I agree with your evaluation. I just bought my wife the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature in red as her Christmas gift. My wife loves to drive it. We also like the high class interior and acceleration of the turbo engine. The self locking mode and stowing of the mirrors as you walk away from the vehicle is really nice. I've been driving a 2014 Mazda 6 for 5 years and just in time for an upgrade. My obvious choice was the CX-5 but my biggest issue with Mazda is comfort. I can't drive more than an hour without feeling numb or back pain in the Mazda. I thought maybe if I go for the Signature trim on the CX-5 with the nappa leather, things will be different. Yesterday I went for a test drive and I felt every small bump on the road. I was so disappointed since this car looks fantastic.
I agree with you. I tested drive both last week and did not think the CX was comfortable but I did love the Rogues seats. Plus I am not planning on punching the peddle every chance I get. I want a nice ride with good gas mileage. Nissan for me.

However after about 5000 km's the seats soften a little and are good. For greats seats, the Acura RDX is awesome. A panorama sun roof would be nice but not a big deal too me. And finally it would have been nice if the center console arm rest could slide about an inch or 2 forward. It feels a little short. All of these issues are very, very minor and not is a deal breaker for me. Some of the pro's of this car are the drive. Power, handling and over all feel. Test drive any car in this class then drive the Mazda and feel the difference. That's what sold me instantly. In a class by its self. Interior quality. Should be compared to the luxury brands like Acura, Lexus, infinity and Audi. I don't think it's quite at that level, but closer positioned there than in the main stream line. Finally is the exterior styling. Keep in mine this style came out in 2017 and it is still crushing every car in it's class like the newly redesigned Nissan Rogue. If you are interested in this car class, do what I did, test drive all the mainstream brands and save the CX 5 for last. You will love it.
we have a 2020 cx5 too and I'll echo your complaints. But the seat issue is not a minor complaint, they are hard and uncomfortable. Destroy my back in 30 mins. The cx5 is also just too small, honestly it is no larger than our old hrv inside. Next, the oem remote start is awful. Next the heated steering wheel is not heated on top or bottom. I also find the steering fake, it is a heavy for the sake of pretending to be sporty while not actually giving back much feedback. I have had the luxury brands, Mazda does not compete. It also needs a complete makeover as it has been around too long and that transmission is missing 2 gears and a few mpg
@@GoofieNewfie I do agree with a lot of what you are saying. The seats are not the most comfortable and I could certainly see how it would be more uncomfortable for some people but not has uncomfortable for others. Like I said other brands have better seats. The rear seat is certainly tight compared to others, but to help with this they did make room under the front seat for your feet where others are tight under the seat. Both of these things are an issue and for people that bought this car for a family I think they will be disappointed. In both of these cases I hope Mazda looks at this when they do a redesign. I recently sat in a Lexus NX 300. The seats are more comfortable, but the rear seats were also bad and certainly not a family car. For driving feel I am very happy with it. Some people don't like the steering feel, but I like it. I never drove the Acura RDX, however I have heard it was much better for a sporty feel. However I also heard this car has a lot of issues with the transmission and electronics. For me the Acura is a good size not too small with more room and more comfortable seats. However the price and and the potential issues above kept me from this car. I came from a 2011 Honda Accord and this car was much better in the areas I've mentioned, but not so great for power. Very bad for passing on the highway and the interior wasn't upscale . I was looking for compact SUV this time and for what I needed this car was the best in the class for me. However, If I required more space I would have gotten the CR V. Over all I am happy with the car , but it is certainly not perfect.

