long out of business. Also has "Made in Taiwan" stamped internally and 1992.9 which i assume is year and month it was made. The latch itself has U.S. Patent No. 4839025 stamped on it, so maybe that is an option for me to look---maybe the Patent explains how to change it. GRRRRR! It's brand new that i picked up at Value Village years ago with no instructions. My old, detached garage door never had a deadbolt installed and i wanted to use it there.

    • @KStewart-th4sk
      @KStewart-th4sk หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well with the help of Google and searching with the US Patent number---don't ask me why the US Patent office site failed me, that POS said "item not found"--yet Google showed the US Patent link with the writeup. Used the US site one other time and it worked fine. ANYWAYS, there is a small pin (it has 2 little knobs of different diameters on each side of the latch). Push that pin UPWARD in its slot against spring tension, and you are then able to slide the turning mechanism in or out to whichever backset you need. I had to move it out to the 2 3/4" location.

    I wish the door latch instructions were more clear. My neighbour figured out how to switch between 2 3/8 and 2 3/4 quicker than I could find out how on this video.

    What if it's not 2.75... but like 5 or 6 inches? What then?

      This video consists of the most common styles found in the North American Residential world. However, the 5 inch latch is definitely still sold today!
      The 5 inch latch is normally sold in a “fixed” position, so it cannot be adjusted. One issue that happens with those is when an inexperienced handyman doesn’t properly measure before cutting and cuts slightly off the mark.
      It’s extremely important to be very precise in making the cut in the door accurate for a 5 inch latch due to not being able to adjust it!

    what does the up mean?

    • @LockandKilo
      @LockandKilo  ปีที่แล้ว

      "Up" lets you know which way the latch is supposed to be oriented.
      If the word "Up" is upside down, the install is incorrect.
