@@benjichillin5226 I never took the cars to the dealer. I used a very respected local mechanic for inspections and other repairs. When I say other repairs, those were few and far in between. I buy all my tires from tire rack or simple tire and have them installed at a highly rated tire shop in my city. By the way nitrogen fill is a scam as Scotty himself has said many times.
@@benjichillin5226 Check your fuel filter. Check cabin/AC air filter. Check belts for wear every now and then. Replace belts after X miles even if it's still sound, especially on interference engines. Check the owner's manual for correct gas type and recommended maintenance routines.

The secret is buy a Toyota and change the oil every 3000 miles!! That's how I got a quarter million miles on my Toyota and it runs like the day I bought it!!
Depending on the various factors that may be involved, spending about $50-$75 bucks a year on air and oil filters along with oil is ridiculously cheap to keep your vehicle running right.

Just change things like this more often than you even think you need to. I’ve had my coolant flushed and filled twice in 90,000 miles; per the owners manual I could still be running the factory fluid. Guess what. I don’t wanna overheat. I don’t want corrosion inside an aluminum engine. I don’t want my fluid going electrolytic and messing up my computer system. And I don’t want to spend $20K+ on a new car so I spent the whole $75 to HAVE SOMEBODY ELSE change the coolant. Twice. I’d rather spend $75 once every two years than take on a $300+ monthly payment for 36/48/72 months thank you kindly

The problem with synthetic blend is that we have no idea what percent of the oil is synthetic and how much is conventional. My understanding is there is no federal guideline that regulates this and due to proprietary secrecy consumers will likely never know. That's another reason I stick with full synthetic motor oil and have for over 30 years.
Excellent video. I taught the subject of auto mechanics for 33 years. Oil and filters are cheap compaired to buying an engine. I change oil and filter every 5k miles regardless of what the computer says. 4 vehicles and a tractor. I use Mobile 1 in all the vehicles. My class cut open 20 new different filters. NAPA gold was the best. We also found Honda and BMW filters were excellent. I use Honda filters in my 21 Accord. Oil level is checked daily and before trips. Proper maint is key to long life. On turbo engines don't pull in and shut off, let the engine ldle for 3 to 5 min so the turbo can spool down. You don't want a turbo spinning at 70K rpms and shut off because the oil pressure goes to 0 when you shut down. I told our machine shop teacher this and his turbo diesel still had 500K on the origional turbo when he bought a new VW. All he did was change the oil, filter and let the turbo spool down.
I had a 2000 GMC Sonoma with a 4.3 V6 that I sold with 589K miles on the original engine (never opened) and 2nd transmission (junkyard). I religiously changed the oil every 4K miles (quality filter and oil), performed routine maintenance ie: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel and air filters and aside from replacing a water pump and flushing cooling system, and replacing a fuel pump, the truck never let me down and is still on the road. Scotty, you preach maintenance and all should follow your advise.
In 2016 my husband and I bought a RAM 2500 diesel truck. We have been diligent about service and maintenance. (Had I seen Scotty's video prior to 2016 I probably would have pushed for a Toyota). But since we have this truck we really love, im learning how to keep it optimally maintained and trying to get all the life out of it we can while avoiding cutting corners and potentially having to spend more than needed in emergency repairs. I'm *very* grateful to Scotty for sharing his vast knowledge and even his straight dope facts about which car companies really do produce quality and which to avoid.
Well I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.2 liter engine and standard trans. I been changing my oil every 3,000 miles, using what was recommended by dodge 10W30. I slowly switch to a full synthetic 10W30 at about 250,000-300,000 miles and still change oil and filter at every 3,000 miles. I now have 360,000 miles on it and it's still going strong.
I have an engine that can be prone to breakdown from oil sludge, so I actually change my oil a lot more frequently than advised. At 160k miles on 20yo Jeep WJ my valve train and oil pan are extremely clean looking inside.

