I just got into Flippin & Pitchin and a really good Bass Fisherman I met at church told me about the “ FG “ knot and the Palomar Knot. He asked me to look it up on TH-cam to learn how to do it and “Here you Are”. I have never in my life made Flurocarbon to Braid leaders before but I am going to from now on. Tomorrow I buy the 50 or 60 pound test Flurocarbon line. You made it look so simple. I’m going to save your video just in case someone else needs to learn. Thank You for the video..
i need to thank you!! i'm a old school fisherman... and i'm trying to catch this new features as braided... and the FG was a real pain on my back. thanks to you now it's done :)
Exactly what I was looking for!! I just stuck with the double uni after watching how complicated the FG knot seemed to me (and after failing miserably) Thanks!!
Congratulations excellent tutorial. I really think this method is the effortless and fast way to do the FG knot. After the two half hitches I pull the knot super tight and i see it tuning then stop, then finishing with a rizzuto and burn both tags. Work perfect.
Excellent video and I may try this. But I gotta say, I've used a double or triple surgeons knot to join braid and leader for years and never had one fail yet. The surgeons knot is super fast and easy to tie - takes maybe a minute. :-)
I have just completed my first FG knot following your instructions. It is all too solid and confiable. And so beautiful, too!. Smart and easy method. Thank you very much.
Best FG knot video I have found by far. Just tied one up and put a big wake bait on the end of my leader. Off to catch a big Murray Cod 🤞. Thanks for the video.
Good video JC, I’ve seen this method before but still personally tie with tension as it’s just something I’m used to and can knock out quickly. The main things are making sure you pull it super tight to start to change color. The multiple half hitches work well, I used to do that for a few years but started finishing with a rizutto a year or so ago just because it pulls against the FG. Also I find the biggest help is I keep a cigar torch style lighter in my gear bag. I always cut the tag just a hair long and then burn it so it mushrooms just a touch. It keeps anything from sliding over the tag of your leader. Keep your lines tight and maybe I’ll see you out here locally
I couldn't get my head round the fg knot until I seen your video showing the simplest version yet.. the key for me being the limp line technique.. thank you

Hey, here's a tip : when you have mono line or flouro that is curling and you want to straighten it out - fold the tip of your leather belt and run it through there with some pressure. You'll end up with perfectly straight line
Very nice video. Now i learned how to tie the FG knot the easy way. I used to tie mine uni to uni but most of the time but it gets hang up on my guide. I have to practice and learn this. Thanks for your time and don't mind all about the negative comments from some people.
I'm glad the video helped. I use the uni to uni when the fish are biting really good and I have to retie in a hurry. Otherwise I always use the FG. Thanks for commenting.
I've been using this knot for two years or so now and is the only knot I use for the braid / fluoro connection. I use three cinch knots to secure both lines, snip the fluoro and tie six cinch knots on the braid only. Maybe a bit overdone, but have never had one fray or break. To me, the extra cinch knots make smoother knot transition to your line.
This is spectacular. Major kudos to you for taking the time to show this. Although, in the spirit of fisherman humor, I can't end my comment without recognizing that out of the 12min you shot this, it took 9min of it for you to actually get to tying the knot! 🤣. #1 failure with the FG is not gloving up and tightening your FG after the First half hitch of 2. The braid should change color by digging into the leader! That is why your FG most likely had failure!
I just tried 4 times and all 4 attempts failed. So much for the expensive H.D. Fluorocarbon and 65 pound test braided line. This is probably not even necessary for fishing in the lily pads. All my life I used 6” steel leaders and caught bass and pike with no problem. I guess I need to listen to people who are not being SPONSORED and get their products for FREE…

Now, I'm a master at tying this knot and had a chance to test it on a recent trip. I got caught in structure about 30m down. 30lb mono leader broke before the knot and this was with the mate constantly snapping the line trying to get it loose! Thanks again as this knot will be used from now on.
I've been tying this knot for a couple years now definitely gonna check this way out soon... I'd love to think it's this easy but I've had my leader pull through even with good tension on both lines while tying it and I feel like this way would have a much higher likelihood of not cinching properly especially with smaller line. Cool video man!!!
