Update: I wanted to clarify my experience with the GENY Spartan Coupler. I rank if VERY high in terms of its ability to dampen the connection between the truck and the trailer. I also love the construction quality. What I don't like is the lack of adjustability when trying to level your trailer (they have a product that addresses this for horse trailers). I also don't like the pin coupler, which was the only option available when I did my initial review. I am testing the Weighsafe Scale Gooseball for a while and will keep the Bulldog installed until I finish with the product evaluation. I will likely go back to the GENY at some point though. I do prefer the suspension characteristics...
I would rather have suspension system for ride quality vs having a weight measuring device that you will glance at for 2 seconds. Not to mention your load would have to be very heavy for weight to even be a concern.
I guess this is why they also have the PEGASUS hitch as well. For most goosenecks the spartan is probably ideal but it’s nice they have the low profile option
As a 6'1" 215lb 25 year old who is lying here with two herniated discs thanks to "just muscling it" with basically everything I do...you did it the smart way!
Thanks for your video. I will be looking into this hitch. My standard factory hitch is not long enough to keep my gooseneck dump trailer level, it has an extra 6” built into the risers. I’m 5’8 so I don’t have to worry about bumping my head. Love that aspect. However the hitch is just one hole short of being long enough. The shock absorbers will also be a great addition. Thanks again.
To each their own, but I think I would rather have the suspension aspects of the Gen-Y and a trip to the CAT scales. That being said, everyone has their own opinions and that's why the trailer/towing aftermarket is BOOMING.
This video and videos like this, are Very informative and a good learning experience. Unless, I guess, if someone thinks they know Everything already. I don't think that way. Not at all. Plus New things are coming out too, so Listening and Learning is a good thing to me. Good job, thanks.
My classes (I'm an ag teacher) built a 32' GN cattle trailer that should have been shown last year at the Houston Livestock Show but thanks to Covid we didn't get to, it will have a Gen-Y hitch on it for the show this year and I'm anxious to pull it with that hitch but I am not looking forward to having to get in the back of the truck to put the pin in or take it out. Maybe I'll just have student do it.
An idea for you to swap couplers. Hitch it to the ball in the bed and undo the mounting hardware. Bring some blocks with you and put them under the landing gear. This will give you more height to raise the gooseneck. This way you can keep that weight off the tail gate and keep it over the bed. I hear you on lifting heavy objects. I'd rather use tools to do the heavy lifting than use my back.
I was going to ask about the Ft Knox lock you called out at the end. I've been looking for a hitch lock for my TT but haven't found one that I trust yet. Thanks very much.
Would you give me the information on the jumper that you put on the dead battery? Wanting something that I won’t have to wait to charge to raise and lower the trailer.
Getting old is no fun at all....throwing your back out is no joke....first time it happened to me was when I was 35.....trying to humble myself by shoveling 8 yards of 1 1/4 minus when the tractor was broke down....
Do you still have this gooseneck gen y hitch that you’d like to get rid of? I need something like this for my gooseneck trailer to help the ride, especially when empty on these rough roads. Let me know, -Mike P. . .
does it not matter that you're using an ovular pinhole on that gen-y hitch? doesn't the hitch pivot inside the coupler a bit because of the extra space in that pinhole?
Not sure if it would have worked but you could have tried this to lift that hitch. I would have dropped the landing gear as low as possible. Then hooked the safety chains to it. The used the landing gear to lift it. Hopefully it would go high enough to get in the bed. Just an idea I had.
I definitely would have kept the Spartan hitch on because it performs better than the ball set up that you're putting on your truck that's going to be a rough ride
Would it not be possible to hitch up with the weigh safe (if you suspect you are too heavy), get your reading, then raise up and go back on to the standard goose ball? Just seems to me that the GenY has way more value to the tow than the weigh scale.
It wouldn't have been practical since I want to know the weight as I load equipment on. After remeasuring, the front of the trailer would be pitched up 7.5" when unloaded and 5.5" when loaded. That would mean towing a trailer with a crazy angle to a site, loading it up (at an extreme angle) taking a reading, decoupling, changing the ball, and recoupling. Plus the reading would likely be off pretty bad considering the extreme angle and balance change after going to the lower ball.
@@BTBRVReviews did you not consider the Curt Better Weigh? It simply plugs into your OBD port and links to your phone. I use it all the time for my fifth wheel and conventional trailers. I compared it to the CAT scales and found it has always been very close in comparison.
As a user of a Gen. Y executive hitch I would rather have that than the way safe ball any day. Don't you have to get in the bed to hook the chains up? So what's the big deal with the pin. The gen-y also has a gauge on it as well. I have to give you a thumbs down on this one.
I agree the GENY coupler is better than the Bulldog in terms of function. I will likely go back to it after a longer term evaluation of the Weigh Safe Gooseball, which I am testing for accuracy long term and will be the hitch ball I tow our new Fifth wheel with when it arrives

Same...I rather weigh the entire rig and know all my weights than just tongue weight.