Scotty, I like all your videos. I got to let you know something about my vehicles. Almost all my vehicles I have gone hundreds of thousands of miles. Starting from high school, the most important thing I found was changing the oil often. And with this I usually used the cheapest oil I could find. I would try not to go over 2500 MI. But I wouldn't change the oil filter but every other time so about 5,000 MI once in a big blue moon I would go three oil changes before the oil filter. 7,000 MI. That being said the lowest miles of vehicle I had that I got rid of would be in the $300,000 MI range. I do have a Honda I've had since high school. And I couldn't even guess as to how many miles that has since the speedometer broke at about 400,000 miles and that I couldn't tell you when that was. On F-150 I and my ex bought at 2001 with only 10,000 miles She kept the changing oil routine up. And she and her new husband depend more on that vehicle than their new cars. She is at 275,000 miles. I have another f-150 2004 . At 365,000 miles, I did a lot of mobile auto body and real estate rehab. And I would travel for these jobs since traveling paid more money and it is a 2001 Chevy van at 490,000 Mi. All on cheap cheap oil but try to never exceed 2500 miles. And the Chevy van and Honda do have a string of magnets attached on engine next to oil filter. That I rap around oil filter. Got to say.. on all these vehicles. I have had to change gas pump more then once. Batteries un known times. Chevy van changed tire bearings 3 times. Both ford f150 rear seals once. Honda, alternator 2 times.
Where would I be without scotty… father of 3 plus a 02 Chevy Avalanche’s in the east coast off the shore where all of our cars and trucks rust and have shady maintenance shops. With my knowledge and history under a hood or under a frame I need that good Scotty in my ear or tips and tricks love it
I had this random bucking feeling in my old toyota truck which started around 160k miles. It felt like a transmission issue but it shifted fine. It was only when accelerating, and typically when cold. Luckily I narrowed it down to being my old (and original) clogged catalytic converter. I replaced it and the problem was solved instantly.
2007 Toyota Prius. Just passed 728,000 miles and still going strong. I drive Uber out of SeaTac airport. I’ve changed the oil every 3,000 miles since day one. 👍🏼
Live on rural ranches. Can't take our vehicles anywhere without getting on highways. Avoiding stop and go city driving and short trips is proving to do wonders. My highest mileage vehicle right now (2005 full size Dodge pickup with hemi) is 320,000 with no heavy maintenance ever.

Excellent video - The plan is for my 2011 Crown Vic to last for 500,000 miles in the harsh Boston, MA area. 4 times/year oil changes, annual air filter changes & new spark plugs every 2 years. Plus I spray my undercarriage with a fresh coating of Woolswax every year to prevent rusting. These are the things a numbskull like me can do, every fall I put my car in the local Scotty Kilmer mom/pop shop & have them road test it to find things I am ignorant to. Last year they found 2 weak ignition coils that were randomly misfiring.
You should be reluctant to blindly trust any mechanics. If your was really misfiring than you would’ve tripped a check engine light. Especially on a car as new as 2011
@@aaronjones5742 Not always the case. My Mum had a 2006 Ford Focus that was constantly misfiring and no check engine light. The check engine light is no indicator of how well the engine is running its literally there if there is a fault code that trips the light and many of the codes that appear on scan tools don't trip the light. Check out any of the videos where Scotty plugs a scan tool into a seemingly fine Mercedes and watch it return 20 fault codes despite there being no lights on the dash. Only way to judge is by checking the oil filters, spark plugs and coil packs and using a scan tool to check the car out as well as listening for unusual sounds or loss of performance and fuel economy.
Acura TL 2008 with 220,000 miles runs like new.. I follow the routine Scotty is recommending. Full silicone oil (Super tech from Walmart like $17 per 5 quarts) and new oil filter every 7500 miles per Acura digital schedule. Air filter change as needed but rarely in winter months with very little dust in the air. I love this car it will probably get over 500,000 miles on it.
this is all 3 things I've never once done in 15 years. i am finally doing all 3 this week although the last 2 are done at same time. 3 things I always thought no way I could do by myself.

My parents have a 93' Dodge Ram Cummins diesel, the 12 valve inline 6. Has 270,000 some miles with no engine issues to this point. I have heard of many of them going up to 500,000+ easily. (with proper maintenance of course)
I always watch Scotty Kilmer. He makes me so happy. I got my oil changed last weekend. I have been using the same oil that he does, for yeas, in all the cars I have owned.
It funny, I have gone months without and oil change, my engine doesn't over heat, the level is still full on the dip stick and just today I checked the percentage on my car display and it said 30% I don't remember when was the last time I changed the oil but it had to be at the beginning of the year. But I'm definitely doing it this week.
I’ve been changing my oil between 3 and 3.5 thousand miles. And now I know I can drive longer if I put a better oil filter. I also learned that dark oil doesn’t mean dirty oil . I’ve used 5w20 on the oil cap full synthetic,Mobil ! I’m still using the same for ten years !!Bought it with 209.000 , now 299.000. Just changed both oils. About 20 thousand miles for transmission. I’ve been working on it for ten years by watching utube several times until I’m ready and confident enough to think I also can fix it myself. Thank you !