I’d always steered away from the FG and used the Alberto knot until this video. I had doubts but got it the first time. Thank you. Now I I’m gonna use it
Awesome, I cut the tag ends much shorter now. The key is to really lock down on those first two half hitches. I've also been adding a drop of super glue for extra assurance. There are a lot of videos showing different methods of finalizing the tying off. Thanks for watching.
I have to say that for whatever reason, every other tutorial on the FG knot has confused me at some point. But this method here clicked with my brain. Thank you!!

Having tension on the main line creates a better, tighter knot. There is nothing wrong with taking a bit more time to get this knot right. It's not like you have to tie this knot several times a fishing trip. You took about six minutes to tie it by the way. If you fish with a bait casting reel with smaller eyes you'll truly appreciate having the tension on the line. You will also appreciate cutting the tag ends much closer and adding a dab of super glue, wetting your fingers and smoothing the super glue back towards your fishing poole. That allows the leader to pass through the eyes much smoother for better casting and reeling.
@@andrewmorke same, I fish from a kayak offshore. This method is very doable on a kayak. Agree you don't tie them often however when you have to this method is awesome!,
Great Video Thank you! I got it on the first try. I wish I learned this knot 10 years ago 😆. I've been using the Improved Albright inshore and the uni to uni for Tuna and other large species. Can't wait to try the FG on my next trip.
man i have watched so many videos to try to get ths knot right and faild so many times, i busted out my 20 pound braidn and 50 poind leader and did it 1st go with this video. Thanks for the help and great explanation/video.
Its the best knot when you are sitting around. This knot isn't feasible in the dark with a pitching boat with 30lb stripers blowing up around your boat. Ill take the Crazy Alberto all day.
Oh my gosh Drew that kind of fishing action sounds like a dream come true. I'd love to be hooking up with fish like that and not having much time to retie. Thanks for sharing.
Crazy Alberto works fine if your tying 15 lb. mono to 30 lb braid but if you tying on a 100 lb fluoro leader to 50 lb braid for Muskies it doesn't cut it. If your leader is a much larger diameter then your braid, the FG knot is the ONLY way to go. Plus the way I tie it is fairly ez to do, even in the boat. Check out my channel for my method on how to tie it.
Hands down my favorite leader knot. After I tied my first one and tested it I cut all of my leaders and switched them to FG's. Stop losing leaders folks. It's way easier than people make it seem. I do it while pedaling a kayak and I've got ADHD! I don't even own shoes because I don't like tying the laces and this knot seems easy.
Very good video. Never tied my FG like this. I may have to learn it this way. Normally I’ll bite on the braid to create tension. 4 minutes to tie an FG is crazy. I normally tie an FG in about 60 seconds start to finish. Practice makes perfect when it comes to knot tying.
Thank you for your Video, after my 4th try I got it , and it seems to be holding strong , I picked up the Quantum S3 Smole Reel, and I am using braid with the Fluro leader , I am going to try it for the first time tomorrow , will let you know how it holds up.... did some testing in the pool with a 1/2 oz weight , and it was hold strong .... :)
You are right in the fact you can tie it this way, but you end up with a inferior knot. Tying with both lines tight is by far the better and stronger method.
@@RadReelingFishing , you are delusional if you think this is the best way to tie an FG knot. I invented the Fish-N-Fool knot, the strongest line to lure knot ever created for mono or braided line. So I know a thing or two about how to tie a good knot. Speed should never be you #1 goal in tying a good knot, strength should always be. But I can tie this knot my way in just about a minute and it took you almost 4 minutes, so I will go with the proper way to tie it.
I'm new to looking at the FG knot. Am I wrong that it's purely a friction knot? There is no Bight or anything locking the knot? Just 10x10 wraps and 2x2 half hitches?
Holy cow Rad, I love your channel and I have watched a ton of your videos but making us wait 5 freaking minutes before you show us how to tie the FG Knot? Come on man! And I understand you have a hard time looking for a better way to tie the knot but you don’t have to say it over and over again for 4 minutes to make us understand your point! Would you please get to the point of your video quicker next time! Terrific video and thanks for posting it btw!

@Sha'an Zakan Chamois leather ? is made from the skin of a European mountain goat called the Chamois, the genuine article is very expensive. Most of the Chamois (chammy)leather sold today is made from Sheep skin.
I watched a bunch of videos and practiced 4 different FG methods. This was by far the best way to tie it; easiest and strongest. I fished it all summer and never had a knot fail.
