I think Romance languages compared to Asian languages are hard because they’re so different. Lots of Asian languages have tones and some sounds were not used to making and vice versa. There’s a lot of sounds in English they can’t make at first. It just takes a lot of practice and patience

Skrooge Lantay To clarify, i'd suggest thai people to call foreigners คนต่างชาติ (foreigners) then to call them ฝรั่ง (farang). It really depends on the subject and the conversation you're having. As for me I get called farang because im half thai half American and my friends just say that to bully me or to get on my nerves. Most of the time, thai people look at foreigners as money grabbers unless you can speak or understand thai you're basically gonna get charged more. That's the truth and it's sad. Alot of things that other people don't know that's been going on in thailand and what thai people do, for me I know almost everything because I've lived in thailand for like my whole life. I'm getting into too much detail so that's all.

I've had bad experiences with Australians in Thailand before (where they insulted locals freely because they didn't think anyone understood them. One even called me a fag right to my face thinking I didn't know what he's talking about.) but this man is different. He didn't have to learn Thai because it's such a niche language that wouldn't be useful anywhere but Thailand but he did anyway. It shows he genuinely wanted to connect with the people around him during that 6 months. It's refreshing to see native English speakers do something like this when they don't have to. • @tabidots

If you learn a second language as an adult, you will almost invariably have an accent. Your pronunciation, prosody, and rhythm can all be excellent-as his is-and allow for unambiguous communication, but a native speaker will still be able to pick out subtleties. By that, I mean things like differences in how you shape your mouth to articulate vowels and consonants, which are so subtle that they wouldn't even be possible to transcribe via IPA. That doesn't mean his study of the language is sorely incomplete or that he isn't fluent. Sure, for 2nd language learners of English, there are accent reduction courses, but this is only because English is the most widely studied language in the world... and such courses are not even really necessary as most native speakers are fairly capable of understanding a wide range of non-native accents.

It's the first time since I arrived here that I have seen a non Asian person speaking Thai well enough to be conversant, with subtitles. Subtitles generally don't hang out on the street, obviously. Also there's the replies from Thai people, which is so valuable as it trains the ear. I have to say; I had more pennies drop and connections fire, watching this, after struggling to 'tune in' to the Thai language as I mentioned before. It made me realize, I need something similar, done the opposite way around for the kids I teach. After several views my Thai is more efficiently improved than I could have hoped for!! Whoa, this is awesome man. Due to the pandemic, I'm doing exactly the same you did. Im teaching in a very small province where almost nobody speaks english. Seems to be the fastest way to speak a bit of Thai!
    Thanks for sharing man!

I once got interested in Thai language and culture thanks to some Thai drama that I have watched and fallen in love with. However, the language looked quite complex and hard but I will try to learn it when I have free time in the future. I have watched Trabab See Chompoo and I have some other Thai dramas to watch on my list, as well. I hope I can go to Thailand one day and live there for some time long enough to get to know their culture and people more. 😊

Fantastic! I am impressed and you should be very proud of yourself and your ability to speak Thai so fluently even after leaving Chiang Mai 6 years ago. Well done and keep it up! Your cheerfulness makes any viewer happy and motivated. I learned Japanese in 1975 for 5 weeks and still cannot speak it as fluently like you. Best wishes from Chan, Malaysia.( In 1986, I spoke Japanese while shopping at Sydney's Paddy Market and the vendor ( a Japanese) was shocked. Guess that was quite like your situation as per this video. Ha ha sabai sabai...

I lived in Thailand for 5 years, my Thai is about as good as his is in 9 months (and I get a lot of compliments on my Thai even at 1/7 of his learning speed haha).
Language is hard but made easier to learn by the fact that Thai people are so easy to talk to and helpful if you really want to learn. It's also hilarious fun to joke around in Thai, I think the langauge just lends itself to a kind of silly, friendly style of humour which I love.

Their faces light up when he starts speaking Thai!! It’s beautiful!
It’s like when I learn new phrases in Swedish and I say them to my boyfriend (who’s Swedish) and he’s like 😱😱😱😱
I remember yesterday just saying randomly to him “Jag talar lite Svenska eftersom jag är inte från Sverige, men jag är från England därför, jag talar Engelska” and he stared at me and said “woooooooow”
I didn’t start learning Swedish until up about late July, early August this year so yeah. The first time I met his mum she said “hur mår du?” To which I replied with, “I’m good thank you” and she turned to my boyfriend and said in Swedish “WOW SHE UNDERSTOOD??!!” 😂😂

Language is the gateway to the world. The more I see videos like this the more I respect those who take the plunge.
Actually others will probably think he's showing off. But I don't think that's the case here. It shows respect and if you get good enough at it.
It will definitely open some doors that otherwise would be slammed shut. Totally respect this guy and it helps encourage others to continue studying.
No to mention there have been studies found those who engage in foreign languages. Have a tendency to ward off diseases like Alzheimer's.
Keeping the mind active is definitely not a bad thing here & furthermore it has its perks. Definitely wouldn't mind being in this guy's position for a day, just saying. :)

I just stumbled upon your channel, because I was coasting through language learning stuff. I'm half Thai half American and also fluent in Thai. Currently learning Arabic which is very deflating. You are a Rockstar for showing people this. It's spot on for cross cultural understanding. Hats off mate. ฉันมีเพื่อนหลายคนจากออสเตรเลียและพวกเขาจะประทับใจมาก. ให้พวกเขาเห็น
