Marillion is the most underrated band in music buisness. The sound is amazing. It goes to the brain and to 100% to the heart. No other band can touch me like this band. That was in 1984 in the fish era and especially in the hogarth era. Marillion is number one. I am now 55 years old and no other band is on that high musical level, for such a long time. Cheers.
Hey. Same feeling. Sometimes I volontary don't listen to them, to stay in a superficial state of mind for my day. Because when I hear them, my mind goes so far, too far in emotion.....
Brilliant guitarist. Incredible feel to his playing. Gilmore once said it's not always about the notes you play, sometimes it's about the space you leave. Steve gets it.

Always listened to Steve Rothery, Dave Gilmour and Steve Hackett. All masters of their instruments and all legends. Rothery plays with awesome control, never in a hurry and so, so accurate and clean. You can feel the passion that he puts into each note. Total Brilliance!! Thanks for putting this video together.
I'm with you on that one, Andy Latimer, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Paul Kossoff, Malcolm Jones and Snowy White, all have that amazing talent of not overplaying and yet somehow in the end seem to get more out.
Went to see him and his band last night at Cambridge Junction. Amazing!!! His tone, feel and liquidity of playing still blow me away. And such a nice bloke - he hung around after the gig and spoke to everyone who wanted to meet him. One of the most underrated guitarists!
Gig man wrote: "For me, Rothery is the greatest guitar player that's ever lived. Why? Because no one else plays with the same feel and emotion. Most guitar players believe shredding and shoving more notes into a bar is cool and musical... It isn't." Agreed 99 %; the other 1% is: with the exception of David Gilmour.
Steve Rothery, what a legend. The sound he has created is amazing, but the best thing about it is that imho it is totally unique. He doesn't race around the fingerboard, but can if he wants to. He controls and feels every note he plays and the rests in between are just as important. I have tried to play some of the solos and even if I eventually get the notes I can never nail the timing or sound.
Listened with tears in my eyes, so beautiful. Brings back many memories. Thanks for this great selection. Steve Rothery is truly one of the most inspiering guitarists in the prog rock scene.
Absolutely bloody awesome, every one. Makes me want to weep. Nothing moves me like Rothery. This is music at it's best. Thanks for this compilation, love it.
Mine too - in fact it is probably that solo, which I first heard at a boyfriend's house on Real to Reel that made me fall in Love with Marillion back in 84 as a young 14 year old. It's sublime.
Steve's Guitar Solos are a great finalpart of each Marillion Songs . My favorite is from "Grendel" . Marillion has endet for me 1988 . The Fish-Era is the time of my life.
it is the solo from " three boats from the candy", a song which was played very rarely by Marillion before and after 1989... The song is really worth listening...One of the most shorter ever played by Marillion. Phil, a Marillion fan since 1983
He is a great musician. I think the sound of the old Marillion was Fish voice and emotions, and Steve's guitar. Pity they parted. It's a shame that he is not appreciated more. And probably the biggest shame is that after Fish left, the new version of Marillion sort of moved Steve to the background, and really stopped using his talent. Such a waste...
unfortunately TOTALLY BULLSHIT ...unfortunately thats what i belived too and i did not listen to MARILLION anymore for a TOO long time... Steve Hogarth is a fucking phantastic Singer with a fucking phantastic voice and I regret ever year i missed it. Been on Every MARILLION conzert in Germany in the 80 and was really a hardcore fan until Fish left... he was good, but not the only one. Check songs like THE INVISIBLE MAN or OCEAN CLOUD out and tell me they are not good as ever!!!
@@phuketbungalowinfo2757 I Agree. I was a fan in the 80s, not a massive fan but liked a lot of their stuff. I Never listened to any of the Hogarth Marillion until a few months ago. I Have to say most of the songs are more accessible, less progressive/aggressive than the early stuff. You can't say Fish is the better singer or vice versa, it's like when Collins took over from Gabriel, the original fans prefer Peter, the newer Phil. For the record I prefer Phil & I prefer Hogarth over Fish, but that might be because the music they sing on is better in both bands IMO. As for Rothery's playing, maybe there's more solos on the earlier Fish stuff, but on tracks like 'Easter' it sounds brilliant.
Thanks for putting this together. I am not sure that Steve would appreciate that only one piece of his work between 1987 and 2011 makes your top ten ! We loved the fish days as well, but his playing style and dexterity have developed massively since then.
Listening to this just makes me want to dig out those old albums 😌😌😌 Incubus is tops with Fish's vocals, and Jigsaw just took me away when I was 19 (still does 👂💛)

