Thing I'm frustrated about the most with Chris Pratt is that even if you weren't gonna get Charles Martinet, there'd still be much better choices then Chris Pratt. To name one, I think Danny Devito would've been a good choice (he was actually approached for the original movie). Even Bob Hoskins was a better choice.
Also voicing an entire main character thats just cracked out Jack Black for Brutal Legend, clearly having some love for Undertale, and other things through the years show he at least know what the franchise is before showing up (every chrisp rat line reads like he has never heard of anything mario)
It's like speaking the words from an Italian accent in an American accent. Like not actually speaking IN the Italian accent, but rather wrote down a sentence from somebody with an Italian accent and all the little unique sounds that come along with it, then just read it in an American accent.
Soooooo why didn't they just get Charles Martinet exactly? The dude's still alive, and this is an animated movie. You don't need a younger actor for a voice role.
I'm not even convinced by the "his usual Mario voice would get annoying" argument. Charles Martinet is a real voice actor, one who's been doing the voice for three decades at this point, I don't doubt he knows how to make it work for a feature length movie.
@@Sugarman96 He would have to talk with a more normal voice at times, because the game Mario voice works only because you hear it at times. "Itsamee! Wohoo!". Those work, but picture him reading Shakespear with that voice, does not work. And if he used a normal voice he would sound like a 80 year old man.
The thing I don't get about some people's defensiveness over the Mario movie is defending the studio, really. People know what kind of films Illumination makes, we know about what level to expect this to be at. So why pretend otherwise just because it's an IP that you like? I don't even think I'll really dislike this movie, but man going to bat for it this early feels ridiculous to me.
Obnoxiously defensive fans are always annoying for sure, but I’d also prefer if people wouldn’t just wait to see if a film is good or not before completely writing it off.
I don't have a horse in this race but this looks significantly better (visually at least) than any other movie they've made up to this point. The reaction from both sides has been ridiculous. About a movie that isn't even out yet.
My favorite part is that they kept Mario's catchphrases and sound effects, and yet he just sounds like some schlub from California who works at a hardware store. It doesn't work at all, and I feel like even children will be able to tell how off that is.
I think the bubbly curvy character design is kind of cute and fits the mario universe. Almost reminds me of play dough for some reason. I don’t really like the character voices. I think they should have been more cartoonish and less modern sounding. Overall it doesn’t upset me as much as Adum. I think I’d enjoy watching it with my friends 5 and 7 yr old boys to see their reaction. Probably wouldn’t feel pulled to sit down and watch it solo though.
Agreed on the style. It does have a clay texture, especially the Toads. I imagine they feel like those squishy stress balls that slowly inflate back to form that are super popular now.

I feel like they could make bank on a Mario CGI tv series with this same style. The Sonic Boom show was successful and Mario's one of the most recognisable characters on the planet, with adult and kid fans alike, so why don't they?
I feel like the worst thing a voice actor for an iconic character can be is non-committal. Just go for it, dude. All the other actors feel at the very least inspired.
I don't know if I just can't tell cringe from actual enjoyment anymore, but the dead-serious "let's-a-go" made me happy; it seemed like a parody of a movie adaptation.

