This comment is not about this video in particular but I've been inspired by you and I've used Chinese in the two establishments I'm a regular at despite being studying it for just one month. The owners of both places have seen me many times (to the point one prepares my lunch order without me saying anything and the other remembers my hair dye colour code) and their reactions have been totally positive. They seemed delighted I've started learning their language and they've offered tips and help with practice. I don't know if I would have had the courage to do it had I not been a regular, but in my case it has been a great experiment and something that will keep me motivated to learn more (because I know they will ask about my progress when I return!). Thank you for your videos!

Great job!!! Amazing, really nice to see someone, especially an English speaker take on the challenge of learning mandarin, there are only a few of them especially on this platform. Although I do have to say at 1:41, 怪不得, the 怪 sounds more like the second tone instead of fourth, and some other small details like one very common theme is switching out the fourth accent for the 2nd or 3rd, but still, super impressed, your grammar is better than mine lol.
This is fascinating to watch, and impressive that you have conquered conversational Chinese and Japanese! I love to travel and love languages - I learned conversational Spanish from scratch backpacking through Mexico and Guatemala for about a year. I have considered the idea of retiring to a non-English speaking country (still many years away), and you’ve reinforced the idea that it is doable.
Re: 1:06 , I use my poor N5 Japanese every day in Tokyo, and my frequent errors are never corrected by anyone. It's still good practice, but I wish I got feedback and corrections. Is this different in China?

Another interesting video. You actually showed how language bubbles can imprison people from fully experiencing the dominant culture of the country they are living in. Until you told me that it just wasn't Western issue, but an all native language groups issue, I was unaware of how prevalent it was. After you pointed that out, I realized I should have known better, because I've known people whose first language was not English, also grouped in there native language bubbles in primarily English language dominant countries. I guess it just shocked me that I met people in Asia who couldn't understand why I would want to learn an Asian language, when I could get by in my own language in Asia. It is individuals like you who choose to not get by, but actually become involved in where they live by learning to speak dominant language. Your channel is so unique in that you just don't show that you can learn to speak a second or third language, but that it enriches your experiences and changes your understanding of the both culture and individual people, when you can converse in their language. You don't sugar coat the difficulties and work that is required to learn a second language, but then you demonstrate what is possible once you have put in the work. Thanks for the inspiration. I eagerly await your next video.
That's right! The stereotype is that Western people come to Japan and get caught in language bubbles, but actually it happens to people from all different countries. It's easier to be comfortable while surrounded by familiar people and languages.
I've been learning Chinese along side with English. I think it's fast to learn speaking Chinese thanks to the pinyin, which is alphabet-based, but it's more struggling for writing. You're fluent in the top three popular languages in the world including Japanese, Chinese and English. How amazing !
My mother and my paternal grandmother have a good relationship (I'm Chinese and both my parents are from the countryside) especially since my mother helps her a lot with health kind of stuff (she tells her what's better to eat and use) When I think about it, my maternal great-grandmother was scary as heck, but I loved her too ^^
I enjoy your videos so much, you encourage me to travel abroad (when this whole situation allows us). Please keep doing vlogs, they are genuinely good.
Oh my gosh. Tonal languages! My ex is Vietnamese. It is so hard to speak. Still if you manage to say a few lines you build a connection. I actually sang at a Vietnamese wedding and got a standing ovation. I am a very good mimic.
I think you Chinese is absolutely brilliant, native speaker level just like me. I was born in Beijing and moved to Australia at 12. So I am also fluent in English.
Years ago Anming bought a piece of arid land in a foreign country against other people’s opinions and planted wheat. Today she is on a combine harvester happily reaping her labour of love. :D
The most interesting thing is that you really know their customs and family issues! That chinese man was took by surprise when you talked about Mother-in-laws!
Curious, as an English speaker did you find Mandarin or Japanese harder to learn? Or is it hard to answer since you knew a lot of the Chinese characters in Japanese from your knowledge of Mandarin? I'd kill to understand Mandarin but I'm currently self-studying Japanese and that's plenty hard already. Maybe one day if I ever get good at JP I'll give Mandarin a shot though. Must have taken forever to learn to pick out the tones in Mandarin.
I love foreign language roadrunning. you're doing great! I wonder what/where to study when I grow up.. moving far away sounds scaaary, but also very exciting ^^ Greetings From Germany, keep going :)
I went on a tour in China back in 2014 and it was a fun experience (I don’t remember too much but it was still an adventure) A lot of the time some locals would talk to me in Mandarin and then realize quickly I wasn’t a local 😅 which was a bit awkward but still fun (public toilets there shocked me at first but it’s okay)
I love ❤️ the Chinese lady stating that the Japanese can’t express themselves lol 😂. The fact that thy are so proud of her distinct home and surrounding area was fantastic as she went on to tell you that’s “why” your Chinese language skills were 👌🏽❤️👏🏽. Hey can you make a video about the medical stuff in Asia. Insurance, afraid of getting sick there.... that would be a huge help because I am going to South Korea for a longer time next year
Well both Chinese and Japanese are one of the harder languages in the world to learn, so it's no wonder their respective citizens would be impressed that a foreigner can speak fluently, it proves to them that you've put a lot of effort into learning it. English on the other hand is universal and one of the easiest language to learn, so even if you're from a non-English speaking country nobody really cares if your fluency is perfect or not in those English speaking countries Still, those are some very good pronunciations, respect

Love your videos, only complaint that I have is I don't speak Japanese or Chinese. So I rely heavily on the sub titles. Yours is in white which is good but the person that you are talking to is in green. Sometimes it blends with the background which makes it hard to read.
