This morning I was told that language TH-camr Laoshu has passed away. I’ve never had the chance to meet or talk to him, but this news is quite shocking and sad. Just last week the moderator for my channel passed away suddenly and unexpected too. This is a reminder of the fragility of life. My heart goes out to their families and those they left behind.

Thank you for taking time to give us a glimpse of your life overseas, and that you flawlessly merge English, Chinese, and Japanese together. I took one year of Chinese at University my senior year, and I’m amazed at how much of your conversations I can understand. I’ve never formally studied Japanese, but I grew up around it because my older sister studied it, yet I’m surprised how much I understand. (Chinese is easier to learn for me lol) It’s fun to see how much people light up when you speak to them in their native languages, and when you are genuinely having fun appreciating their culture!^^ May you continue to stay safe and healthy this year. ^^
I lived in Japan for 4 years. I was stationed at Camp Zama. I loved Japan!!! Everyone there is so polite and nice to each other. No judgement in Japan.

Gwailou or gweilo actually is a Cantonese terminology to refer to westerners. Its typically a derogatory term, however in this day and age I think its impact has subsided drastically. Source - I'm of Cantonese descent

Is this term derogatory? In Canada it is rarely used except in a technical or legal sense. To just call people foreigners would be considered rude at the very least. It hints that someone does not belong. I suppose there is much cultural nuance to consider in the translation.
Speaking an other language is one of the coolest things you can learn in your life. When learn a language from a very different culture, its so exciting to dive in when you mastered it.

As you age you think of how short life really is. One second your are 20 / 30 - working, raising a family then suddenly your are 65. Showing my age - when young you looked at birth announcements. Friends are having a family. Late in life you look to see what friends or people you know that have passed on. It is the cycle of life. That is why I want to get my Japanese up to working level, so that I can converse easily in Nihongo as I'm able to in English. That was one of best things about finding your channel about a year ago. It inspired me to work harder and longer everyday on my studies, even the days when my brain, eyes, and mouth, decide they no longer wish to collaborate on the language learning goal. You've also helped me to accept that I'm not going to be, and don't have to be perfect in my Japanese usage. I'm not in my first language so unrealistic expectations no longer factor in my thinking. Greg's unexpected passing is a blow because he was such a positive, enthusiastic presence on your live streams. He presence will be missed and I had very limited interactions with him. Because I am only on the easy side of this relationship, as a consumer/viewer of your content, I selfishly hope that the livestream you were planning will still occur. Thanks for the weekly tours. I look forward to Japan reopening boarders so I can resume planning a four month approximately, language learning trip. Immersion improves my abilities, and I really enjoy being in Japan.

Japan is such a bright country. Not sure if it's because of how clean everything is, or if it's the sky there. All videos I see of sunny japan look so amazing.
I notice a lot of Japanese and Chinese speakers will say to a westerner "Oh, you must be very smart to speak three languages." Yet in Europe, people look at Americans strange if they only speak two languages. I met many people in Europe who speak seven languages fluently. In France it was common to meet people who spoke at least four languages.
Stop the cap, nobody speaks more than 2 languages in europe fluently. Im Chinese and I speak Mandarin Cantonese and English fcking fluent. There's levels white boi
@@Fx_Sharingan96 You need to visit more often. French schools require at least foreign languages. The key word was many, not all. people. I would regularly see people flip with seven languages between customers. One friend of mine knew 12. Once again it's not all people but many are polyglots. Then there are natives Danes, Estonians, Italians that will know 3-4 other languages. If you speak Mandarin fluently you are lucky. My mother speaks it but had to live in China for four years until completely fluent. I'm learning Arabic now and that's hard too.
Its because a lot of them are learnt in europe in different countries. And btw I don't think thats true. Most people in Europe are Bilingual or Monolingual

He's referring to a slang used in China that is a derogatory term for White people. Gweilo. You'll chime in here saying it's not an offensive word because the people sponsoring your channel wouldn't want that...but you know what the word is and what it means.
People who speaks Mandarin may not necessary know Cantonese. Unlike some languages that are kind of similar where people can sort of understand (e.g. Spanish & Portuguese, Swedish & Norwegian & Danish, Russian & Ukrainian, etc.), In fact, even among the Chinese people themselves, some dialects are so different in their pronunciations that they are almost like foreign languages to each other. Mandarin has 4 tones while Cantonese has 9 tones, but which only 6 are more commonly used. So if a Mandarin speaker is unfamiliar with the 6-9 tones of Cantonese, it is really hard for them to pick that up. Just take the word "Yellow", which can be a person's last name. Below are how the different dialects would sound, even though the written form (黄) is the same for all. Mr. Huang (Mandarin), Mr. Wong (Cantonese), Mr. Ng (Hokkien/Minnan/Taiwanese), Mr. Vong (Hakka), Mr. Oui (Hainanese; pronounced very quickly like a monosyllable: oh-wee), & Mr. Wang (Shanghainese).
Gweilo is is word in Cantonese that cantonese people refer to as 'foreigners'. It's not meant to be offensive but I guess there are soft and delicate people who choose to be offended.

@@Fx_Sharingan96 You need to visit more often. French schools require at least foreign languages. The key word was many, not all. people. I would regularly see people flip with seven languages between customers. One friend of mine knew 12. Once again it's not all people but many are polyglots. Then there are natives Danes, Estonians, Italians that will know 3-4 other languages. If you speak Mandarin fluently you are lucky. My mother speaks it but had to live in China for four years until completely fluent. I'm learning Arabic now and that's hard too.
Its because a lot of them are learnt in europe in different countries. And btw I don't think thats true. Most people in Europe are Bilingual or Monolingual

He's referring to a slang used in China that is a derogatory term for White people. Gweilo. You'll chime in here saying it's not an offensive word because the people sponsoring your channel wouldn't want that...but you know what the word is and what it means.
People who speaks Mandarin may not necessary know Cantonese. Unlike some languages that are kind of similar where people can sort of understand (e.g. Spanish & Portuguese, Swedish & Norwegian & Danish, Russian & Ukrainian, etc.),
In fact, even among the Chinese people themselves, some dialects are so different in their pronunciations that they are almost like foreign languages to each other. Mandarin has 4 tones while Cantonese has 9 tones, but which only 6 are more commonly used. So if a Mandarin speaker is unfamiliar with the 6-9 tones of Cantonese, it is really hard for them to pick that up.
Just take the word "Yellow", which can be a person's last name. Below are how the different dialects would sound, even though the written form (黄) is the same for all.
Mr. Huang (Mandarin), Mr. Wong (Cantonese), Mr. Ng (Hokkien/Minnan/Taiwanese), Mr. Vong (Hakka), Mr. Oui (Hainanese; pronounced very quickly like a monosyllable: oh-wee), & Mr. Wang (Shanghainese).