My 09 Camry hybrid drinks oil like a thirsty camel in the Sahara, about a quart every 500 miles. With 220k it seems excessive after regular maintenance.
This is a known defect in those mod year Camrys . Toyotas have a great reputation but these years obviously fell off the cliffs. If you take to dealer they will measure and hopefully replace. It’s due to poor design
I totally agree with Scotty! My 2011 Prius currently has 340,000 miles and runs great. I use some great car maintenance software called Automotive Wolf on my computer to monitor the maintenance schedule and send me reminders when any service is due. The software also tracks parts, expenses, fuel mileage and calculates cost per mile to operate my vehicles. My Prius is at $0.07 per mile while my F-150 costs $0.87 per mile. I change the oil every 5000 miles and use only OEM oil and filters. Seems to be working :)

When I got Jeep used it had 150,000 miles . I paid $2000.00 for Jeep and put $1000.00 in work . It runs like new . I listen and do what you say !

270,000 miles on my 98' lexus ls400. I do bare minimum maintenance and it has been in an accident on the right side fender with 60% of its original parts still going with no check engine light and still smooth shifting

My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer with the 4.2 engine is nearing 300,000 miles and is running excellent. This is the best built GM vehicle I have ever owned! It has been exceptional for towing compared to any other SUV I have used! I have a spare transmission and will continue driving this vehicle as long as I can!
I use Wix and Motorcraft exclusively! Years ago I worked for Wix! They’re quality! There are other brands that are good quality as well! Purolator is a good filter! K&N, as well as Hastings!

I have a 2010 Toyota Camry with 235,000 miles on it . Its a retired taxi that got a lot of wear n tear over the years in a busy city . I've replaced spark plugs twice , changed synthetic oil every 4500 miles rated for every 5k, now I changed it a lil under 3,000 due to high milage and always replaced the oil filter every time . I also change the transmission oil every 15000 miles replace cabin and engine filters when needed and rotate my tires every 2nd oil change . Its still running strong. maintenance is key for the long run
In states with subzero weather, like Minnesota, synthetic oil in the engine can mean the difference between the starter being able to crank the engine fast enough to start and not starting. It's pennywise and dollar foolish NOT to use it here. Futhermore, using synthetic in the manual transmission allows you to shift with ease in cold weather, instead of needing two hands to shift gears until the transmission warms up. Petroleum gear lube caused a lot of broken shift linkages in winter. Also, if you have a high performance oil pump, in subzero weather when petroleum oil is thick, it can actually blow the oil filter apart. I've had it happen. But no problems with synthetic oil.

My Mechanic Drove My Car After Changing The Oil And His Exact Word's Were: "This Thing Runs Smooth As Hell! If You Keep Up The Maintenance On This Thing, It Should Run A Million Miles!" This Car Will Be 23 Year's Young In December And It Looks Beautiful, Runs Smoother Than 99% Of Newer Cars That I've Ridden In!
@@label1877 8K miles is okay, if you are disciplined. Many skip or delay, and its more like 12,000 miles. I intend to change the oil at 3,000 miles and if I'm too busy, it might be more than 5,000 miles - but I'm sure you're correct that 8K is fine - when you actually follow that schedule.
@@samtx5518 Yep, mine was 1776cc dual carb with a 3/4 racing cam. It idled like a Harley, and sounded like one with a header exhaust. Snap off those valve covers every oil change to adjust the valves. It would lift the front off ground with the competition clutch. Loved that 1973 super Beatle ...my first car!
1999 Subaru with 215K miles. Harsh environment. I change oil and oil filter every 5K. Air filter every 15K. I do these myself. Every 30K I have a mechanic check it over. Every 60K I have a mechanic check it over and replace the timing belt. So far so good.
My Oldsmobile alero v6 lasted me 305,0000 miles. I really think it could’ve lasted longer, but the car already had problems & had electrical problems within itself. Eventually blew a head gasket & got rid of it. I now bought an 04 eclipse v4 with 150K & the engine is amazing. Definitely going to fix it up.
I use a bypass oil filter (2 micron) in conjunction with a primary filter on my diesel trucks 300k on my 2009 Dodge with syn oil. I change the oil at 10-15k miles. It costs about the same as normal filters because I can go longer between changes. I sent oil samples for analysis for the first 200k but I became confident that it was only necessary to do once a year or so.
@@stevel1475 I use Amsoil I change bypass with oil change. I have been using Rotella T6 synthetic but I have been unable to get. So I'm not sure which oil to switch to.
I have an 08 silverado....with the 4.8 v-8....i bought it in 2010 with 41,000 miles on it...i have 300,000 miles on him now....i change the oil every 4500 miles....it still almost looks as clean as it does when i change it as it does when I first put it in....i am a huge believer in preventive maintenance