Brilliant..absolutely brilliant.Listened to Marillion a lot back in the days of Fish.Still do and yes he is a great guitarists. Some of them riffs grip you and draw you in.Listen to Jigsaw..fantastic solo by Rothery.
I love Steve's guitar playing. He's in the mold of that band like Brian May is in Queen. Even if you lose a very strong singer you can continue because you have an even stronger guitar sound no matter what
The best solos are from: Script For A Jester´s Tear, Fugazi and Misplaced Chilhood..... Needless to say that the best Marillion is with Fish... (sorry Steve Hogarth)..
Yes, you are right. But, with Fish the band had more power, feeling.... Hogarth is a little bit cold, has not expression (for me). ....I don´t know its just a feeling ..

Fantastic guitarist. Shame it was swallowed by Europap following the departure of Fish. Marrilion without Fish nothing. Fish without Marillion still something but not the same. So both live on reputations and dreams of your fans of what could have been. the rest of us frustrated and disappointed.

Steve Rothery is one of the best guitarists ever. And personally the best of them all.
He playes with heart and soul and he really loves his guitar...it shows clearly, it is simply magic ❤🎉
Having listened to marillion for 30 years i still get hairs stand up on my neck when i listen to these solos
AWESOME
steve rothery and david gilmour genios.
Yes! Andrew Latimer too. Listen to the song Ice by the band Camel.

Steve Hackett too.
And my grandma too!
Why do people ALWAYS have to add some guy they like in other people comments. I'll never get that...
Rothery is astounding, especially if you're into David Gilmour, Andy Latimer, and Edgar Froese .
I'm with you on that one, Andy Latimer, Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Paul Kossoff, Malcolm Jones and Snowy White, all have that amazing talent of not overplaying and yet somehow in the end seem to get more out.

Andy Latimer from Camel should be the 3rd on that list.. :)
It's the bass, drums and keys that gives more notes and rythym, you can't separate Rothery from the rest of the band......
Hello Krishnadas Das, you`re right; it`s the sound of the complete band, not the sound of one musician.
The most beautiful guitar solos in the history of art rock
Steve forever !!!
Nothing more personal than this, to me the greatest of all time remains "Easter".

my god, This Strange Engine is probably one of the best songs ever written.
So perfect!!!

The "INCUBUS" solo is in my 10 best solo list ever. He is essential and elegant. Is not easy to touch the soul with a simple playing
Riccardo Sandri - very well said.
Mine too - in fact it is probably that solo, which I first heard at a boyfriend's house on Real to Reel that made me fall in Love with Marillion back in 84 as a young 14 year old. It's sublime.
Sounds like the loner from gary moore
I heard the "Incubus" solo at California Theater, in San Diego, and I still remember that beautiful emotion.
Brings tears to my eyes.
Great to hear that almost all of these are from the Fish era. Marillion without Fish is like an egg without salt.
Steve is a master of getting the guitar to express all manner of emotions .He’s a genius 🥰
Steve is a master! No need to compare. To me the five guitar masters: Andrew Latimer, David Gilmour, Steve Rothery, Nick Barret and Vitto Bratta.
Great list.
Incubus is my #1.
It's brings the same feeling as David's comfortably numb for me
Mindblowingly awesome> Steve is the best, he moves me to tears with his haunting solos. Missing "Forgotten Sons" though.

What about Gary Moore?
Great List. But I would have thought Easter would be there. And how about Forgotten Sons? Approach, friend........

Easter, most definitely. So many solos from the 'H' era that haven't got a look in that are amazing - The Space, Dry Land, Gaza etc etc.

GREAT Steve!! The magic happened when Fish was in the band and fortunately I have had the chance to see you perform in the good old days...
Grendel’s solos always take me to another planet, what a guitarist
Grendel song itself is from a different galaxy, the lyric is so complex and the music arrangement is utterly intensive
That guitar solo was legendary
Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody, Suppers Ready and Grendel, the four greatest songs, no particular order

Solo from Jigsaw is my favourite solo from my all time favourite guitarist.
I have to say, this solo always makes my back tingle and shiver. He just has the ability to do that, something a lot of 'great' guitarists can't do.
I think all great guitarists can do that - most people just misuse the word "great". To clarify though, Rothery is great. :)

It is not just any guitar solo. They are perfect phrases of an instrument in tears.
Very underrated guitarist imo. Love his playing on the Clutching at Straws album, really atmospheric. Caught him live with Marillion in 1997.
