    From what I was told by a female cop in training, the top speed of most interceptors is 150 miles per hour. Another friend who is a cop told me he doesn't recommend buying a used cop car from a government auction, as their engines are usually pretty worn out from all of the idling and hard acceleration they do.

I don't know much about cars, but I know my bf's was a Dart (souped up) and good friend's was an old caddy souped up. LOL Caddy went 210mph. Went over 120mph on a friends motorcycle. Former police here: was outran once by a hellcat, I was in a Ford Taurus. Also I’ve never seen a police car with a run lock. My agency issued either 2 keys or a key and fob combo so that you can put one on your belt and leave one in the ignition. Also the keys were universal so if you had a Ford key you can unlock and drive any Ford in the fleet, whether it be a Taurus, Explorer, or Crown Vic.

    If there's *any* cop modification you want to have on your car, believe it or not, it's the *brakes.*
    I've talked to multiple officers about what the PDs want most in a car. And they all say the best braking possible. They want their cops to be able to stop fast, moreso than to start fast. The quicker they can stop, the quicker they can get out and do their job. And that made a profound level of sense to me.

    • @joaquinaguilar165
      @joaquinaguilar165 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I've always said this to my brother who is a racing enthusiast. That as much as you put in the engine you've better spend on some great breaks.

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      All cars have the best braking possible though so this makes no sense. The actual most important thing is tyres they are what determines how quick your brakes stop the car the fact is if ABS can kick in then you have the maximum stopping potential the tyres will allow. You can giant 8 piston calipers and carbon ceramic rotors but they will not stop the car any quickers if you are still locking up.

    • @ColonelSandersLite
      @ColonelSandersLite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@gravemind6536 Well, without a tire upgrade, a brake upgrade can really help with brake fade issues. Useful for spirited driving but probably not so much for hard braking to avoid a single accident during a daily commute. Maybe it would be a good thing if you live in the mountains and do a lot of downhill braking though.

    I had a retired police car from Aspen, CO, a Saab. The front wheel drive was great in the winter and I drove it till the wheels fell off, almost. I just got tired of it and donated it to a local thrift shop, and with that giant hatch back they were using it to make deliveries. It had all the bars and places to attach police stuff but no police stuff. It was the original color, and with a ski rack on it people would immediately slow down when I got behind them. I have a Jeep now.

    I used to work in a small university garage that had a public safety department with 5 cop cars. The officers destroyed 3 engines in 2 1/2 years from excessive idling. The oil pumps barely put out any flow at idle speed so scored cylinders and trashed valve guides were the sad result. All the officers had to do was rev up the engines every 5 minutes to 1500 rpm and that would have solve the problem. But that was too much work for them.

These were vinyl seats, no radio, no electric windows, etc. Oh, the only option that was ticked was aircon. It was my second car and I loved it! It was faster than a normal car. Transmission was stronger and shifted quickly. (Squeal tyres going into second). Everything an adolescent shouldn't be driving. It had the range of a motorbike. At less than 200km (120mi) I was looking for the next fuel station. Next car was a 1989 red 3.9 litre EA Ford Falcon wagon ex Western Australia fire department, with a range of 700km. No problems with either car. Former was traded for the latter because of fuel consumption and the latter was stolen. Anyway enough of my nostalgic rant, but you did ask.

Traffic was bunching up into a pack and ramping up to 100 mph like a nascar race. I decided is was safer to be in front of the pack of cars so I got out of the pack and sped up to around 115 mph in my Volvo, I got about a quarter of a mile ahead of the pack and noticed that the charger was keeping up with me.... and then.... red lights in the windshield LOL. Of course I stopped. I explained to the cop exactly why I was going so fast was to get far enough ahead of the pack to create a safetey buffer between me and the pack. Fortuneatly... I was in uniform for my own job as a driver. I had all of my information available and insurance right where I needed. The cop let me go, but he said.... next time just leave home early. LOL...