Chris Pratt is only taking inspiration from The Super Mario Bros: Super Show 🤨 Like how are you people hating on this movie because of him?! I think he's gonna do a fantastic job of portraying his Brooklyn New York voice for Mario instead of an Italian accent! 😌
He’s slowly realizing how Jack Black is the only real VOICE actor on display and everyone is becoming increasingly dogshit alongside him because he’s actually trying
The only good thing I can think of is that everything looks close to the original (they MURDERED Mario's butt unfortunately) and it doesn't have that weird Illumination fuzz around everything. And Jack Black as Bowser is awesome.
honestly, bad casting aside, I wish they would just go back to hand drawn 2D animation since most CGI based animated movies tends to blend together now a days due to the style and look of the CG effects always looking too similar. plus, I just miss traditional 2D animation in general which always looks better to me, especially since you don't get that uncanny valley effect & rubber band physics that never looks natural to me.
@@soapbiter36577 except it does. literally every single CG movie looks the same since they don't change the art style whatsoever. if you compared the CG to a movie like this to a Disney CG animated film, they would look exactly the same in terms of the animation and art style. and since this style of animation has oversaturated the market with most animated films having the same exact type of look to them, it's easy to see why I would make this kind of statement. with 2D animation, you can go in any direction and use any kind of art style, but people seem to think that it would cost more money but I find it hard to believe. I also find it hard to believe that people would look at how many CG animated films has came out within the past decade and not see a repetitive issue.
@@EpicJasonX9000 This movie does not have the same art style as luca, or the bad guys, or puss in boots, or across the spider verse, or the most recent dragon ball movie. It's fine if you prefer 2D movies but it's a bit unfair to have such a reductionist look on cg as a medium.
Do that, skip hiring the celebrity voice actors, and pipe all the extra money you would have spent on animation and the celebrities into the writers and jokes. Instant classic.
@@soapbiter36577 no, it's completely fair since the market is oversaturated with CG animated films. and since many of them have very similar art styles, they come across as the same since there's very little differences in order to separate them. I didn't say they have the same "exact" art style, don't misrepresent my point. what I'm saying and what you've failed to understand is that since the art style, designs, and execution of the CG animation looks so similar to most CG animated films that has been released within the past decade, they blend together as all looking too similar. and since there's no 2D animated films to compare & contrast, it comes across as jarring to see every single animated film use CGI and always seeing the same type of style, facial animation, movements, designs, and even backgrounds always being used and reused. it's not a reductionist look, it's a fair criticism and an observation that you're just overlooking. it's so uncreative and unoriginal to keep using CGI when traditional 2D animation can fix a lot of the problems that comes with CGI like the uncanny valley effect which is still an issue. most CG animated films now a days have too similar art styles, so, it is completely fair for me to say that they all look the same.
I’m excited for it because I like Mario. I don’t know why people shit on it for having a lot of references. Should the movie not reference anything at all, no power ups and be different than the actual game? I feel like they are doing a great job of portraying the mario world in a movie setting so far. Though I will admit the writing probably will be ok at the very best. And some of the voices could use some rework and some could use a recast (mario).
@@BradsGonnaPlay I’ve been playing mario since a little kid and seeing the mario world represented in a new way that my kid self would dream of is cool to me. Idk what else you want me to say. My daughter will be almost three when this movie comes out and she really wants to see it, and I think she’ll have a great time with it. It’ll be her first theater experience, and I’m excited about it. The first movie I remember seeing in theaters was Independence Day and I was scarred with childhood trauma scared of aliens for a while as a result, so Mario will definitely be a better experience haha
You can make a kid's movie good for adults. Best example of this in my life is Big Hero 6. Genuinely good movie, very well paced, cool world, good character arcs and the first time I saw it I was 21 years old. No nostalgia associated with it. It is a movie made for kids but with plenty of adult themes which is how children's movies should be.
i personally dislike big hero 6, but i can see the charm. Personally I'd think of classic Disney/ Pixar movies, Ghibli Films and some Dreamworks films. Hell, the movie that most resonates with me in this regard (being enjoyable for both kids and adults) might be the iron giant!
@@philatio1744 That's fair. I just think it was actually aiming to do something cool and unique and discuss hard topics that so many awful kids movies hold your hand through. And yeah, Studio Ghibli sure. I also still get loads of enjoyment out of movies like Chicken Run and Emporer's New Groove. They just have more subtlety and intrigue than baby glove kiddie movies like this piece of shit.
Another example is, ironically, the Sonic movies. They're obviously aimed at kids but had humour and story elements that adults could enjoy (e.g. "look what came out of my eggsack" from the first movie.)