That is great advice . You are the right vehicle repair encyclopedia !!! I change my engine oil when It reach 40 % , air filter together with engine oil . For sure , engine oil is cheap ( $ 24 ) , air filter is cheaper ( $ 7 ) , oil filter the cheapest ( $ 4 ) . My principle of doing this type of maintenance is : this is my private property , why waiting for the owner manual book ? Because it's made to emphasize that if late , change not to exceed this number of miles . On top of that , it's my private vehicle ; not a company property , why not being diligent about its maintenance ? Indeed YOU are a vehicle library . GOD bless You 🌹🌹🌹.
Your$4 oil filter... sounds like maybe a Fram? I had a Fram blow out and spin a bearing. Screwed up the crank journal. Only got 116k out of that one. I now spend the $ for a Wix or Motorcraft.

Hey Scotty, I have a 2003 Hummer H2. I bought it in 2007, it had 62000 miles on it. It now has 262000 miles with the original engine and transmission + I have never had to put brakes on it. It’s been the best except for the MPG LOL

yup...here in asia we use km...change every 10k km for semi/full synthetic oil....and 20/40k for gearbox .
Well I currently have 278,000 on my 2001 3.3l 4x4 Nissan xterra. Runs fine and been across the country multiple times.
230k on my 01 tahoe. It's got some issues but hell what can I expect. It runs good for what I do

Depending on the various factors that may be involved, spending about $50-$75 bucks a year on air and oil filters along with oil is ridiculously cheap to keep your vehicle running right.

Just change things like this more often than you even think you need to. I’ve had my coolant flushed and filled twice in 90,000 miles; per the owners manual I could still be running the factory fluid.
Guess what. I don’t wanna overheat. I don’t want corrosion inside an aluminum engine. I don’t want my fluid going electrolytic and messing up my computer system. And I don’t want to spend $20K+ on a new car so I spent the whole $75 to HAVE SOMEBODY ELSE change the coolant. Twice.
I’d rather spend $75 once every two years than take on a $300+ monthly payment for 36/48/72 months thank you kindly

The problem with synthetic blend is that we have no idea what percent of the oil is synthetic and how much is conventional. My understanding is there is no federal guideline that regulates this and due to proprietary secrecy consumers will likely never know. That's another reason I stick with full synthetic motor oil and have for over 30 years.

Excellent video. I taught the subject of auto mechanics for 33 years. Oil and filters are cheap compaired to buying an engine. I change oil and filter every 5k miles regardless of what the computer says. 4 vehicles and a tractor. I use Mobile 1 in all the vehicles. My class cut open 20 new different filters. NAPA gold was the best. We also found Honda and BMW filters were excellent. I use Honda filters in my 21 Accord. Oil level is checked daily and before trips. Proper maint is key to long life. On turbo engines don't pull in and shut off, let the engine ldle for 3 to 5 min so the turbo can spool down. You don't want a turbo spinning at 70K rpms and shut off because the oil pressure goes to 0 when you shut down. I told our machine shop teacher this and his turbo diesel still had 500K on the origional turbo when he bought a new VW. All he did was change the oil, filter and let the turbo spool down.