Wait until you trade it in a couple of years from now if you do the value of the rogue will drop your jaws there is a reason why they are doing huge discounts at Nissan just saying.
@@tommy13965 a friend of mine went 2 trade in her 2017 rouge SL and they offered her 16.5 for it as a trade with close to 50k miles. Not sure if thats good bad or ok. For reference the 2018 sienna le awd that I drive was valued at 14.5 as a trade in with 110k miles. Not sure if that's bad good or ok.
When you compare SUVs you need to have in mind space and functionality. The Rogue beats the Mazda. If you want speed go for a Mazda 3. The only thing I like is the turbo engine from the mazda. Also when negotiating at the dealership Mazda is more expensive. Expect to pay 550 -600 lease for a Mazda vs 450-500 for a Rogue. Then, budget wise. Nissan is the way to go.
I prefer the Rogue for its looks and size, but disappointed for its lack of power. If they bimped it up even 10hp to 191hp I think it would be fine. I think the CX 5 looks ok, but I do not share the hype or see the luxury in it that most pundits do. I can appreiate the better power and handling.
Nissan is bit bigger and has more tech, but Mazda is just plan bad ass with its turbo engine. So it all depends on what one wants from the car they own...
10.25" is not touch screen and it has no wireless apple car play. in Canada, it's an 8" touch screen with wireless apple car play. That's the trade of between USA and Canada models
Cx5 for sure. I test drove the regular 2.5L engine in the summer. I remember the rear doors were also able to open out 90degrees. It's just a bit cramped in the back, but we're less than 6ft tall so it shouldnt be too bad.
Mazda is objectively more beautiful. CX5 has proper transmission not a CVT that kills performance and driving soul. CX5 has more premium interior. Mazda is the most reliable brand (Consumer Report). I drove a CX5 (2018) and it handles as early 2000 sedan. Rogue has bigger space, has a CVT that kills gas stations. Rogue has uglier interior (ugly cluster screen, this is not a Mercede$) although is more practical (cordless charging, space bellow console etc). I drove a Rogue (2019) and it handles as 90’s sedan. CX5 is a car, Rogue is an appliance ( it is n o t, a bad word, Rogue is a family CUV). My opinion, if you have to buy one car, buy a CX5. If you have to buy a car and thing else, buy a Rogue and a used miata.
Great review! I would like to know which one is better on bumps and pot holes. I live in New York and the roads are horrible:( I am searching for that riding on a cloud feeling or the closest to it. I would guess the rogue has a softer ride.
Five years ago, I was debating between the Rogue and CX5. After some research, a lot of people complained about the Nissan CVT, so I bought the CX5. Has the Nissan improved the CVT since then?
My understanding is that Nissan has remapped the transmission software. I'm not sure this is the best answer to a hardware fault, rather just delay a potential failure. The failure rate is just far too high. It's not like it's a sensor or a relay issue it's a $6000.00+ potential problem that any NIssan owner should be aware of. Nissan does a great job of offering features at a good price...I learned the hard way that you end up paying in the end.
Not concerned about 0 to 60 times I will buy the all new Rogue, I had a turbo SUV and don't want another. Rogue for overall styling and also the larger size both in and out. Mazda has a stiff ride and basically the same body style for a few years, and less rear seat leg room. JMO
I had a 2014 Rogue and the blind corners in the back almost caused me several wrecks. I liked everything else about it. Have they fixed that in ther 2021 model?
Good review , I lease a 2016 Rogue SL, and it's had absolutely no issues. There were a couple of things that I found missing - the Altima I owned previously came with a garage door feature in the rear view mirror which was very handy. The Rogue SL model comes with an ordinary steel side exhaust outlet, and not chrome tipped pipes at the back. The air filter is obviously designed to discourage DIY air filter changes, and the tranny doesn't come with a dipstick. The panoramic roof doesn't come with an alarm that lets you know its open when you lock up (its very easy to park the car with the roof open, and this would be catastrophic with leather seats and a heavy rainfall). And lastly, why don't these car companies incorporate digital recording thru their cameras ? Otherwise I have to install another camera to record negligent driver behaviour. I think the Mazda will appeal to older drivers who look for longevity and classic lines, the Nissan will appeal to younger drivers who are looking for dash and splash, but don't think about 5 years down the road when the CVT craps out. Anyways, my current Rogue kinda looks like the Mazda, and I don't like the look of the new Nissan (reminds me bit of the Juke). Thats my 5 cents worth.

I cant wait for the remodeling of the cx-5 coming in 2022-2023 that will once again take the segment by storm and set a new standard for this segment. Mazda not only made a nice beautiful car but it chalked it full of safety features starting in 2015 which forced other car makers to transition and do the same in 2016-2017 models mazda set the standard for what should be standard in these compact suvs and the rest of the industry has followed suite since. Cant wait to see what mazda has in store for new gen models coming out soon
One big point you miss is the MPG or L/100K. The turbo engine is a gas guzzler compared to the rogue's 35MPG highway. With the extra trunk space, roomier interior, and better gas mileage, the rogue is a good option for road trips.
Mazda all the way! Look at that beautiful interior and the wonderful and elegant styling. That Rogue's CVT makes me want to be sick. I can't stand those transmissions.
I never understood this, is this like an American thing? where you guys just want to own every little piece of equipment and every latest technology, why do people have to own two cars?

