As someone else has said, the Simon and Garfunkel version was a warning - Disturbed's version is rage that the warning was ignored.

THE WARNING The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

Did you notice that the audience was completely silent during the performance, they didn’t make a sound until the song ended, that’s a testament to the power of what you said. The music, the lyrics, and David Draiman’s voice combined grabs you, makes you actually listen to what he’s saying, and makes you feel it as well.

I absolutely LOVE their version of this song but I do prefer the offical video- David Draiman was actually quite sick with the flu for the Conan show but insisted he push on and do it anyway. Did pretty well for a sick guy right?! It’s spine tingling for sure.

David Draiman was sick that day, that was why he was seated. He was upset because someone decided to apply auto tune on part of the performance. He does NOT need that - his voice is always perfect. I heard someone say that God asked him if he wanted the voice of an angel or a demon and he answered "Yes please!"

Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly brings you to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reactions as always guys 💞

I grew up listening to this song by Simon & Garfunkel & have always loved it. Many people have covered this song. Disturbed's version is a much darker take on this song. Peter Hollens & Tim Foust (from Home Free) do a great version of this song. Their voices complement each other perfectly & the layering of their voices is amazing. I hope you will check it out.

Simon & Garfunkel sang this as a gentle reminder to listen to God's words.....Disturbed's version is sung as a much angrier voice of God....Telling us we have failed to heed His warning....I love this version...it's a very powerful performance from David. Part of the reason a lot of reactors to this rendition say how they heard the lyrics for the first time, despite hearing the original many many times, is that David isn't just singing the words, he's smashing them into your brain. Truly talking AND speaking.

Always great to see you guys check out songs from different genres... this is a great performance, and so awesome to see a metal voice sing a song popularized for its soft and sensitive tone in its original form. Another group you have reviewed before (Forestella) also did their own version of this song, and there are plenty of great covers of other popular Simon & Garfunkel songs. I know you guys have checked out SoHyang before, but if you guys can check out her version of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters", that's another memorable performance!

I loved your reaction video. I like the live version but I especially like the official music video they did to this because the visuals bring out the lyrics to this song so extremely well all the way to the very end when the boat with the instruments cross the divide to meet up with those holding the sheet music on the other side. I see so many that cut the video off prematurely at the end and don't catch that last bit of information in their reviews, but to me that ending ties the whole video together by showing us that as a society we need to unite and not have so much division amoung us. I truly love this song!

This is my number 2 best cover I ever heard.
I feel Paul Simon wrote it as a warning for how the world was becoming.
Now Disturbed released this more powerful version as an angry wake up call that they did not listen, and its worse, warning to do better! :)

What always strikes me about the lyrics of this song is the genius of having "silence" represent the evil of repression and suppression of free thought, free speech, and free expression by authorities. A deep and disturbing Silence. Funny that the the band that did this is called Disturbed. And of course this rendition is stunning. Better than the original in that it shows the dpeth better.