I had a 2000 GMC Sonoma with a 4.3 V6 that I sold with 589K miles on the original engine (never opened) and 2nd transmission (junkyard). I religiously changed the oil every 4K miles (quality filter and oil), performed routine maintenance ie: plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel and air filters and aside from replacing a water pump and flushing cooling system, and replacing a fuel pump, the truck never let me down and is still on the road. Scotty, you preach maintenance and all should follow your advise.
In 2016 my husband and I bought a RAM 2500 diesel truck. We have been diligent about service and maintenance. (Had I seen Scotty's video prior to 2016 I probably would have pushed for a Toyota).
But since we have this truck we really love, im learning how to keep it optimally maintained and trying to get all the life out of it we can while avoiding cutting corners and potentially having to spend more than needed in emergency repairs.
I'm *very* grateful to Scotty for sharing his vast knowledge and even his straight dope facts about which car companies really do produce quality and which to avoid.
Well I have a 1998 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.2 liter engine and standard trans. I been changing my oil every 3,000 miles, using what was recommended by dodge 10W30. I slowly switch to a full synthetic 10W30 at about 250,000-300,000 miles and still change oil and filter at every 3,000 miles. I now have 360,000 miles on it and it's still going strong.
I have an engine that can be prone to breakdown from oil sludge, so I actually change my oil a lot more frequently than advised. At 160k miles on 20yo Jeep WJ my valve train and oil pan are extremely clean looking inside.
I had no idea all that stuff was going on inside the Oil Filter....Wow!

Scotty, I like all your videos. I got to let you know something about my vehicles. Almost all my vehicles I have gone hundreds of thousands of miles. Starting from high school, the most important thing I found was changing the oil often. And with this I usually used the cheapest oil I could find. I would try not to go over 2500 MI. But I wouldn't change the oil filter but every other time so about 5,000 MI once in a big blue moon I would go three oil changes before the oil filter. 7,000 MI. That being said the lowest miles of vehicle I had that I got rid of would be in the $300,000 MI range. I do have a Honda I've had since high school. And I couldn't even guess as to how many miles that has since the speedometer broke at about 400,000 miles and that I couldn't tell you when that was. On F-150 I and my ex bought at 2001 with only 10,000 miles She kept the changing oil routine up. And she and her new husband depend more on that vehicle than their new cars. She is at 275,000 miles. I have another f-150 2004 . At 365,000 miles, I did a lot of mobile auto body and real estate rehab. And I would travel for these jobs since traveling paid more money and it is a 2001 Chevy van at 490,000 Mi. All on cheap cheap oil but try to never exceed 2500 miles. And the Chevy van and Honda do have a string of magnets attached on engine next to oil filter. That I rap around oil filter. Got to say.. on all these vehicles. I have had to change gas pump more then once. Batteries un known times. Chevy van changed tire bearings 3 times. Both ford f150 rear seals once. Honda, alternator 2 times.
Where would I be without scotty… father of 3 plus a 02 Chevy Avalanche’s in the east coast off the shore where all of our cars and trucks rust and have shady maintenance shops. With my knowledge and history under a hood or under a frame I need that good Scotty in my ear or tips and tricks love it
I had this random bucking feeling in my old toyota truck which started around 160k miles. It felt like a transmission issue but it shifted fine. It was only when accelerating, and typically when cold. Luckily I narrowed it down to being my old (and original) clogged catalytic converter. I replaced it and the problem was solved instantly.

2007 Toyota Prius. Just passed 728,000 miles and still going strong. I drive Uber out of SeaTac airport. I’ve changed the oil every 3,000 miles since day one. 👍🏼
I always used pureone filters n penzoil ultra platinum high mileage oil. My malibu maxx has 376,000 miles. Chevy sent me a coupon for an oil change

Live on rural ranches. Can't take our vehicles anywhere without getting on highways. Avoiding stop and go city driving and short trips is proving to do wonders. My highest mileage vehicle right now (2005 full size Dodge pickup with hemi) is 320,000 with no heavy maintenance ever.

Excellent video - The plan is for my 2011 Crown Vic to last for 500,000 miles in the harsh Boston, MA area. 4 times/year oil changes, annual air filter changes & new spark plugs every 2 years. Plus I spray my undercarriage with a fresh coating of Woolswax every year to prevent rusting. These are the things a numbskull like me can do, every fall I put my car in the local Scotty Kilmer mom/pop shop & have them road test it to find things I am ignorant to. Last year they found 2 weak ignition coils that were randomly misfiring.