Unfortunately many areas in Texas did not have the infrastructure to handle the weather change. Good on you for delivering water.

I recommend NeverSeez for that sleeve and all trailer slip fits.
It's like Frank's red hot, input that sh>t on everything.
Love the thought on the quick release cable but you still need to jump into the bed to disconnect the safety chains.
I love my weigh-safe hitch. I especially like all of the matching locks. I use them on all of my vehicles and one key.
Those locks are just to keep honest people honest! 😀
Yep. Sometimes an honest man needs help. What ever works.
Need a Gen Y fifth wheel pin review.
To each their own, but I think I would rather have the suspension aspects of the Gen-Y and a trip to the CAT scales. That being said, everyone has their own opinions and that's why the trailer/towing aftermarket is BOOMING.
I actually remeasured everything. It would have sat 7.5" higher in the front with the GENY unloaded and 5.5" higher loaded. Way too much tilt.

JD you need to use the safety chain to lift the hitch
Great idea!
I had the same idea. Use the chains and hoist into the bed. My bad back is always looking for an easier way.
How does the Gen-Y Spartan compare to Shocker Hitch? Can you do a side by side battle of the hitches?
On the next episode of BTBRV, “I bent my tailgate shoving that bulldog hitch in”.
Nope, tailgate is fine
Should have put some blocks under the feet of the trailer, that would have gave you some more height on the tailgate
Didn't have enough blocks on me unfortunately. I just did it the old fashioned way..... the way that requirs Tylenol when Im done. :)
@@BTBRVReviews ow,.my back!!🤣🤣🤣
You should use he saftey chain to lift the other hitch into the truck

Yep. Being stuck in a chair or in bed because of a extremely focused pain isn't fun at all
I would cut 4" off the bottom of the tube on the trailer.

I’d be concerned about putting all that weight on the tail gate to insert the receiver in the gooseneck sleeve.
It was likely only around 100lbs of force
Up to 1600lbs according to the new ball
My weigh safe hitch leaked all the fluid out on the first tow. Structurally it’s fine and tows but no scale
Was it perhaps an earlier model?
@@BTBRVReviews to clarify it’s not a goose ball, it’s a regular receiver hitch. Just now a year old.
Why not cut the tube on the gen- y hitch ?
To remove it? How would that make sense?
Well it doesn’t, I was thinking that the hitch would go higher up , buts it’s the bottom of the hitch that is to large for the ball .
I definitely would have kept the Spartan hitch on because it performs better than the ball set up that you're putting on your truck that's going to be a rough ride
Where do you connect your chains?
I'll have to look into that spartan I haven't seen anything like that looks pretty nifty
It's awesome for sure.
How much for the Gen Y if your done with it?
I also would cut 4" off the bottom of the tube on the trailer.
Those safety chains.. that little pin holding them don't really look like much strength or am I seeing wrong
Why are both your chain tow pucks on the right side of the hitch ? Shouldnt they each be on one side ?
Yes I just keep it there while I have my storage tray in the back of the truck.
On this episode of BTBRV how to ruin a tailgate 101. You got lucky on that one
Naa, I was monitoring it closely.. it didn't take that much pressure to get the tube in...
At 10:00 it looks like you're tight up against your tailgate step. Hope you didn't prang your fixed tailgate.
No it was close but about 2" clear
If it didn’t happen already could you please film your truck towing the water? Also, great video!
I'll try if I make another run this week.

@@shanehayes5421 I have that product. The problem is that my truck has airbags and I have other items using the OBD2 port.

Wanna sell the spartan hitch?
Lowering that weight on that tailgate made me cringe....
Very lucky that it actually slid up in, instead of folding the tailgate in half.
Send me the Gen y and I will put on my 44 gn trailer. Thanls
First time that thing gets cocked in there on your tailgate you'll need a new one dude. Don't recommend that lol
I thought you where in your mid 30s for some reason JD 😅 I guess not.
I would buy a better Gen-y setup
And that’s not coming back out...