It runs well, but there seem to have been a few mistakes while they were uninstalling the electrical gizmos. The Driver side stereo speaker in the door was not reconnected properly, the cargo/reverse light over the bed were not reinstalled properly and did not have bulbs, and there were a few holes drilled into the dashboard to mount equipment.
    So far, all of the issues are relatively small things (even the dashboard holes) that can be easily fixed, and I was able to get the vehicle for a fraction of what I would have paid for a similar model with a "civilian" owner.

    I owned an old clapped-out 2004 Vic patrol car. It was my first car, and it served me well for the nearly 7 years I owned it. Best damn $900 I've ever spent. I recently gifted it to my younger sister who is just old enough to start driving as her first car. Being a midwest car, I expect rust to take it sooner rather than later, but mechanically, it's been perfect. That being said, the frame has held up surprisingly well, the issues it has are mostly cosmetic, with the fenders being pretty bad (but it is making its way towards the cab). If she wants to get that stuff taken care of, I wouldn't be surprised if she could get it to 300k miles and beyond. It even survived a highway speed deer collision due to the bump-bar that was left on it. You can see where it hit the bar, but it just bounced right up and over the car with no other damage.
    It was a little wallow-y, you definitely felt the weight of it while turning, but it was comfortable and it sounded awesome when it got over 3500k rpm, plus the trunk is huge. You could seriously store multiple bodies in it if you wanted; it's that big. If there were any for sale near where I moved, I would have bought another one without hesitation.

    In 2022 I bought a 2015 Dodge Charger Police Pursuit v8 AWD. Shortly after buying it a code went off for one of the fuel injectors. So I took it to a shop and they swapped two of the fuel injectors around to see if that's what the problem was while he also was checking on the lifters. Thankfully I had a warranty purchased with the vehicle so it only cost me $100 out of pocket. Soon after the water pump broke and flooded in a parking lot so I had to have it towed to the shop. The shop fixed it so there was another $100 while still saving a ton of money. Not only a week later I ended up getting into a bad accident and totaled it. I didn't have the car long but the thing I didn't know at first was to look at the idle hours. And thankfully I got the full use of my warranty. It paid off! Scotty would you recommend getting another one dependent upon the idle hours? If so, what is a good lower amount of idle hours? Typically the ones I see that show the idle hours are about half of the running hours. If I can get it at least a fraction down should I buy it?

I had a blast with both the ‘74 Dodge Monaco and the ‘76 Dodge Coronet as I was driving these cars when the CHP still had these cars in service. From a distance, if I were behind you in either of these cars, you could not tell the difference between my car and an in service CHP car! Scotty, decent video overall with some good information, but those 0-60 times for the Durango Pursuit and Tahoe PPV are waaaay off. The Tahoe takes ~7 seconds whole the Durango takes ~6.5-8.6 seconds depending on powertrain.
    It looks like you were comparing the Explorer's 0-60 time to their 0-100 time.

Special tires/rims, along with many other modifications (no interior door handles/back doors, nice family car, Lol). It was a well balanced vehicle, powerful and indestructible.

Cars are always breaking down and kept in service until they fall apart. Seats were always breaking, had one that was held up by a small floor jack.

      22 1/2 years in a cruiser. Like you said, no fancy safety features. Usually fleet vehicles fitted with emergency equipment and a prisoner cage, if you’re lucky. After being driven 24/7 365, the interior is trashed, body’s beaten and the fleet mechanics do just enough to get them out of the garage and back to the precincts.
      That being said, I’m recently retired and I already miss driving one.

    I bought a 2013 police utility, explorer. I had to change the spark plugs when I bought it due to the constant idling. Other than that it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. It's pepe, reliable, tough, corners incredibly And great acceleration.
    But I purchased it from the military police so it wasn't used much for high speed travel, mostly idling.

Funny story, I had some red and blue LED light bars installed in my Audi Q7 as I am an UBER party SUV on the weekends and one of the light bars was across the top of the moon roof. Well...I never thought to stand out in front and see what it looked like from outside! I noticed people kept moving out of my way while I was cruising with passengers partying down the 101 towards L.A. LOL...turns out the light bars looked all too familiar to a Police light bar that are in the interior windshield on the cop cars! Oooopss! That was quickly modified before I was ever pulled over for imitating a Police cruiser! LOL