You should be reluctant to blindly trust any mechanics. If your was really misfiring than you would’ve tripped a check engine light. Especially on a car as new as 2011

@@aaronjones5742 Not always the case. My Mum had a 2006 Ford Focus that was constantly misfiring and no check engine light. The check engine light is no indicator of how well the engine is running its literally there if there is a fault code that trips the light and many of the codes that appear on scan tools don't trip the light. Check out any of the videos where Scotty plugs a scan tool into a seemingly fine Mercedes and watch it return 20 fault codes despite there being no lights on the dash. Only way to judge is by checking the oil filters, spark plugs and coil packs and using a scan tool to check the car out as well as listening for unusual sounds or loss of performance and fuel economy.
Acura TL 2008 with 220,000 miles runs like new.. I follow the routine Scotty is recommending. Full silicone oil (Super tech from Walmart like $17 per 5 quarts) and new oil filter every 7500 miles per Acura digital schedule. Air filter change as needed but rarely in winter months with very little dust in the air. I love this car it will probably get over 500,000 miles on it.
Moral to this one of Scotty's sagas: Oil changes and filters are much less expensive than engine rebuilds

That cheap oil filter is very crucial for longevity engine. I always change it everytime I change oil. 300K Honda Accord still going.
1. get a toyota or honda, or other known durable engines.
2. change your oil every 5-7k miles, and use ful synthetic.
3. drive conservatively.

If someone does your oil change for you then they’re almost guaranteed to change the filter, and more than likely the air fikter

My parents have a 93' Dodge Ram Cummins diesel, the 12 valve inline 6. Has 270,000 some miles with no engine issues to this point. I have heard of many of them going up to 500,000+ easily. (with proper maintenance of course)

It funny, I have gone months without and oil change, my engine doesn't over heat, the level is still full on the dip stick and just today I checked the percentage on my car display and it said 30% I don't remember when was the last time I changed the oil but it had to be at the beginning of the year. But I'm definitely doing it this week.
I’ve been changing my oil between 3 and 3.5 thousand miles. And now I know I can drive longer if I put a better oil filter. I also learned that dark oil doesn’t mean dirty oil . I’ve used 5w20 on the oil cap full synthetic,Mobil ! I’m still using the same for ten years !!Bought it with 209.000 , now 299.000. Just changed both oils. About 20 thousand miles for transmission. I’ve been working on it for ten years by watching utube several times until I’m ready and confident enough to think I also can fix it myself. Thank you !

Excellent presentation, you always save car owners that love to hear and do the right thing to save their cars from unnecessary wears. My 2011 camry at 163,000 miles still runs like new cos I use recommended oil 0w20 and change oil filter at 5,000 miles during servicing
For my Lexus 2010, I use the same oil brand; however, the recommended oil change interval is at 10,000 miles. Just saying.
My 02 camry has 230,000 miles doesn't use a drop of oil
My 09 Camry hybrid drinks oil like a thirsty camel in the Sahara, about a quart every 500 miles. With 220k it seems excessive after regular maintenance.
This is a known defect in those mod year Camrys . Toyotas have a great reputation but these years obviously fell off the cliffs. If you take to dealer they will measure and hopefully replace. It’s due to poor design

I totally agree with Scotty! My 2011 Prius currently has 340,000 miles and runs great. I use some great car maintenance software called Automotive Wolf on my computer to monitor the maintenance schedule and send me reminders when any service is due. The software also tracks parts, expenses, fuel mileage and calculates cost per mile to operate my vehicles. My Prius is at $0.07 per mile while my F-150 costs $0.87 per mile. I change the oil every 5000 miles and use only OEM oil and filters. Seems to be working :)

When I got Jeep used it had 150,000 miles . I paid $2000.00 for Jeep and put $1000.00 in work . It runs like new . I listen and do what you say !

270,000 miles on my 98' lexus ls400. I do bare minimum maintenance and it has been in an accident on the right side fender with 60% of its original parts still going with no check engine light and still smooth shifting

My 2002 Chevy Trailblazer with the 4.2 engine is nearing 300,000 miles and is running excellent. This is the best built GM vehicle I have ever owned! It has been exceptional for towing compared to any other SUV I have used! I have a spare transmission and will continue driving this vehicle as long as I can!

I use Wix and Motorcraft exclusively! Years ago I worked for Wix! They’re quality! There are other brands that are good quality as well! Purolator is a good filter! K&N, as well as Hastings!