This video is gold!!! Thanks man! The FG knot is the best knot to combine two lines without doubt! BUT! The same issue with having the line straight is terribly annoying! This version is very very helpful for me at least !!! Thanks a lot for that man!!!!
God people and their impatients calm down people let him do his video, if you don't like it watch someone else. I like this method but also like the tension on the line method as well.
I have been a fan of the Fine Grip Knot or also known as the FG knot since I was introduced to it. It is the strongest knot and the thinnest knot that will go through the guides the easiest. I caught some decent size snook on a 15 and 20 pound leader and the knot held up just fine. This video makes it A LOT easier to tie it. 4 minutes was about how long it took me to tie one that was good. I could do a half way ok knot in 2 min. BUT this video allowed me to tie the FG in about 1 min. Thank you. :)
alberto knot is better for lines under 20lb and the fg is superior because of size in heavy lines. it's all about knowing the correct knot for the situation.
Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I've really changed the way I finish off the knot since making this video, but the main weaving of the knot is really easy this way. Thanks for watching.
I agree with CSKN try and do this knot with 4lb nanofil crystal and 4 lb floro its a nightmare. Which then leaves you going with the Alberto which I have found that on the last step of the Alberto if you dont send the leaded line though the last loop a couple extra times the Alberto on its own can fail. The extra step works great. Also as I do a lot of night fishing with flash lights this knot is not an option where as the Alberto with a twist is achievable.
You are a knotty person... This is very much similar to a feather tying, for flyfishing. Only difference is that the thread wrap is doubled and goes in reverse on the hook, in this your monofilament line. THANKS FOR SHARING.
Nice and easy way of tying the FG. To make the transition between braid and leader even better - after trimming the tag end of the leader tye some more half hitches (2-6). Then the tag end won’t compromise the knot when reeling in. Tight lines! 💪🏼
I've been trying to tie a FG kmot for 2 years. It took a couple of trys but it came out nice. Now the trick will be to do it on a rocking boat in the wind. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks for the video. I've been trying to master this knot for awhile now with dismal success & now after watching your video I feel very confident in my FG knot!!
I do “knot”see that going through your guides that well... I get you rushed and did it sloppy but that is not gonna do well. But thanks for the video and tips.
Seeing this 5 years after publicaton, and yes- you don't need tension on the line when starting out with the FG. The only tension you need comes in at the end, when you want the braid to bite into the Monofilament/Fluorocarbon. I personally use the finger-triangle method, which is quick- I tie it in just under a minute. Reason why I stick to it, is that it is a consistent method and my hands have gotten used to tiying it- I can tie it half-asleep. It became muscle-memory after those first few tries with it- some years ago. It also provides me with a consistent strength. One knot does not widely differ in strength from another- they're all in the same ballpark. Basically- because of this method, my hands are like a machine in a factory, chucking out FG knots at a consistent rate and time-frame, with a consistent quality- all in a consistent flow that does not deviate. It really is refreshing to see someone who tensions that line at the end in the same way I do- you need a few quick pulls- 3 in my case, just to give it that initial bite that will stop it from slipping over the fluoro/Nylon (a result of the lack of tension at the start)... then you pull slowly and let it sink in- changing color to indicate that it has a d3athgrip on the Nylon. Depedning on what you prefer as your finish- you can either do half-hitches, or a Rizutto. It can be argued that a Rizutto is better, but from my tests, they're mostly the same with the Rizutto being marginally better- so I only finish with a Rizutto on heavy tackle where it matters. Voila! There is not a knot this side of heaven that will beat that. (Well.. the PR knot is just tooooo tedious and wayyy to impractical. It's nothing other than a show-off knot for exhibitions and fishing shows)
There is no "holy cow" moment about this video. This is the basic way of tying an FG knot that is on a bizzillion videos, 1 of 4 different ways to tie it. Sorry Rad!
You are welcome. I am glad the knot worked for you. Those area really light lines. I think the hard part with smaller pound test braid is the cinching down of the knot.
Thanks you for the comment. Yeah, I agree with you...I kind of noticed that after I'd published the video. That's the beauty of TH-cam, you can skip over the yakking.
I do tournament kayak fishing and primarily use fitness set ups and this is the only knot I use from braid to floro leader. Has never fail me yet. It might take a few times to get it right but its well worth the effort
I like using the Albright and reverse Albright knot from the power pro booklet there is two versions and it's low profile and pretty easy to learn and seems very strong it's my new knot I learned and fun to tie and looks really good.