Everlasting battle between mom-in-law vs daughter-in-law... scary 😔
The struggle is real lol
But 'MIriam in China' has very good vibes with her Qinghai villager MIL.
My mother and my paternal grandmother have a good relationship (I'm Chinese and both my parents are from the countryside) especially since my mother helps her a lot with health kind of stuff (she tells her what's better to eat and use)
When I think about it, my maternal great-grandmother was scary as heck, but I loved her too ^^
I enjoy your videos so much, you encourage me to travel abroad (when this whole situation allows us). Please keep doing vlogs, they are genuinely good.
Love from uk !
You are my true inspiration !
Thank you so much 😀
i amazed the way you speak chinese & japanese, very fluent. btw i'm from Indonesia i like watching your videos.
Glad you like them!
Great job…be an Ambassador like Anming. It’s lovely ☺️.
Years ago Anming bought a piece of arid land in a foreign country against other people’s opinions and planted wheat. Today she is on a combine harvester happily reaping her labour of love. :D
Thank you so much for your kind words.
The most interesting thing is that you really know their customs and family issues! That chinese man was took by surprise when you talked about Mother-in-laws!
This is a general issue everywhere not only in China.
I thought she spoke really good Chinese and I really like how the people said you speak Chinese really well to her I guess they were surprised
Knowing Chinese helped a lot with Japanese.
A bit of an accent, but as a second language definitely one of the most fluent mandarin speakers out there
I just love your videos, your enthusiasm makes me want to learn another language... I'm subscribed & I ❤all your videos with a 👍
i just started learning Japanese:) i’m 14 and i live in the netherlands so i just speak dutch and english
You started learning way earlier than me!
Oriental Pearl really?? how old were you when you started if i may ask?
Amalia de Oliveira A lady never reveals her age lol
@@OrientalPearl :(
@@amaliadeoliveira3261 try learning Chinese also. More widely spoken.
I find Chinese language prank videos to be much more fun and entertaining than Japanese ones. Their reactions are heartwarming.
Fair enough. It's hard to get reactions out of Japanese people. They contain themselves a lot.
TH-cam collabs is a must love em
I love foreign language roadrunning. you're doing great!
I wonder what/where to study when I grow up.. moving far away sounds scaaary, but also very exciting ^^
Greetings From Germany, keep going :)
Thank you Germany! Life is an adventure!
Your videos are just excellent!
Thank you very much!
I literally love all you're videos and I especially love the Chinese food market and I really would like to speak Chinese
Nice little chat. 😀 Thanks for taking us along.
Happyy to see ya again 🙈
I went on a tour in China back in 2014 and it was a fun experience (I don’t remember too much but it was still an adventure)
A lot of the time some locals would talk to me in Mandarin and then realize quickly I wasn’t a local 😅 which was a bit awkward but still fun (public toilets there shocked me at first but it’s okay)
The toilets are pretty shocking for sure. Lol
I’m praying 🙏🏽 about the flooding, earthquakes and other events that maybe the media has negatively portrayed for whatever reason. God Bless you and Remain cautious of TIGER 🐅 Mommas! Your dedication and cultural awareness is simply beautiful to me.
People in the Northeast are very funny. Actually most people in China are very proud of their hometown.
Dang that's some good Chinese...lol. I really enjoyed the street and building shots and the dragon looked great. I think a collaboration would boost your channel and garner greater exposure, so why not have a "kick at the can". Interesting side note, whilst watching your video up pops and ad for italki, does this mean you have hit the big times? Lol.
As always, stay safe and wash your hands.
Thanks! I always like to add a little bit of scenery into videos.
Hi I was seeing your video and i noticed that you spoke about the Portuguese custard tarts, and if one day you will intend to visit my country you will see that we have the best custard tarts of the world, they are unique :-)
At this point you should start doing mukbangs with all the unique food you find at Chinatown 😂😂 Great video as always Anming!!
HA! Mukbangs!
Hello again - thank you for the video. I get to see a country (countries) that i will never visit. Very interesting to see how you interact with everyone. Take care be safe. Spin
omg i barely find you and i just wanna say you are my inspo and hope for the future
Thank you for watching the video! Keep studying hard.