Another reason why I hate for voice actors to be celebrities only chosen upon star power and not talent is that it rips an ACTUAL voice actor or perhaps some new undiscovered talent from the spotlight. Call me an old cynical fart but I hate knowing that these animated movies are all going to make some 100 millionaire plastic arse celebrity a tad bit richer by annoying me with a mediocre performance for 2 hours when I wanted to hear THE CHARACTERS I CAME TO VIEW.
2:24 I'm glad that Seth Rogen didn't voice yet as stoner gorilla so since they're doing more clips and trailers, it will spoil enough for this. They already did few performances and I love the choice of putting Charlie Day as Luigi (perfecto Italian voice ever) and Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach which saved a bit in her cutesy role. Even Keegan-Michael Key sounded almost close to the Toad cartoon from Super Mario Bros Super Show.
I have to agree with Adam. This movie is more for kids. It is better for any adults to watch this after the dvd/blueray/streaming service is available. Anyone can go into the theaters, but the theater is mostly going to filled with hyperactive kids, and it is more for them to get into the Mario series.
I know why people would get weirdly defensive over his reaction this time - Adum said he doesn't like Mario's face and that he wants to punch it. Calling it right now, thats what people are gonna be mad about
To be fair, much like Sonic The Hedgehog, I myself don’t have nostalgic attachment to the Mario franchise except for the classic Super Mario Bros. Yet, I still find it the movie anticipating.
"How do we get around this offensive italian accent?" "Idk, hire an Italian voice actor and it won't be offensive." ....... "Nah we'll just hire Chris Pratt that seems like the cheaper and easier option."
The way they designed Peach is so bad 💀 like her body looks both way too thin but also super soft in a weird way and her face looks odd because of her nose. It's just so funky looking
After the movie comes out there should be a re-dubbed version with different Mario, Luigi, and maybe even toad voice actors. Maybe some different lines too. Like an Abridged Mario movie.
6:04 Adum, I believe it was called the Emoji Movie. All honesty I think this movie might do a good job, Illumination has a record of going on a positive to mixed level of reception. I don't really care if Chris Pratt is mario, all I want to see is what the plot is, and overall I am happy they arent going on that damsel in distress scenario that is overplayed in those mario games.
Princess Peach with an edged weapon is very disturbing. Mario characters tend not to weild weapons designed for murder like guns or halberds. Princess Peach skilfully picking a halberd off the ground really makes the magical, colourful world of Mario this movie is making an attempt to portray crumble in on itself.
@@ohemdoublegee Arin's been notoriously a dick to his friends back then like Jontron and Chris O'Neil with OneyPlays, now few people from those days want to associate with him
A good way to say what’s wrong with Pratt’s voice is that he’s not trying. If he did his own voice as Mario, but tried with effort and emotion, people wouldn’t be so harsh on him.
People are shitting on Chris pratt's voice in these trailers (which is deserved, its awful) but MAN. I cannot stand peach's voice. She just sounds like some random girlboss archetype with her sassy "no pressure xx" one liner in the trailer. Why do all the voices in this movie just sound like regular people doing their regular voices? Why couldn't they just give Princess Peach the high pitched sugary sweet voice she's always had?
Personally, I think this movie could be pretty decent. I'm trying to link all these scenes together, and I see something that can be really well done, but who knows. It's still illumination at the end of the day.
Its always amazing how you can fuck up and overwrite such a simple character. Its Mario! It's like fucking up drawing a triangle. He is slightly doughy who jumps around and has adventures. Its like fucking up drawing a rectangle.
"The comic book marvel people" Yeah thats two seperate groups adam. None of the dismarvel sheep skin wallets have ever opened a comic but need to tell everyone about what an expert they are about it
Exactly. You don’t want to be thinking of Jack Black or Chris Pratt or any actor when watching a cartoon… That’s why these celebrity castings are stupid: kids don’t care, and adults get distracted… with no help to the financial bottomline… actually, they hurt the bottomline, because celebrities cost more money than regular voice actors.
I have avoided watching any of these, so when I heard Mario's voice for the first time I yelled "THAT'S MARIO??" Shit, I could do a better Mario voice!
He’ll be useless, Peach will save him constantly, until the end when she’s getting overwhelmed he’ll suddenly do everything effortlessly and get her back on her feet so they win together
Honestly it looks like the most generic milquetoast movie, super safe, doing nothing interesting, designed to appeal to the normies. The Mario theme as a movie orchestral sounds so bad. I just can't with this. Like princess Peach is the generic girl boss so they don't get accused of being sexist, Mario is a bumbling idiot that somehow becomes the best hero ever of all time, it's been done a billion times already.
But mario failing at first is actually a really great way at representing the games. When someone plays mario for the first time, they die a lot. Also if you didn't like the trailer song, I would recommend watching the game awards clip. The music in the movie sounds great so far
Does anyone hate it when trailers play like a sentimental piano version of the theme song, instead of just playing the real theme?