I have a 2010 Toyota Camry with 235,000 miles on it . Its a retired taxi that got a lot of wear n tear over the years in a busy city . I've replaced spark plugs twice , changed synthetic oil every 4500 miles rated for every 5k, now I changed it a lil under 3,000 due to high milage and always replaced the oil filter every time . I also change the transmission oil every 15000 miles replace cabin and engine filters when needed and rotate my tires every 2nd oil change . Its still running strong. maintenance is key for the long run
In states with subzero weather, like Minnesota, synthetic oil in the engine can mean the difference between the starter being able to crank the engine fast enough to start and not starting. It's pennywise and dollar foolish NOT to use it here. Futhermore, using synthetic in the manual transmission allows you to shift with ease in cold weather, instead of needing two hands to shift gears until the transmission warms up. Petroleum gear lube caused a lot of broken shift linkages in winter. Also, if you have a high performance oil pump, in subzero weather when petroleum oil is thick, it can actually blow the oil filter apart. I've had it happen. But no problems with synthetic oil.

My dad didn't share w me the facts of life, but he did show me the internal workings of the combustion engine and to change my oil every 3,000.
When I was young a 2,000 mile oil change was recommended, but I don't think most cars got it
You are throwing money away with a 3,000 mile oil changes. 8,000 miles is minimum for me.
@@label1877 8K miles is okay, if you are disciplined. Many skip or delay, and its more like 12,000 miles. I intend to change the oil at 3,000 miles and if I'm too busy, it might be more than 5,000 miles - but I'm sure you're correct that 8K is fine - when you actually follow that schedule.

VW beetles up until 1975 did not have engine oil filters either, just a mesh at the pickup tube in the oil pan, near the drain plug.
And always adjust the valves
@@samtx5518 Yep, mine was 1776cc dual carb with a 3/4 racing cam. It idled like a Harley, and sounded like one with a header exhaust. Snap off those valve covers every oil change to adjust the valves. It would lift the front off ground with the competition clutch. Loved that 1973 super Beatle ...my first car!
1999 Subaru with 215K miles. Harsh environment. I change oil and oil filter every 5K. Air filter every 15K. I do these myself. Every 30K I have a mechanic check it over. Every 60K I have a mechanic check it over and replace the timing belt. So far so good.

My Oldsmobile alero v6 lasted me 305,0000 miles. I really think it could’ve lasted longer, but the car already had problems & had electrical problems within itself. Eventually blew a head gasket & got rid of it. I now bought an 04 eclipse v4 with 150K & the engine is amazing. Definitely going to fix it up.
I use a bypass oil filter (2 micron) in conjunction with a primary filter on my diesel trucks 300k on my 2009 Dodge with syn oil. I change the oil at 10-15k miles. It costs about the same as normal filters because I can go longer between changes. I sent oil samples for analysis for the first 200k but I became confident that it was only necessary to do once a year or so.

I have an 08 silverado....with the 4.8 v-8....i bought it in 2010 with 41,000 miles on it...i have 300,000 miles on him now....i change the oil every 4500 miles....it still almost looks as clean as it does when i change it as it does when I first put it in....i am a huge believer in preventive maintenance

I'm a huge fan! I'm 71 and like to be as hands-on as possible in life. May I suggest doing a video where you suggest/instruct non-car people - those of us who can't get underneath their cars - how to do the simpler tasks?
Always do them timely but changing oil every 3k is wiser.

For sure , engine oil is cheap ( $ 24 ) , air filter is cheaper ( $ 7 ) , oil filter the cheapest ( $ 4 ) .
My principle of doing this type of maintenance is : this is my private property , why waiting for the owner manual book ?
Because it's made to emphasize that if late , change not to exceed this number of miles .
On top of that , it's my private vehicle ; not a company property , why not being diligent about its maintenance ?

Your$4 oil filter... sounds like maybe a Fram? I had a Fram blow out and spin a bearing. Screwed up the crank journal. Only got 116k out of that one. I now spend the $ for a Wix or Motorcraft.

Excellent comprehensive presentation. It would be great if these spin on oil filters could capture particles larger than 5 micron absolute. I often wonder why these filters have not been capable of higher efficiencies.
Oil filters become more efficient as they collect more particles since those will snag and hold smaller particles as they pass by.

Hey Scotty, I have a 2003 Hummer H2. I bought it in 2007, it had 62000 miles on it. It now has 262000 miles with the original engine and transmission + I have never had to put brakes on it. It’s been the best except for the MPG LOL
I had a 2000 Taurus that had 416,000 miles on it when it died. Never touched the motor or transmission.
