This song, IMO, is about the breakdown of interpersonal communication in the light of new technology, the "neon god" we made being, I think, television. It has been said that Simon & Garfunkel's original was a warning, and that Disturb's cover is the anger that the warning was ignored.

Paul Simon is a poet. Like Whitney Houston doing a Dolly cover, Angelina Jordan doing Suspicious Minds, this Simon and Garfunkel cover becomes David's in a way it was not theirs.

That final high note, where he just goes /completely/ pure on 'sound', then the beat where everything stops... Forget wine glasses, that note shatters /souls/ *

Here you have the meaning directly from the songwriter's mouth:
“One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966
You can see/hear him say this before they begin their performance here:

Paul Simon was only 21 when he wrote this song. Timeless classic artistic achievement. He sent David Draiman a message of appreciation after this performance, which was decades after it was first recorded. This song was a huge worldwide hit then as it is now. Paul Simon is truly one of the best songwriters who ever lived.

The song is about communication. We may have all this technology to better communicate with each other (t.v., social media, computers, e-mail, etc)… but we’re not communicating with each other (the people around you, your neighbors, the guy at the grocery store, we have our heads in our digital devices and not looking straight forward or around us).

This is one of my top three covers of all time 🖤 David took a good folk song and made it his own 🔥
The other two are Bad Wolves cover of Zombie by the Cranberries, and Postmodern Jukebox/Hailey Reinhardt cover of Radioheads Creep. There’s a couple more too but I can’t think of them right now lol

This song was written by Paul Simon in 1964 about his frustration of people’s inability to communicate with each other and their fascination with technology, like TV and radio and not each other. I’m in my 70s and I grew up listening to the Simon and Garfunkel version, but I did not really hear it until Disturbed’s version. Back in the sixties, a common graffiti was “Jesus Saves”. Could that be what Simon was referring to when he wrote about prophets writing on subway walls and tenament halls?

If someone answers you honestly after you ask them how they are, like we do daily, if they dont say “fine and/or good”, YOU own it. And most are not able to handle that answer. So we just continue on with our day hoping everything works out ok for that person. But even just caring enough to ask and making eye contact is a start.

"The words of the prophet are written on the subway walls and tenement halls." That's where the working class...the real people are. So if you want to hear the words of the prophet, listen to what the everyday working stiffs are saying. My interpretation and worth every dime you paid for it.
David Draiman made one lyric change from the original version, although I don't know if it was intentional or not. "And the sign flashed out its warning" was changed to "And the sign LASHED out its warning." It's a subtle yet powerful change, and one that fits so well with this version of the song.

I would love to see this guy react to Billy Strings. He is known for his skills as a musician (as he should be) but I think he would also appreciate the storytelling/lyrics … songs like Watch It Fall, Home, Wargasm, or Turmoil and Tinfoil. It’s almost like you have to listen a few times … once or twice to wrap your mind around the musical skill (live performances hit hard) and then the lyrics start to sink in and it hits even harder.

You used the job scenario but when I listen to this song I immediately think of todays society. We as a people are just bombarded with so many voices and technology. People are speaking some listen some don't. And so many don't really care to hear what others have to say or feel or the opinions that they have. Social views, political views, moral views. We are so divided. And its so sad. I feel like until we as a people no matter what your race, political views or moral views are.. until we can come together as just people of the human race can listen to each other, consider one another, admit that while i might be right about some things I may also be wrong about some things. That all of us have value and worth and can move our society onward. But as long as we stay so divided or out of fear stay silent I just don't see anything ever improving. I feel so sad for the next generation growing up in such a confusing and angry time such as we find ourselves in today.

Grew up hearing this song from Simon and Garfunkel in the 60's and the original is nothing like this cover by Disturbed and this is one of my favorites. The other favorite I have, is this song cover by Pentatonix, which too, is fabulous. Might want to have a listen to their cover as well: th-cam.com/video/gdVjVtpr55M/w-d-xo.html. Cheers, be well.

The bible teach in Revelation about the beast from the sea,the beast from the land and the beast coming up from the underground,666,one six for the alien beasts from the sea,one 6 for the alien beasts from the land and one 6 for the aliens coming up from the underground,or volcanoes or caves.Revelation say people will make a image of the beast from the sea then the beast from the land will give a spirit to this image humans have made.Compare this image with the warning words in this song,The sound of silence especially where we are warned about people making a neon God and bowing before it.So we are warned,Revelation is coming true,be warned and seek the God of the Bible like never before, this song was inspired by a ghost and a vision was inplanted inside him while he was sleeping.Darkness is his friend because he have this halo of protection and lamp of the streetlight protecting him and making it possible to really see.He is speaking about the warnings of the prophets, writings on subway walls and in tenement halls, yes, informal warning, where everyone can see,for the everyman and women, available for everyone, the rich and poor.So listen to this prophetic warning, both in the song,Revelation and my explanation, maybe I am also a prophet.