Thing I'm frustrated about the most with Chris Pratt is that even if you weren't gonna get Charles Martinet, there'd still be much better choices then Chris Pratt. To name one, I think Danny Devito would've been a good choice (he was actually approached for the original movie). Even Bob Hoskins was a better choice.
I've been saying Danny Devito would be a perfect Mario since the casting for the film was announced. Glad I am not alone.

Jack Black was in the Atari Pit fall commercial, he's already part of the videogame history.
Maybe that's why he's not out of place?
@@Sugarman96 Is that an argument people are making? Ugh. Yeah, I have no doubt he would have made it work just fine.
Because "Star Lord" is more famous. That's all that matters in these cynical souless cash-grabs.

The worst part is I think in the announcement trailer it said Charles Martinet would make an appearance, its so insulting aaaaa

The thing is the style actively contradicts the supposed mandate Nintendo has with the Mario artstyle in the games themselves.

honestly, bad casting aside, I wish they would just go back to hand drawn 2D animation since most CGI based animated movies tends to blend together now a days due to the style and look of the CG effects always looking too similar. plus, I just miss traditional 2D animation in general which always looks better to me, especially since you don't get that uncanny valley effect & rubber band physics that never looks natural to me.
I miss 2D animation too but totally disagree about every cg movie looking the same
@@soapbiter36577 except it does. literally every single CG movie looks the same since they don't change the art style whatsoever. if you compared the CG to a movie like this to a Disney CG animated film, they would look exactly the same in terms of the animation and art style. and since this style of animation has oversaturated the market with most animated films having the same exact type of look to them, it's easy to see why I would make this kind of statement. with 2D animation, you can go in any direction and use any kind of art style, but people seem to think that it would cost more money but I find it hard to believe.

Why am I loving Adam at this camera angle wtf
I’m excited for it because I like Mario. I don’t know why people shit on it for having a lot of references. Should the movie not reference anything at all, no power ups and be different than the actual game? I feel like they are doing a great job of portraying the mario world in a movie setting so far. Though I will admit the writing probably will be ok at the very best. And some of the voices could use some rework and some could use a recast (mario).
I’ve never understood that logic of “If I like Super Mario, I have to be excited for everything the franchise does”
@@BradsGonnaPlay I’ve been playing mario since a little kid and seeing the mario world represented in a new way that my kid self would dream of is cool to me. Idk what else you want me to say. And I don’t see how that’s a bad thing. It’s cool to see a video game movie really feel like they are taking the source material and making it work for a film. Not just taking the characters and making something totally different. Mario means a lot to me so I generally like a lot of the things it does.

I can't believe Adam didn't like it, but he didn't study the twelve principles of animation so his opinion doesn't count.
Checkmate atheists.
Even if the movie isn’t gonna be good, I at least appreciate that we for once have a video game movie actually RESEMBLE the game it’s based on.

After the movie comes out there should be a re-dubbed version with different Mario, Luigi, and maybe even toad voice actors. Maybe some different lines too. Like an Abridged Mario movie.
That's it. I'm calling Shigeru Miyamoto Mr. Nintendo from now on. Or better, Nintendo-san
Especially because right beside her is a toad wielding a frying pan. You know, the weapon peach has actually used many times in the games.
