    I'm kinda surprised by how many negative "11 minute video for a two minute fix" comments there are! He showed a few different solutions and is teaching how to do each of them at no cost to you. This was a clear and informative video! Thank you for creating this type of content!
    I'll be trying these tips on an old shed at our church. We replaced the door handle today, but it doesn't latch, and we think it is because the door has warped over time.

    Bought a carbide burr drill bit and shaved off a few millimeters off of my strike plate and it did the trick. Thanks for the tip! I Personal tip, I taped my vacuum hose directly under the strike plate while drilling to suck all of the metal shaving directly into the vacuum. Mess free!

    SEL, Great vid! 30-year high-end finish carpenter here. I'd like to point out you said safety "glasses" but showed goggles. I know it sounds minor but people should definitely use full wrap goggles like those you showed while using Tungsten Carbide burrs on metal. The tiny filings the burr removes are micro-scalpel sharp and are so fine they fly around quite a bit. Regular safety glasses allow these minuscule razors to float right into your eyes past regular lenses/frames/side shields. Also DO NOT perform this or clean up with bare hands. Wear Nitrile (not fabric) gloves! The shards will easily embed in your skin much like fiberglass. The irritation is the same. Believe me I learned the hard way, they will even embed through the toughest calluses on a tradesman's hands

    I wish more locksmiths would do this. I call it "total door evaluation". I first check the hing screws like you did, paying attention to the top hinge. I use longer screws too to draw it up. Many times this is the only fix needed, plus lube the locks as a general practice. I never work on a lock without lubing it. Your customers love how the door works when you do this.

      I’ve been to countless jobs that the doors not closing correctly, and all the needed to be done was tighten or replace the screws. Or throw a “hinge doctor” on to the hinge and that fix’s the problem 95% of the time I use it almost everyday great tool!

      @@detox_1581 what’s a “hinge doctor”?

  • @bobbycrider199
    @bobbycrider199 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The longer screws are a good idea, but if the strike is not hitting the strike plate correctly, check your reveal around your door. Also, check the reveal across the top of the door. You can put shims behind the hinges and move the door in any direction. If the reveal on both sides and across the top is even, the strike will hit the strike plate correctly. The door jamb might have settled and may need to be wedged up. Don't move or grind on the strike plate. It is possible that the door or jamb was hung incorrectly. Sorry about complaining, but what you are describing is not your department. Sounds like the job for a carpenter. Sorry again, contact me if I can help.

    I was worried about the suggestion to permanently modifying the strike plate but he did go over the main issues to address for the cause of misalignment which imo is the real fix. Occasionally a doorway has so much settling or warpage that modifying the plate may be necessary but there are also strike plates that are oversize that will allow you to totally reposition the plate and still look factory made as it will cover the original mortising. Thanks for sharing.

    Personally, I prefer to use the carbide bit in a Dremel (or similar). A full sized drill with a carbide cutter can be a bit brutal especially if you're not very careful. Better to take longer and get the result you want!

    • @S.E.Locksmith
      @S.E.Locksmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a dremel can work as well but I use a power drill as I do it for many years now.
      Safety is the most important and even with dremel you’ll have to be careful etc

      @@S.E.Locksmith I was actually thinking that when using a large drill you can easily remove more than you intend so a more "gentle" tool could be better especially in inexperienced hands. But yes, wear PPE whatever you choose to use!

    This is an idea for an interior door but I don't know I want to do this on an exterior door as the metal would be compromised. I would recommend a security strike plate for one thing. It doesn't matter how long the screws of if they stay in place and that strike plate gives away because the metal was shaved down too thin.

    As a Locksmith myself, I find this appalling. You repair the hinges, in wood you could move the strike if necessary. Filing a strike will give a door more room to sag, if filed the auxiliary latch will fill into the strike decreasing security or causing the latch to bind. You can leave too much play again decreasing security. I am a locksmith for 37 years and I teach the trade in classroom setting as well as apprentices actively in the field and tell them all to address the actual problem and not be lazy using quick ameture fixes that will only increase problems in the future.

    Ok, that is kinda easy and I've done that many times. What if the latch lines up with the plate but the door still don't latch? You have to push the door real hard to get it to latch or the door may not latch at all. what then?