Excellent comment. I'm learning to tie the FG the night before I go fishing and usually if I have to retie while fishing I use the uni to uni knot because it's so much faster.
@@RadReelingFishing I like the uni to uni too it's easier to tie while your out fishing I also use the surgeons knot looped four times instead of just two real easy to do on the go I' m not sure if it goes through the guides as well though

@@andrewmorke same, I fish from a kayak offshore. This method is very doable on a kayak. Agree you don't tie them often however when you have to this method is awesome!,
Uhhhh. 6 min because he showing/explaining capt. Obvious
Great Video Thank you! I got it on the first try. I wish I learned this knot 10 years ago 😆. I've been using the Improved Albright inshore and the uni to uni for Tuna and other large species. Can't wait to try the FG on my next trip.
I DID IT!!!!! JUS NOW.....THANKS from IDAHO!
Thank you so much for this video, clear instructions and audio quality, and good camera angle.im now using fg knots, thank you from the uk
Awesome technique mate I will use that. By the way, if you have never been cut by braid, then you're not fishing light enough.
😂😂
man i have watched so many videos to try to get ths knot right and faild so many times, i busted out my 20 pound braidn and 50 poind leader and did it 1st go with this video.
The Albright is easier than either the FG or CA
@@davidlevy9430 but the knot size is crazy huge, which is technically slightly more than twice the leader diameter
@@jontkk the FG and CA are two to three times larger than the Albright
Hands down my favorite leader knot. After I tied my first one and tested it I cut all of my leaders and switched them to FG's. Stop losing leaders folks. It's way easier than people make it seem. I do it while pedaling a kayak and I've got ADHD! I don't even own shoes because I don't like tying the laces and this knot seems easy.
love this knot but i can tell you if you've "never been cut by braid" youre either not fishing enough or not trying hard enough LOL
Been using braid for years trying by hand and have never cut my hand trying knots.🙄
It's not tying knots with braid that it cuts you. It's when it slips when you're boat flipping a fish or wrap it around your hand when you're hung up
If you're smart you won't cut yourself.
I have only cut myself with 6 pound braid because its so thin it Just cut in my flesh like a knife in butter.
If you're casting heavy sinker s with braid, please tape your index finger. You can get a serious cut. I speak from personal experience.
Finally a tutorial on the FG knot that I managed to follow and successfully tie. Thanks .
Very good video. Never tied my FG like this. I may have to learn it this way. Normally I’ll bite on the braid to create tension. 4 minutes to tie an FG is crazy. I normally tie an FG in about 60 seconds start to finish. Practice makes perfect when it comes to knot tying.
Thanks for commenting. I'm going to use this knot a lot more now that I"ve found a fast and easy method for tying it.
He said he’s only tied 20.
Thanks for the video. The action music used while tieing the knot was a perfect mix! Made me laugh. Your videos are great keep em up!
Thanks William, adding music can be tricky sometimes. It was just enough in those parts to give the feel of victory.
Finally, a video on the FG that is sensible. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing some encouraging words.
This was the first way I learned how to tie fg over 12 years ago.
There's not an easier way.
You are right in the fact you can tie it this way, but you end up with a inferior knot. Tying with both lines tight is by far the better and stronger method.
Bwaa, ha , ha...no it's not. It's not stronger and it's bit better. This method is so much faster and just as strong.
@@FishNFoolLures Thanks for commenting. Here's my proof: th-cam.com/video/q32CDWtVai8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for sharing. Definitely a fast and easy way.
I'm new to looking at the FG knot. Am I wrong that it's purely a friction knot? There is no Bight or anything locking the knot? Just 10x10 wraps and 2x2 half hitches?
Right, it's important to lock those coils down tight. I've started adding a dab of super glue too.
Thanks for watching. Actually, there was some very interesting information in that preceding few minutes. Thanks for watching.
@@RadReelingFishing think he was having you on, but I thought the same thing about just getting on with it lol. Thanks man I’ve been searching the last few days for the perfect vid and I think I found it 👍
This is a very easy way to tie the FG!....Well done and thanks for the video.
Love the FG knot. Try tying that in the wind.