Haha i just seen your long chat video mentioning that this will be your last video of chatting with strangers. So now i am watching this and i will say you really did went out with a big bang.😄😄I think you picked the right timing 2 switch new directions.😆😆Jan-Jun is one heck of the long period making same theme while still sustaining high umph all the way. I am glad i was not the type that got bored after a month. Now i give you green light 2 explore new themes. Hahahaha.😁😁
This will not be the last of these videos. I just said it can't sustain the channel by itself. I will do some of these, but more of other stuff.
Your chinese is perfect :) very impressed!
🚨Wait this is #5... Yah that means I get to watch 4,3,2,&1 ... Cereal and language it's going to be a good morning!🚨
Wonderful! You can catch up.
Hey can you make a video about the medical stuff in Asia. Insurance, afraid of getting sick there.... that would be a huge help because I am going to South Korea for a longer time next year
I would suggest you check out my friend's channel for that. She talks about the Japanese helathcare system a lot. Kaliechips
Well both Chinese and Japanese are one of the harder languages in the world to learn, so it's no wonder their respective citizens would be impressed that a foreigner can speak fluently, it proves to them that you've put a lot of effort into learning it. English on the other hand is universal and one of the easiest language to learn, so even if you're from a non-English speaking country nobody really cares if your fluency is perfect or not in those English speaking countries
Still, those are some very good pronunciations, respect
Keep doing what you are doing the videos turn out great imo. Ahhh I admire you!!!
Thank you so much!!
Love your videos. I enjoy listening to you speak different languages. Very inspiring. Keep safe. Love from UK
Thank you so much UK!
7:48 that manhole cover activated my OCD instantly 🤣
You guys notice things I don't even catch. lol
SAME
I am twelve and learning Japanese I just started kanji and your videos help inspire me to keep on learning I hope to move to Japan as an adult. ありがとございます!
I'm so happy to hear that! You are staring Japanese waaaaaay earlier in life than I did.
Thay looks (sort of) a portuguese pastel de nata. Portuguese were all over there and left much of their cultural gastronomy. You ate very well read well traveled. Amazing 💚
No not a Portuguese thing the egg tarts. Inspired but we don’t usually have condensed milk in egg tarts. Consistently of tart crust is different too
Always bring me a smile watching your Video. Thank you!
You are so kind
Love your videos, only complaint that I have is I don't speak Japanese or Chinese. So I rely heavily on the sub titles. Yours is in white which is good but the person that you are talking to is in green. Sometimes it blends with the background which makes it hard to read. Can you use a bright or fluorescent green or maybe yellow so it can be easier to follow what they are saying to you. Just a thought... keep up the great vids...
That's fair enough. I'm working on getting new software to make real subtitles with.
I love your videos its so wholesome n beautiful to see people of different backgrounds speaking the same language having a genuine good time melts my heart whats best way to learn both Japanese and manderin?
I made a video about that called “20 secrets of successful language learners”. Please check it out.
@@OrientalPearl thank you so much it means alot I want to learn either one maybe more Japanese and seeing you speak it like a pro is inspiring I just don't know where to start haha
i am learning to draw Chinese characters, thanks to you! Happiness, Blue, I, and more!
That's great! You can learn to write them little by little.
It’s interesting when you described it “to draw” instead of “to write” 😂
@@isydneylife5830 is because I do not have a brush, so I am using a pen!
I listen to people in Chinatown and can understand what they are saying but I don't have the natural easy rapport that you have. I am enjoying your videos and trying to develop more confidence but I am always on the outside. I do enjoy giving directions when someone needs help in their language.
It just takes time and a lot of conversations.
Hello Anming. Hope you're doing well. First of all. That Chinatown is really cool. Love those dragons. Anyway. What gives?? Those Chinese folks really want you to get a Chinese boyfriend. I don't know how Toby would feel about that LOL. Finally, those egg tarts look really delicious. And now, I want egg tarts. Dang it! Take it easy :-)
Toby wouldn't think it's funny. So it's a good thing Toby doesn't watch TH-cam, he only sees instagram. lol
@@OrientalPearl Yeah that's right. TH-cam is banned in China :-(
Don't be shy is hugely important, the practice is more important to me than the risk of a potentially awkward encounter.
I was in China in 2011 and 2012 studying at 北大. I might have walked right past you!! Where did you study? I’m back in the US now. I’ve started studying Japanese maybe like two years ago, so you’re a real inspiration to me!
That's cool that you got to do an exchange at Peaking University.
i like trying to speak different languages.where can i buy the books you used to teach you different languages?
Yes, I used to teach English
Is it just me, or does anyone else think the guy on the bike was hitting on Anming?
Ha ha, they were joking around.
I love the way you are , the way you speak Chinese is incredible, wow I give you a ten
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the upload
Haribin accent is not the most standard, the accent of mandrin is mainly from Luanping county, Chengde city in Hebei Province.
Ha ha, people from Harbin always say that.
Really enjoy watching your videos,,👍
Glad to hear it
I don't know if this has been asked before but how long has it taken you to learn both chinese and japanese? Binge watching your videos lately^&
3 years to pass HSK6 3 years for JLPT N1