This comparo is unnecessary for anyone who is a real driver and has driven both. OF COURSE the CX-5 is a better compact SUV. Ask yourself: 1.)which one looks better? 2.)which one has the most power/speed (turbo model)? 3.)which one has a REAL transmission, not a damn CVT? 4.)which one has an upscale interior? 5.)which one has the BEST handling? AND #6.) which one has the BEST quality/reliability? All answers are MAZDA CX-5

@@joezullo6923 I didn’t know that - thanks for the input. And the console is a questionable spot to place the wireless charging- it would be a toss up between opening up the console or just plugging in your phone!
Mazda CX5 is great at the engine, fuel consumption and driving pleasure. Nissan Rogue is always more comfort, more balance among driving pleasure, engine and comfort. The only thing Nissan can not use a more powerful engine is that because of the CVT Transmission. CVT Tends to damage early when Strong engine is working with it. CVT may not get too much pressure power from engine, it will slip then broken.

“My God it almost snapped my neck” lol great review
Yeah, that was a deal-breaker for me :)
I'm paying 485/mo for 6 year loan on cx5 signature...can't imagine paying just as much to lease the rogue lol
@@Ragnar707 yes. Right now the car market is crazy
Love the Rogue!
Very good review, as always!
Thank you
The Mazda looks too sleek, so I prefer the more domineering and "masculine" exterior of the Rogue
rogue looks more premium
@@asumaran lmao but it does look more premium
I prefer the Rogue for its looks and size, but disappointed for its lack of power. If they bimped it up even 10hp to 191hp I think it would be fine. I think the CX 5 looks ok, but I do not share the hype or see the luxury in it that most pundits do. I can appreiate the better power and handling.
Agree 💯 %. Thought i was the only one
And they did exactly what u asked for in 2022 Nissan Rogue with Turbo engine.
@@jackkiller21 exactly 2022 now have a 1.5 turbo producing 201 hp
Nissan is bit bigger and has more tech, but Mazda is just plan bad ass with its turbo engine. So it all depends on what one wants from the car they own...
The 2021 in US, has a 10.25 screen.
Maybe the 100th edition still has the old screen?
Maybe
@@SamCarLegion Even the base model has the 10.25" screen and the new Mazda 3 infotainment system.
Is not touch screen though.
I went from a 2011 Rouge to a 2021 mazda cx5 I love my mazda. My husband bought the 2021 Rouge platinum.
Great review! I would like to know which one is better on bumps and pot holes. I live in New York and the roads are horrible:( I am searching for that riding on a cloud feeling or the closest to it. I would guess the rogue has a softer ride.
Nissan has a softer ride
Five years ago, I was debating between the Rogue and CX5. After some research, a lot of people complained about the Nissan CVT, so I bought the CX5. Has the Nissan improved the CVT since then?
No they’re not,,their design never never change,,
Yeah I heard it improved
My understanding is that Nissan has remapped the transmission software. I'm not sure this is the best answer to a hardware fault, rather just delay a potential failure. The failure rate is just far too high. It's not like it's a sensor or a relay issue it's a $6000.00+ potential problem that any NIssan owner should be aware of. Nissan does a great job of offering features at a good price...I learned the hard way that you end up paying in the end.
@@jaietor5101 the Xtronic CVT is much improved
I will pick this madza any day , Nissan are junk
The new Rogue absolutely wins for me.
Not concerned about 0 to 60 times I will buy the all new Rogue, I had a turbo SUV and don't want another. Rogue for overall styling and also the larger size both in and out. Mazda has a stiff ride and basically the same body style for a few years, and less rear seat leg room. JMO
Did you have a problem with the engine or just want better gas mileage? which turbo suv did you have?
I had a 2014 Rogue and the blind corners in the back almost caused me several wrecks. I liked everything else about it. Have they fixed that in ther 2021 model?
It’s all about reliability!! The Mazda brand was voted most reliable vehicle!
The horsepower is fine. The low end V8 like torque is what keeps the Mazda exciting. It's a driver's car.
Good review. Thank you
Sam, even though I am not a turbo fan the Rogue I believe does not have this option?
No turbo
The 100th Anniversary (2021) Cx-5 is still sporting the old infotainment for Canadian market?
Yes
Is the Mazda available with a 6-speed manual?
Not in Canada, I know in Europe yes
@@SamCarLegion @AX5Z Yes in Europe have 6MT but not turbo editions in all countries (Greece) and see price difference Canada (top dog CX-5 SIGNATURE) - Greece (top dog takumi plus) not turbo engine and the price is.....51.200 euro (over 80k canadian) dollars . www.mazda.gr/Portals/4/adam/Contents/Y329Wzk9Yk-IVOuFiFaagQ/Link/Mazda%20pricelist%2010%202020.pdf Oh my God...
Sadly the Canadian Spec didn't receive the new system as the Mazda 3 however in the US we got it. Maybe next year. As to why the disparity i don't know.
yes you are correct.
the fact that newest generation models of cars like the rav 4 honda crv and nissan rogue are being compared to the same 2017 remodel and generation of the cx-5 is all you need to know about how good the cx 5 is and was ahead of its time when this generation was introduced in2017..
Mazda CX-5 is the winner 👍👍👍👍👍
I like continues line and simplicity on Mazda exterior.
Интерьер Мазды безобразен и безвкусен. Воздуховоды блестят как сопли на заборе. А новый красавец Роуг мы в России увидим ещё не скоро, жаль.