Ha ha...that's a good observation Jason. Yeah, I'm going to use this knot more often now.
oh, I have.. fishing Sebastian Inlet at night during a windy day is a pain.
Thanks mate. Tried all the other ways but this one was gold.
You are welcome. It's definitely an easier method.
You can straighten out mono by pulling it through a chammy leather.
Thanks for the tip. You are the second person who's mentioned that.
Works like a charm for fluorcarbon aswell..
@Sha'an Zakan Chamois leather ?
is made from the skin of a European mountain goat called the Chamois, the genuine article is very expensive.
Most of the Chamois (chammy)leather sold today is made from Sheep skin.
I watched a bunch of videos and practiced 4 different FG methods. This was by far the best way to tie it; easiest and strongest. I fished it all summer and never had a knot fail.
Thanks for watching and letting me know of your success!
You made this look easy man haha. Mine not so good lol
Isn't he supposed to alternate the half hitches also?
This video is gold!!! Thanks man! The FG knot is the best knot to combine two lines without doubt! BUT! The same issue with having the line straight is terribly annoying! This version is very very helpful for me at least !!! Thanks a lot for that man!!!!
God people and their impatients calm down people let him do his video, if you don't like it watch someone else. I like this method but also like the tension on the line method as well.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Finally someone to help defend off the haters. I've deleted a lot of comments on this video.
Thank you. :)
I'm convinced this is the knot I'll be using for a lifetime. Thanks for commenting.
Nearly impossible to tie this way with braid 10 lbs or smaller diameter
alberto knot is better for lines under 20lb and the fg is superior because of size in heavy lines. it's all about knowing the correct knot for the situation.
I have been successfully tying (practicing) 5lb braid to 30lb mono about 10 times no problem Thankyou 👍
Your're welcome.
Just want to say thanks. Best knot I have used to date.
Some say half-hitches should be opposing. First goes over, second goes under.
Airborne!
Great video!!! I tie the FG exclusively. Your method is great!!!
Thanks for sharing. Yeah, I've really changed the way I finish off the knot since making this video, but the main weaving of the knot is really easy this way. Thanks for watching.
you nailed that! appreciate the video showing how
Thank you so much for this! I been away from fishing and knots for a while and this is how I was originally taught 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Try doing it on 4lb leader...
CSKN I tie it with 6lb mono and 5lb braid. I can tie a beautiful little knot using this method.
Also as I do a lot of night fishing with flash lights this knot is not an option where as the Alberto with a twist is achievable.
on that light of line the Crazy Alberto is a better choice.
FG knot is the best thing to happen to fishing in the past few years. Complete game changer.
Sure, thanks for the comment. I've been using gloves to lock the knot down really good.
Morningtide Fishing yewww!
Yeah buddy, yewww!
Thanks for the video. I've been trying to master this knot for awhile now with dismal success & now after watching your video I feel very confident in my FG knot!!
You are welcome. I've started cinching it down really tight with a pair of gloves.
Sorry Rad!
Thanks for commenting Ted.
Awesome vid mate...tried it the nxt day surf casting, tied FG frm braid to shockleader and didnt fail all day..cheers 👍
That wasn't a fast FG Knot, the slowest 4 minute knot that took 11 minutes?
I just did it with 8 lb braid to 20 lb mono and it worked great. Thanks so much!!
You are welcome. I am glad the knot worked for you. Those area really light lines. I think the hard part with smaller pound test braid is the cinching down of the knot.
Thanks so much!
But talk too much!!!
Thanks you for the comment. Yeah, I agree with you...I kind of noticed that after I'd published the video. That's the beauty of TH-cam, you can skip over the yakking.
Spot on!!! Just tried this method and worked great. Nice job!
4th different video, 12th time trying this knot, finally able to get 30# braided to actually dig into the 40# mono and lock in, thank you!
I do tournament kayak fishing and primarily use fitness set ups and this is the only knot I use from braid to floro leader. Has never fail me yet. It might take a few times to get it right but its well worth the effort
I love the FG knot for sure. Thanks for commenting.
@@RadReelingFishing I will say the key is to snug it up each turn, otherwise it could bunch up when you pull it tight.
Never seen it done that way. Thanks for sharing. I still prefer the blood knot for braid to fluorocarbon or mono. Never had a failure. Goes through the eyes well and tags are in the middle of the knot. Guess it’s just the fly fisherman in me.