I don’t really think Turbo is a fair comparison. A Non turbo CX-5 would have been more on point...
There are back seat release "levers" on the left and right of the rear compartment. They look like anchor points but are actually release levers
You said that the Sentra drives better and is sportier than elantra but you prefer Elantra because is more comfort, you just hate nissan
Nissan sucks bro
It’s not a 2021 cx5. Also how did u get these lovely red seats? I thought they were only available in the carbon edition
It is a 2021 Model 100%
Cx5 turbo and 6 speed wins
I feel bad for people that pick the nissan because in the very near future you most likely have to spend another $5000 for...........
Not true!
Very simple to break it down. If you're a driver get the Mazda and if you like to be driven then get the Nissan.
If it has a cvt I dont want it. I have a subaru as a second car it has cvt and thats why its my second car.
Lol
I never understood this, is this like an American thing? where you guys just want to own every little piece of equipment and every latest technology, why do people have to own two cars?
Its simple. My wife and I work very hard for a living and we need 2 cars. She takes one car to work and I take the other car to work. We have two cars as necessity. I find it odd that you can't understand why one family house hold has 2 cars. An you say "americans" have to have 2 cars. I know many people all over the world who have 2 cars. Lol
@@interestedtech1 idiot. If the second car is driven by your wife then technically you yourself don't have two cars, I'm talking about people who own 2 or more cars for "themselves"

21 Rogue crushes the cx 5. So much more and more advanced safety features, infotainment features, and doesn't look like a car that is trying to be a suv/cuv. Nissan nailed it with the redesign!
this is a 2020 mazda cx 5 not a 2021..many people are getting this confused on youtube. the 2021 has lane keep assist on all trim levels
This is the 2021

Purchased the 2021 Rogue Platinum after the test driving the 2021 CX5. Mazda had an awesome ride but you cannot even use the back seat. So it may as well be a 2 seater. And whoever said that the CX 5 had comparable cargo space lied to the Rogue is just stupid. No comparison at all. The CVT has improved over the years. Again, Mazda drives nice but after that?…………………
I love Rogue’s design, it’s much nicer than CX5, but I prefer the Mazda’s interior...
The Rogue looks like it has very comfortable thigh supporting front seats unlike the crappie seats in the CX-5
Terrible comparison. A turbo with a 1.5 cvt
Cmon man
Give me what's under the hood of the CX-5 and the rest of the Rogue. It's a matter of what your needs are, in my case the Rogue checks most of the boxes.
HAHAHA you obviously had fun with that Mazda. Loved to see it. Its why I bought a Mazda 3
Rogue: Next generation Aztec. Designers must've had a little too much DMT or K2.
CX-5 because of its design, power and handling. However, I wish it had the panoramic sunroof and wireless phone charging that the Nissan has.
You're right, no pano available for the Mazda but wireless charging is available as an option although it would go in the console which I don't think is a useful spot.
@@joezullo6923 I didn’t know that - thanks for the input. And the console is a questionable spot to place the wireless charging- it would be a toss up between opening up the console or just plugging in your phone!
Rouge best
I love both...but CX5 is better
The CX looks more luxury and the Rogue has a rugged look. Prefer the Rogue myself.
Actual output with regular fuel is 227 hp, not 224 for the CX-5 engine
If only the CX 5 was a little bit bigger compared to its rivals. Hopefully the next redesign addresses that.
Compare the CX-5 with the Tucson please.
The Rogue has a CVT Transmission- there is nothing else to discuss which vehicle is better! Any vehicle with a CVT is a loser!!!!
I drove a reg mazda cx-5 and found it slow compared to the Nissan Rogue. It's like there's no torque in the mazda but my protege was the same way.
Do you work for nissan? No one's believing that Nissan is better than Mazda buddy
That's what happens when it goes way up, you stand under it and it shuts down on your head. Lol
These are two different vehicles. Why would you compare the Nissan to this instead of the non turbo CX5????
